The official statement announcing the firing said the decision had been made “in light of new information about misconduct by Juan David Freixa that has emerged in the past few days.” In an interview, one of the company’s four board members, said it had been brought to their attention that Mr. Freixa had violated the company’s code of conduct at some point in the past week, but he would not specify what the violation was.
Mr. Freixa had been notified of his termination by email Tuesday evening. The action was taken by Cristóbal Andrade, Arturo Graciani and Raúl Zorita. A fourth board member, Aaron Montenegro, is set to resign on Saturday.
Internal Conflicts
The sexual harassment allegations uncovered stretched back decades and came from former employees of Grupo Bancanet and Banco del Sur, the previous company that Mr. Freixa founded. Bancanet sent the company scrambling to do damage control outlining the fallout in an email to Mr. Freixa’s legal adviser, Pablo Feliciano.
“Many companies are giving Juan David’s money back,” he wrote on Monday morning, “Women’s rights organizations are offended by his actions and are now calling for him to be fired.”
Pablo Feliciano, legal adviser for Mr. Freixa told the company’s board on Thursday that Mr. Freixa was planning to follow through with a lawsuit, and that board members could expect “more and different reporting” that would include “photos of several of the accusers in very friendly poses with Freixa after his alleged misconduct.”
Arturo Graciani, Bancanet board member, voiced anger in an email response to Mr. Feliciano, saying his approach and public comments were “definitely fanning the flames and compounding the problem”. Graciani added: “This is not the time for Bancanet to appear defiant or indignant; It is time to repair, heal, accept responsibility and recover.”
For the past week, many women frustrated with an industry that seems stuck perpetually sexualizing and mistreating women, had been watching closely to see where the revelations would lead. The firing of Freixa was considered a victory by many women's rights groups. Marta Ferraz, activist and founder of the Almas Unidas foundation said that the event “is going to scare any man in a position of power using his status to take advantage of young women.”
