Through the door Skurins led Spode to a decent-sized atrium. On the far end sat a cluster of tables and several employees, many of them local Anahuacans hired to perform a variety of service functions in the Embassy, drinking and eating. The area was obviously a canteen of some sort. Skurins summoned an elevator and made small talk about some of the art displayed in the atrium, all of it works by contemporary Excalbian artists that even Skurins had never heard of before being assigned to the Embassy.
After a short ride to the second floor, Skurins led Spode to a nicely appointed office. Although the door clearly said Col. Ilmars Skurins, Defense Attache it had none of the clutter or homey touches that would mark an actually work space. The colonel gestured to a small sofa and matched set of arm chairs. “Please have a seat, Mr. Spode.” He opened a small cabinet. “Would you care for something to drink?”

Uncle Noel wrote:“Just a glass of water if you please,” replied Spode settling into his seat. His was the generation that was more likely to socialise on the squash court than over the alcoholic lunch.
“I should thank you, Colonel Skurins, for seeing me with so little warning. You will perhaps understand why a little later. I should also apologise in advance that much of this conversation lies beyond your particular area of concern however, what with the recent elections, we thought it prudent to give your ambassadorial staff time to adjust and instead approach you directly.”
He took a sip of his water. “Besides,” he said, “The People’s Commissar for Defence was very impressed by you during the recent unpleasantness in Zamimbia, so it seemed natural to ask for you.”
He leaned back and regarded the colonel with a serious look. He stopped, and a smile flashed briefly across his face. “The fact is, Colonel Skurins, that I come here with two propositions, neither of which are directed towards you personally so I do not expect an answer other than that you will have to relay it to your government. The first proposition comes with the sanction of my government, or at least parts of it.” He smiled again. “Obviously if I came with the full weight of the party then I would not need to suddenly arrive without warning. But that part is, at least, semi-official. There are parties who know that I am here for that reason, shall we say?
The second proposition is a far private initiation on mine and my fellows’ part. I will give you the courtesy, Colonel Skurins, of informing you once we have moved from the public to the private.”
He looked about the nicely apportioned office. “Do you like your posting here, Colonel Skurins? To Anahuac I mean, I would not presume to cast dispersions on your embassy. Anahuac is…” he paused for a moment, “An interesting country, is it not? There are few places like it, where the Christian and the European exist side-by-side with indigenous. We exist, do we not, at quite the fault-line Colonel Skruins?”
