I'd still like to know more about the guy before considering putting him on the cast list. Half a line vaguely hinting at why he's in-country is hardly satisfactory.

That was a simple f*** up on my part. I originally intended him to be an older, simplistic engineer. Corrected.
Secondly, Nikola Tesla was who presented the first working example of wireless telegraphy, which wasn't until 1893; I could believe that an inventor may have been dabbling in the experimental technology in 1883, but not that your average military man would be able to call himself an "expert."
Of course, the first rigid airships that were actually powered didn't appear until Count von Zeppelin's flight in July 1900. Although some will argue otherwise, the closest thing one could secede to as far as powered flights are concerned would be La France's flight in 1884, with Charles Renard and Arthur Krebs in control- a full year after this RP takes place. But, in the interest of intrigue, I assume you're referring to the Golden Age airships (with rigid frames, as I previously mentioned). Given this, I see no reason why wireless communications couldn't be included if we're talking about moving airships here in existence before their time, steam-powered jetpacks, and a non-existent colony unless you don't want the wireless skill to be in, in which case I'll just remove it from his list.
Next, I appreciate your trying to reappropriate later RL weapons as your own, but the Mosin-Nagant won't show up for almost a decade and the C96 Mauser not for another decade and a half, the Schnellfeuer (the full-auto version) wasn't until 1932.
That's a Gewehr 1878, Turkish model; not a Mosin-Nagant. Very rare find on my part. Anyway, it's true about Mauser's maschinepistole; of course, it's also true about the powered airships (that the first real one didn't appear until 1884), but again, it's your call. I can drop it and go with the rifle and bayonet. They're both period.

I'm aware this is very true, but I specifically mentioned that anachronism in the OP and I understand your reasoning with the wireless, but I just don't see that tech in my warped little fantasy world. To me, wireless would remove too much of the gritty inconvenience I like so much about it.

As for the jetpack, I was really hesitant to allow it and only yielded because it was too fantastical, cool, and fitting to the character (all while only being somewhat practical) to pass up. If you or anyone else has a problem with it, I can disallow it.

I still maintain that the wireless tech, on the other hand, would have been really high tech for just your average ex-soldier.

That was my mistake; objection to the rifle rescinded.

Could you give me some info on the Gewehr 1878? I've heard of the Mauser/Gewehr 71 and the M1878 Kropatschek (which apparently is occasionally called "Gewehr," but looks nothing like your rifle), as well as the Gewehr 1888 (which looks pretty close to your pic), but I can't find anything on a Gewehr 1878.

I'm still against the pistol, though.

As far as character plot goes, I foresee arguments between the RAS and 32SD, namely Fangalia's Admiral and my Specialist, as to how best to eliminate the pirates. I'm not sure, but I get the feeling that we'll have different ROE and overall tactics.

Anyway, Yes, he carries the LeMat, the Henry rifle, and the Misericorde.

...The Dragoon was cap-and-ball, too, lol. Anyway, towards the later years of the LeMat's production, it was available in .44 pinfire, as well as the new (in 1865) 12mm Perrin and 11mm Chamelot-Delvigne centerfire cartridges (the shot barrel on the centerfire guns was 24ga., though), so you need not worry about troublesome percussion caps or black powder once you choose a caliber :)

I think I'll take it in the .44 pinfire.

It's ok with me. Parachutes are fine too, right?

Certainly. According to The Complete Encyclopedia of Rifles and Carbines by A.E. Hartink,
the Gewehr 78 was modeled off the demand for an improved 1871 standard rifle. While the 78 was produced in the thousands, the rifle itself was not well received by the German military, so it was traded with overseas nations for resources. The primary users resided in the Middle East, and in some parts of Asia it was a common bolt-action rifle (with limited use in South America). Persia and Turkey eventually swapped it for the G98 Mauser, though in all other areas it remained in use by soldiers. Eventually, it was disfavored entirely when the First World War came, unlocking newer, better, more standard weapons for the time that could be used.

Basic Doctrine, as taught by T'Bilisi, is to hit the enemy where he isn't with what he doesn't have or doesn't anticipate. So, expect that we ask and push for the use of less-than-honorable tactics. Hence all the earlier questions about how to kill a balloon, and how that would effect the dynamics of the fight.

Regarding what's been said about 'starting positions' I'm happy to be near other characters (ie, in the vicinity of) or factions, or start potentially start with others, but at first imagined my character as just being in the colony from the start and seeing where things go, though that might make for a slow beginning.
