The George Jones Estate
State of Deseret
Tuesday, April 6, 2032
12:30 pm

Two hundred two years ago, on April 6th, the LDS Church was founded. Today, on the anniversary of the LDS Church, LDS President George Jones and State of Deseret President Willand Hall will host their Andromedan counterparts, Andromeda LDS President David Newton and Andromeda Conservative Party Leader Joe Rutherford. The meeting will occur at the Jones estate outside of Salt Lake City.

The Jones Estate is one of the most prominent estates in Deseret. A grand mansion sits in the middle of several acres of well-manicured green pasture. The back of the house faces a man-made lake. The estate is guarded by members of the Deseret Police Force.

In the State of Deseret, there are few boundaries between the LDS Church and Civil Authorities. George Jones, the Leader of the LDS Church, became part of the LDS High Council when he was Vice President of Deseret. He became President of the Church less than a year after he ended his second term as President of Deseret. Nearly all of the elected officials in the State of Deseret are members of the LDS Church as well as members of the Deseret Conservative Party.

George Jones, the head of the Church, sits at the head of a large dining table. Next to him, to his right is Willard Hall, the President of Deseret. Hall also happens to be a member of the LDS High Council. Both Jones and Hall also happen to be major stockholders in the Deseret Jello Consortium, the largest producer of gelatin products in their region. Sitting to Jones’ left is Joe Rutherford, the highest ranking LDS member in Andromedan government. Next to Rutherford is David Newton, the leader of the Andromeda LDS Church. Once the four finish a light lunch, Newton begins the discussion.

“President Jones, President Hall, the reason we are here is because we are close to having a second country governed by the LDS Church. We are very close and the tide is turning our way. We just need a little assistance.”

George Jones is skeptical. Willard Hall listens.

“A little assistance.”

“What are you asking,” Hall asks.

Image
Willard Hall is the current President of the State of Deseret.

“We just need a little more funding than we had two years ago.”

“But didn’t your party outspend your opponents two years ago?”

George Jones demonstrates that he has examined the particulars of the situation.

“We had to. The Social Democrats have government resources to tap into. We need to cultivate similar resources in order to counter this.”

“And, once we win, the Social Democrats won’t be able to counter us.”

Joe Rutherford makes a good point.

“So,” Hall interjects. “You want open funding from a foreign government in order to gain power?”

“Not exactly,” Rutherford says.

“We want the Deseret Jello Consortium to help fund our campaign.”

George Jones sits back and considers the situation.

“What do we get out of this?”

“President Jones, the LDS Church will be able to spread throughout the Allied States. Currently, we only run the State Government in St. Paul. If we were to gain the Presidency of the Allied States, the tide would turn in such a way that the LDS Church would spread throughout the Allied States. We would become the Island version of Deseret.”

“We would have a Mormon Conservative government in the Andromeda Islands.”

“We just need a little push to make the first domino fall.”

George Jones raises his hand.

“Didn’t your country have a Mormon as Vice President?”

“Glen Becker, wasn’t it?”

“It was a long time ago, and he wasn’t influential.”

“Well do it!”

Newton and Rutherford turn to Hall.

“Not only will we do it, but we’ll put church resources toward your campaign.”

George Jones turns to Hall. He is surprised.

“We need to gain a foothold outside of the State of Deseret. In order to spread our message in the Andromeda Islands, we first need to win the Andromedan Presidency.”

George Jones smiles. Newton and Rutherford know that they have his blessing.

“Mr. Rutherford, as President of the Andromeda Islands, you will be the shining example of a Mormon man. Your mere presence in that office will influence people to turn to the Truth. But in order to make that happen, we need to help you become the President of the Allied States.”

“Exactly.” David Newton is happy.

“We’ll send missionaries to the Andromeda Islands, but we’ll have them campaigning for Joe Rutherford and the Conservatives.”

“And, we’ll make sure your campaign receives ample contributions from our subsidiaries in the Andromeda Islands.”

“A full court press.”

“Exactly.”

Willard Hall and George Jones stand up. Hall talks to Newton, who’s clearly in charge.

“I trust you and your colleagues are progressing with your plans in your country.”

“We are, President Hall.”

Jones and Hall shake hands with Newton and Rutherford.

“Best of luck to you.”

Newton looks over at Rutherford as he shakes Jones’ hand.

“God be with you, President Jones.”

“And also with you, Mr. Rutherford.”

Andromeda Conservative Media
Andromeda City, Andromeda State
Thursday, April 8, 2032
11:25 am

Two years ago, a majority of the controlling stock at Andromeda Conservative Media was purchased by a front company controlled by the Emerald News Network, a foreign entity controlled by a foreign government. The current CEO of Andromeda Conservative Media was essentially appointed by his grandfather, the CEO of the Emerald News Network.

Conrad Green III became a citizen of the Allied States just days before becoming the CEO of Andromeda Conservative Media. When his grandfather was alive, Rad Green was merely a placeholder, sitting at the top of an organization that continued as if nothing had happened. Since his grandfather died, Rad Green has attempted to make Andromeda Conservative Media a more credible, less partisan news organization.

Green arrives at ACM Headquarters this morning met by his Chief of Staff. They walk quickly from the parking garage to his office.

“Mr. Green, the stock has been volatile this morning. If we don’t act now, we may lose control of Andromeda Conservative Media.”

“Won’t our stock broker take care of this?”

“He may not be able to. We’ve been able to stay in control because none of the other stockholders wanted new leadership, but there are new players in the game. Players we don’t know. Oh, another thing. Chad Rourke is in the Conference Room.”

Green stops.

“I thought I told Security that Chad Rourke wasn’t welcome here anymore.”

Image
Conrad Green III started the day as the CEO of Andromeda Conservative Media.

“He’s here with Newton and Rutherford.”

Green rolls their eyes and sighs.

“Not to worry. We may have to put Rourke back in some capacity, but our mission won’t change.”

Green and his Chief of Staff walk straight into the Board Room. Joe Rutherford sits at the far end of the board room. Dave Newton and Chad Rourke sit at either side of Rutherford. Once Green sees Rourke, he immediately turns to his Chief of Staff.

“Call Security. Mr. Rourke doesn’t belong here.”

The Chief of Staff steps out.

“Assemblyman Rutherford, you and Assemblyman Newton are always welcome here, of course, but Mr. Rourke is no longer allowed on the premises.”

“Relax, Rad.”

Dave Newton, Joe Rutherford and Chad Rourke sit, staring at Rad Green.

“I think you know why we’re here, Mr. Green.”

“While I welcome your visits, Assemblyman Rutherford, I have no idea.”

“You’re no longer in charge of Andromeda Conservative Media.”

Chad Rourke, who was quiet until now, has a satisfied look on his face.

Image
Chad Rourke ended the day as the CEO of Andromeda Conservative Media.

“You’ll find out who’s in charge when you’re out on the street.”

Security officers walk in.

“Security, escort Mr. Rourke out.”

The Security Guards don’t budge. David Newton pulls out a note card and reads from it.

“Mr. Green, as of 9:41 am this morning, you and your Emerald group lost majority control of controlling stock.”

Newton puts the note card back in his pocket.

“Mr. Green, it’s time to make Andromeda Conservative Media Great Again!”

“Security!”

The Security officers turn to Mr. Rourke.

“Mr. Green needs to be escorted off of the property by noon today.”

“Mr. Green. You need to clear out your office. You have...”

The Guards look to Rourke. Rourke nods his head in approval.

“30 minutes.”

Chad Rourke stands up, walk over to Rad Green and stares down at him.

“Rad Green, YOU’RE FIRED!”

Andromeda Conservative Media
Andromeda City, Andromeda State
Saturday, April 10, 2032
10:00 am

During the past 48 hours, several Conservative Assembly members and Conservative Party activists have moved back into the Andromeda Conservative Media Building. For most of its history, ACM has worked hand-in-hand with the Conservative Party. Under Rad Green, there was an effort to make ACM into a more credible news service. That effort was brought to a halt when Green was fired two days ago.

Chad Rourke, who was fired by Rad Green from ACM, now serves as CEO. He hosts a small number of key Conservative Leaders, led by Joe Rutherford and David Newton, in the ACM board room. A number of maps are spread across the boardroom table.

“As you can see, it isn’t really about getting more votes, it’s about winning enough seats. We solidify our majorities in Conservative states by redrawing seats. We also peel off seats in the larger states. We won’t win Joppa, Portsmouth and Andromeda City, but we can win enough seats to help us win an outright majority.”

Joe Rutherford nods his head.

“Our redistricting efforts are working then?”

“They certainly are, Mr. Rutherford. And being in the minority, we also have a decided advantage.”

“Which is?”

“The Social Democrats have to govern. They are constrained by their record. They can’t stay as focused on redistricting as we have. The Social Democrats also don’t have anything like Andromeda Conservative Media in their back pocket.”

“But we don’t tell them that.”

There are laughs in the room.

“We continue to emphasize that the Andromeda News Network is biased and liberal. We offer ourselves as an alternative for the “liberal media.” We continue repeating this line until enough people think it’s true.

“What about Andromeda City. We could actually win here.”

“We’ve got the fire power to make it possible if Holstein runs. He runs the biggest church in Andromeda City and people like him.”

“Isn’t he running against Rev. Bryce.”

“Mr. J. Thomas Bryce has been known to be abrasive. He barely won against Harry O’Shaughnessey two years ago. Holstein is different. If he runs as the face and smiles pretty for the cameras, he can help us get a majority in Andromeda City. That would be a coup.”

“What about the west?”

“There are three states that we should ignore. The Western Islands and Koni are just too far away. Those four seats aren’t really worth the trouble. And Angeles City... There may be a few Conservatives to run out there, but it’s perhaps the most Social Democratic state in the Allied States. We let the Social Democrats spin their wheels and run up the score there. We focus on Nassau, Silla and Busan.”

“Many of the Conservative states will take care of themselves. Stephanie Brandt is done in Beta City. Athena Coleman is helping us secure more substantial majorities in Palermo. Syracuse...”

There are a few groans about Syracuse.

“What about Henry Godwin?”

“We’ll have to live with Godwin for the time being. He’s in a safe seat.”

Henry Godwin, the son of the only Conservative to serve as President of the Allied States, has had a reputation for crossing the aisle and working with Social Democrats. The ranking member of the Navy Committee, he is good friends with current Navy Minister Anna Kaewkhonkaen.

As the group looks at a map of Syracuse State, Chad Rourke’s chief of staff barges in.

“Mr. Rourke, turn on ANN. Something has happened.”

Rourke turns on a large television and turns to Andromeda News Network coverage of an incident in Joppa.

Andromeda News Network
BREAKING NEWS
Five Points Neighborhood
Joppa, Joppa State
Saturday, April 10, 2032
Noon

Rose Jackson, the Andromeda News Network’s chief Joppa correspondent, stands outside of a restaurant in Andromeda City’s Five Points Neighborhood. Police officers walk in front of the restaurant. Yellow security tape surrounds the crime scene.

Image
Rose Jackson reports from Geppetto’s in Joppa.

“Less than an 90 minutes, Joppa State Governor Joe Napoli was sitting here, just outside of Geppetto’s Italian Eatery, an establishment run by his cousin.

Image
Joe Napoli, Governor of Joppa State.

At around 10:40, Governor Napoli’s early lunch abruptly ended. Witnesses heard gunshots from the street. Witnesses saw two men riding by on a motorcycle at the time the shots were fired.”

Cut to footage of witnesses.

“We were walking by. We said hello to Governor Napoli, like we did every Saturday morning. All of a sudden, we heard shots coming from the street. I got my girl down to the ground. When we got up, we saw that Governor Napoli was shot.”

Cut to footage of of Paul Kelly, the weekend manager of Geppetto’s.

“Uncle Joe and my father founded this restaurant. Uncle Joe came here every Saturday morning and talked about what went on at City Hall. He came here to get away from all that, and now, a bunch of savages on motorbikes just cut him down.”

Image
Governor Napoli was shot in cold blood this morning.

Cut to footage of a third witness.

“One of the men on the motorcycle was the shooter. They was both wearing ski masks, but they was blacks. What kind of coward wears a ski mask in Joppa?”

Cut to Rose Jackson.

“Governor Napoli was taken to University Hospital less than an hour ago. Meanwhile, Joppa Police have apprehended two men dressed in black on a motorcycle about 35 minutes ago at the Studios of Criminal Records.”

Image
Canaan Jackson is the CEO of Criminal Records.

Cut to footage of police officers dragging people out of the Criminal Records Studios.

“Police are uncertain as to whether these are the same men who shot the Governor. One thing is for certain, the same model of motorcycle used in the shooting was found behind the Criminal Records Studio.”

Cut to Joppa Police Headquarters. There is footage of Police Officers forcing the two men into custody. The men struggle to break free from the officers.

“Get the fuck off me. I ain’t done nuthin’. Motherfucker, I ain’t done nuthin’.”

“Urban Guerrillas, Bitch! Joe Napoli can eat a d...”

Rose Jackson voices over the footage.

“Joppa Police also arrested Canaan Jackson, the CEO of Criminal Records. Canaan Jackson is also the lead rapper of ‘The Riders.’ He was brought into custody earlier this year as a result of a riot that occurred during the most recent New Year Celebration.”

Cut to Joppa Police Headquarters. Canaan Jackson is escorted into police custody by two officers. He appears calm and has a smile on his face. A reporter approaches Canaan Jackson.

“So, did you shoot the Governor?”

“Naw. I didn’t shoot nobody, but after the way he’s treated us, I wish I did.”

“Don’t you have anything to say to the people who loved Governor Napoli?”

“The chicken’s come home to roost. The chicken’s come home to roost. How’s that?”

As the camera cuts to Rose Jackson, she is listening to a message over an earphone.

“This just in! We’ve just heard from University Hospital. Governor Napoli is dead.”

The Sugar House Hotel
Near St. Paul State Airport
St. Paul, State Paul State
Saturday, April 10, 2032
11:50 pm

A second floor room in a shabby hotel is now occupied by a woman who showed up a few hours ago. The grossly overweight woman showed up disheveled in ill-fitting clothes. She didn’t have any identification, didn’t bring any luggage, paid cash and registered under the name of Becky Bittner. Since she arrived, she ordered two pizzas and a few two-liter bottles of soda pop delivered from a local pizzeria.

Image
The Sugar House Hotel near the St. Paul Airport.

Rebecca Bittner Newton has recently escaped from a mental institution. She had been an unwilling resident there for more than a year. Before her stay at the institution, she had been confined to the Newton home since making an unfortunate outburst during a Sunday service in 2020.

Bittner sits in the small hotel room on a bed next to a half eaten pizza and a half-finished two-liter of soda pop. The other pizza box is empty and sitting in front of a television that is set on the Andromeda News Network. There is a tribute to Joe Napoli on the television.

Suddenly, the front door opens. Two men wearing trench coats walk in.

“Mrs. Newton?”

Rebecca Newton turns toward the man. His partner pulls out a potato from his coat pocket and points it at Bittner. Bullets fly from the potato, hitting Bittner in the side. Bittner fell to the floor. The shooter walks over and shoots her two more times.

“What now,” the shooter asks.

“We follow instructions.”

“But, how will be move...?”

Image
Rebecca Bittner Newton (1984-2032)

“Son, this is Sugar House. We can shut this place down at any time. Flash a badge and they’ll do just about anything to make sure they stay open.”

“Including helping us move Shamu here?”

“Watch and learn, son.”

After moving Mrs. Newton’s corpse into an unmarked police car, the Head detective drives to a road close to the mental institution.

“I wonder how she got out.”

“What’s that?”

“How did she manage to escape?”

“They let her escape.”

“What?”

“They let Mrs. Newton here escape. They knew she would show up at Sugar House, because it’s one of the few places in St. Paul where people go who want to become anonymous. Why did you think we were ordered to kill first?”

“Who would set up something like that?”

The lead detective stays silent for a few seconds before answering.

“We don’t ask questions. We follow orders.”

The detective stops the car.

“Leave her here. We’ll come back and get her in a moment.”

Mrs. Newton’s body is pushed out of the car. The police officers drive away only to return in separate cars. The officers places Mrs. Newton’s body in the passenger seat. They drive to a cliff overlooking a beach. The shooter gets out of the car. The superior officer pours gasoline on the car.

“Wait a minute. How will we explain Mrs. Newton being in the passenger seat?”

“The impact of the fall? The effects of the burning? Truly, nobody investigating the crime scene will give a fuck.”

The shooter gets in the car, starts the car and places it in drive. He places a heavy rock on the accelerator and backs away from the car. Meanwhile, the superior officer throws a burning cloth into the car, setting off a gasoline fire. The two officer watch as the burning car drives off of the cliff and crashes onto the rocks. The superior officer pulls out a cell phone and calls another pair of officers.

“This is the Sergeant. I’ll radio you to the mental institution in about a minute. We’ll meet on the beach. Follow my lead.”

The superior officer walks to the car. The shooter follows.

“We’ll wait for them. Hopefully, the hard part is done.”

The Office of the Secretary-General
World Assembly Headquarters
World Assembly Territory
Monday, May 17, 2032
9:45 am

In many ways, the office of the World Assembly Secretary-General is cavernous. At one end of the room is a window overlooking the metropolitan area, which includes the Old Emerald City, the former capital of the Emerald Republic. At the other end is the Secretary-General’s Desk. Next to his office is his living quarters as well as a conference room.

Image
World Assembly Headquarters

The Secretary-General, Mike Knox, isn’t at his desk this morning. Instead, he is sitting on a mat in front of his desk, wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Sitting next to him is an Indian woman, who’s going through the same paces as he is.

Mike Knox was the first Andromedan President to visit World Assembly Territory. Soon after his visit, Knox was the first Andromedan President to be shot while in office. Throughout the remainder of his Presidency, his term as Andromedan Ambassador to the World Assembly and his time as a World Assembly official, Knox suffered from injuries resulting from that day ten years ago.

Next to him is Madame Shaheeda, one of the most successful business women in World Assembly Territory. Her parents were career diplomats. She owns a number of dance studios in World Assembly Territory and the Emerald Republic. She has also been rumored to be Mike Knox’s lover.

Mike Knox and Madame Shaheeda finish going through their paces. She puts her hand up his shirt and feels the scar where he was shot.

“Tell me again. How did this happen?”

“You know the story.”

“I’d like to hear it again.”

“I was President of my country, the Andromeda Islands. The Assembly there was debating the issue of gay marriage in my country. The press was asking me my position. I was conflicted about the idea. More importantly, I didn’t want any part of that discussion, so we arranged a visit here, to the World Assembly.”

Image
Mike Knox has been Secretary-General since January 1st.

“Louis Sinclair, our Minister of Foreign Affairs, convinced me that the best thing to do was to face the issue. I personally don’t care what people do behind closed doors, and I said so before our country’s Assembly. That’s when it happened.”

“When you got shot?”

“If Leonard Lawrence hadn’t tackled the shooter, I would be dead right now. Gay marriage was a huge issue in our country ten years ago. I was confined to a wheelchair for months.”

“What happened to the shooter?”

“He was expelled from the Assembly. He’s in prison now.”

“And Leonard Lawrence?”

“He’s the current Vice President of the Andromeda Islands.”

“And how did you get here?”

“The new President, Sarah Vale, asked me to represent the Andromeda Islands in the World Assembly. I’ve been here ever since.”

Knox turns to Madame Shaheeda.

“So, why are you here?”

Image
Madame Shaheeda has been helping the Secretary-General with his injuries.

“I came here with my parents. My father was part of the my country’s diplomatic mission...”

“No. Why are you here, in this office, right now?”

“I’m an opportunist, Mr. Secretary-General. You’re a powerful man, and my connection to you is good for business.”

Knox stares at Madame Shaheeda.

“You want to know the real reason? It’s because we are the same kind of people.”

“What do you mean?”

“I got to where I am because I do just as well here in World Assembly Headquarters as I do on the street. Most of these diplomats and bureaucrats can’t do that. They wouldn’t last ten minutes outside of the Diplomatic Circle. They wouldn’t dare go to Abu-Salih.”

“So, I’m the street guy.”

“That’s the thing. Most people can’t be both. I can and you can. Most people can’t.”

Madame Shaheeda hops up and puts on her sweats. Knox struggles to get up.

“You know, people talk.”

“I’m helping you with your physical therapy.”

“This is true. Anything beyond that...”

“Is speculation. I’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Secretary-General.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Miss Shaheeda.”

The World Assembly Security Council
World Assembly Headquarters
Thursday, May 20, 2032
1:00 pm

The 21 members of the World Assembly Security Council make decisions that affect the entire World. Such decisions require a general consensus among the Security Council. 14 of the 21 members must agree on any measure before it becomes effective. If the Security Council fails to agree on a measure, then the measure dies.

Image
The World Assembly Security Council Chamber.

The General Assembly’s measures must also pass the Security Council in order to become policy. A measure can be stopped by eight people in the Security Council. With few measures passing both bodies, the Secretariat has latitude to act as it sees fit.

Today, the Security Council is discussing the situation in Abu-Salih. The General Assembly has passed a measure that will ban guns from being imported into the Abu Continent. The Security Council spent the morning listening to supporters of the measure. This afternoon, opponents of the measure will speak.

Sitting on one side of the rounded table is Valerie Page, the World Assembly Ambassador from San Angeles. Her country is perhaps the most liberal represented on the Council. She plans to vote for the measure, which will likely fall short of the 14 votes needed to pass.

Image
Valerie Page represents San Angeles in the World Assembly.

Sitting at the other end is the newest member of the Security Council. Bernard Marx is the World Assembly Ambassador from Cuba. He just assumed his seat on Monday. Marx has yet to vote on a measure. Page talked to Marx briefly at a reception on Monday night, but couldn’t figure out what kind of person he was. Marx has kept his cards close to his chest.

Image
Bernard Marx of Cuba is the newest member of the Security Council.

As the gun company representative states his case against the measure, Allen Richmond draws doodles on a piece of paper. Richmond is the President of the World Assembly Security Council. He and at least seven other members of the World Assembly Security Council will likely vote against the measure. The question Valerie Page asks herself: Is Bernard Marx one of the eight?

Image
Allen Richmond of Hippostania, the President of the Security Council, is arguably the #2 man in the World Assembly.

“...it is actually IN the interest of the Abu Continent that armaments trade continue uninterrupted. The best defense against bad guys with guns is good guys with guns. Thank you.”

“Thank you, Mr. Hauser.”

Ambassador Richmond appears confident that the measure will fail.

“The question before the council is General Assembly House of Delegates measure 2032-05-05-05. The Secretary will call the roll.”

Image
Ambassador Gina Castiglione of the Andromeda Islands is currently the Secretary of the Security Council.

After most of the roll call, the count is 12 in favor and seven opposed. The remaining votes belong to Cuban Ambassador Bernard Marx and Andromedan Ambassador Gina Castiglione. Gina C, a former Vice President of the Allied States, and current Secretary of the Security Council, finishes the roll.

“Ambassador Marx?”

“Yes.”

Page is surprised. It appears that the measure will pass.

“Finally, Ambassador Castiglione...No!”

Several of the Security Council members are surprised. The Andromedan Ambassador voted in favor of the previous two measures involving armaments trade and the Abu Continent.

“The motion fails. The Security Council will meet again on Monday at 2 pm. Meeting is adjourned.”

Marx and Page walk toward each other.

“Val, what just happened?”

“I was going to ask you the same thing, Ambassador Marx.”

“I believe in self-defense, but there’s ISIS. They aren’t using those arms for self-defense. But what just happened with the Secretary, it makes no sense.”

Marx and Page look at Richmond and Castiglione. As they walk out of the room, Richmond places his hand on Castiglione’s back.

“It seems Ambassador Castiglione blows with the wind.”

“It certainly does, Mr. Marx.”

Catherine Gratwick’s Estate
World Assembly Territory
Sunday, May 23, 2032
8:00 pm

The Estate of Catherine Gratwick is the largest private home in World Assembly Territory. The rest of World Assembly Territory sits on the other side of the river.

Catherine Gratwick was the long-standing leader of the World Assembly. She led the World Assembly since its founding in the 1990s. Gratwick had been independently wealthy before becoming Secretary-General. She is now perhaps the richest woman in the NS Universe.

Image
The Gratwick Estate is owned by former WA Secretary-General Catherine Gratwick.

Gratwick’s estate reflects her wealth. The lawns and gardens are perfectly manicured. Since retiring as Secretary-General, Gratwick has spent much more time at the Estate.

Valerie Page visits Gratwick, who she sees as a mentor. They walk around a lake behind her estate. Gratwick appears much older than she did when she was Secretary-General. She and Page walk slowly around the lake. Gratwick stops at a rose bush near the lake.

“Valerie. How is Knox doing?”

“Mr. Knox is managing things fine, Mother Gratwick.”

“He’s taking advantage of how the World Assembly works?”

“So far. He appears to be a blunt instrument, but he has a gentle touch. Things just seem to fall his way.”

“The invisible hand. Knox is working out better than I thought.”

Gratwick examines a flower on the rose bush.

“And the Security Council?”

“We came so close, Mother Gratwick. We were so close to keeping guns from going to ISIS, but we fell short by one vote.”

“That’s how it’s supposed to work.”

“I know, but it would be nice if we had a resolution that barred weapons from outside of the Abu Continent. We don’t want to arm the extremists.”

“Miriam is making sure that the ISIS fighters can’t get weapons from overseas.”

Miriam Aaronsohn, the Head of the World Assembly Peacekeeping Forces on the Abu Continent, also advises the Abu Government.

“Anyway, I didn’t bring you here to talk about policy. It’s time, Valerie.”

“Time for what, Mother Gratwick.”

“It’s time for me to go.”

“But, Mother Gratwick...”

“The World Assembly no longer needs me, and the Gratwick Trust will be in good hands.”

Valerie Page was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Gratwick Trust, a foundation that funds development projects in developing countries.

“I think that between you and Knox, things will run well.”

“But, Mother Gratwick, the balance is delicate.”

“There’s nothing we can do. We’ve had a peaceful transition and it will eventually happen. It should happen on my terms.”

Gratwick and Page walk from the rose bush to a bench. Gratwick sits down.

“Valerie, I’ve helped to establish something that has helped the World achieve peace and order. Put into the right hands, it can be a tool used for good and a weapon against evil. It depends on the people in charge. Mike Knox is one of those people.”

Gratwick takes Page’s hand.

“And so are you.”

Gratwick and Page take a few moments to stare out at the lake.

“You’ll have someone stay the night, and oversee the transition.”

“Chloe. She’s discreet. You won’t even feel it happening.”

Gratwick and Page walk to Page’s car.

“Mother Gratwick, I have to go.”

“I understand, Valerie. Have a safe trip.”

“Thank you, Mother Gratwick.”

“No. Thank you, Valerie.”

Good Morning Andromeda
Andromeda News Network
BREAKING NEWS
Monday, May 24, 2032
7:00 am

The Andromeda News Network morning show is abruptly interrupted by Mace Gumbel at the ANN Anchor Desk.

“We interrupt this program to bring news from World Assembly Territory. Long-serving Secretary-General Catherine Gratwick died in her sleep last night at her estate in World Assembly Territory. Flags at World Assembly facilities across the NS Universe were placed at half mast this morning. We here at the Andromeda News Network remember the life and times of Catherine Gratwick.”

Cut to photos of Gratwick’s early life.

“Born on May 1, 1953, Catherine Gratwick’s parents were minor government officials in Northern Wales. It was clear that Gratwick was an exceptional child. She was the valedictorian of her high school class at age 13.”

Image
Catherine Gratwick graduated from the University of Wales just after her 16th birthday.

“Gratwick earned degrees in Latin and Greek from the University of Wales in 1969 and an MBA from Harvard in 1971. She was also a nationally ranked fencer and world class chess player.”

“A shrewd investor, Gratwick made her first million by 1970. She befriended the heir to the Starbuck Security Systems fortune in business school. Within a year, she had married his father, the CEO of Starbuck. After the CEO dies in 1972, Gratwick became the majority shareholder of Starbuck.

“Gratwick and Starbuck supplied arms to insurgent groups throughout the Middle East and North Africa in the 1970s. Starbuck Security Systems become one of the largest arms dealers in the region. By 1980, Gratwick was one of the 100 richest women in the World.”

“Gratwick spent many of these years personally accompanying insurgent groups in the Middle East. During this time, the Red Guard started appearing around her.

Cut to footage of the Red Guard in full regalia.

“The Red Guard is Gratwick’s personal military force. According to legend, when Gratwick accompanied insurgent forced into battle, her mere presence among their ranks caused their enemies to surrender without a shot being fired. Some of the insurgents abandoned their causes and pledged their undying loyalty to Gratwick.”

Image
Although associated with the World Assembly, the Red Guard directly served Catherine Gratwick.

Cut to Gratwick speaking at the Planetary Peace Organization in the Emerald City.

“After her experiences in the field, Gratwick founded the Planetary Peace Organization in 1988. This organization was instrumental in helping with the post-Cold War transition in Eastern Europe. When the UN was reorganized into the World Assembly, Gratwick was appointed Secretary-General.”

Cut to Gratwick speaking before the World Assembly House of Delegates.

“During the tenure, The World Assembly has worked to maintain peace and stability throughout the NS Universe. Gratwick also established the Gratwick Trust, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the betterment of human kind, funding projects throughout the NS Universe.”

“There has been criticism against Gratwick’s stewardship of the World Assembly. Although order in World Assembly Territory is now maintained by a municipal police force, Gratwick’s personal Red Guard seems to hold ultimate authority in security and judicial matters.

There has also been criticism of the effectiveness and extent of the World Assembly’s authority over member states. Many in the House of Delegates have questioned whether certain resolutions should apply to less prosperous member states.”

Image

“There is also ‘the family,’ Gratwick’s inner circle. The Family seems to exist above the law and is treated like royalty throughout World Assembly Territory. Critics also suggest that members of the family have had an intimate relationship with the Secretary-General!”

“Several other women in the NationStates Universe have been named for Gratwick, including a famous art school professor and one of the world’s most vocal advocates for beauty pageants.”

“Catherine Gratwick was 79 years old.”

Memorial Service for Catherine Gratwick
The General Assembly Chamber
World Assembly Headquarters
Friday, May 28, 2032
1 pm

Throughout the NS Universe, World Assembly Regional Offices have had their flags at half mast since Monday. Neither the General Assembly nor the Security Council have met since Monday. Secretary-General Mike Knox declared today a holiday in World Assembly Territory, giving most of the Secretariat a three-day weekend.

Image
The World Assembly mourns the passing of their founding leader.

In the Chamber of the World Assembly House of Delegates, several Ambassadors and World Assembly officials are in attendance to pay respects to the long-standing leader of the World Assembly. A few national leaders are also in attendance.

Image
The House of Delegates Chamber.

The first few speakers were current and former officials the World Assembly Secretariat. They spoke of Gratwick as an inspiration for their service to the World Assembly. They spoke of the effect of World Assembly resolutions on their home countries.

The Red Guard, Gratwick’s personal guard, has also made their presence felt today, acting as security for the Memorial Service. Their presence was ubiquitous during Gratwick’s reign. Today, Red Guard soldiers patrol the streets as they did when she was in charge. A member of the Red Guard read a handwritten letter from their leader, Miriam Aaronsohn, who is currently in charge of Peacekeeping Forces on the Abu Continent.

Currently, the President of Wales, Ian Baker, is speaking about his experiences with Catherine Gratwick. Baker also happens to be Gratwick’s nephew.

Image
Ian Baker, the President of Wales, is Gratwick’s nephew.

“As a young man, I heard stories about this woman who would go into the desert and cause warriors to stop in their tracks. We would hear about these amazing things that Catherine Gratwick did. Even as a child, I found many of the stories hard to believe, until I finally met her.”

“Our family hadn’t seen much of her. She told us of the things she learned as a young woman living in the desert. She told us about the good works of the Planetary Peace Organization and the Gratwick Trust. The most important thing I realized was that Catherine Gratwick, for all of her exploits, was just a person.”

“She dedicated her entire life to establishing peace on our planet. She had extraordinary focus and stamina. But she was just a woman. She served as an inspiration for so many ordinary people who have risen to achieve extraordinary things. She had very little actual authority as Secretary-General, but led this organization through the strength of her example.”

“In many ways, we gather here not to mourn, but to celebrate. We celebrate that which has resulted from Catherine Gratwick’s leadership. We celebrate an increasingly prosperous, more peaceful world. Thank you.”

The crowd applauds politely. Welsh President Baker shakes hand with Secretary-General Knox. Knox’s final appearance on stage signals to the audience that the ceremony is about to conclude.

Knox stands at the stage thinking about returning home. Knox has traveled a great deal since he became Secretary-General four months ago. He thinks about his first trip home since taking office. He thinks about his wife and his children who are all in the Andromeda Islands.

“We will now gather to witness the procession to Catherine Gratwick’s body to her final resting place.”

Members of the Red Guard walk to either side of Gratwick’s casket. They carry the casket out of the Assembly Chamber, followed by Baker, Knox and a long line of Ambassadors, world leaders and officials. The Red Guard sets the casket down after carrying it to the Hanging Gardens.”

A helicopter flies to the Hanging Gardens from the north. As it touches down, the Red Guard places the coffin in the Helicopter and secures it. The helicopter ascends, taking Gratwick’s body to her estate for a second ceremony tomorrow.

As the crowd disperses, Knox is escorted to a non-descript sport utility vehicle which will take him to his yacht, the Bianca. After more than five months away, Mike Knox will be home by tomorrow.

The Catherine Gratwick Estate
World Assembly Territory
Saturday, May 29, 2032
Noon

A number of people have taken vigil on the Catherine Gratwick Estate grounds since her death was announced on Monday. The number of people who have camped out on the grounds have increased since Monday. Yesterday, when Catherine Gratwick’s body was delivered from World Assembly Headquarters, more than a thousand people were there to meet the helicopter that dropped it off.

Image
The Gratwick Estate.

The Red Guard arrived soon after, clearing Gratwick House of the guests who were currently staying there. Valerie Page, the San Angeles Ambassador to the World Assembly, was given Gratwick’s room. Page is also the acting Head of the Gratwick Trust, a foundation dedicated to funding projects in developing counties.

The remaining rooms in Gratwick House were reserved for special guests, which included national leaders, Page’s entourage, Red Guard and individuals officiating the memorial service.

The morning has been overcast, but it hasn’t rained. As noon approached, there were fewer clouds in the sky. At noon, two female members of the Red Guard escort a large muscular woman to a podium. The Red Guard members are wearing red robes while the woman, a Wiccan High Priestess, wears a green robe. The woman has several visible tattoos. The high priestess raises her hands and most of the crowd chatter stops.

“We have all gathered here to celebrate the life of Mother Gratwick. We give thanks to the Great Mother for manifesting herself in Mother Gratwick. Let us pray.”

Most of the attendees close their eyes.

“Mother, we thank you for bringing Catherine Gratwick to us for a short time. She arrived at just the right time, Mother.”

The high priestess raises her muscular, tattooed arms to the heavens.

Image
Women throughout the world converge on Gratwick House to celebrate the life of Catherine Gratwick.

“In a world where many women still lack educational opportunities, Mother Gratwick gave them access to education. In a world where many women are still treated as lesser beings, Catherine Gratwick showed us that women can achieve just as much as a man. In a world where poverty still exists, Catherine Gratwick made sure that it affects fewer people. There are fewer people at war because of the World Assembly that Catherine Gratwick once led. We acknowledge her legacy as one of your greatest gifts, Mother. We thank you.”

“We thank you,” comes from many in the crowd.

After the priestess leads the crowd in song, she gives the stage to Valerie Page, who is also dressed as a Wiccan High priestess.

“Good afternoon.”

“Good afternoon,” the crowd repeats back.

Image
Valerie Page is seen as the natural successor to Catherine Gratwick.

“As many of you know, I became a close friend of Catherine Gratwick. I was introduced to Mother Gratwick by her eventual successor, Mike Knox. My meetings with her inspired me to become more than just the Ambassador from Republic of Southern California. She inspired me to be an advocate for women everywhere, just as she was.”

“Catherine Gratwick defied the odds even when she was young. She is one of the youngest people to graduate from high school in Wales. She was a nationally ranked fencer and a world class chess player. She was a millionaire before she was 20 and one of the richest women in the world by the time she was 30.”

“Had she simply continued as CEO of Starbuck Security Services, she would be known as one of the shrewdest businesswomen in the world. Had she simply established the Red Guard, she would be known as one of the great peacemakers in our time. Instead, she created the Planetary Peace Organization. Mother Gratwick wasn’t just interested in peace in the Middle East. She sought peace throughout the world.”

“When the World Assembly was first formed, Catherine Gratwick seemed an odd choice to be the first Secretary-General. History has shown that she was the right choice. The World has never seen a period where most of mankind basked in the light of peace. As head of the World Assembly, Catherine Gratwick brought that peace.”

“Mother Gratwick also inspired many of us to achieve extraordinary things. Because of her example, more countries are comfortable with female leadership. She has shown that women, and ordinary people, can achieve extraordinary things.”

“So, tonight, we will mourn, but we will also celebrate. The Gratwick Estate will remain open to the public until 9am Monday morning.”

A night-long celebration will begin soon after Page leads a procession to the shore just north of the estate. Gratwick’s remains will be burned and her ashes will be cast out to sea.

The Knox Estate
Todd’s Cove, Allied States
Sunday, May 30, 2032
2:00 pm

Mike Knox and Bianca Russell were married nearly 22 years ago in Todd’s Cove. Knox was a professional basketball player and a member of the Assembly of the Allied States. Bianca Russell was a professional soccer player. Both of them represented the Allied States in international competition.

Bianca Knox wasn’t especially fond of public life. She spent most of her time in Todd’s Cove with her growing family. By the time Mike Knox became Vice President, he and Bianca had two sons, a daughter and a third son on the way.

Bianca Russell enjoys being a wife and a mother. She now enjoys being a grandmother. Her eldest son, Chad Russell Knox and his wife, Lupe Gomez, have a one month old son, Chad. Jack Russell is also there with his wife, Myrtle Pratt, and their daughter, Joanna. The five sit in the living room as Knox walks in.

“So, what did you all want to talk to me about?”

“We need to talk about your sons.”

Bianca Knox sounds worried.

“I don’t know what to do with them.”

Knox sits down.

“What is it I need to know?”

“Your son Ken wants to enter politics.”

“That doesn’t surprise me.”

“He wants to manage a campaign. Someone named Ellis Curry, a classmate of his from Joppa. And that’s not all.”

“What is it?”

“Your other two sons want to run this year?”

Knox turns to Russ Knox and Jack Russell.

“Ken’s about to graduate from Law School. I can understand that, but you two?”

“We’re your sons, Mr. President.”

Image
Chad Russell Knox, Mike Knox’s eldest son.

“What makes you think you’re both ready for the Assembly? You’re only 23, Russ.”

“You were 23, father.”

“Things were different then. Many Assemblymen were placeholders. The Assembly is a more serious place now.”

“Uncle Mike, we’re running for State Council.”

Image
Jack Russell, Mike Knox’s nephew, was raised as Mike Knox’s son since his parents died.

“Bianca, what are they teaching at Todd’s Cove? You know that I’m not so popular these days.”

“Maybe not in Conservative circles, Dad. But here in Todd’s Cove, you’re like a god.”

“We’ve got Charlie Young’s blessing.”

Mike Knox knows Charlie Young. Before she succeeded him in the Assembly, she was his chief of staff in Todd’s Cove.

“Charlie is coming back to Todd’s Cove. She wants to become Governor of Todd’s Cove. That means winning six council seats.”

Knox looks at Russell’s wife, Myrtle.

“What do you think of all this?”

“I’m all for it, Uncle Mike. In fact, I’m running too.”

Myrtle Pratt Russell’s father is Orson Pratt, a member of the Assembly’s Education committee, a high-ranking Conservative and a high ranking official in the Andromeda LDS Church. Pratt left the LDS Church during her freshman year at Todd’s Cove just after she met Jack Russell.

Knox looks at Lupe.

Image
Myrtle Pratt left the Andromeda LDS Church just after meeting Jack Russell.

“Are you running too, Mrs. Knox?”

“No. One of us has to take care of these kids.”

Image
Guadeloupe Gomez married Russ Knox during their freshman year at the University of Todd’s Cove

“I’m glad someone has some sense. Politics in the Andromeda Islands can be dirty... And dangerous.”

“Mr. Knox, my father is Orson Pratt.”

“We all know about Andromeda politics, dad. We learned from The Masters.”

Knox pauses.

“You have Charlie Young’s blessing?”

“She encouraged me and Jack to run, Dad.”

“And you’re not just running as Mike Knox’s kids? People will want to see that you’re more than just a Knox.”

“We understand, Uncle Mike.”

Knox sits back.

“Bianca, if they want to run, they should run. The worst that could happen is that they lose.”

Bianca Knox says nothing. She grabs Knox’s hand.

“Bea, is Ken coming home this week?”

“He and Vicki are coming.”

Knox laughs. Ken Knox’s wife is also Valerie Page’s niece.

Government Center
Joppa, Joppa State
Monday, June 14, 2032
8:00 am

Rose Jackson stands outside of Government Center. She will preview a trial that will begin in just under an hour: The People vs. Canaan Jackson. Several people are already filing into Government Center in order to watch the trial.

Image
Government Center in Joppa.

“In just under an hour, opening statements will begin in State vs. Jackson. The defendant, Cannan Jackson, is the CEO of Criminal Records, a record label that mainly promotes rap artists. Most of the artists from Criminal Records, including Jackson himself, have been in trouble with the law.

Cut to footage from New Year’s Eve in Joppa. Jackson voices over the footage.

“Most recently, Jackson and members of his rap group, The Riders, were arrested on New Year’s Eve once a riot ensued at the beginning of their performance in Joppa Square. Jackson turned to Joe Napoli, the Governor of Joppa State.”

Canaan Jackson turns to Joe Napoli, whose entourage is walking back to Government Center.

“Uncle Joe, this is for you.”

Cut back to Rose Jackson.

Image
Canaan Jackson, CEO of Criminal Records.

“Canaan Jackson’s label has been closely associated with The Urban Guerrillas, a street gang that has long been a target of the Joppa Police Department. The two men convicted of murdering Governor Napoli were both members of the Urban Guerrillas. They were also artists connected with the Criminal Records label. After the incident, their motorcycle was found behind the building where Criminal Records is headquartered.”

“What prosecutors will attempt to prove in this trial is that the two murderers were acting under direct orders from Cannan Jackson. They contend that Criminal Records and the Urban Guerrillas are, for all intents and purposes, the same organization, under the direction of Canaan Jackson. Jackson himself claims that this case is a result of continued harassment from Joppa Police and the Andromeda Judicial system.”

Cut to David Dewey, the attorney representing Canaan Jackson and Criminal Records.

“The Treaty of Portsmouth, our founding document, guarantees to every citizen the freedom of expression. It doesn’t restrict that freedom to popular speech or proper speech. This trial is about the Joe Napoli Government going after Canaan Jackson and Criminal Records for unmasking corruption within the Joppa Police Department.”

Cut to Prosecutor Bass Reeves, holding the Riders CD.

“The Treaty of Portsmouth, as amended, also gives each citizen the right not to incriminate themselves. Just look at some of these titles on this CD. You can’t tell me that this is about free speech. Canaan Jackson is a criminal, and we need to do whatever we can to keep him and his merry band of super-thugs off the streets.”

Cut back to Rose Jackson. A number of protesters, dressed in black, assembly outside of Government center.

“Just behind me are supporters of Canaan Jackson who are about to stage a protest against these court proceedings.”

Rose Jackson walks over to the protest organizer, Ranita Wattley who is a member of the Assembly of the Allied States.

“With me this morning is Ranita Wattley, Pastor of the Foursquare Gospel Church in South Joppa and a supporter of Canaan Jackson. As a member of the religious community, why are you supporting Canaan Jackson.”

Image
Assemblywoman Ranita Wattley, Pastor of the Foursquare Gospel Church.

“We support the provisions of the Treaty of Portsmouth that defend free speech in the Allied States. Those same provisions also defend the freedom of religion in our country. If Canaan Jackson loses this case, it will mean that unpopular religions in the Allied States can be shut down based on what a majority in the Assembly says or what a majority in the State Council says. That’s not what our country is about.”

“What about those who say that Canaan Jackson is a criminal?”

“Whatever crimes Canaan Jackson may have committed as a young man... God has forgiven him. He has been a faithful member of the Foursquare Gospel Church since he was a young man. He believes in a God that forgives, even if the Joppa Government doesn’t.”

Rose Jackson turns back to the camera.

“There you have it. The battle lines have been drawn for what many in legal and media circles call The Trial of the Century. Coverage of State v. Jackson begins in less than an hour. Rose Jackson. Andromeda News Network.”

Rose Jackson stands in front of Government Center in Joppa. The first week of State v. Canaan Jackson is in the books.

“Prosecutors have wrapped up their case in State vs. Canaan Jackson, which has been dubbed “The Trial of the Century.” Earlier this week, they established a pattern of behavior by Canaan Jackson and his associates.”

Cut to Joppa Prosecutor Bass Reeves questioning a police detective.

Image
Bass Reeves is an attorney with the Joppa Prosecutor’s Office.

“And this person was convicted?”

“Yes. He was.”

“And how was this person associated with Canaan Jackson?”

“He’s an artist on Jackson’s label, Criminal Records.”

“Would you say that a lot of ‘artists’ in Criminal Records in fact have criminal records?”

“Objection! Speculative!”

“I’ll rephrase the question. Aren’t the people employed by the Criminal Records label a bunch of worthless guttersnipes?”

“Your honor.”

“Mr. Reeves, you know better.”

Cut to Rose Jackson outside of Government Center.

“There was also testimony from a guidance counselor from Jackson’s high school.”

Cut back to prosecutor Bass Reeves.

“Many of these students would say that Canaan Jackson told them something or another, then they would act out.”

“Was Canaan Jackson ever in your office?”

“He was in my office a few times during his freshman year. He was a troublemaker.”

“What happened after his freshman year?”

“Instead of him being in trouble, many people in his circle would get in trouble.”

“But not him.”

“No. He was untouchable.”

Cut back to Rose Jackson.

“David Dewey, representing Canaan Jackson, maintained a singular strategy.”

Cut to David Dewey cross-examining the police officer.

“Do you have any evidence of my client, Canaan Jackson, ordering the death of Governor Joe Napoli?”

“The shooter and his accomplice were artists on the Criminal Records label.”

Image
David Dewey, Canaan Jackson’s attorney, is the managing partner of the Law Offices of Dewey, Cheatam and Howe.

“That’s not what I asked, officer. I’ll rephrase. Do you know that my client, Canaan Jackson, gave the order to kill Governor Joe Napoli? Yes or no?”

“No.”

“No further questions, your honor.”

Cut to Dewey cross-examining the guidance counselor.

“Did you like Canaan Jackson?”

“It’s not a matter of liking or disliking. His file suggested that he was a troublemaker.”

“Do all supposed ‘troublemakers’ remain so throughout their high school careers?”

“No.”

“Do you like the music made by Criminal Records?”

“I don’t know enough about their music.”

“But you know that their music is controversial.”

“If you can call it music.”

“Should we convict my client based on your personal musical tastes?”

“Of course not.”

Cut to Rose Jackson.

“Prosecutor Bass Reeves also asked police officers about the chain of evidence.”

“Would you say that Governor Joe Napoli’s dislike of Canaan Jackson was common knowledge?”

“Anyone who saw the New Year’s Eve celebration could tell you that.”

“In hindsight, would you say that Governor Napoli’s dislike of Canaan Jackson was justified?”

“Objection. Speculative.”

Bass Reeves continues his questioning.

“Just after the shooting, where was the motorcycle in question found?”

“Behind the Criminal Records building.”

“And, why would they go there?”

“Objection! Speculative!”

Cut to Rose Jackson.

“When the trial resumes on Monday, David Dewey will present the defense case in an attempt to clear Canaan Jackson of any wrongdoing. Rose Jackson, Andromeda News Network.”

Rose Jackson stands outside of Government Center after the defense made their case for Canaan Jackson’s innocence.

“In State v. Jackson, Defense Attorney David Dewey spent much of the week focusing on perceived bias against Canaan Jackson and Criminal Records from the Joppa Police Department, questioning the character of Governor Joe Napoli. On Monday, he interviewed Jermaine Woods, one of the two men found guilty of shooting Joe Napoli.”

Cut to Dewey interviewing Woods.

“Would you say that it’s common knowledge that Canaan Jackson didn’t like Governor Joe Napoli?”

Image
Jermaine Woods was found guilty of shooting Governor Joe Napoli.

“Hell yeah! He hated the Motherfucker.”

The judge bangs his gavel as observers laugh.

“Mr. Woods, this is a court of law.”

“He hated Joe Napoli.”

“Why did Jackson hate Governor Napoli?”

“The police was always fu..., fooling with us. It was black against blue, dog. Uncle Joe had it in for us.”

“Now, this is important. Despite Canaan Jackson’s hatred for Joe Napoli, did he ever specifically order you to shoot and kill Governor Joe Napoli on April 10, 2032?”

“Specifically...”

Both Dewey and Reeves are amazed that Woods doesn’t know what the word means.

“Did he ever say anything like ‘kill Joe Napoli’ to you?”

“He ain’t tell us specifically or no other kind of way.”

“No further questions, your honor.”

Voice over from Rose Jackson.

“Joppa Prosecutor Bass Reeves questioned Wood’s credibility.”

“In hindsight, doesn’t it appear that the Joppa Police were justified in their focus on Criminal Records?”

“What you tryin’ to say?”

“I mean, you are a convicted killer. You and your partner killed the Governor. You two are in prison forever.”

Woods stares blankly.

“So, you have nothing to say about Joppa’s finest getting scum like you off the street?”

“Fuck you!”

The judge bangs his gavel. Court observers are shocked. Reeves appears unaffected by Woods’ response.

“It should be clear to everyone here that you, Jermaine Woods, are a jailhouse snitch. Frankly, I’m surprised that the defense would call you as a witness at all.”

“Objection. Mr. Reeves is giving a speech.”

“I’ll rephrase, your honor. Mr. Woods, isn’t your credibility on the level of crocodile piss?”

Members of the jury laugh. The judge bangs his gavel angrily.

“Mr. Reeves, another outburst like that and I’ll find you for contempt.”

“Again, I apologize, your honor. Mr. Woods, based on what we know, would you say that you have zero credibility?”

“Go fuck yourself!”

“Mr. Woods...”

“It’s all right, your honor. We just got a demonstration of Mr. Woods’ impulsiveness, his willingness to say and do whatever it takes for him to get his way. The value of Mr. Woods’ word amounts to zero.”

Voice over by Rose Jackson.

“During closing statements, Prosecutor Bass Reeves hammered at the character of Canaan Jackson.”

“Canaan Jackson has a clear history of manipulating poor saps like Jermaine Woods and Quasim Carswell to do his bidding. When Woods and Carswell decided to kill Governor Napoli, it was Canaan Jackson...”

Reeves turns and points toward Canaan Jackson.

“It was Canaan Jackson,” Reeves shouted. “CANAAN JACKSON who pulled the strings. He might not have explicitly said, ‘Go kill Joe Napoli.’ He knew that he didn’t have to.”

Voice over by Rose Jackson.

“During his closing statement, David Dewey emphasized two points, the supposed bias of Joppa Law enforcement and the supposed lack of evidence against Canaan Jackson.”

“It’s clear that Canaan Jackson has spoken out against the Joppa Police Department. It’s clear that Jackson has justified hatred of Governor Napoli. But there’s no evidence that Canaan Jackson gave the order to kill him. Jermaine Woods and Quasim Carswell did the shooting, but Canaan Jackson didn’t do it.”

Cut to Rose Jackson outside of Government Center.

“After closing statements this afternoon, Judge Gerald White sent the jury to decide on the fate of Canaan Jackson. Both Prosecutor Bass Reeves and Defense Attorney David Dewey are confident that the jury will rule in their favor. Only time will tell. Rose Jackson, Andromeda News Network.”

World Assembly Security Council Chamber
World Assembly Headquarters
Thursday, June 24, 2032
12:05 pm

As people throughout the Andromeda Islands wait for the jury to render a verdict in State v. Jackson, ANN World Assembly Correspondent Stacy Riley reports from World Assembly Territory on a scandal that has brought the World Assembly to a standstill.

“As most in the Andromeda Islands anticipate a verdict in the Andromedan Trial of the Century, much has occurred with our World Assembly Delegation. Jaclyn Bishop currently represents the Andromeda Islands in both the House of Delegates and the Security Council.

Image
Jaclyn Bishop, Andromedan Representative to the House of Delegates, is now the Acting Representative to the Security Council.

The World Assembly has been essentially shut down since the death of former Secretary-General Catherine Gratwick last month. Investigators employed by the World Assembly Secretariat have discovered improper connections between eight Security Council members and Triumph Security Services, one of the world’s major arms manufacturers.”

Cut to a spokesperson for the Secretariat.

“We have established that a number of payments were made between Triumph Security Services and at least eight members of the World Assembly Security Council. The governments representing these Council members have been notified and advised on the appropriate course of action.”

Voice over from Riley.

“Triumph Security Services happens to be the largest supplier of arms to the Kingdom of Abu Salih.”

Cut to footage from Abu Salih.

“Triumph is also reportedly a major supplier of arms to the insurgent groups fighting against the Abu Kingdom. They have essentially been supplying weapons and ammunition to both sides on the Abu Continent.”

Cut to Security Council coverage.

“Triumph’s influence over the Security Council has caused several anti-gun resolutions passed by the World Assembly House of Delegates to die in the Security Council.”

Voice over from Riley.

“Among the members implicated in the Triumph Bribery Scandal are Security Council President Allen Richmond and Andromedan Ambassador Gina Castiglione.

Image
Gina Castiglione has been dismissed as the Andromedan representative to the Security Council.

Cut to footage from Todd House in Andromeda City.

“Government spokesman Johnny Romanov was asked about the situation with Gina Castiglione, a former Vice President, yesterday during the daily press briefing.”

Cut to Johnny Romanov.

“The President has been informed of the situation with Gina C and will make an announcement within the next few days.”

“Will there be charges brought against Gina C?”

“Thank you.”

Johnny Romanov leaves the press room. Cut to Stacy Riley.

“With both Gina C and the Security Council President among the eight implicated, it’s possible that the balance of power in the Security Council could change dramatically in the next weeks. Valerie Page, the San Angeles Ambassador to the Security Council had this to say.”

Image
Valerie Page of San Angeles will likely become the next President of the Security Council.

“We have had several representatives come to the Security Council and tell us about the killings in the northern part of the continent. They wanted to stop the pipeline of weapons to ISIS. There were eight or nine of my colleagues who didn’t see it that way.”

Cut to Riley.

“A resolution passed by the World Assembly House of Delegates must also gain the approval of two-thirds of the 21 Security Council nations. As of now, there are only 13 members of the Security Council. Until action is taken, legislative power in the World Assembly is shut down. Stacy Riley, Andromeda News Network.”

Pat Novak, host of the Novak Element, is one of the most vocal critics of the current Andromeda Government. Novak never hesitates to rail against a number of groups, like the ruling Social Democrats, the World Assembly and rap artists. Novak is relishing the verdict in that it gives him the opportunity to criticize the Social Democrats, who also run Joppa State Government.

“The Novak Element is on. On today’s show, we will discuss the verdict that came down in Joppa less than two hours ago.”

Image
Pat Novak hosts the Novak Element.

Cut to the courtroom in Joppa. The jury announces the verdict.

“On the charge of conspiracy to murder, we the jury find the defendant, Canaan Jackson, Not guilty!”

The courtroom erupted. Supporters of Canaan Jackson cheer. Opponents are dejected.

Voice over by Pat Novak.

“The Joppa Government, run by the Social Democrats, failed to convict Canaan Jackson of any wrongdoing in the murder of Joppa Governor Joe Napoli.”

Image
Canaan Jackson is found innocent.

Cut back to Pat Novak.

“While Governor Joe Napoli was a Social Democrat, he believed in Law and Order in Joppa State. He worked to make sure that the ancient capital of the Andromeda Archipelago was also one of the country’s safest cities. He did what any able municipal administrator would do. He targeted communities that traditionally caused the most trouble.”

Image
Joe Napoli (1955-2032) was the long-standing Governor of Joppa State.

“Joe Napoli’s Government targeted Criminal Records, a record label composed of artists with... criminal records. They constantly brag about misogyny, cruelty and criminal behavior in their profanity-laced songs, if you can call them that.”

“Canaan Jackson claimed that Criminal Records was unfairly targeted for saying unpopular things. It doesn’t take a detective to figure out that an outfit called Criminal Records would be a place to go to find law breakers.”

“It was clear that Canaan Jackson hated Governor Napoli. It was also clear to anyone with common sense that Jermaine Woods and Quasim Carswell, the two shooters, were acting under the direction of Canaan Jackson, even if Jackson didn’t explicitly tell them to pull the trigger.”

“The fact that Bass Reeves, a politically ambitious prosecutor, was unable to convict Canaan Jackson shows the weakness of the current Social Democratic governments in both Joppa and Andromeda City. Bass Reeves’ incompetence has resulted in a killer going free, but this is about more than Bass Reeves’ ineptitude.”

“Canaan Jackson is free to continue producing ‘songs’ criticizing law enforcement and government officials. This sort of travesty would have never occurred if Conservatives controlled Joppa State. This would have never happened if there were a Conservative in Todd House.”

“With us today to discuss the verdict is the current Chief Prosecutor for St. Paul State Peter Jacobs. What just happened today?”

Image
Peter Jacobs is the Chief Prosecutor for St. Paul State.

“This was perhaps the most humiliating verdict that has ever been brought in Andromeda history. Canaan Jackson has all but admitted that he ordered Governor Napoli’s murder, through his public statements and through many of his songs, and he was still found not guilty.”

“Now, to be fair Mr. Prosecutor, the CDs made by Criminal Records aren’t really admissions. They’re artistic work product that don’t necessarily reflect the personal opinions of the artist.”

“Criminals have been convicted in St. Paul State with less evidence than what could have been readily available to Bass Reeves. What Reeves did amounts to legal malpractice. He shouldn’t just be fired as Chief Prosecutor of Joppa State, he should be disbarred.”

“Isn’t some of the problem due to the laws on the books?”

“Indeed, Pat. Prosecutors can only do so much under the current statutes. Thankfully, here in St. Paul, we have tougher laws than they do in Joppa. People like Canaan Jackson should be off the streets.”

“Thanks for joining us, Mr. Jacobs. In our next segment, we’ll discuss some of the so-called songs put out by Canaan Jackson’s Criminal Record label.”

The Seaside Hotel
Beta City, Beta State
Saturday, June 26, 2032
7:00 pm

After a day of sightseeing, Henry and Octavia Godwin arrive at the Hotel. Each year, the Godwin family comes to Lion of Judah Worship Center in Beta City in order to raise funds from Evangelical Christian leaders. This year, Mr. And Mrs. Godwin decided to go without their children.

Instead of a romantic afternoon, Henry and Octavia Godwin spent their sightseeing trip discussing the purpose of their trip. The discussion continues once they enter the hotel room.

Image
Henry Godwin is one of the few moderates left in the Conservative Party.

“It’s perfectly simple, Octavia.”

Godwin sets down their luggage.

“The Evangelicals and the Mormons run the Conservative Party. I’m not associating with the Mormons, so if we’re not associated with the Evangelicals, we don’t have a home in the Conservative Party.”

Godwin carries the luggage into the bedroom.

“Gerhardt Holst has a home in the Conservative Party.”

Godwin sets the luggage down on the bed.

“Garry Holst’s father was a popular President. My father wasn’t.”

Image
Octavia Godwin thinks her husband should leave the Conservative Party.

“Henry, you’re the Assemblyman for the Godwin district. It’s named after our family. You don’t need to come to Beta City every year.”

“Having the Evangelicals on our side makes things much easier. Not everyone in our district is Catholic.”

“Not everyone in our district is Conservative either. You don’t need to do this every year.”

“We do, Octavia. We need Alonzo Brown and Donnie Kurtz on our side. If we alienate them, our district becomes a swing district.”

Octavia Godwin sits on the bed as Godwin unpacks his suit for tomorrow.

“Henry, they don’t vote for the Conservative Party. They don’t vote for your father. They vote for you. You represent our district well. You don’t need Alonzo Brown or Joe Rutherford’s back. You know what you should do.”

Henry Godwin stops for a second and ponders the idea.

“Who do you spend more time with? Chuck Husted or Anna Kaewkhonkaen?”

“Anna Kaewkhonkaen is the Naval Minister.”

“Who do you spend more time with, the Social Democrats or the Conservatives?”

“I spend time with the people who control the legislative process.”

“More than Alonzo Brown and Joe Rutherford do. You might as well be a Social Democrat. Nobody would blame you if you crossed the aisle.”

Godwin is finished hanging up his suit.

“Our district is a Conservative District. I’m a Conservative, like my father.”

Image
Randy Godwin served as President of the Allied States from November, 2014 to July, 2015.

Octavia Godwin shakes her head.

“You’re not your father, Henry. The people back home will understand if you cross the aisle.”

Henry Godwin is unable to find words as he walks toward the telephone. He abruptly changes the subject.

“Octavia, could you check the room service menu and see if there’s anything good?”

“Sure thing, Henry.”

Octavia Godwin looks at the menu.

“There’s a salmon dish that looks good.”

“Good. At least we agree on something.”

Lion of Judah Worship Center
Beta City, Beta State
Sunday, June 27, 2032
11:30 am

The Lion of Judah Worship Center is the largest church in the Allied States. Nearly every official in Beta City Government attends Lion of Judah. Most members of the Beta City delegation to the Assembly are also members of Lion of Judah.

Image
The Lion of Judah Worship Center is the largest church in the Allied States.

Conservative Politicians from all over the Allied States come to Lion of Judah in order to ingratiate themselves with Evangelical Christians. Evangelicals are perhaps the largest group within the Conservative Party in the Allied States. Because of this, Conservatives dominate the Beta State Council and control all but one Assembly seat from Beta City.

Assemblyman Henry Godwin arrived at Lion of Judah more than an hour ago. They shook hands with Pastor Carter Duckett, who was now a member of the Beta State Council. They also shook hands with some of their colleagues from the Assembly, including Alonzo Brown and Donnie Kurtz. Brown was Duckett’s predecessor at Lion of Judah.

Godwin and his wife sit in the massive sanctuary, which resembles a stadium. They sat through a few performances and announcements before Pastor Duckett began his performance. Henry and Octavia Godwin saw it as a performance, because after he gives his initial talk, ushers start passing around offering plates throughout the audience.

“If you give generously of your time and your resources, those seeds will reap a harvest for you. You will be rewarded.”

Image
Rev. Duckett encourages his parishioners to give money to his church.

Godwin sits through Duckett’s sermon, skeptical about what he’s saying. He sees that his wife is equally skeptical. Godwin asks his wife a question.

“Do you think God needs money?”

“What?”

“Do you think God needs money?”

Octavia Godwin looks around while many in the congregation listens intently to Duckett’s sermon.

“He must. Duckett seems to talk a lot about money.”

Godwin points to a random couple a few rows down.

“You see that couple there? They don’t look rich. Should they be giving all that money to Duckett? They could put that money to better use than Duckett could.”

“But, Henry, Pastor Duckett needs that money to spread the Gospel.”

Henry Godwin knew when his wife was being facetious .

“He’s definitely spreading it.”

Godwin and his wife are both tapped on the shoulder.

“Do you mind? I’m trying to listen to the show.”

“Sorry.”

As Duckett drones on about giving money, a thought occurs to Godwin.

“The show?”

Godwin turns to the woman. He recognizes her.

“Brandt. What are you doing here?”

Stephanie Brandt is the sole Social Democrat representing Beta City in the Assembly of the Allied States.

Image
Stephanie Brandt is the lone Social Democrat in the Assembly from Beta City.

“I’m enjoying the show. And I agree with you. God doesn’t need our money.”

“Miss Brandt,” Octavia Godwin interjects. “What compels you to come here?”

“You ever been in a church service where the Minister railed against you?”

“Can’t say I have.”

“I have. It’s amusing.”

“So why do you come?”

“I’m here reaching out to lost souls who would rather spend a Sunday afternoon playing volleyball on the beach.”

“Volleyball?”

“Fellowship, Assemblyman Godwin. That’s part of being a Christian.”

“It’s certainly more of a measure than how much money you give.”

“Or how often you attend church.”

“And, how much money does it take to play volleyball?”

“There’s one way to find out, Assemblyman Godwin.”

The Godwins and Stephanie Brandt look at Duckett as he dispatches the ushers to collect money. Godwin turns to Octavia and Brandt.

“Volleyball it is.”

“Let’s go.”

Henry Godwin, Octavia Godwin and Stephanie Brandt abruptly leave the Lion of Judah Worship Center just before the ushers file through the sanctuary to accept tithes and offerings.

ACM Sunday
Andromeda Conservative Television
Palermo, Palermo State
Sunday, July 11, 2032
10:30 am

Today’s episode of ACM Sunday is being filmed in the Palermo Purple Cobra Arena, where the Conservative Conference will take place this week. The host of ACM Sunday, Steve Hartman, hosts a panel of Conservative Commentators for a discussion of the several candidates for the Conservative Leadership.

Image
Steve Hartman hosts a Sunday morning talk show on Andromeda Conservative Media.

“For the rest of the hour, we will discuss what will happen during the Conservative Conference this week. With me to discuss the future of Andromeda Conservatism are Assemblyman Edgar Lynch of St. Paul and former Assemblyman Rodney Case of Portsmouth. Assemblyman Case, before we start with you, do you plan to run for your old seat?”

“Most certainly, Steve. The question is if First Lady Linda Clark will run again. She hasn’t announced.”

“And you, Assemblyman Lynch, will you run for re-election?”

“I plan to, yes.”

“Now on to the Presidential race. Let’s discuss the main contenders. First, Assemblyman Dominic Ball of Valois. What do you think, Ed?

“He may be from one of the richest families in the Allied States, but he has no chance. He’s dividing the libertarian wing of the Conservative movement, since Ross Ewing held that mantle two years ago.

Image
Assemblyman Dominic Ball of Valois State.

“I wouldn’t even call the libertarian faction a wing. There’s no compelling reason to vote for Dominic Ball, since every other candidate in the Conservative race has embraced a hands off economic strategy.”

“So, Mr. Case, what about Ross Ewing?”

Image
Assemblyman John Ross Ewing IV of Athens.

“As much as I like my former colleague in the Finance Committee, I don’t see how someone who was part of a losing ticket in the last election becomes the nominee. Ross Ewing may be the next Treasury Minister, but he isn’t going to be President.”

“I don’t see Ross Ewing winning the nomination. Next!”

Next up is Assemblyman Rufus Boutwell of Beta City, a folk hero in the Conservative movement. What about him, Rod?

“Mr. Boutwell’s stand against Clark Care has raised his stock in Conservative circles. Boutwell has a national following, but I don’t see it translating well in the overall electorate. He has no appeal outside of the party.”

Image
Assemblyman Rufus Boutwell of Beta City.

“Rufus Boutwell, like Dominic Ball, could become a player once he has a little more experience. He will be useful in the campaign, but not as the nominee.”

Then, there’s the hometown girl, Assemblywoman Athena Coleman of Palermo. Ed.”

Image
Assemblywoman Athena Coleman of Palermo.

“Athena Coleman has been a shrewd politician since she joined the Assembly two years ago. She has convinced the party to have the Conference in Palermo twice in a row. She also knows that her base, the Evangelicals, may want one of them on the ticket. She has an outside chance at the nomination if Joe Rutherford and Alonzo Brown tear each other down.”

“Coleman’s influence helped Alonzo Brown win the Conservative nod two years ago. She will likely have a hand in deciding who will be the nominee this time around, and she would be a logical choice as the VP pick, especially for Joe Rutherford.”

“What about the previous nominee, Alonzo Brown?”

Image
Assemblyman Alonzo Brown of Beta City.

“I personally support Brown,” Rodney Case says. “Brown has put the Conservative Party within striking distance of the Social Democrats. It’s because of his work that we have a chance in 2032.”

“Wait a minute, Rod,” Edgar Lynch interjects. “Alonzo Brown stepped down as Conservative leader right after the election.”

“He was in the hospital, Ed.”

“It’s Joe Rutherford who has led the Conservative Party for the past eighteen months. He has laid the groundwork for the upcoming campaign, not Alonzo Brown.”

“By himself, Ed? What about Athena Coleman and Rufus Boutwell?”

Image
Assemblyman Joe Rutherford of St. Paul.

“I concede that it’s a team effort, but Alonzo Brown shouldn’t get to coach the team after Joe Rutherford spent months getting them ready for the game.”

“So, we can assume Ed that you’re supporting Joe Rutherford.”

“Certainly. It’s Joe Rutherford’s leadership that will get us victory in 2032. He has done the hard work, raised the money and given us the vision we need to win.”

“I agree with Ed that Joe Rutherford has done the groundwork. Where I disagree is with the assertion that Alonzo Brown wouldn’t have done the same thing in his own way. Brown may not have the money Rutherford has, but he has established the sort of grass roots movement we need to be competitive. Elections aren’t just won with money.”

“So, you two agree that it’s Joe Rutherford vs. Alonzo Brown?”

“I think it’s Alonzo Brown vs. Joe Rutherford with Athena Coleman on the ticket.”

“I see Joe Rutherford winning in a walk.”

“Thank you, Mr. Case and Assemblyman Lynch. We’ll be right back with the last word after these messages.”

2032 Conservative Conference
Palermo Stadium, Palermo State
Monday, July 12, 2032
Noon

In a Conference room at Palermo Stadium, Andromeda Conservative Media host Steve Hartman hosts a proxy debate between Beta City Assemblyman Carter Duckett and Lorna Campbell, former head of the College Conservatives of the Andromeda Islands. Duckett, Head Pastor of the Lion of Judah Worship Center in Beta City, supports Alonzo Brown. Campbell, a recent graduate of the University of East Portsmouth, supports Joe Rutherford.

Image

A number of supporters of Alonzo Brown and Joe Rutherford have shown up just as much to see the two Assembly members as they have to hear the debate. Duckett, head of the largest church in the Allied States, ran a successful campaign for Beta City’s State Council two years ago. His wife, Georgia, lost her Assembly campaign against current Assemblyman Stephanie Brandt.

Lorna Campbell’s uncle, Dole Campbell, served as leader of the Conservative Party. She served as head of the East Portsmouth College Conservatives in her junior year and head of the national College Conservatives in her senior year. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Andromeda LDS Church.

Hartman begins the debate.

“Ms. Campbell, what do you say about Joe Rutherford’s religion being an issue in this campaign?”

Image
Lorna Campbell is running for an Assembly seat in East Portsmouth.

“Well, Steve, the Treaty of Portsmouth reiterates a long-standing tradition that has existed in the Archipelago, Freedom of Religion. Joe Rutherford has been a tireless public servant, just as some might argue that Alonzo Brown and President Clark are good public servants. Joe Rutherford and Alonzo Brown have both proven themselves to be men of faith.”

“I agree with Ms. Campbell,” Duckett adds. “We all know that Alonzo Brown will surround himself with good people. I don’t doubt that Joe Rutherford would surround himself with good people. Can we say that about Joe Clark and Leonard Lawrence?”

Hartman turns to Duckett.

“Reverend Duckett, there are many who say that Alonzo Brown left the Conservative leadership after the campaign because he was bored with it. Now, he wants to be the leader when excitement of the campaign starts. What do you say about that?”

Duckett is a bit surprised at the question.

“Most everyone in the Conservative delegation knows that Rev. Brown had a heart attack early last year. It wasn’t as if he was just bored. He couldn’t be the Conservative leader at that time. What are you suggesting, Steve?”

“I’m not suggesting anything. I’m just expressing a sentiment that’s out there in Conservative circles.”

Image
Rev. Carter Duckett heads the largest church in the Allied States.

“Let’s be clear, Steve. Andromeda Conservative Media has been expressing this ‘sentiment’ for weeks now. We both know that it was Alonzo Brown’s leadership that helped this party make the gains it made two years ago. It’s our faction, the Evangelicals, who have kept the Conservative Party afloat, and it should be Alonzo Brown, leader of the Evangelicals, who should win the party leadership and become the next President.

“Ms. Campbell?”

“With all due respect to Reverend Duckett, the Conservative Party needs strong, vigorous, determined leadership. For whatever reason, Alonzo Brown wasn’t able to maintain the Conservative leadership. I honor our former leader and appreciate his efforts, but we shouldn’t look to the past...”

“Wait a minute. I resent this attack...”

“We need to appeal to younger people...”

“Hold on. Hold on.” Hartman turns to Duckett. “Let Ms. Campbell speak.”

“The Social Democrats will run the same old guy they ran last time. We shouldn’t face Joe Clark with the same campaign we ran in 2030. We need to show the electorate that we can adapt to changing times. We shouldn’t start a new campaign with an old strategy.”

“Let’s focus on your individual campaigns. Reverend Duckett, you’re running against Assemblywoman Stephanie Brandt. She first won her seat in a narrow win against your wife. How do things look for you?”

“Things look good, Steve. Beta City is one of the most Conservative States in the Andromeda Islands. Every Assemblyman in Beta City is Conservative, except for Stephanie Brandt. Our campaign will work to rectify that situation.”

Hartman turns to Campbell.

“How’s your campaign, Ms. Campbell?”

“Our Assemblywoman, Regina Campo, started out as a Conservative. She’s now a Social Democrat who has more in common with Andromeda City than she does with East Portsmouth. We have the funding and the grass roots organization to run what I think will be a successful campaign.”

“Good luck to you both. With Lorna Campbell and Rev. Carter Duckett, I’m Steve Hartman and this is Andromeda Conservative Media.”

2032 Conservative Conference
Palermo Stadium, Palermo State
Tuesday, July 13, 2032

ACM correspondent Greg Dodd stands on the floor of Palermo Stadium. A number of delegates arrive in anticipation of the evening festivities. Most of the delegations present appear to support current Conservative leader Joe Rutherford.

Image
Greg Dodd is a morning personality on Andromeda Conservative Television.

“After a series of key announcements, the choice for Conservative leader has become more clear as two major contenders withdrew from the race earlier today.”

Cut to Ross Ewing in the Palermo Stadium Conference room. Dodd voices over Ewing’s appearance.

Image
Ross Ewing endorsed Joe Rutherford.

“At noon today, Shadow Treasury Minister Ross Ewing announced that he was withdrawing from the Conservative race.”

“It is of vital importance that the Conservative Party go into this election with a clear vision for the future. Joe Rutherford offers us that vision.”

Dodd voices over Ewing’s announcement.

“The Vice Presidential nominee two years ago, Ross Ewing broke from his former running mate, Alonzo Brown, in endorsing Joe Rutherford. It would be a preview of things to come.”

Cut to Alonzo Brown in the Conference room. Dodd voices over Brown’s announcement.

“A few hours later, Alonzo Brown himself made an announcement, flanked by his wife, Thelma, his chief lieutenant, Donnie Kurtz and members of the Beta City delegation.”

Image
Alonzo Brown withdraws from the Conservative leadership race.

“As much as I would like to contest the Conservative leadership, I must acknowledge that my health would serve as an unnecessary distraction from the Conservative campaign in 2032. There are several good men and women who could capably lead the Conservative Party at this time...”

“While Reverend Brown didn’t endorse any specific candidates, his withdrawal makes the floor vote a likely clash between Current Conservative leader Joe Rutherford, Former Palermo Governor Athena Coleman and Assemblyman Rufus Boutwell. Assemblyman Dominic Ball is also in the leadership race. Back to you, Steve.”

ACM Host Steve Hartman sits in the ACM skybox two Conservative luminaries to briefly discuss what happened.

With us today are Assemblyman Edgar Lynch of St. Paul and former Assemblyman Rodney Case of Portsmouth to discuss both the announcements and the ramifications on the leadership race. First, what does Ross Ewing’s withdrawal mean, Rod?”

Image
Edgar Lynch’s father, Vernon Lynch, was the Conservative Presidential nominee in 2010.

“Honestly, not much. Ross Ewing wasn’t as much of a contender as he was two years ago. His support was pivotal for Alonzo Brown clinching the nomination two years ago. His withdrawal will be a wash this time around.”

Image
Rodney Case lost his last Assembly election to current First Lady Linda Clark.

“Brown’s decision helps Rutherford more than anyone else. Ewing represented the purely economic wing of the Conservative Party. This time around, that bloc was divided between Ewing, Ball and Joe Rutherford.”

“The bigger surprise was Alonzo Brown’s withdrawal from the race, although you personally didn’t think so, Ed?”

“There have been rumors about Reverend Brown’s health since he suffered a heart attack last year. His campaign wasn’t as vigorous as it was in 2030, and there are two younger candidates from the Evangelical side. The Evangelicals weren’t united like they were last year.”

“Alonzo Brown was the heart and soul of the Conservative campaign last year, but his base is divided this time. It’s certainly a boost for Athena Coleman and Rufus Boutwell.”

“So, it’s now a three-way race?”

“I’d say it’s more a two-and-a-half-way race. Joe Rutherford is for all intents and purposes, the nominee. Athena Coleman may give him a good run, but I don’t see anything that stops Rutherford at this point.”

“I agree with Ed. It will likely be a two-way race between between Joe Rutherford and Athena Coleman. Rutherford has the organization while Coleman will have the Evangelical vote and an appeal with women and young people. It should be interesting.”

“Indeed. With Edgar Lynch and Rodney Case, I’m Steve Hartman. We’ll be right back after these messages.”

ACM correspondent Greg Dodd stands on the floor of Palermo Stadium. A number of delegates arrive in anticipation of the Tuesday evening festivities. Most of the delegations present appear to support current Conservative leader Joe Rutherford.

“We have Breaking News coming from the Conservative. Former Palermo Governor Athena Coleman made a key announcement from the Conference room here at Palermo Stadium that changed the course of the Conservative campaign.”

Cut to Athena Coleman.

Image
Athena Coleman endorses Joe Rutherford.

“We, as Conservatives, should do everything possible to stand together going into the General Election. A contentious floor fight tomorrow would weaken us as a party.”

Greg Dodd voices over parts of Coleman’s announcement.

“Evangelical leaders Alonzo Brown and Donnie Kurtz stood with Coleman during her announcement, making it clear that she spoke for the vast majority of the Evangelical community in the Andromeda Conservative Party.”

“We should stand united behind the man who will lead us to victory in November. We, as Evangelicals, should stand behind Conservative leader Joe Rutherford.”

“Assemblywoman Athena Coleman drops out of the race and all but ensures that Joe Rutherford will win the nomination tomorrow. Back to you, Steve.”

Steve Hartman sits in the ACM sky box with two panelists for a short discussion.

“With me to discuss the Coleman announcement is Donnie Kurtz, the Shadow Minister of Justice and Lorna Campbell, President of the College Conservatives of Andromeda. Mr. Kurtz, you were there during Governor Coleman’s announcement. What brought this on?”

Image
Donald Kurtz of Beta City is the Shadow Minister of Justice.

“I take Governor Coleman at her word. She wants the Conservative Party to be united. The mainstream media loves to see us divided into factions. They keep promoting this rivalry between the Beta City faction and the St. Paul faction. Our party isn’t just Evangelicals and Mormons. We are a national party and we will represent the nation once we take power in November.”

“Are you sure that the Vice Presidential nod wasn’t a consideration?”

“I can’t honestly say it wasn’t, but even if it was, you couldn’t find a better ticket to take us into the fall campaign.”

“Miss Campbell, what would you think of Assemblyman Coleman being on the ticket?”

Image
Lorna Campbell is a candidate for the Assembly from East Portsmouth.

“I like the idea. Governor Coleman turned Palermo from a swing state to Conservative. She has an electrifying personality. She has a following with women and with young people. She would definitely be an asset to the fall campaign.”

“You were with Joe Rutherford during the announcement. How did his campaign take the news?”

“We were ecstatic, Steve. I don’t want to say too much, but I can say that there was relief. I can also say that the Rutherford campaign is seriously considering Athena Coleman as the Vice Presidential nominee.”

“Now, there are still two other contenders: Rufus Boutwell and Dominic Ball.”

Kurtz rolls his eyes. Campbell smiles as if to suppress a laugh.

“Steve, Rufus Boutwell has no chance. Aside from Boutwell, most of us in the Beta City delegation are behind Rutherford.”

“I can say the same for Dominic Ball. Most of the Conservatives in his home state are behind Joe Rutherford. He hasn’t run much of a campaign.”

“Lorna Campbell and Donnie Kurtz, thanks for stopping by.”

“Thank you.”

2032 Conservative Conference
Palermo Stadium, Palermo State
Thursday, July 15, 2032
9:00 pm

After Conservative Conference Delegates voted overwhelmingly in favor of nominating Joe Rutherford for President, former Vice President Glen Becker was welcomed to the Conference Stage. Glen Becker served as Vice President from 2014 to 2015 under Randy Godwin. Becker is also the only Mormon to ever serve as either President or Vice President of the Allied States.

Although Becker hasn’t served in the Assembly in over a decade, he is still popular in Conservative circles. Becker hosts a radio talk show on Andromeda Conservative Radio. He comes up to the stage and waves to the crowd before speaking.

Image
Glen Becker served as Vice President from 2014 to 2015.

“Ladies and Gentlemen. Convention delegates. It’s been a long time.”

The convention cheers the former Vice President.

“Eighteen years ago, I was a part of a successful Conservative campaign. Now, because of what has happened today, I have been inspired to become a part of this campaign. I want to thank the delegates for choosing a candidate who will lead us to victory in November.”

The convention cheers. Becker appears as if he’s about to lose his composure.

“So,... I wasn’t planning to do this... As of today, I’m announcing my candidacy for the Assembly of the Allied States.”

The convention is surprised.

“This is how inspired I’ve been by what I’ve seen tonight. But this night isn’t about me. So now, I want to introduce a man who needs no introduction. I give you the next President of the Allied States, Joe Rutherford.”

Joe Rutherford comes on stage, shaking Glen Becker’s hand before giving his speech.

“Thank you, Mr. Vice President. To the delegates of the Conservative Conference, the Conservative Party and the people of the Allied States, I accept your nomination.”

Image
Joe Rutherford is the Conservative nominee.

The crowd goes wild.

“Before my remarks, I would like to make a small request. I ask the delegates to accept the nomination of Assemblywoman Athena Coleman for the Vice Presidency of the Allied States.”

The Conference delegates second the nomination.

“Conservatives have made great gains during the past few years. We hold a majority of State Councils. We also have the organization we need to win. We will run a national campaign and we will win.”

Image
Athena Coleman is now Joe Rutherford’s running mate.

Conference delegates cheer.

“The ground work was established two years ago. I want to thank my predecessor, Alonzo Brown, for his efforts in 2030. He gave us a firm foundation for us to build on. We also enter the fall campaign with a coordinated message against Joe Clark, Leonard Lawrence and the Social Democrats.”

The crowd cheers. They don’t like President Clark. They especially don’t like Leonard Lawrence.

“Joe Clark will have to defend Clark care just as election season begins. Voters forced to purchase government health insurance won’t vote for the Social Democrats. Voters who will see their tax rates go up won’t vote for Social Democrats. Voters who value freedom of religion won’t vote for the Party of Leonard Lawrence.”

Conference delegates cheer. Andromeda Conservative Media has done an expose’ on Vice President Leonard Lawrence’s poor church attendance.

“The Treaty of Portsmouth guarantees the freedom of religion for every Andromedan. That freedom remains in jeopardy every day that ‘Commodore’ Leonard Lawrence remains a heartbeat away from the Presidency.”

Conference delegates jeer when they hear Leonard Lawrence’s name.

“We must do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen, and we will.”

Rutherford’s wife comes on stage as well as several Conservative luminaries.

“I thank you for the confidence you’ve places in me. God bless you and May God Bless the Allied States of the Andromeda Archipelago.”

The meeting house is full and there are spectators standing outside. David Newton stands in front of the congregation waiting for his young bride to walk down the aisle. Officiating over the wedding is Bishop Joshua Merkley, the Ward President. Merkley also happens to be the current Minister of Education in St. Paul.

Many of the guests are there to see both David Newton, the Head of the Andromeda LDS Church and Joe Rutherford, the Conservative nominee for President of the Allied States. Rutherford became the Conservative nominee just over a week ago.

As the bride walks in, escorted by her father, the congregation all stand. Many of them will see her for the first time.

Elizabeth Hubbard is the eldest grandchild of Ron Hubbard. Ron Hubbard served as President of the Andromeda LDS Church until he died in 2020. Hubbard’s particular brand of Mormonism is practiced by the Andromeda LDS Church to this day.

Elizabeth Hubbard is a High School Social Studies Teacher. She served as both President of the University of St. Paul Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was also a two-time contestant in the Miss Andromeda Pageant as well as the youngest current member of the St. Paul State Council. Her father, Ronald Hubbard III, the current Governor of St. Paul State, also serves as second counselor to the President of the LDS Church.

Hubbard is a young bride compared to David Newton. She attended high school with Newton’s son, Charles. Her father escorts her to the altar where she stands next to Dave Newton, who is about the same age as her father.

“Please be seated.”

Bishop Merkley begins the ceremony.

“We are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in matrimony. If anyone here knows of any reason why this man and this woman should not be wed together, speak now or forever hold your peace.”

A baby cries. Newton turns in the direction of the crying. A couple of ushers escort the baby and her mother out of the sanctuary.

“David Wayne Newton, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do.”

“Elizabeth Mae Hubbard, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do.”

A young ring bearer walks over to Newton with a ring fastened to a pillow. Newton takes the ring.

“Recite after me Mr. Newton: With this ring, I thee wed.”

“With this ring, I thee wed.”

Newton carefully placed the ring on Hubbard’s finger.

“By the power vested in me by the Andromeda LDS Church, the State of St. Paul and the Allied States of the Andromeda Archipelago, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

Newton gently kisses his new bride. After the kiss, Merkley concludes.

“Mr. Newton, I want to thank you for giving me the privilege of presiding over this ceremony on this wonderful day. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Mr. And Mrs. David Wayne Newton.”

A band in the balcony plays Felix Mendelsson’s Wedding March. David and Elizabeth Newton walk out of the church. They wave at choice parishioners as they leave.
