The Galactic Roundtable
The Galactic Roundtable is an international diplomatic space station owned by The Co-Prosperity Sphere of Auman and leased to the Roundtable Association, which is a democratically elected board responsible for the running of day to day operations in a fair, honest and transparent fashion. There are currently two official elected offices responsible for Administration of the station's day to day operations and then there is Roundtable Station Security.
The purpose of the Roundtable is to serve as the permanent home of the renewed Galactic Assembly, a consensual diplomatic body with no legislative power over any attendant nation. The objective of the Galactic Assembly is to provide an open forum for the galaxy's use in resolving political disputes before they can lead to armed conflict.
The Roundtable is also a setting designed for open use by every nation in the galaxy, to bring together species and peoples and engage in lighthearted antics, heated debates and intriguing plotlines.
Elections have already been held, seeing the People's Republic of Alversia assume the title of station administrator and the Colonial Republic of New Dornalia taking on the solemn role as chief steward of safety and security onboard the Roundtable.
Administration handles all mundane issues of station operations from maintenance, ward zoning, civil engineering and all such things of that nature, as well as taking on the responsibility as Steward of the Galactic Assembly, overseeing meetings and encouraging good behavior amongst diplomatic peers.
Station Security enforces a set of laws and bylaws and sees to internal law enforcement operations. Their duties include the persecution and suppression of the station's criminal element, security for honored dignitaries and defending the interior of thr Roundtable in the event of an attack by a hostile power.
What is it, though... Really?
“Roundtable Station is the headquarters of the new Galactic Assembly, a place for the many peoples of the galaxy to meet to share ideas, make deals and debate the finer points of galactic law. Located within neutral space and protected by a joint fleet of GA members, the station has been allocated as neutral space beyond the jurisdiction of any single nation in the spirit of fellowship amongst nations of differing perspectives and histories. It is not just a physical location but an embodiment of hope that peace can be fostered in a dangerous and violent galaxy through dialogue and mutual ground. It remains to be seen if these lofty goals can be attained.”
~From ‘The Galactic Assembly: Roundtable Station’, by Professor Lana Hopkins.
Though it started life as a military station in the Aumanii Fleet, with capacity for 30 million troops and support staff, Roundtable has undergone a considerable overhaul so that it may better function as the diplomatic and cultural exchange centre that it will now function as. At its core is the Forum, intended to act as the beating heart of the Galactic Assembly while the rest of the station is broken into Wards intended for use by the various races of the GA.
The Roundtable is an O'Neill Cylinder with a diameter of 8km and an overall length of 32km. The total population that can be sustained onboard comfortably at 26 million individual sapients, though this figure depends entirely on their own physiological needs.
Forum
“Just as Roundtable will act as the centre of the new Galactic Assembly, so the Forum must act as the centre of Roundtable.”
~From ‘The Galactic Assembly: Roundtable Station’, by Professor Lana Hopkins.
At the core of this station is the Forum. Once the headquarters of the military installation, most of the internal bulkheads have been removed and the remainder strengthened to keep the station’s structural integrity. An additional second and third skin was added internally to reduce the risk of depressurisation as a result of a breach or an attack upon the station. As a result, the central district, now known as ‘the Forum’, is generally open and spacious, connected by broad doors where bulkheads could not be sacrificed. These are connected by walkways and spaced by green gardens and blue pools to provide a natural feel and organic, relaxing sound to the area. After the overhaul, the buildings were painted white with blue effects to provide a neutral, clean look though this can be changed.
The Forum is the cultural heart of this international station, where people's from all nations and species can come together in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation, to take in the sights or do business. This area is also home to a great number of entertainment venues and hotels which draw a great number of tourists every year. It does, however, have its dark side... As hustlers and criminals from all over the galaxy assemble to make a quick buck off the backs of the innocent.
Embassy Row
Roundtable station is the diplomatic centre of the Galactic Assembly but without diplomats and ambassadors, it is but another station. Based on the Forum, Embassy Row is the district in which the missions of the galaxy are based for day-to-day activity. It is rather misleadingly titled as rather than being a single row or street, it is an entire sub-district of the Forum. Located conveniently close to the Roundtable itself where galactic matters can be debated, it boasts excellent public transport facilities and connection to the private space docks which are the primary entries for diplomats arriving to and leaving the station. They also possess powerful communications arrays to allow communications with native encryptions to practically anywhere in the galaxy, ensuring Roundtable will always remain in the loop.
Wards
“If you’re rich, you’ll live in the Forum. If you want to get rich, you’ll live in the Wards.”
~Roundtable saying.
Wards are essentially unincorporated cities that make up the various cultural and societal components of the Roundatable and have populations of anywhere from a few thousand to several million, with the largest typically being mixed zones under the direct control of the Roundtable Administration.
Though the Forum is where the bulk of negotiations and diplomacy occur, the wards will be where the majority of the inhabitants will reside. If the Forum is the heart of the station then the wards is the soul. These are separated from one another by heavy duty bulkheads and airlocks to keep them for the sake of safety, so that if one ward loses the ability to sustain life it will not affect the others. Further, through this system, each ward can be tailored to suit the specific physiological needs of the leasee, for example, to accommodate ammonia based lifeforms. Though specific changes are subject to approval by station security and the Roundtable zoning and bylaws committee.
Each successful applicant accepted into the Roundtable is entitled to one ward with which to use for their own benefit, to engage in business activity or to showcase their distinct national characteristics in a peaceful way. In your ward, almost anything goes so long as it is approved by station security and the activity does not pose a feasible threat to the station.
How do I join?
Fill out a brief application... Now, we'll be pretty open about admitting applicants, but there's a few simple rules that should be common sense, but I'll go ahead and write them down regardless.
Rules:
•Don't metagame, godmod, engage in any OOC bad behavior or shenanigans.
•You do not have the right to destroy the Roundtable, it's a joint setting so be respectful of the common property this thing represents. Should you wish to attack the Roundtable, present your ideas here for consideration... And when I say consideration, I mean everyone involved gets a say. Best bet for happiness, however, is to just leave the Roundtable be. This does not, however, preclude criminal thuggery or small scale violence... Just don't haul up and alter the place too much.
That's about it. The Roundtable setting is free and open, to an extent. As thread owner, I reserve the right to remove anyone, any time for any reason.
