Merchants' Spring Festival (PT, IC)

Postby The Selkie » Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:36 am

Hello and welcome to the Merchants' Spring Festival!
Please apply here and be accepted before posting here - reading along is always welcome, though!

Ainmhí-Square, Leuda.
20th of March 1718.

The morning was beautiful. Even in Leuda's harsher climate, harsher then the Archipelago, for example, one rarely got a morning of a Spring Festival, that was this beautiful. Usually, one still had to fight snow and cold.
This year, a surprising bout of warmth had entered from the south. It wouldn't last, but it would be enjoyed for the time being.
The time being – being the Spring Festival of 1718.
The Merchant Guild of Leuda once again sponsored a trade fair along with it, the Grand Temple of Gavida had the pleasure of hosting the wedding of the Enjoy of Gavida to their God, Miss Amy Bolgán of the Tribe of Cork already being a sight to behold. The Mercenaries, who would offer their services to the highest bidder again and would hold a tournament.
Half an hour after the Spring Sacrifice, the Trade Fair would open at the Counting House by the harbour – the harbour was full of vessels, many of local origin, but also quite a few from abroad, a sight to behold for curious eyes.
But even the most curios child would not miss this for anything in the world: The Spring Sacrifice.
Once a year, the Selkie, who abhorred sacrificing living things to their Gods, offered them a horse of good stock, an unblemished colt or filly, never mounted, neither by man nor by woman, the only time, when they would not offer up their sweat, their tears, their prayers and incense to their Gods.
Every man, woman and child, which could, had come to the Ainmhí-Square to watch the proceedings.
The horse was led through the masses by a young woman, brown haired and beautiful, dressed in a white, silken robe, escorted by two horsemen, officers of the City Guard of Leuda of high esteem, their lances held high as the moved through the crowd, who lowered their heads for Miss Bolgán as she moved towards the altar.
The High Priestess of Gavida already waited with three young Priestesses in Geansai at her sides, the ceremonial dagger in one hand and the herbs in the other. The horse, a fuchsia-brown filly with a white mane and bright, green eyes, was nervous as it was led up to the bowl, which would collect the blood.
The Selkie were silent, no song was sung as the sacrifice for the God of Arts and Crafts was prepared. Once there, the herbs, which were supposed to calm the filly down, were fed to it and indeed, it became calmer...
...as it was led to the bronze bowl. Once there, a low song was begun by the Selkie, a song about Spring and Flowers and Love, a sung prayer for all three, which grew louder and louder... until the ceremonial dagger was plunged into the horse's throat.
One swift move later, the horse was bleeding out into the bowl, calmly and with calm words being whispered into the ear of the filly.
And as it closed its eyes, the High Priestess, an elder woman clad in Geansai in the natural colours of the fur, Gavida's Colours, raised her bloodied dagger and the crowd cheered. The young Priestesses at her side lowered their heads and eased the equine down as it bled out. Two men brought a large canvas, that would play a larger role later, but for now, a long line of young men and women, who would turn fifteen Springs, adult, today, formed, Miss Bolgán in the lead.
She put her hand in the horse blood and pressed it onto the canvas, leaving a mark and thus telling the Gods, that she was an adult now.
Their parents and siblings and caretakers awaited them.
Spring, they knew, would come. A new year had begun and the merchant's would make their deals, with the goods they had brought from far and wide – many a silver coin would change hands today, many wares being dealt with, from tools to mercenaries.
Today, they would celebrate exactly that – Spring, new year, life and merchantry.
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.
My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.

The vampire entrepeneur Liem from Dwipantra licked his lips as he watched the blood drip from the horse. He wanted blood and it has been a while since he last drink some. He whispered to his assisntant, a green-scaled naga, asking her to find out if any were sold in the festival.

The new year setting upon the newly formed Kuronami Kingdoms a group of two joint nations formed together to protect themselves from invasion, divine revelation or simple trickery? Well who could complain. But a new Kingdom needed trading partners for public and private alike which is where the West Kronor Trading Company had come in. A family of merchants eager to expand their business had set off on a long mission to find would be clients and even new routes. It wasn't easy but now they were here the sort of junior patriarch of the family, Noah, age 21, his younger brother Hiram, age 18 having just come of age ready to really claim his birthright in the family business and finally Gabriel, 16. Really she wasn't sure why she was dragged along ohter than to peddle what her mother wanted her to peddle, because apparently only women can really sell women's items. Women can be sailors, soldiers, farmers in Kuronami but why is it presumed only a woman can sell womanly products like dresses, bonnets, boots, umbrellas.

Really she was thinking it was a ploy by their parents to get them all married. Well Noah was certainly eager to find a woman not just any woman a woman who'd hold her own against him on the seas. Hiram could go either way, have a fun trip and make some money or find a potential love of his life. Gabe however she wasn't so eager to find a man or woman if she just wanted to be more curious. But here in this place seeing them sacrifice a HORSE in the name of the heavens made her feel ill. "Oh so barbaric!"

"It's no big deal, it's just like putting a horse down on a farm or something only this is for a ritual" Noah dryly replied to her.

"Wow it's pretty cool." was all Hiram thought

"Don't know how we really expect to sell anything in this place." Gabe put her handkerchief away "Much less clothing, look at the furs on them."

"We have plenty of furs we traded in our last port, we might be able to really trade or make a sale on them if that's what they like to wear." Hiram thought it out, he was the more savvy one when it came to the business side of things, Noah was more of a sailor and seaman than anything, guess befitting of his name.

"Well either way it's best if we can unload the rest of our cargo before we think about adding more." Noah said "What do we have left?"

"Let's see, two boxes full of clothing, half eastern Kuronami and 1/3 western Kuronami." That being clothing tailored in the western parts of the country more suitable to nations of the modern "Western culture" and vice versa. "Another 16 sacks of flour, wheat, shuck, tow. We're minus the 5 we bailed during the storm before getting here. If we can even unload just another 1/5 we can balance out the rest to take home."

"God willing," Gabe bitterly replied "We barely made it through the storm here!"

"It's just part of sailing, Gabe you run into bad weather at times, we got through didn't we?"

"You're good Noah, but you're still a far off sailor from Papa's league. Not to mention ships ten times our size have set sail only to never come back." She opened up her parasol to keep off the growing sunlight of her face. Noah sighed, his sister was not a traveler but this was a family business and it was expected all the children were going to take it over.

"You really need a man" Hiram joked at her expense

"Hush! I'll court and wed when I bloody well please!"

"You know the women who often say that often become spinsters!" Hiram teased her

"I swear Hiram when you're asleep in your bunk I'll toss you over!"

"All right the both of you!" Noah said with their voices getting raised it was causing a bit of a scene drawing some onlooker attention. "We're here to do business and business is what we're going to do."

"Right" They both sullenly replied to him.

"Say, dearest brother" Gabe turned her tone from annoyed and frustrated to her sweet and innocent charm she used to get something "Perhaps if we unload all our cargo we can trade in our little schooner for a sizable Galleon! I bet we could barter one cheaper here."

"We only have a 5 crew including me and Hiram, going up to that would easily cost is way more than what this trip is costing and some, plus the need of crew. I keep telling you, you don't have to worry, I got us all the way here didn't i? I'll get us home."

She sighed, her charms only worked so often. "If you say so!"

"Here," He handed her about 110 Kronor. "110 there! Make yourself useful and find somethings to buy that will fetch us a higher price in Kuronami."

"Fine fine." She took the cash and set along the row of merchants that laid before her

"No more than for yourself, Gabe!" He called after her.

"You sure she should be given even that much?" Hiram asked with a chuckle in his voice. Noah replied, "If there is at least one thing Gabe is good at, it's putting on that annoying charm of hers. It's how she haggles little bro. She'll be fine, worse comes to worse she finds a few trinkets either way good to have her out of my hair for a while. Hey the knives, bring those out, something tells me these people are into blades and knives."

"Don't replace a good musket if you ask me but if you say so" Hiram did as told pulling out an array of handcrafted knives.

While a whole lot of things were sold at such occassions, the closest thing to selling blood was blood sausage: Based on a filler, typically fat, onion and barley, these sausages were filled with the blood of a cow or a sheep, cooked, dried and then cooled until they were solid. And solid they were.
The closest vendor of such sausages, which a friendly passer-by directed the naga to, was still putting the finishing touches onto his stall, but he agreed to give the naga a small sample with her to see, if her boss liked the blood sausages, sending her back - today was a day of business for him and silver was good no matter if it came from non-human hands or not.

The Trade Fair.
The Trade Fair near the Counting House would not open for another half an hour, but the last finishing touches were already applied. Most vendors in fact already had people looking at their wares, so the young woman, Gabe, did not draw much attention to her in general... her dress, however, did draw a few looks.
Quite a few vendors served a local market, but some worked for exporting as well - and with someone so foreign, it would be a mistake to not draw her attention. A few vendors with furs, their finest products on display, from Tine to Grey Wolf, a vendor with dyes, his colours on his sample-pieces shining in the morning sun, a wool-merchant next to him cooperating, they all tried their luck.
A whiskey vendor, a man with flaming red hair, did not try his luck with this delecate foreign flower, because while Selkie-women loved his brew, foreign women often disagreed with it.
And there was a shipbuilder, who had small models of his vessels on display - one could either buy the models or the vessels or both. A point of his pride were three vessels of the Capall na dTonn Type, as Historians in later centuries would come to call them, bowsprit, two masts, trapezoid sails. The models themselves gave the impression of highly agile and fast vessels, capable of operating in shallow waters and the open ocean alike, but also requiring only a small crew.
It was a start of the day.

With Hiram and Noah.
"Indeed.", a voice agreed, belonging to a young woman, clad in armour.
Her hair was of a lime-green colour, long and unbound, her eyes like sapphires, as she looked at the offered knives. She wore the half-cuirass typical for the Selkie, especially their horsemen, which protected her chest (sizeable, but bound back), resting on an undershirt, the rest of her torso protected by a leather corset. A very short skirt protected her modesty, tassets her hips, while thigh-high horsemen boots clad her feet and lower legs. Her half-cuirass was of a deep blue, with golden decorations at the edges, small shoulder pauldrons with a similar colouring on her shoulders. Her upper arms were bare, muscles visible, but not overly so, while her lower arms were dressed in detached sleeves, which were held in place by leather bands.
A helmet of the Cuircín, or Comb Style, sat on her belt, together with a sabre and a pair of gloves.
"A good rifle is hard to replace, but sometimes, one finds oneself in the need of more means.", she said and inspected the offered knifes, before looking up to inspect both merchants, her eyes sparkling. "Or in the need of a tool to do other things. It all depends on the persons. The two of you aren't from around these parts, right?"

"Ah good morning!" Noah greeted the lovely woman clad in armor before them. "Welcome to our little stand" (I presume merchants have stands or booths they can vend from).

"A good morning to you, Milady" Hiram greeted her "Hey bro she's a real looker huh?" He whispered to him

"Ah shhh. Let me do business a sec huh?" He whispered back then returned to talking to the Selkie woman. "Welcome to EKTC, as you can see we have several hand crafted blades forged by some fine smiths of our new Empire. These particular ones were forged in our western parts while these more curved ones were formed in the Orient East. Now both have strong advantages to them, the curving blade is odd but surprisingly useful especially for those expert swordsmen. I've seen them slice clean through a thick plank of wood! But you can't go wrong with a good blade of traditional craft. We have most sizes here from full swords to small bow knife."

"Easy on the pitch, Bro something tells me she knows everything." Hiram slapped his elder brother on the shoulder

Gabe took a look around the stands of the many vendors who were about. She felt a few stares but she was a foreigner here so it wasn't that odd. "So much to see" She muttered honestly a bit at a loss where she could begin. Even if her brother just sent her off to get her out of his hair a bit she still figured she'd buy something worthwhile. The idea of a new ship sill weighed on her mind, as her family's business was growing their fleets would need to grow as well. Not to mention there was plenty of stuff here. "These are quite some ships." She admired the models laid out before her.

With Hiram and Noah.
"Everything might be a bit too much.", the woman said and smiled a sunny smile as she took one of the curved short swords, holding it against her gloved hand, resting the blade on her palm, measuring. She had followed the explanation as she inspected the blades. "But enough... curved blades, for example, are not only good for cutting trees, but also for closer combat, but also allowing to draw the blade against an opponent at a much more effective angle and concentration of force." She let a beat pass, as she looked to the two brothers again. "Indeed, a bit like an axe actually."
She looked to Noah, wheighing the curved short sword in her hand.
"One can not go wrong with traditional crafts from expert craftsmen.", she said and looked the weapon up and down again, making a few test swings at an imaginery target. Satisfied, she nodded, looked to Noah. "How much would that be? In Gil, preferably?"

The Trade Fair.
The vendor, an older gentleman with formerly red, now red-grey hair but sparkling blue eyes, of that stall nodded.
"They are, young Miss.", he said and nodded with a grin, indicating to one of the models. "We call those Capall na dTonn. In your tongue, that would be 'Horse of the Waves', and like any good horse, they are a force like no other." He smiled tenderly. "That particular one has the name Faoileán Scadán, which would mean 'Herring Gull'. She was built this winter, here in Leuda, in the Docks down by the harbour. Twenty men would be sufficient to crew her, on account of her four cannons. Without them, six would be sufficient. Interested in seeing her?"

The naga returned to her master, handing him a sample of the sausage. He tried it, and nodded in contempt. He asked her to take him to he vendor who sold them, and the three-person party went to see said vendor.

"You do seem to know your blades plenty well, I'd say that's admirable. Well for pricing can depend, for a single sword we charge about 200 Kronor for that, which I would imagine would be 350 Gil. For a bundle of swords it may run 2500 Gill. That said we can talk on price." He wasn't much of a haggler frankly if not careful this lovely woman could very well get the price to zero if she really wanted.

Hiram was just too amused frankly the girl was pretty he'd let his big bro have a freebie with this one.

"Cannons you say?" She replied both surprised but not surprised "Yes, cannons are a wise investment the seas grow more perilous by the day, with not just weather to contend too but also scoundrels who seek to plunder." She nodded still thinking how her brothers and parents were to react to the idea of mounting cannons even aboard their little schooner. My good sir, I would very much like to see the ship if you'd so kindly take me to her. By chance you also the captain or are you just a seller?"

The lady Juliana West and her bodyguard, Sir Marlon of Star Crag, stood watching the sacrifice among the general audience. She had been pleasantly surprised by the weather today, she had heard that these lands could be much colder then Ru during the springtime, so she had brought a heavy fur jacket along with her, even though the rocky western islands of her home region were notably colder and rainier then the mainland to the east. Today however, the weather was simply perfect and she did not need it. So she wore instead a simply leather coat, jerkin, boots and breeches. It was very unassuming garb, and yet she had drawn strange looks from the locales all day, which made her a little uncomfortable admittedly, and for a moment or two thought it was due to her outfit, which was a very unusual choice for a woman back home. But then she'd quickly realize that these people had likely never seen a drailen before, so of course she'd draw attention and curiosity. To some, she must've looked like some kind of monster.

She was not hard to look at though by Ruvian standards. Peach skin, brilliant light green eyes and long wild light lavender hair, with a sleek long tail, which was always considered an attractive quality amongst the drailen. Her sworn sword standing beside her was a rather rough looking knight, a slightly older man and a human. With long lanky arms a large chin, large nose, and a big bushy mustache. His outfit was not all that different from Juliana's, despite being a knight. Clearly he didn't feel as though this new country would prove all that dangerous.

"Animal sacrifice, reminds me of the tales of the Old Faith in the east." Juliana remarked, "Though apparently they only do this once a year, on this day." The Caellian faith she, and almost all of Ru, practiced had adopted and copied a great many things from the Old Faith of the Dragon Pantheon and incorporated it into it's own rituals, though Caellians sacrificed dried flowers, incense, and fragrant oils rather then the animals that the dragon priests had done. The young lady visitor was fascinated by the selkie's ritual and the new culture but reminded herself that she should be primarily concerned with her true purpose for coming. She had brought many trade goods from Ru that she was confident could not be found in these lands typically and expected to make a small fortune. She had brought fine wine, cheeses, and olives. As well as some Caellian religious artifacts and trinkets to pique the locals' curiosity: prayer beads, oils, incense, and dragonfly necklaces. But it was the fiery hot peppers and eastern Ruvian spices and silks that were the highlight of her wares. Merchants from far off lands would become wealthier then great lords from traveling to Ru and returning home with a shipment of spices, and it didn't work any different from a Ruvian making the journey themselves to distance lands where such things could not easily be found.
A civilization with an over 3,000 year history of lizard people killing each other and enslaving everyone else. Now they've finally calmed down and formed a modern westernized constitutional monarchy. (long live Emperor Yoshio!)

Note: Any factbook entries over a year old are severely out of date and may be subject to extreme revision and retconning soon. If you have questions on anything about Ru, please feel free to ask.

With Hiram and Noah.
The woman was silent for a moment - 350 Gils?! For one sword?!
350 Gils... at those times, basically since ancient times, the Gil was a currency held valuable by the worth of the coin itself, currency money, as the experts called it. The precious metal of choice for the Selkie has always been silver, gold being a rarely employed precious metal. A Gil was a silver coin of one ounce of silver, as pure as the technology permitted.
Now, a rifle, like Selkie-Dragan usually used it, would cost around 50 Gil, depending on the quality. The higher the quality, the higher the price, of course adding for decorations and similar things. In other words, he asked her to pay the price for seven rifles of average quality ... for a short sword.
For comparison, a blacksmith made a finely decorated and silver-hilted sword for 80 Gils, a showpiece and not a weapon, which were far less lavish and thus cheaper.
The woman let another beat pass, looking Noah up and down... deciding, that he was cute. He did not deserve to fall flat on his face like that, if only by his politeness and cute looks. His brother did not make a good impression on her.
She carefully placed the blade down, then reached into a pouch, retrieving a sparkling silver coin, a Gil.
"A Gil.", she explained as she put it into his hand, motioning for him to come closer to her so that she didn't have to speak so loud and maybe draw unwanted attention. "I do not know, how much the Kronor is worth, but I doubt, that the exchange rate is one to one-point-seven-five." She let a beat pass. "Ring it, that one is silver."
She knew, that if he struck the coin with another metal object, for example another coin, it would produce a soft chime, a clear sign, that her coin was indeed silver - a trick known to many merchants.
"You might want to adjust your prices a bit.", she suggested.

The Trade Fair.
The man laughed.
"No, I'm just the seller!", he said and shook his head, "No, the Captain of that beauty is this young man here." At this, a young man, a redhead with sparkling, charming blue eyes and a cocky smile stepped to his side, dressed in an oilsking coat and a shirt and pants underneath it. "If I may introduce, Finnegan Raon of the Tribe of Monaghan, Captain of the Faoileán Scadán, both available for purchase and hiring."
"Charmed.", the younger man added with a smile. His accent shining through, a thick accent letting that singular word sound like an ode to the entire existance.
"If you wish, the good Captain will show her to you... just a little warning, though, he's not the most talkative one.", the seller said with a grin, "But I'm sure, that the Faoileán Scadán will do more then enough of the talking."

The vendor in question was a man in his middle ages, a butcher with his stall now finished, proudly proclaiming him to be a butcher from the Butcher Association of Rainse, the sign written in Selkie and their runes, having with him the finest sausages that area, mostly famous for its raising of livestock of all kinds, could offer.
As meat was highly perishable and refrigeration was still a while out, the Selkie preferred to either dry, cure or smoke their meat for longer journeys. The blood sausages were smoked, but he had all sorts of meat with him, a lot of samples to get as many customers as he could to buy from his association.
He hadn't really been fazed by the Naga, but when she returned with her master, he wore a smile... and sent his assistant and daughter, a black-haired lassie with steel-blue eyes in a tight leather dress, that emphasized her two 'argumentation amplifiers', to fetch more of the blood sausage.

Indeed, the Ruvians did draw a few odd looks, more then enough, especially the Drailen - while the Selkie knew, that there was non-human intelligent life, it popped up every now and then in all forms and colours, but it still was highly unusual. However, no one saw any reason to look at her with suspicion as long as she didn't do anything suspicious.
Most of the attention focussed on her came from people of small height, mini-humans usually known as children. Curious children at that, who watched her as long as their parents allowed before pulling them away.
They were in general given a bit of a berth, which made it easier for the young man to find them. He was a chap with red-brown hair, freckles, green eyes, neither particularly tall or matured, more like a boy in his mid-teens. He grinned as he pushed himself through the crowds.
To be honest, he had a rather simple description to work from: A tall lizard-lady, escorted by a human.
His employer had sent him, his employer being a merchant for spices - well aware of the immense price such produce could fetch in the right harbours.
"Excuse me!", he called as soon as possible, nearly drowned by the din of the festival and trade fair starting up, "Excuse me, Lady West! Please wait for a moment!"
His grin did not vanish as he pushed through the crowd towards the two of them.

He managed to get their attention and the two turned to face him. Juliana smirked a bit at the "Lady" part, it was not a title she was used to being given back home, or at least not mockingly. Sir Marlon took a step between her and this stranger a bit apprehensively but stopped as his companion pushed past him confidently. "Ah, well hello sir," she said with curious smile. "I did not expect anyone in this land to know who I am and seek me out, what can I do for you?" Perhaps he was some kind of servant from one of this nation's merchant houses, she assumed that there would surely be a record of her cargo at the docks, and a savvy merchant would be sure to gain access to those records in some way. If she was right this could be a good opportunity, and a good sign that she was right about the high value of her goods.

Noah was a bit shell shocked and at a loss for words at her shooting down his pricing.

"Aaah" Hiram took up position in place of his brother "Forgive my older brother here!" He chuckled "He tends to overvalue things based on the old trades and practices of the old kingdom. Dear Maiden, my name is Hiram and let us strike up a deal huh? You're right 350 for one is simply too much. What do you think about either 45 per sword or 100 for a set? Now I'm really knocking down prices. Now if not money we're always up to trade or something good in exchange."

"Ah yeah..." Noah trailed off unable to really summon the words, that's why his expertise was a mariner more than a merchant. Hiram seemed more suited for the family trade line if anything.

"Now take a look at a few more of these butties, these hand crafted blades were forged by two smiths outside the city a quaint family operation." he continued on while Noah eyed the pretty young lady a bit more even though she showed him up a bit she certainly was pretty.

With the Ruvians.
Now standing in front of the Ruvian, the young lad got a good feeling about how small he was... or how tall the Drailin. She would look down onto him, mostly because he was indeed short.
Be it, as it may be, he had a mission from his boss: "Indeed, Lady West, my boss and mentor wants me to seek you out to ask to come to him if you are interested in selling your spices and silk to him for a good price.", he explained after a moment, then bowed his head. "You might have heard of him, Master Finnegan Ceannaitheoir of the Tribe of Wicklow is his name, one of the Guild Masters of the Merchant Guild, responsible for the Spice Trade." He looked up and grinned. "And having a small side-business with silks and textiles."
Looking to Lady West's escort, he nodded to him as well. "Of course, Sir Marlon would be very welcome, too."

With Hiram and Noah.
"Lilianne.", the woman introduced herself as her eyes were directed at the swords from a 'quaint family operation'. "Liliane Lannaire of the Tribe of Louth. Indeed, we can strike up a deal." She directed her eyes to Noah for a moment, threw him a small, apologetic smile, quite embarrassed, that her words had that much of an impact on him. Then she turned back to the swords. "40 for one sword, a hundred for a set."
She mulled it over for a moment.
"Tell me, Hiram, what wares in exchange for these swords would strike your fancy?", she asked. "I could offer you quite a few goods in exchange."
Truth being told, she was a mercenary, alone, after her previous banner had been wiped out by a Robber-Baron. Of course, she had been victorious in the end, but but only barely. The last members of her former banner had retired or were dead. She was not exactly swimming in money from the bounty, but they had been allowed to keep the wares the robber had stolen and plundered.
Quite a few expensive things were amongst that, furs, jewelry of Selkie-Origin, a few spare horses of good stock, rifles and horseman pistols, and a few bolt of Selkie-Silk, all shared equally amongst the survivors, leaving her with a bit of jewelry, a few spare weapons, two bolts of Selkie-Silk (and a dress made of it). The Selkie never produced much of that fabric, that was true, but it was fine silk, quite different from the silk others produced. Rarely, they exported it, though.
"Or would you prefer using them as a prepayment for my services?", she asked with a small smile.

Gabe and Finnegan.
The seller grinned. "Then the Faoileán Scadán will be just the right thing for you!", he remarked and nodded to Finnegan. "Show her your vessel."
The Captain, really not a man of many words, nodded. "Then come, Young Lady.", he said. There was a glint in his eyes, one which one would have trouble placing. "This way. It's the fastest way."
He stayed close to her, not wanting to loose this business opportunity as he led her off the main street, past a few vendors selling more obscure wares, talismans and remedies of doubtable quality, or at least ingredients for them, like eyeballs floating in vinegar, as one shopowner proudly displayed to them, offering it to Gabe as a remedy for making her chest develop and her skin strong, yet soft.
Not even the Captain was sure, whether or not the eyeball was from an animal or not.

The vampire ordered more of the sausages and patiently waited in front of the stall. As he did, his bodyguard, a large man wearing Egyptian attire with the head, fur and hooves of a bovine, inspected the stall next to it. He browsed and occassionaly spoke to the shopkeeper, asking about some of the things that were sold.

Juliana had not in fact heard of him, but she thought it better not to mention it. She was still unfamiliar with this land and it's major power-brokers but this man certainly seemed like a very powerful merchant, and she knew that such men often commanded and demanded the same respect as great lords, so she was not about to imply any insult to his honor. She bowed her head politely, "Ah yes, excellent! I am quite surprised, and happy that I have gained your master's attention. I am eager to meet with him as this could be a great opportunity for us all. Pray tell, do you know if he has a time he would like to meet, or would he rather us come right away?" She did not want to keep the Guild Master waiting, he was a man of power and prestige in the area who would know the market well, perhaps she would find the riches she journeyed for already, if he was interested in buying out her stock himself or at the very least, he could provide invaluable advice and information on where in the city she could expect to find the most success for her various goods.

The grizzled knight nodded pleasantly enough at the last part of the young man's statement. "Ah yes, of course." He agreed.
A civilization with an over 3,000 year history of lizard people killing each other and enslaving everyone else. Now they've finally calmed down and formed a modern westernized constitutional monarchy. (long live Emperor Yoshio!)

"Lilianne" He repeated "It's a pleasure to meet you." He gave a thought "Well these swords are crafted but we have many fine craftsmen so I'm gonna get this right and be reasonable. Swords for swords is always good in equal trade. There's also gold or silver, we won't be to demanding in that. Fine jewels, crafts that can fetch a good price in markets and trades. Furs, muskets. The strange foreigner didn't have to wait for long, the vendor's assistant and daughter, still in the tight leather dress, came with a few more samples on a platter, a fork lying at the ready to assist in taste-testing. She smiled at the odd group, her steel-blue eyes sparking as her father left her with the foreign customers.
"There you go, Sir.", she said and offered the plate, around a dozen different sausages arranged on it, "All the way from Rainse in the Trossach, smoked sausages, blood sausages and raw sausages, which were air dried. With the friendliest recommendations from the Butchers' Association of Rainse, for you to taste test."
She gave a slightly coy smile as she leaned forward a bit to offer the plate.

Meanwhile, the bodyguard looking over the stall next to the sausage stall would be confronted with a stall offering Soláthar, as the Selkie called it - Provisions. Food for long trips, be they by sea or by land, from dried fruits and Scipeáil (a popular pastry made of breadcrumbs, dried fruit and sweetener between two small layers pastry) to, of course, Buan, dark meat dried at the open air, ground down for easier transportation and, when needed, cooked into a soup or the base for one, depending on the available ressources.
That stuff wouldn't perish for years, as the vendor explained.

"That is up to you.", the young man replied, having a rought idea about the thoughts in the Ruvians' heads, knowing, what the title of Guild Master did to foreigners and the implications it had to them - which actually did not differ that much from the implications they had for Selkie. In fact, the young man believed, that the implications were stronger for Selkie, as a Guild Master usually commanded not only a lot of respect, but also power, richness and other forms of influence, including the more violent forms of it. "However, I can tell you, that my Mentor is not a patient person and does not like to be left waiting."
The implication was clear, to a Selkie: If you left him waiting, you showed him disrespect - not enough to draw his ire, but definately enough to be noted. And that did not mention the usual power-play games of who let's whom waiting.

With Hiram and Noah.
Liliane thought for a moment.
She was a Dragan, more comfortable on horseback then on the seas, especially when it came to crewing a vessel, but her father had been a fisherman, so she knew the basics. And if that was not enough, there were other ways in how she could be of use on a vessel, she knew that. However, the admission, that ressources were a bit tight at the moment made her rethink a possible business engagement with the merchants.
Weapons for weapons was always a nice trade, but she figured, that she could get at least two swords per rifle - and she did have rifles, not muskets, there was an important difference. The latter was also more expensive, so that could be a good argument.
Jewelry, Gold and Silver - she had actually planned to sell that seperately, not to exchange that for anything other then money.
The furs might as well be a good option, she had little use for them.
"We might be able to come to an arrangement.", she said, "However, I do not have the goods for such an exchange on hand right now. If I may ask you to lend me your partner..." She threw Noah a smile. "...I can take him to my storage so that he can inspect the wares I could offer in exchange - or, if they are not to his liking, we might be able to talk about a job arrangement benefitting both of us?"

Gabe and Finnegan.
Finnegan nodded.
"Those are in the Counting House.", he grunted in reply, then spoke a few words in Selkie to the merchant with the eyeballs. Said merchant nodded and retreated. Explaining, he told Gabe: "I told her, that you were not interested."
With that, they proceeded, towards the harbour and through the alleys. It didn't take long for them to get only a small square, where a lot of persons of rather shady appearance sold - they did not offer business contracts, but only wares. That quite a bit of those wares were not acquired by legal means.
"Hot goods.", Finnegan explained gruffly as he hurried her along, across the square, where one could hear a busy harbour beyond a few houses.

"I really don--" He was going to protest a bit but Hiram could sense his little brother was up to something he certainly chased him around long enough to know. "All right. Maybe these Selkie people were pirates but who really knows as long as they didn't bother them coming in or going out it didn't matter much to Gabe and as long as they had good ships and good stuff it all would work out in the end. With Noah.
Leading him through Leuda, and leaving Hiram with the stall soon occupied by another visitor interested in the swords, Liliane gave Noah a wide smile. "Don't worry, Noah. I am rather inexperienced in my job as well, but we both know, what we are doing."
At least I hope so in my case., she added in thought.
"So, you are a sailor at heart and not a merchant?", she asked, taking his hand into hers, so that they did not loose each other in the crowds, "I am a mercenary, a Dragan. I must admit, that I only went to sea twice, once to Jazirat Alshahwa and once back, two years ago. I... sort-of liked it. I'm more used to horseback then to... shipback-riding." She smiled. "But I know my way around a Wave-Horse and a Seol. My Dad's a fisherman, you know?"
She let a few beats pass as they moved through the crowds.
"My... 'storehouse' is not far away.", she added with a wide smile.

Gabe and Finnegan.
"No, not far.", Finnegan said as they moved across the square, towards another small alley. "Just a few minutes."
Hot goods, in this case, meant indeed stolen goods and plunder - not acquired by piracy, though, at least not in the waters of the Lands of the Selkie. That was the stuff taken by Robber-Barons and mercenaries, the difference was sometimes rather wavy, when they wrecked havoc onto the enemies of those who paid them. It was an essential part of how the world worked these days, at least the world of military operations.
And the Selkie, as mercenaries, of course had a bit of a part in that.

"Ah, I see. In that case we'd be happy to meet with him right now, if you would be so kind as to show us the way?"

With the Ruvians.
The young man did not know about Juliana's thoughts about maybe gifting his Mentor with a bottle of wine as a gesture of good will, but if he had, he would have not spoken up - and allowed her to walk right into the backfire. It was a cultural no-go around these parts to gift a host or Master of the House with a beverage or something to drink, for that implicated, that the beverages served were sub-par to the guest, which was a grave insult to any host.
Instead, he smiled: "Right this way, Lady West.", he spoke and turned on the heels, towards the Old Counting House, the massive structure of stone and wood having been enlarged a few years back. Four storeys high, the structure crowned by a pitched roof was the centre of operations of the MGoL, the Merchant Guild of Leuda, for centuries and for centuries to come the prime authority of foreign trade with, to, from and by the Lands of the Selkie. It was not the headquarters, those were in Downtown Leuda, but a building busy no matter the time of day or indeed day, as it was busy today, too.
MGoL-Guards guarded the building, men and women, which were most likely more elite then the City Guard of Leuda, while in the inner Grand Hall of Wares, as it was called, harbourworkers moved material, crates and everything else from A to B and in and out of the building. The Grand Hall of Wares occupied three storeys alone, the fourth being the merchant's meeting space and a few other functions.
The young man walked towards it like an arrow leaving a bow's sinew, but slow enough for the guests to follow.
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.
My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.

Those who knew of Ruvian custom would be able to easily understand how such a potential mistake could be made, since in Ru it was typically expected that a food or beverage gift from a guest to be put aside for the hosts to enjoy later, rather then share with the guest. This was because it was of such cultural importance to the Ruvians that a guest under a host's roof partake of the host's food and drink, since this invokes the ancient and sacred laws of hospitality, that trace their origins all the way back to the days of the old polytheistic faith thousands of years ago, but is still held in the dangerous and oftentimes treacherous feudal Ruvian society to this day. These customs strictly prohibited guests or hosts doing harms to one another while under the host's roof, and respect for them is so universal within Ru, that even the most notoriously unscrupulous and lawless landowners dared not violate it.

Juliana was impressed by the guild-house as they approached, the Western Isles may be bleak, stormy little rocks far off the Ruvian coast, but many of the lords of these rocks were richer then mainland lords whose lands were far larger, for the Tarnookan tribes that it's peoples hailed from had always been proud traders and sailors centuries before they were brought into the empire, and these skills brought great wealth to the islands, both during the Ruvian slave trade and well after it's demise. Still, this hall more then rivaled most of the island keeps she was familiar with. It struck her that while fuedal lords reigned supreme in Ru, it was likely the case that in this land, it was the guilds that held the true power.

She did not fail to notice the female guards and couldn't help but be taken by surprise, as such a thing would be very unusual indeed back in Ru. She remembered that this new land had thier own customs and ways of doing things, and was actually quite relieved to see them, as it made her much less concerned that her own outfit would make her stand out or make her look as lowborn or unbecoming of a lady in the company of a high society type like the guildmaster as much a she previously thought. Sir Marlon was even more surprised, but like his savvy and worldly companion he hid it well, giving them a professional, solemn nod as they passed, from one solider to another.

Life was such a cheap commodity. Robert closed his eyes. He sucked the air in through his nose, the smell of life was beautiful. The sea, the people, the marked, the horses and…spring. He could smell spring. He could no longer remember how many man he had killed. He knew what fate lay in store for the little horse. He did not want to watch it with his own eyes. Memories flashed through his brain, the throats he had slit, the skulls he had cracked, the hearts he had pierced and the fires. Muzzle flashes, exploding ships, roaring cannons he had seen it all.

A part of your soul dies every time you take a life. He thought. He did not feel sorry for the horse. He envied it, he would gladly give his own life for this one moment of peace the beautiful thing must have experienced at the hands of this marvellous woman. With his eyes still closed he could smell the blood. The smell of death mixing with the smell of life. He smiled. They are good people, honest, decent people. It is almost like coming home.

On his long journeys all over the oceans he had heard lots of stories about the people of this land, their rites and customs. He had never set foot in this place before but he was happy he did. Loaded with endless amounts of weapons and luxury goods his ship was sitting heavy in the waves. It was time to replace gunpowder with fur and silk with gold. Mechanically with his eyes still closed he pulled his journal form his coat. With a few hasty lines he began to draw a sketch of the surroundings. The city, the temple, the square. He took a few notes as well. The day was young and he had already learned a lot. Storing away his journal he quickly marched towards his shop. Payment of customs and rent had been arranged by his quartermaster who was responsible for all the paper work. The shop was in perfect order, large amounts of firearms of all kinds were displays alongside sacks of spice and rolls of beautifully embroidered silk, jewellery, coloured chalk and many, many other goods.

Tossing his men a few coins he smiled at the way they had arranged the goods. Everything was ready for business, this was going to be a great day.

Nothing was happening back in Parfuhmerie, & if her sisters' statements on what was happening in other locations were true, there were much more interesting shenanigans to be had elsewhere. As such, Xoa'yi asked Sekka to go to the Selkie's region after hearing of a Spring Festival there, taking Luca along since he was also interested in seeing this festival. Apparently, he would have even gone alone, but he was a little concerned that the natives would question why a child was alone (he was thirteen, but he was tiny for his age). Thankfully, Xoa'yi did not look quite as demonic as, say, Ir'a or Ka'tyu, so she was certain she'd blend in well among the humans.

Spring Sacrifice Area, near the back
"Xoa'yi, I can't see anything!" Luca said, jumping while in front of Xoa'yi in a desperate attempt to see the sacrifice.

"Hmm... come up on my shoulders then, but give me your halberd," she said in her unintentionally condescending tone, "You might be too heavy with that." Nodding that he understood, Luca passed her his halberd while Xoa'yi sunk around to his level so then he could leap onto her shoulders. "Hoo, wow! You're either surprisingly heavy, or I'm just weak," Xoa'yi said once Luca was on her shoulders, momentarily buckling under his apparent weight. While he did not respond, a blush came over his cheeks. What the heck, lady? he thought to himself, a bit offended at her comment. After all, she was a member of Gesh'rigu, so she should surely be stronger than this.

Eventually, the horse & its entourage made their way to the altar, Xoa'yi thinking to herself in quiet respect to the Selkie. Oh, I think I've seen those herbs before, she observed them in particular, & when she noticed the calming effects they had on the horse, she was certain that she did know what herbs they were. Moments later, the horse was cut for its blood. An intriguing tradition, reminds me of back home, she thought, Only, this one's less gruesome & a lot more humane. Normally, Xoa'yi would have spoken out loud while noting down what was happening — this trait being shared between her sisters & herself — but she felt that Luca would not appreciate that.

She didn't know much about him, but based off of his generally cheerful demeanor that exuded a happiness best described as dangerously virulent & his halberd, he was probably hiding some terrifyingly strong anger that could burst out if he was pushed to his utter limits. She did not wish to be the one to push him to such limits, especially not in a foreign nation. Likewise, she sensed there was something special about his halberd & that losing it would be a horrible mistake, so she gripped it tightly & kept it in front of her to lessen the chance of losing it.

Soon, the ceremony was done. "I'mma come down now," Luca said before jumping off of Xoa'yi onto an empty space near her, "Now what do we do?"
"Ah, I think I've heard that the Selkies sell dyes, so I think I'll go drop by somewhere like that," she said in her usual slightly condescending tone (even her sisters weren't sure why she spoke like that), "Oh, & here's your halberd." She passed him back his halberd before slowly sliding away, slightly taking his hand while she left to go find somewhere that sold dyes. Eventually, Luca let go of her hand, partially because he was sure that she couldn't possibly lose him & because he really didn't want to hold her hand — it was strangely cold & coated in a strange dust-like material that he didn't like.

While walking behind Xoa'yi, Luca distracted himself by quietly singing some sort of serene song, his surprisingly high-pitched voice clear enough that Xoa'yi could still her him somewhat while those farther away would probably only hear a quiet sound. However, he kept himself quiet enough as to not attract too much attention, although he clearly had talent in singing. While his skill was clearly not Broadway-tier, it was noticeably better than most normal folk — probably enough to be a known in singing through a theater group or school chorus. Eventually they would find either a store for dyes or a stall that sold them, but they would find an enterprise specializing in & selling dyes.

"Hellooo there," greeted Xoa'yi towards whoever owned the business, trying to suppress her unintentionally condescending tone as much as possible with success, "I've heard the Selkies have some wonderful dyes for sale?" Meanwhile, Luca was waiting a bit farther away from the shop/stall, his halberd in his hand. To the storekeeper, they'd probably feel that the two were related somehow, maybe not by family, but more likely by a friendship or acquaintance with one another. That still wouldn't prohibit asking if Luca was Xoa'yi's son though — it didn't seem too unreasonable.

"This is...A bit out of the way it seems? A short cut is it?"

With Noah.
Liliane giggled, not offended in the least.
"Indeed I did, as a little girl.", she said with a smile, "I was tasked to climb up into the rigging watch out for other ships and larger sea animals. Back in the day, he and his companions still had their little Seol, a boat of... call it fifteen metres. Not large, in any case. We went out to sea, got our fish and went home again - no need to take on bigger fish."
She let a beat pass as they went further through the festival grounds.
"When he got his Wave Horse, he had still had me occupy the rigging, but since I was bigger by then, he had me work in the kitchen and for entertainment.", she said and smiled slightly, "I can sing quite well and nothing lulls sailors better to sleep then a sweet song of home. It was around that time, that I also learned how to handle horse and rifle."

Gabe and Finnegan, away from the Festival.
"Yes.", the man said, "A shortcut."
The Captain led her further into a maze of little alleyways, dark corners, which were mostly unoccupied. The City of Leuda, and the Merchant Guild for that matter, tried to keep the city clean and free of crime, but they did not manage it with all corners. Especially the more remote back alleys harboured not only shade, but also shady individuals, back entrances into houses and into small storerooms. Children of the city knew those like the backs of the own hand... and they would know, that Finnegan would not lead Gabe to the harbour.
However, most children were elsewhere, seeing the sights and listening to the sounds of the Festival.
And then, a man burst out of a door behind them, raising a club and hitting Gabe square over the head with it, trying to knock her unconscious, Finnegan having a small, condescending smile on his lips.
It was clear, what was happening: Gabe had walked into a trap.

Selkie, too, held to sacred hospitality, but the sacred laws, rules and rituals associated with that also included provisions for what the guest had to keep in mind - from not offering food and drink to the host, one of the gravest insults, to disarming oneself before entering, although it was still assumed, that the guest had a small dagger hidden somewhere, unless he declared himself to be unarmed, in which case he made the gravest insult.
In any case, the Guild Guards returned the respectful nods of Sir Marlon with respectful bows of their heads, acknowledging him not only as a fellow warrior, but also as an older warrior, something, which one did not see too often. They did wear smiles, though, at the surprise of the two Ruvians.
"You are not used to female warrior-dom.", their guide said with a smile, "Don't worry. Most foreigners aren't. Makes for a pretty surprise, when their mercenaries ordered in Redruth are three-quarters female and still kick the enemy in the rear end!"
He laughed at the last one.

Shortly after their opening of a stall, the fist customers arrived, merchants interested in the quality of the wares and whether or not they were able to buy and sell it elsewhere on a constant basis, tailors interested in the silks, people interested in the weapons - but most remarkable amongst them was a woman, who was decidedly not a Selkie, at least not at first glance.
She was middle aged, olive skinned. In her younger days, she surely had been a beautiful woman, but her face with the high cheek bones was marred by a scar running down the right side of her face, her eyes, once sparkling sapphires, were cold and hard. Accompanied by a bodyguard, a man in lamellar armour with a fearsomely tall axe and a girl with a pretty face in a cloak with a veil drawn over her head, she looked like a businesswoman, and indeed, she was.
Appraising the goods of the stall in front of her, she ran her hand along the silk, looked the weapons up and down (nodding in approval at several points) and then turned to Robert, stating in a voice speaking clear, but with an accent: "Good morning. I am interested in the weapons you are selling. Do you think, that we can talk somewhere with less audience?"

Xoa'yi did not raise many eyebrows, but the boy with the helberd did - it was a rather big and heavy looking weapon for a child, who, in Selkie Schooling Terms, was a between a Cub and a Scribe, between six and ten Springs of age, to most of them. That their estimate of his age was incorrect did not matter for most, as they passed them and were passed.
Most of them were not a girl in a quite colourful woolen dress, which looked actually quite hot, unsuited for the weather. Centrepiece was a long coat, going down to the ankles and trimmed with fur, a hood with what looked like rabbit ears of wool folded back. Long, thick boots covered her feet, together with fur trim, gloved not on her hands, but on her belt, which also carried a furrier's knife and a few small pouches.
If one had to describe the face of the eleven Springs old girl in one word, though, that word would be adorable. Her skin was white to the point of snow-white being an appropriate description, with a small button-nose, shining blue eyes and short, gold-blonde hair framing it, watching the boy from a corner. Her smile was the adorable part, reminding people of a small cat or rabbit on regular intervals.
She smiled as he waited a bit behind his... mother, she was tempted to say, maybe big sister... yes, definately big sister, as she talked to a dye merchant.

Finding a dye merchant was not the complicated part, though, they were in front of the Counting House's Western Side.
The complicated part was the merchant as the merchant was nowhere to be found, having left his son in charge, a lad of sixteen with red hair and a pretty smile, which he send towards every pretty girl he saw. Xao'yi broke him out of that reverie, causing him to straighten up and nod at her question.
"Indeed we do produce, use and sell quite the high quality dyes for cloth, leather, wool, you name it, we have colours to colour it with.", he said and smiled slightly as he reached below the counter and got out a small sample of sepia brown colour flakes in a small bowl, putting it onto the counter, while he explained: "My Dad and I represent a small group of dye-makers in Shella, that's a whole lot of a way to the south. We make, and I know, that I am biased, the best dyes in the Lands of the Selkie, for example this sepia brown, made from an octopus... you don't want to know the specifics." He grinned at the last part, indicating to the flakes in a deep, rich reddish brown colour. "It can be used to colour clothing and to write with, as well as a whole lot of other applications."
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.
My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.
