The Koningsdam Kaisers, lead by the twin-towers of Erwin and Martijn Koning, defeated the Los Santos Stars today at the Kaiserdome Arena in Nordierk-Wartier, Oostfalea. The Kaisers, coached by Rudy Tomjonavich, cruised past the Los Santos Stars in the opening game of the 1st ABA season. The Kaisers front-court anchored by the defensive stoppers Erwin Koning at Center, and B.J. Oestertag with J.J. Konijenbeld at the forward positions, totalled for 7 blocked shots and 4 steals. This prompted the Stars headcoach, Carl Lamar, to rely more on outside shooting, at an above average 38%. The Kaisers offense consisted mostly of slow-paced, methodical offense, relying on the danger of point guards de Klerk and Canizales to get effective post positions for the frontcourt.
With effective shot-blocking in the paint from the Kaisers, the Stars moved their offence to the perimeter. The Stars simply lacked low-post presence, and even the 7' tall, 269 lb Roberto Bautista could not face up against the length of Koning and Oestertag; Bautista was reduced to a measly 3-of-14 shooting. On the perimeter, Jamal did as good as he could, with the 6'10'' Martijn Koning locking him down for the whole game. In the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter, Martijn Koning suffered a twisted wrist when Bautista landed on him. Kaisers medical staff say he will be able to play for next week's game.
This was simply a case of great defence. The Koningsdam Kaisers put on a defensive show unmatched in other Week One matches. The Los Santos Stars are a good team, but the long reach of the Kaisers shut down any chance of them winning the season opener. In the post-game interview, Coach Tomjonavich said that the whole Kaisers team deserved an ovation, including the bench, that outscored the Stars bench by 14 points.

LA SANTOS III, Miguelito (SG): 34 pts, 5 rebs, 4 ast, 3 tov, 15/31 fg | ANG, Zhou Lin (C): 27pts, 9 rebs, 3 ast, 4 blk, 12/17 fg, 1/2 ft |
SAN MIGUEL, Eduardo (C): 25 pts, 8 rebs, 1 ast, 2 blk, 12/16 fg, 1/5 ft | ROBERTSSON, Hans-Kendrick (SG): 17 pts, 3 rebs, 4 ast, 5/7 fg, 7/7 ft |
SRIJNEMAKER-MANJERES, Aleks.(PG): 8 pts, 2 rebs, 11 ast, 1 stl, 4 tov, 4/9 fg | ANDREWS, Matthias (SF): 12 pts, 4 rebs, 5 ast, 3 stl, 5/8 fg |
These two teams ran small-ball lineups; four small perimeter players with one supporting big man. The lack of blocked shots in this game is evidence to the lack of rim protection these two teams possess. Coach Xuan Zhao Ang put the responsibility of scoring on the 18 year-old la Santos III, son of President la Santos II. Although he did put up the most points, Coach Xuan said that the 18 year-old had a problem of shot selection. One instance was when the 6'6'' guard went up against the 7'2'' Ang Zhou Lin, twice he tried and twice he was blocked. The 18 year-old is one of the hottest contenders for the MVP award, however he could use with more experience on the court.
Throughout the game, centres Eduardo San Miguel and Ang Zhou Lin went head-to-head in the vicinity of the post. San Miguel, with his weight, muscled into the lane on many occasions, overpowering the Requiem Raiders' frontcourt. Ang, with his array of hook shots and fadeaways, managed 27 points, despite the defensive effort of San Miguel.
Coach Alexander Ivanovich of the Raiders is happy with the players he was given, and said that the defeat would be a lesson to the young rookies. The match was held at the Ring of Requiem Stadium in Nestiland, as Gatayan City was deemed unsafe by ABA officials.

BENNINGTON Jr., Juan (PG): 20 pts, 5 rebs, 4 ast, 2 stl, 9/14 fg | KARZEBEGOVIC, Andre (C): 26 pts, 6 rebs, 3 ast, 3 tov, 11/26 fg |
BALASCO-BAILON Jr., Kennedy (SG): 19 pts, 3 rebs, 1 ast, 2 tov, 6/10 fg, 2/3 ft | ROMEIJNSEN, Bruce (SG): 14 pts, 6 rebs, 1 ast, 1 stl, 5/7 fg |
BALCAZAR-BANERES, Victor (SF): 12 pts, 6 rebs, 5 ast, 1 blk, 4/5 fg, 2/2 ft | VIZACAYA, Aiden Louiz (PF): 10 pts, 9 rebs, 4 ast, 2/8 fg, 6/21 ft |
Coach Ernesto Lawrence III said before the match that the Skyforce team will have to own the perimeter if they would have any chance of beating Aurora City. Andre Karzebegovic, the 6'11'' center, dominated the floor from almost every angle, and shot well from behind the arc the entire game. Coach Lawrence said that he would need to find a solution to Karzebegovic's shooting spree. In the first 2 minutes of the third quarter, Aiden Vizacaya was intentionally fouled numerous times, slowing down the pace of the game and putting Karzebegovic off his game.
Juan Bennington Jr. proved to be a threat from range as well. Him and Balasco-Bailon Jr. drove the Skyforce to a 16-3 run in the last 8 minutes of the game. The shorter lineup of the Skyforce would be compensated by their pace and precision on the offensive end. Aurora City was outmoded, and even the near-perfect shooting of Bruce Romeijnsen from beyond the arc could not save the Typhoon from a morale-crushing defeat at home.
Coach Bagyo Boyvya said that the Skyforce played them well and that he would have to dedicate time to Vizacaya's shooting. Aurora City Police reported assaults in the vicinity of Breeze Arena following Aurora City's loss.

PAULETEVIC, Miroslav (C): 13 pts, 14 rebs, 2 ast, 6 blks, 4/16 fg, 4/6 ft | RASKE-NAVARRO, Wessel (C): 19pts, 4 rebs, 2 ast, 1 tov, 8/15 fg, 3/6 ft |
ARMENDAREZ, Ernis (SG): 18 pts, 4 rebs, 3 ast, 1 tov, 6/10 fg, 6/6 ft | ANDERSSEN, Jan (C/PF): 9 pts, 12 rebs, 9 ast, 1 blk, 3/8 fg, 3/5 ft |
BARBERO, Henry (SF): 14 pts, 6 rebs, 2 ast, 2 stl, 6/10 fg, 1/2 ft | CYLICH, Brandon (SG): 16 pts, 4 rebs, 5 ast, 7/9 fg |
Miroslav Pauletevic, the Balkan Beast, as coach Sigurd Henrikssen of the Conquistadors called him, had six blocks on the opening night. His presence on the low post had single-handedly changed the mechanics of the Conquistadors offense. This, and the consistant effort of Ernis Armendarez and Henry Barbero, pressured and broke the Conquistadors in the closing minutes of the game. In the final period of the game, the Conquistadors threw up 6 airballs, and 4 turnovers.
However, the Conquistadors possess the low post hook shots of the 6'11'' Wessel Raske-Navarro, and the passing of his big-man pairing, Jan Anderssen. Navarro and Anderssen displayed great chemistry, Anderssen managing to deliver pinpoint passes akin to a quarterback from outside the arc to a waiting Raske-Navarro. This however would not be enough to earn victory in the Air Alexis Arena in downtown Ciudad de Alexis.
Coach Henrikssen would be smart to consider improving on the chemistry of Jan Anderssen and Wessel Raske-Navarro.
