The Royal Palace, Truvaria, The Frozen Forest

The Royal Palace was aflutter with the activity of dozens of maidservants, guards, chefs and servants. A massive renovation of the East-Wing of the Palace meant that painters, interior decorators, electricians and all other manner of men bustling about, trying to finish their jobs as quickly as possible so they could go home to their families early. One room was unbothered however- a single large meeting room that may have at one point been a war room, but was not decorated so as to imply that it would be a place for social gatherings. Thus it was on this day that it was freshly cleaned and prepared for the arrival of esteemed guests of the Monarchy.

More than five foreign women would be visiting with the intention of courting Crown Prince Ivan. Their rooms were prepared, their guards and maidservants on standby and numerous events already being planned. All that had yet to occur was the actual arrival of the girls from their foreign nations. None of them spoke Frozen Forestrian, so translators were also being called in en-masse.

The Crown Prince stood in his dressing room, a young servant nearby. Ivan slipped out of a leather jacket that he had been given as a gift and instead replaced it with a more modern one. It was green and blue, the national colors of the nation. Zipping it up and looking in the mirror, he wondered how it had come to this point. The invitation of foreign girls that he knew nothing about, and they were expected to court him when they had never met? It wasn't something he was particularly fond of, but at the insistence of his father, he had no choice. He debated strapping a sword to his hip and eventually settled to do so-a ceremonial sword to impress his new guests.

As the foreign suitors arrived at the gates of the palace,, they were rushed through above any other form of traffic-the King included. Led through the front gates by guardsmen, they would find themselves in The Royal Palace before finally being brought to the meeting room. Attended on by waiters and maidservants, they would be expected to wait for further instructions-using the time to get to know one another before courting began.

There was little that Princess Ylara enjoyed more than visiting a new country for the first time. People were fascinating in their diversity, and wherever she went she never failed to find something new, some new practice or belief or way of dress or eating that she never would have thought existed had she never left for foreign shores, where the Mortal Goddess was a strange rumor from a foreign land, if indeed they had ever heard of Her at all. Thus, she was almost disappointed by the efficiency and speed with which she was ferried from the airport to the Royal Palace upon landing in Truvaria. She sorely missed the opportunity to walk the streets and meet these people who might one day become hers, or even to do more than just look out the car window at the buildings and crowds they passed (though she had seen a robin just as it took wing, which always boded well for a new adventure). She wasn't sure she could have placed the Frozen Forest on a map before receiving that odd letter, and a view from the sky was hardly enough to tell one about a place. Though the process certainly spoke of a well-organized people with the proper respect for royalty, even royalty that did something so strange as to put a single person, a man at that, on the throne.

She wondered, as their guides led her and the hulking, bearded man in a suit close on her heels through the Palace, what the proper duties of Royalty was in these lands. Was this King of theirs a figurehead, a relic from the past as so many Kings and even Queens were in the world? Was he expected to at once defend and lead the nation, while also seeing to the spiritual needs of his people? What a tremendous weight that must be for one set of shoulders. Her thoughts soon wandered from this, however, and she instead observed the work going on around her. It seemed that a really quite impressive renovation was in the finishing stages, and the bustle in the air was palpable, workers of every profession imaginable at practically every corner. From simple observation they seemed like people she might have seen anywhere. Modern (foreign, as her mothers might call it) clothing appeared to be the norm, and she hoped she would not appear too out of place. Her own attire consisted of a ruffled blouse and divided skirts, all in fine silks and various shades of blue. In what might seem an odd touch to one who had never met a Princess of the Martial Blood the blouse was mostly obscured by a burnished breastplate, and solid, thick-soled boots thumped against the floor beneath the hems of the skirts. The armor was mostly ceremonial: the metal was too thin to stop so much as a moderately determined screwdriver, and it was richly decorated by silver-work spidering around the torso, the symbol of the Devoured Sun proudly at the center in gold and onyx. Only a thick interior lining of kevlar made it "mostly" ceremonial. She murmured a quick prayer to Imarie, who had sacrificed her love to spread the stars across the night so that all humans the world over might have light in the darkness. It was said her blessing was essential for first meetings.

Just as she finished her dedication, after enough time to impress her with the size of this wing of the Palace, their guide opened the door to the meeting room and ushered them in with a bow. She swept in on light feet despite her heavy boots, eager to begin this new, strange experience the Gods (or the Noreti post, rather) had dropped into her lap. Sir Aelfric was scowling by her side the entire time, of course, but she spared only a soft smile for the older man and a gentle pat on the arm. He had been against this from the beginning, but he had refused to even contemplate her going without escort, and insisted loudly on being that escort. The Prince of the Sword had always been her favorite among mother's consorts.

"Don't look so grim, dear Aelfric." She said, speaking in Noreti as it seemed they were the first of the guests to arrive so there was no worry of being rude. "You're going to make them think we're such a dour people." In response Aelfric at first simply grunted, and if anything doubled his scowl. Then he promptly stuck his tongue out at her, and her ensuing laugh softened his expression considerably. She flicked his nose playfully, and wandered about the room, pacing and exploring to pass the time until the rest of the guests arrived.

Princess Amana bint-Samir.
Meeting Room, The Royal Palace, Truvaria, The Frozen Forest.

Lioness above and below, how the bloody fuck did I get here? What drove Father, Mother and me to accept this invitation? Was it the free food? The vacation?
The Gods alone knew... as the daughter of a Khan, roughly equivalent to a Duke in Western Countries, I was not exactly an impressive sight: I would turn thirty twenty-nine and a half this year, was of average size, which was heightened by my shoes (slight heels, a few centimeters, not much or uncomfortable), long, white hair bound back to a ponytail with a few strands framing my face... red eyes, which looked at the world. I was known as the Tomboy-Princess, maybe more so then Princess Aurelia (that little carpet-muncher, who the magazines loved to report about), mainly because of my most favourite hobby, which was football.
Soccer, for others.
I am a huge fan of the FC Motya, play myself, even on my university's team - although I was currently pausing my studies of Philology and German Philology, I had a Bachelor's Degree. When in 2018 the ancient land of my family, the Khanate of Jazirat Alshahwa, came under Kyrenaian Rule again, my family returned to the throne and so did I. Together with Father, I had immediately begun to set up our position and rule.
I was, I would love to claim, one of his best advisors.
And here I sat, now... about to court a foreign Prince for love, honour and making little Kings. Not unheard of, such a thing, but I would have never imagined myself in such a position.
Anyway. I packed my things, including a football and a little present for Ivan, and went off to fly here, to the Frozen Forest - it was well known in Kyrenaia, mostly due to being the place of a race during NASJAR. Jet racing was not my favourite sport, but it was fun, I had been at the race in Oea.
So, here I was now. Being surrounded by servants was unusual for me, highly so... Lioness above, being in a Palace was unusual for me!
The Frozen Forest was a beautiful country, that was for sure, though. And the palace had a different feeling to it then the Palace of the Azure Hall in Utica, that was for sure.
I asked one of the maids to maybe bring me a cuppa tea, please, sat down in the meeting room and waited together with the other young women... and sometimes not so young women, admittedly.
Well, this was going to be fun.
Holy fuck, was that Princess Rasha over there?!

Princess Rasha bint-Razia.
Meeting Room, The Royal Palace, Truvaria, The Frozen Forest.

Indeed, it was me, Princess Rasha bint-Razia, the only daughter of Kyrenaia's currently reigning Sultana, Lady-Commander of the Armies of the Five Deserts and a trained officer of the armoured corps.
Pleased to make your acquaintance.
I nodded towards Amana, even threw her what might pass as a smile in some places, and went back to my reading. It was a modern collection of poems, written by Karim Risha, which were about love and peace and in one case an ode to apple pie. The palace was pretty and pretty efficient, just as I liked it, although there were renovations being done - then again, when was there not a renovation going on at the Azure Hall?
Anyway, I was an olive-skinned woman, 39 years of age (yes, that old, think what you want, I could pass as your older sister), with short, violet hair like my Mother, and golden eyes, my Father's eyes, as Mother always said. I was not exactly busty, but I wasn't flat as a board either.
I was well-trained, though, a bit toned, as one could expect from an officer in one of the most professional armies in the world.
That was a bit of a point of pride for me, that I managed to become a Major General by my own achievement, in the armoured force, the Lady-Commander Position being exactly that: A position, not a rank. Still, I was single.
There were enough offers, believe me, but also enough intellectual hedgehoppers...
I was going into this with an open mind and an open heart. Who knew, maybe Ivan was a nice lad and we went along well? I would not marry for the sake of marrying, though. That was left to others. And maybe he was into older women as well?
If it didn't work, I would lean back and enjoy the show and the vacation.
Finishing one of the poems, I closed the book and looked into the meeting room. Amana asked for a cuppa, I leaned back and looked at the others.
There was this girl, mid-twenties, I would guess, dressed in good silk and a breastplate. She was decidedly not a Selkie, the style of the armour did not match their Cathéide, the characteristic Half-Cuirass of the Marcach, and looked quite ceremonial. The man at her side was a bodyguard.
I nodded to them respectfully and rose from my seat, tucking the book under my arm.
Well, if anyone wanted to speak, here I was.

The jet lag from the long airplane journey from Toraia to the Frozen Forest left Lady Kiaris with a nasty headache and persistent fatigue as she was hustled from the airport to the royal palace. She watched the world of the Frozen Forest speed past, barely getting enough time to take it in. That was a shame. Hopefully, she would get a chance to get a better look at this country in the days to come. For today, she needed to shake off the effects of the jet lag, be assertive, and make a good first impression on the Frozen Forest’s prince.
Upon arriving at the gates of the palace, Frozen Forestian guards arrived in an instant to escort Kiaris and the servant accompanying her. They were given priority in the traffic flowing through the noble stone building, something that stirred up excitement in her heart. She felt a strong connection to her ancestors, who had no doubt strode through the hallowed halls of a castle in much the same way as she now did. It had been decades since the blue blood of Toraia had been in power and had palaces to inhabit, but perhaps this could be the dawn of a new era. She breathed in the heavy air of the Frozen Forest palace, smelling dust and old wood. The headache left her in the cold, clean air of the Frozen Forest, and it breathed new energy into her as well. Though she was far from home, she felt a good connection to this place.
In the meeting-room, Kiaris stood with the stature due a princess, her hands folded demurely in front of her. The bottom hem of her skirt barely brushed the floor, and a loose bandana hung from her neck. If she was lucky, the Crown Prince would not notice that the tassels on her skirt and shirt were brass, not real gold, or that the “silver” rings in her hair were actually made from aluminum. She tried to hide her intimidation from the other women vying for Ivan’s love. They were rich, privileged, and beautiful. She came from a long-disgraced royal family that hadn’t tasted power in over two hundred years, she didn’t speak English nearly as well as she wished, and she began to suspect that something or other of herself would set his prejudice against her.
At her side stood her family’s only servant, Hikatka Harvor. He was named after an ancient god of Toraian mythology, but there was hardly anything impressive about him. He was barely taller or bigger than his charge, and his babyish face made him look like a twentysomething. He wore modern clothes as opposed to the traditional costume Kiaris wore, and he carried her one suitcase of luggage. He had a tired look in his eyes, as though he’d seen far too much of this angry world.
Hikatka had been the family servant for as long as she could remember. She grew up with him watching over her; he was protective of her even in her adulthood. Apparently he thought she was nervous. She had her apprehensions, yes, but she didn’t want to show them. They can sense your fear. Nevertheless, he placed a hand on her back in an attempt to comfort her.
“Tamanta zado uta, Hiktaka; va gansa hili. De venina har kagel,” she muttered to him in their own language. “Va yagena jir haam apo.”
Kiaris felt his hand move away, back to its place at his side. The last thing she needed was to look unprofessional for her first impression. She had to prove to the Frozen Forestian prince that she was made of the same stuff as her opponents, and that she was just as worthy of his attention.

Kiaris: Take your hand away, Hikatka; I’m not scared. We have come this far. We cannot go home now.

Arriving in Frozen Forest

Desdemona and her best friend, Amelia Hanneghan, had mixed feelings about the country they had arrived in.

“It looks gloomy,” muttered Desdemona as she was escorted to the car that would take her to the palace.

“It might just be the weather?” wondered Amelia.

Both girls were remarkably attractive. Desdemona was an eighteen year old beauty with long brunette hair that flowed to the small of her back. Her five feet ten inch body was slender and curvy and well proportioned. Hazel eyes sparkled at everyone who met her and her face was beautiful with a perky nose, luscious full lips and an angular chin.

Amelia was every bit as gorgeous as her best friend. She was an inch taller than Desdemona with long black hair and green eyes but, other than that, she could have been mistaken for Desdemona’s twin. Their shapes were identical as were the basic contours of their faces. They were both unusually tall for Baran girls.

Each was perhsps a bit overdressed; each wore a fur coat, Desdemona’s being silver fox, Aemelia’s pine marten, and a matching fur hat, because, being from a tropical country, they found it very chilly.

It had been quite a long flight for the young Countess, von Eylstadt. Unlike her younger sister, she didn't have the crippling fear of heights and flying but traded off with a fear of storms, so who knows. But her oldest brother had a fear of deep water, youngest two siblings both had unique phobias of their own. But that doesn't matter right now, now she was here to compete for a love of her life! She didn't know what compelled her to suddenly hop on a plane to see if she could woo the Crown Prince of the Frozen Forest when many other young ladies would be too, probably young ladies with more to offer. Even with her connection to the Empress, the Empress being her younger sister, Magdalene or Maggie as she often went by, didn't feel like she had much to really offer beyond her probably unconditional love.

She had to admit the Prince was appealing, maybe she wouldn't like him and she'd just go home but maybe she did and she'd loose out to any of the other suitors compete for his heart. Well as her mother says "nothing ventured nothing gained." Her family found it odd but she promised this was the last of it, her flights of fancy, jetting off to foreign lands to meet a would be suitor, this would be her last go at it and the outcome would be that. "God," She quietly prayed to herself, "Let this be the one. But let the others who seek his heart be of good spirit too." Fairly religious girl but not the most pious on the planet she just followed her sister's easy going attitude even though she converted to Catholicism the faith of her father.

Dragging her bag behind her she made way from the airport to the car which took her to the Royal Palace. She was told to exit the vehicle, she did grabbing her things. Looking up at the palace through the gate, it was a sight to see for sure. Quite a few of the other ladies arrived, many seemed to be roughly her age, give or take but the most impressive was the far older woman among them, she couldn't totally tell her age but no doubt older than her. Wow, she looks so mature, I'm out of my league here. She also couldn't help but notice her darker skin, She couldn't be a Mazomban could she?...No most of their chiefdom families are already betrothed... She then spotted another with her, so maybe it was the other one seeking the marriage.

She took time to look around at the others too but before long they were ushered inside. Again, more waiting....Someone tell the Prince it's rude to keep a lady waiting...." Is what she thought internally, of course she kept quiet, just wanting to take in what the other ladies were like. It seemed a few brought their servants along, or perhaps confidants , she couldn't say one way or the other. Guess it makes sense she was asked by the family maid to accompany her but yet Maggie opted not too. Her family of such means but you wouldn't guess it, probably her father's military background before he became The Duke, it just felt odd to her. Her younger siblings probably would have for sure, Finé for sure always had her young maidservant in tow aboard her luxury yacht if she was abroad. But looking around, it seemed she was the only one who was alone among them. So what if I'm alone? I'll just have to hold my head high and say I'm Magdalen von Eylstad of the Eylstadt family, and don't you forget it!." Instinctively she followed that up with a whip of her golden hair. Hopefully everything she said was internal, once in a while she did have the habit of thinking out loud.

Princess Rasha bint-Razia.
Meeting Room, The Royal Palace, Truvaria, The Frozen Forest.

As we waited, I watched the others as they arrived and went around, but someone stuck out to me in particular. And, by how long she watched me, I stuck out to her as well - granted, I was the oldest one here.
I smiled back at her.
She watched the others herself, then seemed to think to herself, whipped her golden hair a moment later. She prepped herself, most likely - well, someone was fired up! That was promising!
I decided, that enough time had passed, especially since I recognized that particular one: Magdalene von Eylstadt, Maggie for short, older sister of Ortfiné von Eylstadt, a.k.a. Empress Ortfiné of Kuronami. As Kuronami was a strategic partner of the Sultanate, it was only natural for the Lady-Commander of the Armies of the Five Deserts to recognize her.
I rose from my seat and approached her, smiling, the book still tucked under my arm.
"Hello, there.", I said and smiled friendly, maybe a bit motherly. "How do you do?"
A bit standard, but a good way to start a conversation.

Snapped out of her rather dreamlike state as she continued to think of how to exert her confidence it so happened one of the women she took notice approached her and was talking to her. It seemed friendly enough at least so maybe she didn't get the sense she had starred her down earlier. "Oh! Good day to you ma---" She stopped short of calling her a formal ma'am or miss considering this could be very well one of the ladies seeking the Prince's heart. "Good day to you, Milady! I'm doing well actually. Jet lagged but otherwise quite well today! Magdalene," she introduced herself "but Maggie is all right. And how are you today?"

I let a beat pass.
Maggie was kind-of cute. I knew enough Princes, who would want to have a dance with her and see, where it would lead, but that was not, why I was here.
Asking for what she was doing here was kind-of redundant, too...
"How's Kuronami these days?", I asked, "We don't hear many news around our parts these days, I'm afraid..."

"Rasha, such a nice name, pleasure to meet you. At first I almost thought you could be a countryman of mine, Mazombans similarly are darker in complexion. But based on your name, I'm more guessing the desert lands of Kyrenaia!" Sometimes, Maggie came off as a tad ditzy and sure she could get spacey and dreamy but she honestly was more intelligent than some might assume. "What a fine pleasure this is. Kuronami is doing great, thank you for asking. Very cold winter which has no doubt sent people increasingly on holiday to warmer areas like Mazomba or the festivals in The Freelands." A bit surprising they didn't hear much in the way of news, maybe the RNB needed a further reach. "Besides that though, things have been great. Hope things are going well for you as well."

I almost had to laugh - sure, cold winters... I knew those, two, in all climate zones, but in Utica, winters in these lands had a tendency to still be hot, with a daily mean of 18 degrees Celsius and an average high of 25.
"I indeed am Kyrenaian, a child of its Sultana even... and Lady-Commander of its Armies, as well as a Major General. Maggie raised her eyebrows to the fact this lady was actually the aunt of the Princess Aurelia. As surprising as it might be, Aurelia too made some news in Kuronami's press and not just the gossip sheets either, mostly thanks to her relationship with the Duchess of AHSCA which Maggie found out mostly through proxy of her sister. She didn't want to say much more less she think she could be breaching confidence if there was any.

"Well sounds like your niece has some real spirit in her! Sounds a lot like my younger sister, always just as a eager to take the world by storm and change her little corner of it ever since we were kids. I suppose that's why she is who she is."

I smiled.
I knew, that Aurelia made headlines, mostly in the gossip sheets around the world, the rebellious Kyrenaian Princess - it would not have surprised me, if Maggie had heard of her. As she didn't say something, I assumed, that she was not a reader of the yellow press. That was very good!

Soon enough Yalara found herself among several other ladies, all clearly of royal blood (or perhaps at least noble blood, though she was admittedly a little vague on the difference; Royalty was the only nobility in Noretias). Though, some perhaps royalty recently fallen on hard times and trying very hard not to show it, if the brass and aluminum of a certain outfit were anything to go by. Her heart went out to the poor girl; there were many royal families who had been tossed to the side by their people during the long march of history. It was a difficult thing to foster a love of liberty and democracy, while also maintaining respect for royalty and the Gods. Only by their grace, and the wit of her royal and Sacred ancestors, had Noretias managed it. Altogether, however, these women were enough to convince Ylara that she had made the right choice. Even if nothing ever happened with this Prince Ivan, and she was not able to establish strong ties with the outside world that way, there were representations from fascinating peoples here. Even just meeting and speaking to them would make it worth the airplane ride, and possibly she might open new dialogues that way as well. She had to mind herself, and try her best not to stare; the hair and eyes of some of these women made her own blonde locks and deep blue orbs (courtesy of the blood of Idena the brave, and almost unheard of among other Noreti who were mostly dark of hair and eye) seem perfectly bland by comparison. Was the violet hair and the red eyes natural, she wondered, or a result of dyes and contacts? Fascinating.

She wouldn't find out by just standing there next to Aelfric, however, neither about their eyes nor their customs or peoples. She silently whispered another quick prayer in her mind, and then walked over to the other women. Two of them at least already appeared to know, if not each other, at least each other's nations. Ylara would have the disadvantage, there, coming from such an isolationist nation. She knew far more about the world than did most Noreti, but it went only so far. Ylara cleared her throat politely, and nodded graciously at the others. "I do not wish to interrupt," She said, hoping everyone else (or at least their interpreters) would be able to understand her accented English. "But I thought I should introduce myself to those I will be spending so much time with in the coming days. I am Ylara Etria, of the Martial Blood of Noretias, and it is more than a pleasure to make your acquaintances." This seemed to be directed at those already speaking, but she spoke it loud and clear, as if announcing it to the room. Introductions were always so dull; best to have them over and done with.

"Oh for sure Ortfine and and Aurelia would bounce off each other very well" It only then just struck her that Rasha knew exactly who she was. This woman was a clever one for sure who seemed to know the ins-and-outs. Before continuing though, another lady introduced herself to them. Maggie turned and greeted her in exchange. "Oh hello! A fine pleasure to meet you, Ylara, if I may be so informal. I'm Maggie von Eylstadt, of Kuronami. This here is Rasha bint-Razia of Kyrenaia. How are you doing today, very good I hope? Not as worn from the trip as I am, I also hope!"

Ylara gave Maggie a bright smile, happy to be greeted so warmly. "It is wonderful to know you, Maggie, and you as well Rasha, and surely there is no need for formality between us. We compete for love, and where else should we be more free to be ourselves? I am doing very well today, thank you Maggie. The flight was a long one, but I was so excited to be on this new adventure of ours that I hardly noticed the time. It's been too long since I left Inizia, and I hope these Forestrians allow us the chance to explore their lands."

Kiaris felt someone nudge her shoulder. It was Hikatka. He leaned over and whispered a bit of advice in her ear.
{Try not to seem afraid of the other women,} he suggested. {Try talking to them, you’re known as the social butterfly of your house anyway. You’re the only representation Toraia has in the Frozen Forest, and you ought to make it good representation.}
{All right,} the princess replied. {Any ideas for who I should try talking to first?}
Right away her gaze fell on the arrivals from Kuronami and Kyrenia. The women had grouped up within minutes of arriving at the meeting-hall and struck up a friendly conversation. Kiaris suspected that their nations were allies or at least had some mutually respectful relationship. They seemed a bit intimidating...perhaps meeting them indirectly through another girl would work better.
{How about her?} Hikatka gestured subtly at the woman from Noretias. {She seems friendly enough. I’ve seen her staring at just about everything as we made our way into the palace. Very inquisitive...you like people like that, don’t you? Think of the stories you could tell each other.}
{If I do, I won’t dump the tragic backstory of Toraia’s royalty on her...not right away. That’s a terrible conversation starter.} Out of anyone else, that last statement would have been a bit morbid, but Kiaris sounded completely serious. For her, what had happened to her ancestors was all too real, something her family felt nearly two centuries later. Hardly a matter to joke about. She would save their story for a deep conversation with someone who would appreciate it. Maybe that someone would be Ivan himself...a girl could dream.
Nevertheless, she took Hikatka’s advice and strode lightly to the woman from Noretias. Daintly clearing her throat, she struck up a conversation on what she hoped was a mutual interest…
“Ah, hello! I have always wanted to travel outside home country,” Her accent was thick, but her tone was warm and inviting. “So much to see and learn. You feel the same?”

Ylara's smile widened even further, and she turned to beam at the newcomer. It was the woman she had noticed with the brass and the aluminum, but that was no matter of course. Royalty was a matter of blood and of virtue, not of cash or coin. And it seemed like this woman may also be unfamiliar with many of the other nations represented here, which would make Ylara herself feel less of an outsider.

"Hello, yes I feel the same, the very same!" She said, clearly pleased with the choice of topic. "Many Noreti feel that foreigners have nothing to offer us but cheesy movies and strange cults, but I don't believe the Gods would wish that we remain so small-minded. In travelling to other places I have seen so many things, and spoken to so many people who think in ways that I never would experience in Noretias; I am sure I can only be better for that. Where is it you hail from, my new friend?"

Before I could reply to Maggie, my smile still in place, another young woman joined us, Ylara, as she introduced herself. Maggie introduced herself and myself in one fell swoop, me barely having time to reply, that it was my pleasure as well, before the conversation moved forward.
Ylara was, apparently, quite fine and well, but also very curious.
Before I could ask, however, we were joined by another young woman, Kiaris, who... on closer inspection, the material of her rings and tassels did not seem to be as rich as it seemed from afar. I suspected pyrite for the tassels and old silver for the rings in her hair.
That did not bother me.
I was, by occupation, a soldier. What mattered was, if the girl was a good girl, whatever that was supposed to mean. She seemed nice enough, even through her thick accent and a bit of nervousness I believed to catch on.
I watched as Ylara asked Kiaris about where she came from, waiting for an opportune moment to include myself into the conversation again.

When Desdemona arrived, she and Amelia found themselves greeted by servants and shown to the suite in the castle. It was a handsome place but had a strange heavy and remote feel that Desdemona found a bit depressing. While the servants and waiters were very polite, no one of importance was present. Or were they? Hard to tell, she had to speak through an itnerpreter.

“I think this was a bad idea,” she grumbled to Amelia. “I’m starting to feel like getting it over with. Why can’t I just marry someone I know?”

“Like who?” Amelia asked as she supervised some of the unpacking.

“Like...Uzziah. Or Malachi.” Desdemona said, thinking, her brow furrowing.

Amelia laughed. “You were just saying last week how immature they both are! Well at that rate, how about Reuben Beroth?” she grinned when Desdemona turned up her nose. “He might suit you very well,” she teased, “He could ask you what you had for breakfast every day.”

“He’s a clod,” said Desdemona. “Alright, so I want to marry someone interesting and exciting, is that a crime?” then she paused. “I’m sorry...I don’t mean to sound like I’m twitting about your own…”

Amelia turned to face her, and put her hands on Desdemona’s own. “I’m happy with my marriage, honey. He’s kind to me, he’s generous, and he gives me enough space for myself, and he has an excellent reputation. What more can a woman ask for?”

The two friends embraced, and then one of the maids, Purity, came in and informed Desdemona that some of the other ladies were gathering and enjoying one another’s company.

They looked at one another. “Shall we?” asked Amelia brightly, toying with a lock of her childhood friend’s hair.

“I think so,” Desdemona sighed. She paused to glance in a mirror. Her dark hair was swept back with silver hair combs, and fell wavily down her shoulders to her back. She was wearing an embroidered open jacket of dark green with silver leaf patterns over a dark red dress that fell to her calves, the dress edged with gold geometric patterns. A small gold filigreed cross hung from her neck.

She decided to leave Amelia in charge of settling her in, and to brave meeting the others on her own. When she arrived, several other women were already talking amongst themselves and so she simply smiled, found a place to sit, wondering what in the world was going on, and sat, crossing her legs. “God bless all here,” she said. “I’m so very pleased to meet all of you. I’m Desdemona. I think this is my first trip out of the Region, so far away. Is anyone else cold or is it just me?”

"I am from Toraia," Kiaris responded, simple and straightforward. "I recognize your nation, Noretias, and Kyrenia and Kuronami. But that is all. I do not know where other women here are from. Is not as important, though. I want to know more about this place, Frozen Forest. Maybe in days upcoming, we will get to explore country more. What are common people here like? What are customs of this nation? It is shame we were brought to palace so quickly."

"Indeed.", I said to Kiaris with a smile, "What are the people here like, I wonder... I sorely lack knowledge in that as well. Knowledge, or, as one could put it, intelligence." I shrugged. "Sorry, that's the General speaking. 'Never fight a battle without knowing, where you fight and who you fight', to quote Sultan Ilia the Conqueror."
I sighed.
"Though, I must admit, that I would like to know the Frozen Forest a bit more as well, even without the whole courting-thing, which will surely end in the telenovela-ending...", I grinned jokingly at that.

Fukkin' finally!, I thought with a cheer.
Well, a minute or so ago, this girl, who looked almost like a doll ready to be sent away to its new owner with how thickly she was packed in (and in quite expensive looking furs at that), had entered, sat down and declared, that her name was Desdemona and that she was cold.
Hence my reaction.
"No, Dessy, you're not the only one.", I told her. Granted, Miss Fur-Clad and I could not be dressed more differently, with me sporting a pair of jeans and a shirt hidden underneath a hoody in black, with deep red zipper running along the middle. One of my favourites, to be honest, not the most formal wear, but it did it's job. "Name's Amana, I'm from Kyrenaia. Where're you from?"

Desdemona had requested a cup of hot mint tea with honey of one of the maids through one of the translators. She sat holding it in her hands with her face near it as though to warm herself. She looked curiously at the woman speaking to her. Saints, she is like a giant white rat thought Desdemona. Red eyes and white hair, and dressed like a man. How odd.

“I am from New Edom,” Desdemona explained. “And I’m used to things being a lot warmer. I normally don’t wear very much, you see, I emute our beloved Queen-Empress in that, though for formal occasions I dress like a civilized person. This is awfully funny, I think, it’s like we’re all waiting for the same train or something. Anyway, it’s very nice to meet you.”

"Pleasure's mine!", I said with a smile, though I did ponder her words for a moment: I knew, that New Edom was that place, where nudism was apparently the social norm, at least in some parts, and she did say, that she emulated their Queen-Empress in that - nice and dandy, I was not into girls. Anyway, she then added, that she would dress like a civilized person for formal occasions. Which led to the question, if the Queen-Empress was not civilized or what? Anyway, this was not the moment to tease her for a slip of the tongue. "It has a bit of a railway station feel to it, that's true, but it's more like try-out for the School Football Team. We all want to become the striker they are missing, so we are all gathered here to see, who be up for the task... and right now, we are waiting for the Team Captain and the Trainer to arrive before we all go change into kit and out on the field to show, what we can."
I shrugged.
"Been there, was fun!", I finished with a huge grin. I didn't make the cut, though. Instead, I joined the fencing club.
