0900 Hours: Warsaw Imperial Artillery School
Irene finished reading and chuckled. She took out a makeshift pencil and began writing.

Dear Ana;
Sounds wonderful! Problem with Warsaw Artillery is that in the east wing the AC's out and on the west there's no hot water. I bunk in east, but spend much of my free time in the west. As for how we don't faint? Heavy, high energy meals. Very heavy, high energy meals.
That aside, you should be hearing from Marie and Karl soon...
Enough about me, though.
Beaches? Cool! I haven't seen any in real life, although Karl has(He absoultly hates them, too sandy apparently). Regardless, thanks for being a such a great friend.

Karl looked over through a window at his volunteer platoon. He sighed and began writing.

Dear Ana:
Fuggin help please.
Apparently I was so great at Naval Officer's school that they've made me the commander for a new naval infantry squad. I have to train 14 other people who are as clueless as me and not much older in how to fight as a unit. Then we ship out to East Africa.
HELP.

Okay my troubles aside, how are you doing? Beaches any good? I personally always found them horrid places; sand gets in and on your boots and takes hours to scrape off.

While Irene gorged herself on roasted pork and chicken, Marie wrote up her own response. Unlike Irene's perfect cursive, or Karl's almost illegible scrawl, Marie was somewhere between the two.

Hello Ana. How is San Prospero? I hear it's a very nice place, if a little... Erm... Lax.
Anyway, I've asked the Sister Superior at school about many of the things that came up. As in everything, from pole dancing to models to...er...reproduction.
She seemed a little flustered, but explained everything.
I don't think I'll be able to sleep for the next week.

Karl packed up his meagre belongings. In a few hours he would be on his way to East Africa. He shoulder his G3 and sheathed his cutlass, before heading for the docks via bus.
While waiting, however, a courier caught up with him. "Unteroffizer! Letter for you!"
Karl sighed and took it, before reading though. A smile lit up on his face, and he took out a piece of looseleaf and began writing.

Dear Ana;
No problem, most of my men were my classmates a few years back. A week's training on shore, and another 3-4 weeks on ship will be sufficient.
As for why I was tipped...well, 2 reasons:
-I graduated as class valedictorian.
-East Africa is home to Port Erika. Port Erika is the largest naval base we have before the Far East, and apparently something's been going down there, communist insurgency in our colony in New Guinea, so they're sending men. That means shortages of guards, so they tapped me.
In short, I'll be spending the next 2 years standing around and looking pretty while giving myself a nice tan.

As for the question of Fonzi...
I'd wager he's denying basic goods. You have the internet, though, so go search him up.
One last thing: Yes, I do have a mobile phone. +458 777 8599.

He sealed it in an envelope and stamped it. Upon reaching the docks he placed in a mailbox and raced to join his unit.

Marie smiled as she read Ana's letter, and turned to her old typewriter; although she had a laptop, she preferred the satisfying clicks as she typed.

Dear Ana;
Thanks for responding!
Sounds wonderful! I'll see if I can visit there.
I'm doing well, by the way. Also some more good news; Irene's last day for the term ended, so she's free for the rest of the summer.
Granted she'll be spending most of the first week off catching up on her sleep, but hey, can't complain. I've let out as well, although since I live in the covent I don't really 'go home'.
By the way, Irene's going back to her father's place in Munich. She'll probably tell you about him.

Irene sat down and turned on her lamp, before dipping her quill in the inkwell.
Her father, Ludwig, opened the door. "...Hey, Irene, are you alright?"
Irene set down her quill, smiled and nodded. "Just writing to a friend before I turn in for the night."
Her father smiled back. "Alright...get some sleep, alright?"
"Alright, father."
Her father left and went downstairs.
Irene picked her quill back up, occasionally munching on hardtack, which she kept in a jar near her desk.

Hey Ana;
She got you an SE? Nice. Never really was into iPhones; harder to mess around with. Still, that's nice of her.

Also; School's out-and I passed(yay!).
I'm home right now-Munich Residenz, although whenever I can I camp out. Not as hard as it seems, just take a week's worth of biscuits, some salt, canteen, tent, and poncho, and out you is. Longest I've spent in the woods is a month.
As I've told you before, my father is King of Bavaria, etc etc etc, god me and him have heard it so often we're sick of it.
He's an alright man, keeps insisting that I stay out of the military(or, at least, take a non-combat role) though. So far this is the only place I've really disobeyed him in. Didn't complain when he sent me to finishing school, or hired a governess, or all those other things.
But anyway, that aside, he's a good man. He has a fondness for dirty jokes/gallows humor, though, although I would chalk it up to the fact that he spent a few of his younger years in the Freikorps.

How were your parents? You never said much about them.

One last thing; yes I possess a phone. It's a Samsung Galaxy S7 and I use it as a makeshift grenade.
Just kidding. Yes, it's a S7, but I got the issues fixed. There's a tinkerer near the Residenz, doesn't charge too much, and an absolute wizard at tech. Number is +484-476-9888.

Day 8

Now that Ana knew everyone's phone number, she decided to try out her new phone's texting function. Sitting in the living room with the letters, she got to work writing her texts to Irene, Karl and Marie. To her surprise, the phone allowed her to text all 3 of them at once! And the full touchscreen keyboard was much easier to use than the T9 keyboards common in Portugal. She didn't even have to press hard – the touchscreen reacted to all her taps like magic! Wow, Salazar is really keeping people in the dark, she thought. Ana began typing her message to the trio, using abbreviations to fit 140 letters.

Hey u guys! My new phone works & its so ez 2 use!
Ive got unlimited txting so u can txt me everyday!

She hit "Send", sat back and smiled.

Karl was in the middle of the Mediterranean, and the ship's comms were undergoing repairs, so he couldn't respond.

Marie and Irene, though, were able to respond.

Marie: Morning(evening? dunno lol), Ana! How you doing? Did you get our letters yet?
Irene: Hey there m8, how you doing?

Irene wrapped a package of hardtack biscuits in wax paper, before placing it inside a box. She then took a jar of molasses and wrapped it in bubble sheets, and then placing it on top of the biscuits.
Finally she placed a note inside, before sealing the box with duct tape and sending it to San Prospero.

Hey Ana;
I decided to send you some of the stuff I keep lying around for when I want to go hiking.
This is hardtack. Think of them as crackers. Rather bland eaten alone, but excellent when dipped in molasses or honey. I included a jar for you to try as well.

Irene smiled when she received the text. She then responded.

Glad you liked it! PS; forgot to send beef jerky as well, will correct.

With that done, she fired up her laptop. Their exchange had taught her much about Portugal, and her mind had long been preoccupied with this project.

But first...
Irene placed 5 20-strip packets inside the box. After a few moments of thought, she grabbed a blank flash drive, downloaded a few songs onto it(The ones in your TGs), and then placed it back in the box.
With that over she sealed it, went downstairs, and dropped it off.
She then headed back up and sat down in front of her laptop. She fired up her word Processor and began typing.

Within a day she had the rough draft.
Within 3 days she had mailed it to a publisher.
Within 5 days her pamphlet was being printed en-masse, under the name of "On Portugal", and was being sent to bookstores and newsstands around the country.
Within a week, Prussian-Polish ships passing Portugal would dump hundreds of glass bottles containing her pamphlet into the sea, hoping that some would make it to shore.
Numerous copies would end up in San Prospero, and, most likely, inside the halls of power of Portugal's government.
