Miersan National leader Aleksandra Wojdyla

At the Zjednoczeni leadership convention tonight, former Minister-President and current leader of the Miersan National Party, Aleksandra Wojdyla, was selected as the presidential nominee for Zjednoczeni with no opposition among Zjednoczeni's parties. This move was followed by a decision to run specific numbers of candidates to guarantee the most seats for the anti-Naprzód front.

Aleksandra Wojdyla said that "today, the Miersan National Party, Nowoczesność and Razem! have all agreed to field a common candidate under a common platform. With the support of Nowoczesność and Razem!, I have been able to secure the nomination as the presidential candidate to represent Zjednoczeni [in the coming election]."

"We Miersans must band together to save our democracy, to halt the anti-democratic efforts of Naprzód to turn us into a new Wojdyla dictatorship, and to address the long and consistent neglect of minorities across the Miersan nation," she said. "This is why that I am delighted to not only accept the nomination [to run as Zjednoczeni's presidential nominee] but name Pawle Pyrchalayszwyly as my running mate, so that minorities across the Miersan nation will feel represented in our government."

Aleksandra Wojdyla said that "as per our agreement, we have decided to field ninety-three candidates from the Miersan National Party, thirty from Nowoczesność, and twelve from Razem! in the upcoming general election, and we will not run them against each other so that we have the best chance possible to kick Naprzód to the curb and save Miersan democracy!"

"If we can do this," she said, "we can make Miersa better than what it has been under the Naprzód government. And I, for one, am looking forward to showing all of Miersa how we fight."

More as the story develops.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Hepatitis C tests 2018-2020 ineffective
2021-06-22T06:30Z
Via Dezevauni Federal Health Service

This is a public announcement regarding hepatitis C test results received between 2018-02-20 and 2020-08-30. In many states, the pathology laboratories which tests were assessed at used faulty equipment or procedure in this period, with the result that those who should have tested positive for hepatitis C tested negative. Those whose test results are dated to this period should go and get tested again at their earliest convenience, if they have not been tested since; this can be done for free at any public hospital or clinic, and no other action is required.

The hepatitis C test involves the drawing of blood, which is sent to a laboratory to test it, with the results being returned some days or weeks later. The issue arises in that returned results may have been incorrect; no harm has resulted from the way in which blood was drawn.

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease that can have serious consequences; those who may have had inaccurate test results should get tested to preserve both their own health, and the health of those around them. However, the majority of tests come back negative, and anyone who still has hepatitis C as a result of it being undetected and untreated from that period will be experiencing it chronically, which is to say in long-term form, where the damage is cumulative, and generally only serious after some years. It is unlikely that you test positively for hepatitis C if you are getting a makeup test, but if you do, your doctors will be able to further recommend a course of action; it is likely that this will include contacting those whom you may have transmitted the disease to so that they may be tested. Please also let your doctor know if you are experiencing or have experienced symptoms relevant to hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is a viral disease, mainly transmitted sexually, or through the transmission of blood, and primarily affecting the liver. It is not transmitted by superficial or passing contact, and widespread transmission should not be feared. It should not be confused with other common hepatitides, such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B. Symptoms in the first few years of a chronic infection may be mild, and difficult to pin down: they include fatigue, abdominal swelling, and changes or general decline in health of the skin. It is very easy not to know that one has hepatitis C, especially if not picked up at an acute phase of infection. Left untreated, hepatitis C is serious, and can result in liver failure, even death. If detected, treatment can be applied, which is generally easy, and highly successful; over 90% of hepatitis C cases can be treated with only or mainly antivirals.

Because hepatitis C is symptomatic, many of those who tested negative to hepatitis C from 2018 to 2020 in Dezevau have been correctly diagnosed through means other than those tests. Some tests from this period, furthermore, did in fact return correct results, having not been affiliated with incorrect methods or faulty equipment. Those who have been tested or treated for hepatitis C since that time do not need to be tested, and should have no concerns as a result of this announcement.

It is unclear precisely how many people will need to be tested for hepatitis C, but the number is likely in the tens of thousands. Those seeking to be tested are recommended to contact their local hospital to make an appointment, and to be on time; if delays result from a large number of people seeking to be tested, patience is requested. You should not give up an appointment because of long wait times, nor will harm come to your health as a result of testing delays.

Campaigning begins in Paretia: Some names to know
The unexpected snap election has begun an election season for August 4, here are some of the party leaders to know that will be on the ballot.
Ana Delgadinho (@anadelgadinosaur) | 22 June 2021 | Precea

Paretia:
Image
Esmeralda Falcão
A veteran politician and union leader, Falcão has lead the Social Democrats through it's longest drought without power. Despite gaining seats in the previous two elections, her party has been unable to take power as a minority government due to the Conservative Union, Patron League, and others forming a coalition against them.

The party has said that it's ideology is centered around social democracy and advocates for progressivism and fighting for a fair and free Paretia. Much of it's messaging says it wants to give Paretian a new change after 10 years of conservative leadership.

Falcão seeks to bring the Pink Wave into Paretia after Halivar's victory over in Estmere. As of current her party is topping the polls, just barely, ahead of the Patron League. They see the divide in the right-wing as an advantage in order to gain a enough seats to form a majority coalition with the SPIT and Greens.

Image
Isilda Cerqueira
Now the "leader" of the Patron League in the snap election, Cerqueira seeks to form a new government without the backlash of the more moderate and centrist parties that plagued her previous government. A former radio host and was once leader of the anti-EC wing of the Conservative Union until 2019. She is very euclosceptic and many have likened her and the Patron League to the Tribunes of Etruria.

The Patron League uses populist rhetoric in all of it's messaging, it refers to the Paretian elite as "as comparsas" (the cronies), the pro-EC right as the "os traidores" (the traitors), and the Paretian SD as "falsos socialistas" (false socialists). It refers to it's supporters themselves as "a revolta" (the uprising).

Currently in second on most polls, though just barely behind the SD, Cerqueira is extremely confident about the election. Stating the party has a strategy to sweep the polls and "wipe out" all of their opponents. She has stated she hopes to ally with the Alternative Party.

Image
Alexandre Nobreza
The new leader of the Conservative Union, he is a new face to the party, becoming a Senator only in the 2017 election. Nobreza has recently ousted Marmeleiro as the leader of the party, citing that he has "poorly lead the party to a record low". He has stated that in light of the polls showing the party collapsing in size, his goal isn't to defeat the Patron League or Social Democrats, but is instead to keep his party alive and give the Paretian right-wing a "honest" and "decent" choice that doesnt't cater to far-right populism.

The party plans on trying to stay alive in the election, holding on to their seats as much as possible against an almost certain decline in power as the Patron League appears to have become the new leading party of the Paretian right.

Image
Horácio Pacau
Leader of the new Alternative Party, Pacau seeks to continue to grow in the election. Being a party founded on eucloscepticism, he has found a close friendship with the far-right Patron League, despite the party calling itself a "big-tent" choice. His party's biggest talking point is the advocation for direct democracy, which Pacau believes will make Paretia "free from bureaucratic EC rule".

For the snap election he wants to continue expanding his party and has began to try and take voters from all different parties in order to do so. He believes that this election will end up in a positive for the Alternative Party. He is likely to ally with the Patron League if they do win.

Image
Salomão Andrade
Salomão Andrade has been the leader of the Paretian Section of the Workers' International since 2019. Leading what is the oldest continuously running party in the country, it has seen some changes from it's more radical past. Today it takes a more democratic approach to advocating for councilism. He believes that the Social Democrats are too soft on "capitalist organizations" like the EC and others.

His party has seen a growth in popularity within the last year as is polling usually in fourth place. If the party does end up with between 6%-9% of seats according to polls, it would be the largest the party has ever been since the early 1970s.

Image
Nicole Barboza
Head of the centrist Liberals of Paretia, Barboza has seen a decline in party popularity in recent years. Her party wants to allow a middle ground in the country and believes that the Euclosceptic right is a "threat to Paretian and Euclean democracy". The party seeks to allow a voice of centrism in the Assembleia Nacional as it appears more polarized voices are becoming more popular.

With polls mostly showing around 2%-3%, Barboza has stated that she believes that her party will go either way, up or down, but it is unlikely they will be able to compete with the Patron League or Social Democrats.

Image
Joel Campos
The oldest of the party leaders, Campos has lead the sotirian democrat Catholics for Liberty for 14 years. The party usually is seen as moderate-right to center-right. It has historically usually placed in fourth or filth in elections but this time it is different, garnering it's biggest election loss in 2020 as the Patron League and Alternative Party had taken many of it's seats.

The party is polling similarly to Barboza's LdP at around 3%. The party seeks to give yet another choice for the divided Paretian right, especially for Solarian Catholics who refuse to support any far-right candidates.

Image
Perpétua Venâncio
Leader of the Green Party of Paretia since 2012, Venâncio seeks to keep Green politics alive in Paretia, usually allied with the Social Democrats, they seek to stay alive in this election. Polling has shown a drastic decrease in support for the party, likely many of it's voters are now supporting the SPIT or SD.

If the SD and SPIT have success in the election, they will likely form a coalition government with the Green in order to keep out the heavily divided right-wing and center from gaining control.

Regional Parties
Salvador Modesto Esmeiran Party - Generally conservative, focused on allowing Esmeiran-related issues be heard in the government
Roser de Fontanel Tosuton Front - Generally progressive, focused on keeping Tosuton-related issues heard
Guilherme Brilha Party for Luzelese Interests - Generally conservative, focused on having a voice for Luzela
Raúl Torres Luzelese Dominion Party - Generally conservative, focused on expanding Luzelese influence in government, especially the Senate
Xusta das Criadas Vicisan Party - Generally progressive, focused on keeping a Vicisan voice in government, despite being a small minority

National Electoral Commission to deny Zjednoczeni's request
Image
Justice Minister Szymon Krynicki delivering a speech (file photo)

CITY OF ŻOBRODŹ - Today, Justice Minister Szymon Krynicki officially announced the decision by the Ministry of Justice and the National Electoral Commission to deny Zjednoczeni's request to be listed on ballots for the 2021 general election, arguing that Zjednoczeni was "so dominated by the Miersan National Party" that the proposed electoral alliance "is an attempt by the Miersan National Party to try and sneak around its poor reputation."

Justice Minister Szymon Krynicki said that "after having reviewed the paperwork [filed by the Miersan National Party, Nowoczesność, and Razem!] to have the Zjednoczeni electoral alliance listed on ballots for the upcoming general election, the Ministry of Justice and the National Electoral Commission has been pleased to inform the petitioning parties that their designation may not be listed."

Krynicki explained that "we have found that given that Zjednoczeni is so dominated by the Miersan National Party, with most officials in Zjednoczeni being officials within the Miersan National Party, and given that the two smaller parties within the so-called 'electoral alliance' lack any representation [within the National Assembly], it is clear that this is an attempt by the Miersan National Party to try and sneak around its poor reputation in the Miersan Sotirian Republic."

"While we have been informed of the agreement to not compete against each other, and to only field a certain amount of candidates, we believe that this is not a good enough reason for this so-called 'electoral alliance' to have their name be listed on ballots," Krynicki said. "Therefore, the National Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Justice have decided to refuse the request by the three petitioning parties, and rule that their names will appear on the ballot."

"If the petitioning parties would like to have the name 'Zjednoczeni' used as an affiliation for all candidates in the coming general election, the three parties will need to merge into a single party with that name, and have it be registered with the National Electoral Commission," Krynicki said. "We are more than willing to accept the request if there is sufficient proof that they have developed a united hierarchy and organisation, and intend to maintain the party beyond this election."

"Alternatively, they are welcome to try to appeal the ruling to the courts," Krynicki said, "although I doubt that the courts would be sympathetic to the plight of the petitioning parties."

Abramovs Infrastructure Plan Runs Into Difficulty

Image

Novigrad - The Interior Infrastructure Revitalization Bill, introduced by President Abramov a little over a month ago, has encountered its first major issue. Part of the infrastructure bill called for the modernizing of rail lines within the interior, however, it recently came to the government attention that several sections of the interiors rail lines are narrow gauge. These lines have gauges that are 600mm wide, this greatly differs from the standard rail gauge, which is 1435mm wide. Ravnia has not used 600mm gauge tracks as the standard gauge since the 1940's, making this discovery very concerning. Plans to modernize the rail lines are now expected to take much longer, as these narrow gauge tracks will have to be accounted for.

Plans to overhaul the interiors roads have also hit difficulties, as many roads within the interior are little more than lines of dirt carved in the earth. The roads that are paved, including the interiors Central Highway, suffer from a multitude of problems. From potholes, cracked pavement, and weak supporting infrastructure, the overhaul of the interiors roads are also expected to take longer than expected.

These issues, which may not have been made clear had the Interior Infrastructure Revitalization Bill not been passed, have highlighted the serious divide between Ravnias urbanized and wealthy coast, and its impoverished and rural interior. President Abramovs commitment to righting this divide will surely earn him praise from citizens within the interior, though this campaign of modernization is expected to put some strain on the governments budget. Only time will tell if this attempt to bring the interior up to the same standards as the coast will be successful and worth the cost.

PRESSURE MOUNTING AGAINST Mac PIARAIS OVER POOR SHOWING IN PROVINCAL ELECTIONS

Image
Liberty's embattled leader. Pádraig Mac Piarais, is losing support due to another election defeat.

By RÓNÁN Ó DUBHGHAILL

24 June 2021 at 13:47 p.m. EST

The Liberty Party's controversial leader, Pádraig Mac Piarais, is facing fresh calls for his resignation amid the aftermath of the party's poor performance at the provincial elections held earlier this month.

Rivals of the party's right-wing leader are urging him to step aside and allow for someone fresh to lead the struggling party. Liberty has been left flailing since it was rocked by scandals two years ago, resulting in a landslide defeat at the 2019 snap election that the party has yet to recover from.

Among those calling for his resignation are Mac Piarais' regular critics. Nicolás Coimín, the former Ceann Comhairle, has been joined by ex-ministers Iúile Rós and Roibeard Ó Catháin in demanding Liberty's embattled leader step aside. However, other senior party figures have begun to indicate they lack confidence in Mac Piarais' leadership. Among the fresh voices is Áine Nic Gille, who serves as the Second Leas-Cheann Comhairle in the Tionól.

Nic Gille is joined by other members of the party's parliamentary group who are indicating their unease with Mac Piarais' continued leadership.

"We have faced defeat after defeat with him. We are bleeding in the polls and there is no end in sight, the time for him to go is now" one Liberty TC said of Mac Piarais. The lawmaker spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to be candid.

Liberty took second on the 12 June elections to the transitional councils for the five new provinces. However, it is a distant second. The Social Democrats won 72 of 200 seats while Liberty trailed far behind with 29. Close behind to Liberty were the Centre Party with 27 seats and National Party with 23. The Caldish Democrats also celebrated a strong showing, as did minor parties. All indicate problems for Liberty, which needs to recover from its worst ever electoral performance before next year's general election.

Mac Piarais has lead Liberty through three elections, all of which ended in defeats. Polling shows the National Party almost on par with Liberty, while other parties such as Centre and the Democrats have also gained at its expense.

Sources within the party's parliamentary group indicate it could soon be curtains for Mac Piarais. However, his allies indicate he has no intention of stepping aside.

"[Mac Piarais] is in this for the long haul. The party would be better served by its members showing support for their leader, as opposed to offering snide and anonymous comments to the press" party chair Caoilinn Ní Bhraonáinh said when reached for comment.

Decision time for the capital - what you need to know about s'Holle's election
s'HOLLE VOTES 2021 • Parties brace for the climax of the last ballot before the federal election in September
Jurren Maas • 25 June 2021 • s'Holle
Image
The frontrunners for the city's next Mayor-Governor: incumbent Marijne Tijhoff (SAP), Lise Xi (Groen) and Zeynep Erkin (VDP)

s'Holle's 1 million voters are heading to the polls today in a crucial electoral test of the major political parties - the last before the federal election in September.

At stake are the 95 seats in the s'Holle Assembly and executive control of the country's largest city and third-largest region. Beyond the city limits, the results could determine the direction of travel and tone of Hennish politics heading into a summer of nationwide campaigning.

Above all, the election is seen as a crossroads for the Socialist Labour Party (SAP), who despite managing to stop the haemorrhaging of support in recent months, could still see their 86-year streak as the city's largest party come to an end. Conversely, the vote could be the breakthrough the Greens have been waiting for, challenging both the SAP and their governing partners VDP for prominence in the 23rd Assembly. Other parties will also be hoping to either gain or maintain their presence in the capital, including a number of new forces.

A brief political history of s'Holle
Since the foundation of the Third Republic and the federal system in 1935, s'Holle constitutes as one of the ten regions of Hennehouwe. Like Zilverzee, it has special status as a city region, meaning it has the elevated powers and responsibilities of both a region and a municipality (though city regions are still further divided into district councils). As a result, the head of the city's government goes by the title of Mayor-Governor - signifying their effective double duty.

Since then, the city's political landscape has been dominated by the SAP, who have consistently been the largest party in the Assembly since its inception, and have formed part of its government for all but nine years. However, the days of SAP overall majorities are long gone. The party has steadily lost its grip over the city in recent decades, and despite a temporary upward blip during the "pink wave" of the mid-2000s, it has struggled to freshen its image as voters turn to an increasingly wide range of alternatives. Its 25.4% share of the vote in the 2017 regional election was its worst result to date - winning a record low of 26 seats.

That election brought about a grand coalition between the SAP and VDP, its working majority affirmed by a confidence and supply arrangement with the Greens. Marijne Tijhoff (SAP) was re-installed as Mayor-Governor, having first been elected to the role the year prior following the resignation of her colleague, Walter Speelman. Several weeks after the city government formation, the same two parties formed government at the federal level. For this reason, the aftermath of today's election and the subsequent formation talks will be watched with keen eyes across the country.
Image

How does the election work and who's competing?
The 95 seats of the assembly are elected through proportional representation, 63 of which are elected through s'Holle's nine districts (each electing between three and twelve members), whilst the remaining 32 are allocated on a regionwide basis in a way that makes the overall result as proportional as possible. Voters are handed a single ballot and can vote for a candidate from their district, or, if the list does not have any candidates specific to that district, vote for the list overall.

There is no threshold for either district or compensatory seats, meaning the effective threshold for entry into the assembly via the regionwide seats is around 1%. The extremely low barrier means that the Assembly is often fragmented, with the number of parties represented frequently hitting double digits. In 2017, thirteen parties won at least one seat, with Future.sHolle entering the assembly on just over 7,000 votes (1.1%).

Twenty-two lists will appear on the ballot, including those of all thirteen parties who won seats in the last regional election. A further seven lists were registered but failed to gain ballot access either due to a lack of endorsements (0.1% of the number of votes cast in the previous election) or failure to submit the necessary deposits.

Similar to the election of Prime Minister on a federal level, the Mayor-Governor is by tradition the leader of the largest party in the city executive. Tijhoff will lead the s'Holle SAP into a second election, hoping to extend her leadership of the city's government for another four years. Her personal approval ratings have been shaky at best, though are currently at their highest since 2018 following her stance over Etruria's anti LGBT+ legislation. Zeynep Erkin, the leader of the regional VDP branch and the Deputy Mayor-Governor, has made no secret of her ambitions, hoping to benefit from close ties to the still-popular federal leader Eva Kaestel. However, all eyes have been on Lise Xi, the deputy leader of the Green Party, who is the party's lead candidate in the regional election. Political commentators have attributed her personal popularity and platform as a reason for the party's ascent in the city, propelling them from the fifth-largest party to potentially the city's biggest.

What are the key issues?
In a city where over one-third of its population identify as non-Hennish and where wealth disparities between districts are among the most profound in the country, the concerns of voters are as diverse as the city itself. According to a recent Holstat poll, the top issues for s'Holle voters are housing, healthcare, crime, transport and climate change. With the assembly also having municipal powers, more localised issues such as public services, education and policing also feature highly on voters' minds.

The opposition has attacked the governing parties over what they see as an "inability" to tackle the various crises facing the city. The cost of rent has increased sharply in recent years, with one of the fastest increases for any city in eastern Euclea. Combined with the rising cost of living, the issue is particularly pertinent to younger voters - a traditionally left-leaning demographic. s'Holle has also seen an increase in violent crime, with more than twenty reported knife-related attacks since the start of the year. Also prominent in the debate this election was climate change, with most parties pledging to cut the city's emissions and introduce greener initiative schemes. Predictably, the Greens stand to be the biggest benefactors of the focus on the climate, promising a "Just Transition" for s'Holle.

In a similar fashion to 2017, wider international issues have also cropped up in debate - a previously unheard of phenomena in Hennish regional votes. The domestic uproar over Etruria's anti-LGBT+ bills, and particularly the response from the city's large Etrurian population, has also played a significant role in the election. It has galvanised Etrurian s'Hollians, a key demographic for the SAP, and enthused them into political action. Concerns over another wave of mass immigration, particularly in light of the ongoing civil war in Tsabara, have also provoked discussions among politicians and the public.

Where do things stand on election day?
The final poll from MCGpeiling shows support for the SAP at 22% - an increase of 3% since early May, but still down two points from their 2017 result. It gives them a five-point advantage over the VDP and the Greens, both polling at 17%. This represents a slight fall in support for the former since May, while the upward trend for the Greens has since stalled - though it would still represent almost a doubling of support in four years. The centre-right NVP stand at 11%, which would be one of their worst performances in a s'Holle Assembly election.

There is a consensus across various pollsters over the last month also indicates that the far-right Patriot's March, who have continuously increased their vote at every election since its creation, look set to lose support for the first time. Support for The Left, traditionally strong in areas with high concentrations of working-class and immigrant populations, is also slightly down.

If those figures were to be born out in the real results, the SAP would likely breathe a sigh of relief. If there's to be any southbound spillover from Estmere's Pink Wave, it's unlikely to have arrived just yet - but a relatively strong campaign and the Etrurian crisis will have saved them from total disaster. But a first-place finish is far from certain, let alone the leadership of the executive.

It isn't just the larger parties whose aspirations may be realised (or dashed) tonight. Hopes are high for both the Euclophile Vox party and the new far-left Red Party, both of which are competing in a Hennish election for the first time. The MCGpeiling poll measures their support at 4%, and 3%, respectively, virtually guaranteeing them representation in the Assembly. Their performance at this election will be crucial in determining their prospects of winning seats in the capital and elsewhere in the federal election, where the relative threshold in s'Holle is around 4%.

Polls close at 20:00 tonight when the exit poll will be revealed. Results are expected to begin flowing in from after 21:00, with the provisional result likely to be officially declared tomorrow morning.

CAMDEN, CT — Despite earlier plans to vote on legislation today in the Fed Council that would legalize internet sports gambling nationwide, TNC leadership has postponed the vote until next week, likely failing to form a viable coalition of support.

A 2021 amendment to the Internet Safety and Regulatory Act (ISRA), the legislation would allow sports gambling online in Rizealand while subjecting it to regulation and the federal commerce tax. Currently, half of the states and two out of three indigenous nations allow some form of sports gambling. However, ISRA prohibits any gambling over the internet unless it occurs within jurisdictions that allow it.
The current 2021 amendment was passed narrowly by the House of Representatives last month with 269 votes out 535, a margin of one vote above the 268 votes required for passage. In the House, both major political coalitions were split in favor of and in opposition to the 2021 amendment.

With President Aderhall’s full weight and support behind the 2021 amendment, the Conservative Reformists, National Republicans, and Powhatan representatives were able to partner with the Democrats to pass the 2021 amendment. In order to secure the Democrats’ support, Speaker Harriet Hill and TNC Conference Chair Aidan MacCoghlan, a Conservative Reformist from Fael, included provisions in the 2021 amendment that would protect potential sports gamblers from predatory lending and other unfair practices.

Specifically, the 2021 amendment prohibits internet sports gambling sites from offering loans to gamblers at interest rates above the national average, requires sports gambling sites to conduct credit checks of users and avoid giving loans to individuals with bad credit or a proven inability to pay off debt, and gives the Federation Commerce Commission the power to license all gambling sites and enforce the provisions of the 2021 amendment.

While opposition to the 2021 amendment was unsuccessful in the House, they have made the 2021 amendment’s path to passage in the Fed Council uncertain. While the Democrats under Democrat Leader Abigail Baker, a representative from Lothicania, were able to support the 2021 amendment following the inclusion of their requested consumer protection measures, the rest of the National Progress Coalition, the Sotirian Democrats, Nehinaw’s representative, and the Socialists opposed it for a variety of reasons.

The New Democrats and Greens of the NPC, as well as the Socialists, refused to support the 2021 amendments on the grounds that they believed it did not do enough to protect consumers. Representative Lionel Baker, an independent from the Nehinaw Nation, opposed the 2021 amendment on the grounds that he feared any national legalization of gambling would hurt the gambling industry in the Nehinaw Nation. Lastly, the Sotirian Democrats broke with the TNC in opposition to the 2021 amendments on religious grounds, arguing any gambling was a society-corrupting evil that should be prohibited, not legalized.

Although the TNC’s control of the House and alliance with the Powhatan Nation’s representatives and the Democrats allowed them to successfully pass the 2021 amendments there, lack of a majority in the Fed Council makes it much more difficult here. Currently, with the same coalition of supporters as in the House, the TNC and their Powhatan/Democrat allies have 19 “yes” votes out of the Fed Council’s 38 members. Although this represents half of the Fed Council, 20 votes are required to pass any legislation in the Fed Council. Typically, during a tie in the Fed Council, the Deputy President casts the tie breaker vote and the current Deputy President is Neil Barrett, a Sotirian Democrat elected on the same ticket as President Cal Aderhall, a Conservative Reformist.
Despite being part of Aderhall’s TNC administration, Deputy President Barrett publicly stated that should he be called to break a tie on the 2021 amendment in the Fed Council, he will vote with his party in opposing the 2021 amendment.

Last week, President Aderhall and TNC Conference Chairman Jordan Watts, a councilor from Providence, tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a deal with Deputy President Barrett and the Sotirian Democrats, according to sources inside the Aderhall administration. These attempts were ultimately unsuccessful however as sources said their differences were irreconcilable with Deputy President Barrett calling his choice an “issue of faith and conscience not up for debate or compromise.”

This week, Chairman Watts and his senior leadership have instead tried to court the Nehinaw Nation’s three-member delegation, as they only need one extra vote to pass the 2021 amendment. Yesterday, sources close to Chairman Watts’ staff reported that a deal had been struck with Councilor Stephen Nootau of the Nehinaw Nation, who would be the 20th vote. However this morning during the first hour of floor debate for the 2021 amendment in the Fed Council, Councilor Nootau apparently informed Chairman Watts that he was withdrawing his support after receiving pressure back home to oppose the amendment. Rather than face defeat, Chairman Watts quickly ended debate and announced he was postponing a vote on the 2021 amendment to next week.

Before debate ended however, many of the amendment’s opponents had a chance to voice their concerns on the council floor. NPC Conference Chair and NDP Leader Samuel Price, a councilor from Assimia, stated that while the New Democrats did not necessarily oppose legalization of sports gambling as many of the states where it’s legal have NPC governments, he was concerned the amendment’s lack of “teeth” to enforce its consumer protection provisions would make it only multiply the problems it sought to solve.

Chairman Price specifically said he opposed the Federation Commerce Commission’s jurisdiction over enforcement of the 2021 amendment, noting that the FCC is both overworked and widely ineffective at regulating internet activity. “Given the FCC’s abysmal track record in handling the problems caused by tech giants like Konnect and eCart, I don’t see how we can trust them to handle the additional responsibility of regulating online gambling,” he argued. “If the TNC and their Democrat allies are serious about creating consumer-centered gaming regulations, they need to support the creation of an independent agency to regulate gaming in the Federation.”

Before debate had concluded, TNC Conference Vice Chairman and National Republican Leader Chris McCarthy, a councilor from Cahoka, responded that “creating more bureaucracy and red tape when we already have perfectly capable federal regulators is nothing short of nonsensical and wasteful.” He quipped it was a “perfect example of the NPC’s backward, big spending, big government, high taxes policy.”

While Chairman Watts’ office did not return our requests for a comment, presidential press secretary Skylar Hoffman made a brief statement to the media where she said President Aderhall remained optimistic that the 2021 amendment would pass soon. She declined however to specify if President Aderhall and the TNC will seek another deal with Nehinaw’s delegation or if they will concentrate on working with the NPC instead, simply stating negotiations remain ongoing.

OPINION - Von Hösslin didn't start identarian politics in Werania. Rasa Šimonytė did.
The popular former premier pioneered emphasising the divide between "real Weranians" and a fictionalised liberal elite that paved the road to the NKP's current divisive rhetoric.

WESTBRÜCKEN, WERANIA - Earlier this year Werania was convulsed in a national debate surrounding immigration and identity after interior minister Jörg Bullmann made comments that stated Werania was facing "demographic extinction" due to its overly liberal immigration policy. Bullmann's comments recalled the far-right conspiracy theory of the "great replacement", which came into public prominence in 2006 when the Weranian journalist Heinrich Thälmann published Who killed Werania?, a best seller that alleged that the Weranian political class had in the 1970's come to an agreement with the then-Union of Khazestan and Pardaran (the precursor to the modern Zorasani state) to accept the mass migration of Rahelian and Pardaran migrants in return for access to Zorasani oil reserves with political correctness subsequently stifling discussion on the issue.

It's tempting to see that the current government's pandering to far-right views as a symptom entirely of the incumbent leadership of the NKP based around an alliance of the party's neoconservative and populist factions with the latter making concessions on economic policy in return for the former regurgitating nationalist rhetoric particularly on identarian issues. According to liberal and leftist commentators the shift to the NKP emphasising identarian issues is a development wholly unique to the current leadership, Former premier Viktor Oberhauser last month unfavourably compared von Hösslin to his predecessor as NKP leader, Günter Schaefer, who Oberhauser lauded as being "focused on uniting Weranians and presenting a positive view of the country rather then relying on divisive rhetoric that divides communities". Journalist and political commentator Anne-Marie Keyserling further opined that von Hösslin's "pandering to xenophobes and racists" were a "farcry from the sober conservatism of Rasa Šimonytė who focused on solving problems rather then creating them".

Whilst under Šimonytė Werania was never completely at ease with its increasing multiculturalism given identarian debate such as Thälmann's polemic still impacted the political discourse it is accepted that such rhetoric remained in the purview of hard right parties such as the Democratic Alternative rather then in the mainstream. But to claim that is the case is to rewrite history as it was under Šimonytė that Werania made its exorable march towards identity politics in dominating the political discourse.

Šimonytė was perhaps better aware then most surrounding the politics of identity. Of Ruttish descent she spent much of her teenage years in Wolfsfled where she would eventually rise through the provincial NKP in that state to become its Minister-President. As a Ruttish women in a party dominated by Cislanian men she even at her earliest was keen to project an image of herself as a materteral figure who as a "wife, mother and daughter" epitomised the image of conservative Werania, of the rural volk divorced from the complexities of urban life. It was an image that Šimonytė carefully cultivated in her numerous election campaigns that made her the darling of "provincial Werania" continuing through to her election as NKP leader in 1996.

The cultivation of such an image was boosted by the backdrop of the politics of the late 1990's. The then-Weranian premier, Wolfgang Löscher, was a social democrat often lampooned as representative of a wealthy, self-centred Westbrücken elite who had nothing but contempt for "traditional Werania". Šimonytė responded to this by promoting the idea that there was a majority of Weranians who worked for "acquired rights" (such as healthcare and pensions) but that the government under the social democrats had redistributed these to citizens less deserving - immigrants, the unemployed and those whose situation was as a result of their own "moral failings" such as single mothers. At the time this position was placed in essentially anti-tax or neoliberal terms - that the NKP under Šimonytė was primarily against new social programmes as it promoted economic liberalism in lieu of the welfare state. This may have been advocated by the right-wing think tanks that coalesced around the party but the messaging from Šimonytė was clear - that her party represented the interests of "real Weranians" and that the left only advocated for the interests of "them".

The emergence of further right parties to the NKP - first the Democratic Alternative under Egon Geisel, later the even more extreme Weranic Völkisch Freedom Party under Albrecht Ströher, - meant that open xenophobia and racism remained on the margins to the relief of progressives. But this had several unintended side effects. With the far-right voicing racist rhetoric Šimonytė and her government were given carte blanche to voice divisive rhetoric before claiming to unite the nation as the more moderate voice in the debate. In effect, Šimonytė and her lieutenants effectively normalised such discourse by both condemning and co-opting it, separating her "real Weranians" from the far-right in rhetoric alone.

This was compounded by a left that seemed almost entirely ignored such issues, either due to a self-censoring political correctness or clinging blindly to a notion that everyone was Weranian first no matter their race or religion. Concerns of Weranian identity thus where dismissed as the rantings of racists who just didn't understand "modern Werania" even as the NKP in government relentlessly projected the image that it and it alone represented "real Weranians".

Nevertheless Šimonytė by the end of her term was perceived to have failed to placate this growing identitarianism. Her government often presented itself as standing up for a traditionalist view of Werania but its policies showed that it was far more concerned with neoliberal reforms. If it did delve into identarian issues it was not to the increasing mass of those disillusioned with politics who were turning to the far-right but to that ancient bastion of NKP support, Catholic provincials. As such when Šimonytė left office the fourth largest party in the Bundestag was the neo-functionalist OVFP.

The move towards more open identarian politics came after Šimonytė left office and the NKP were ousted from power in 2011. The new social democratic led governments soon were soon accused by the right-wing press and more extremist parties as being solely concerned with ethnic minorities and LGBT+ individuals whipping up a climate of division that the governing parties seemed unprepared or unwilling to confront. But the real change came within the NKP - after years of dog whistling and promising to protect voters "way of life" the party decided to claw back support from the far-right it would both have to be more explicit and keep its promises.

The impotency of Šimonytė's supporters in preventing this shift within the NKP shows the extent to which this divisive rhetoric is institutionalised within the NKP. Notably as well Šimonytė has been all but silent regarding the shift in the NKP, focusing solely on promoting pro-Eucleanism rather then have to deal with how her legacy has affected Weranian politics. Šimonytė at her zenith was said to dominate Weranian politics - and she does in a fashion, albeit in a way her advocates may be uncomfortable in admitting.

KEISI MAYOR TAKAMASA HIROTANI DEAD AT 76
Municipal gov't says cause of death was cardiac arrest;
long-entrenched mayor had been reelected in March

Image
A file photograph of Takamasa Hirotani speaking at a conference in Morwall in 2014.

June 28, 2021 | Sunemasa Kusanagi in Keisi | The municipal government of Keisi has confirmed that Takamasa Hirotani, the city's mayor for fifteen years and only a few months into his fourth term, died in office early this morning, listing the cause of death as cardiac arrest resulting from coronary artery disease. He was 77 years old.

Takamasa Hirotani was born on February 28, 1944 in Isikawa. He graduated from the University of Keisi with a degree in economics, spending some years there as an academic assistant, before moving to Euclea to act as a research assistant at the University of Morwall in Estmere until 1978. He returned to Senria shortly thereafter, formally joining the Aikokutou in 1981 and becoming a prominent defender of the economic policies of Kiyosi Haruna in print and on television. He was a member of the National Assembly from 1993 to 2003, spending the three following years as a "legal consultant" for Senrian corporations.

He was first elected Mayor of Keisi in 2006. He was reelected in 2011, 2016, and 2021, and gained a reputation as being politically unassailable after surviving several scandals, including regular criticism of his close ties to major keiretu, a 2009 remark that women were "biologically unsuited for the nuance of politics", and the 2018 allegation that he had used ¥7.2 million in public funds to purchase a vacation home in Takemori Prefecture, through the continued backing of Aikokutou party leadership.

In addition to his scandals, he was known for his efforts to draw tourists to the city and bolster its role as a global financial center, and for his efforts to merge the city of Keisi and Keisi Prefecture, an effort that culminated in a 2017 referendum which failed by less than two percentage points.

While he was sometimes discussed as a potential national leader for the Aikokutou, he never sought leadership of the party or the Senrian premiership, evidently satisfied with his preeminence over politics in the national capital.

He is survived by his wife, Satiyo, and their five children.

It is currently unclear how the office will be filled for the remainder of his five-year term, which began this March. The municipal government of Keisi has confirmed that his deputy, Nobuhiro Akiba, will serve as interim mayor in the near future; with the bulk of the term left, however, it is presently unclear if the city will have Akiba serve as mayor until 2026 or call for early elections.

Gaullica and Caldia partner in "Buy Euclean Steel" initiative.
Both governments have pledged to introduce legislation at the national level to encourage the priority and growth of domestic steel industries.

Verlois, Gaullica.

The Premiers of Gaullica, Mathéo Turzyna and Caldia, Stiofán Mac Suibhne, have jointly announced a 'Buy Euclean Steel' initiative at a press-conference at the Saint-Calais steel mill. The steel mill, one of Euclea's largest, employs over 1,700 people and has been in operation since the late 18th century.

Turzyna and Suibhne, both of whom have represented and managed steel unions in their histories, the National Federation of Metalworkers (FNM) and the Association of Ironworkers and Miners (COIM) respectively, agreed that a "substantial change" in the way Euclean construction and industries used steel.

Premier Turzyna informed the steelworkers that "they would be working tirelessly" to ensure legislation would come across that would ensure "Euclean steel would remain active, alive and competitive" on the global market.

He would go on to say that "there is a need for Euclean jobs to remain in Euclea, for the traditional industries of our heartland to continue to prosper and provide life and wealth for their communities."

Mac Suibhne would add: "Buying Euclean will help us keep good-paying, union jobs and expand these industries. Every Euclean deserves a competitive wage and union representation. It is our duty as national governments to ensure that this is made available to them."

Both he and Turzyna would further state that: "Likewise, we must ensure that future generations are able to become skilled workers and that these opportunities exist for them. A suit, tie, and a cubical does not work for everyone. They provide alternatives to those who do not want to continue into education, and would prefer a hands-on experience at a trade's school."

The legislation, simply put, aims on requiring private-sector construction and manufacturing contracts in utilising domestically produced Euclean steel. When a Euclean option is not available, governtment agencies would be instructed to give special consideration to bids from countries with most preferred trade status. This would cover companies from countries such as Cassier, Etruria, Senria, Rizealand, and more.

Both countries are expected to face a relatively easy uphill battle. Mac Suibhne will easily be able to pass the legislation as his governing Social Democratic Party controls a majority of the legislature's seats. The Gaullican governing coalition will be slower to pass the legislation, but is expected to advance it forward in the coming weeks.

Already, the plan has received support from numerous organisations across Euclea; including the Estmerish Steelworkers' Union and Industrial Workers' Union, and from some figures across the political spectrum.

The scheme has raised eyebrows among free trade advocates, who are concerned by economic protectionalism. Zacharie Blanchard, co-leader of the Gaullican Conservative and Progressive Republican Party, expressed alarm over the plan.

"It caters to economic nationalists and populists while undermining the international system of free trade and good economic policy".

The Premiers have indicated intent for a wider-reaching plan across the Euclean Community member states, potentially bringing them in line for a rife with Community President Walker. A strong supporter of free-trade, Walker is likely to be in opposition to the 'Buy Euclean' initiative.

The Patron League: Paretia's new right.
The political party that seeks to unite the right under an ideology of euclosceptic far-right populism and nationalism, it has become a significant player in the sudden snap election, as Premier Cerqueira has joined the party.
Nicolaua Descamps (@nicolauadescampseltosuton) | 28 June 2021 | Precea

Image
Leading members of the Patron League (Left to Right): Premier Isilda Cerqueira, General Secretariat Selena Caprichoso, Deputy Premier Paulo Sérgio Lima, and Labour Minister António De Armas

Ocerto, Esmeira: "Protect the culture" and "Save Paretia" are chants that were heard today at the nearly 15,000 people Patron League rally in Ocerto, Paretia's second largest city and capitol of Esmeira. Waving orange party flags and Paretian flags in massive support. There were four speakers at the rally, these four are considered the leading figures of the Patron League, being Isilda Cerqueira, Selena Caprichoso, Paulo Sérgio Lima, and António De Armas. This party indulges itself in populism and nationalism, saying they are the fighting the Pro-EC elites, which they call the "rats", "cronies" and "kleptocrats". What is this rising new movement in Paretian history which vies to take control now that Premier Cerqueira is a member of the party.

Image
A Patron League rally in Ocerto today
The Patron League was founded in 2013 by Selena Caprichoso and other right-wing leaders who abandoned the UC and other parties for becoming too moderate. The party has seen continuous growth since then as many began to switch to the new party, mostly conservatives dissatisfied with the UC, CpL, and others. The party of course is populist in nature, using various names to call it's enemies, which it claims is the Paretian Elite, who are "enslaved by the Community to do their bidding" and to "kill the culture of Paretia". The party often refers to it's supporters as the "uprising" or the "rebellion" against these elites. Their base comes mostly from the white working class, which the party claims have been wronged by the both the left-wing and right-wing establishment. The party has begun to see a growth in support from the lowest classes who feel that the Patron League is the right answer. As the party holds many positions that are considered by many to be "left-wing", particularly positions on welfare, women's rights, and taxing the rich. The party noticeably takes a lot of inspiration from Carcaterra's Tribune Movement of Etruria.

The party however is still extremely nationalist, especially on some social issues, such as religion, the party wishes to establish Solarian Catholicism as the national religion of Paretia and enforce catholic imagery like crosses in places like schools and government buildings. Claiming to be a party for "law and order", the party is in support of a strong police force and a deterrent punishment system. The party has a stark "anti-liberal" position on education, saying that it teaches "evil" to the children of Paretia, and wishes to quell it from the education system. The party also wishes to put up strong immigration policy and limit the amount of migrants who wish to come into Paretia, leaders like Caprichoso use some harsh tone saying that immigration will "kill the culture". The party's nationalism of course comes with ties to some unsavory groups.

Image
Neo-Functionalist "Despertar Novanista" rally in support of LP in
Ocerto today
The party has seen lots of support from the Paretian neo-functionalists, who today have begun to hold rallies claiming their support for the Patron League. These many far-right groups include the Despertar Novanista (Novanist Awakening), who seek to bring Paretia back to the functionalist Novanist regime of Carlito Palmeira during the Great War. One of the group's leading members, Claudio Ocásio-Blázquez, lead a far-right march in Ocerto today. The Patron League's relationship with these far-right groups has been it's largest scene of controversy, despite denial by the party to accept their endorsements, they allow many of them to show at their rallies in support.

The Patron League also has seen controversy in it's continuous parroting of far-right conspiracy theories, mostly ones that insinuate the EC in evil acts against Paretia. The party claims that the EC and it's supporters in Paretia are part of an operation to make the masses easily controlled by enforcing political correctness, making the people "weak and malleable by the elite". Leaders like Caprichoso have used Great Replacement theory when speaking on immigration, claiming that Coian migration's ultimate goal is to replace Euclea with non-whites. Caprichoso also believes that the LGBT movement has been used by the elites to implant "sodomy" into the minds of Sotirians in order to further demoralize them, ultimately again "weakening the populace". They also believe the EC has purposefully kept Paretia economically behind other EC neighbors. Despite their radical stances on these issues they have taken the right-wing of Paretia by storm and has been polling very high, usually just behind the SD.

The rally today in Ocerto is be the first of many Patron League rallies planned over the next month. It is the second largest LP rally since their rally in Precea in 2020. The rally saw some counter protests nearby and pro-Social Democrat protests. During the rally, left-wing counter protesters and the far-right met in the streets of Ocerto, leading to a street fight that lead to 5 people being injured. The party is going to hold it's next rally in the nearby city of Canto Árboles on the 29th. the city has announced concerns for violence after the fighting in Ocerto today and has prepared a police force to deal with it. The party seeks to invigorate new supporters from the Kingdom of Esmeira and other regions, as much of it's original base is from central Luzela. Former Premier Marcelo Simões said that Paretia is experiencing a rise in extremist ideologies in both the far-left and far-right, he has contributed the rise of the Tribune Movement in Etruria as one the main catalysts for this. Much of this election has come down to voters abandoning the moderate parties for either the populist right and social democrats, and which side will get the upper hand over the other. The freefall in support for the moderate parties seems to continue in polls, only four parties have grown in polls, the center-left SD, the far-left SPIT, the far-right LP, and the populist Alt Party.

OPINION - With adults back in the room, Estmero-Shangean relations may be able to reset
Wilton-Smyth's cabinet of fools led relations to their nadir, but the new Estmerish government may be an opening for reconciliation

MORWALL - It's no exaggeration to say Estmero-Shangean relations are currently at a low. The disgraced Estmerish premier Reginald Wilton-Smyth - the product of one of Estmere's old aristocratic families that pine for the days before the national humiliation of 1929 - would often call the world's largest economy a "rogue state" and controversially included it as part of an "axis of evil" in January 2021. These anti-Shagean actions, augmented with upgrading relations with Senria and Etruria, have resulted in the two countries which previously enjoyed a fruitful economic partnership to devolve into acrimony and mistrust.

The replacement of Wilton-Smyth's conservative Sotirian Democratic Union with the centre-left Social Democratic and Co-operative Party last month however has ignited hopes that there may be an opening for reconciliation for the future. But recent history indicates that this may be a lost cause.

Estmere has traditionally been one of the pillars of anti-Shangeanism on the global stage, having long maintained an alliance with Senrian militarists whilst colonising parts of Shangea. During the 1980's Estmere played a large role in insisting economic liberalisation be enforced in Shangea which opened the country to predatory multinationals as a precondition for the reclamation of Jindao. However although this economic liberalisation (the Economic Reorganising Programme) had adverse social effects on Shangea it did allow a degree of normalisation between Estmere and Shangea with business to business relations becoming particularly cordial. This was commonly seen as heralding in a period of "hot economics, cold politics".

The Reform Party in Estmere particularly was a sensible partner for Shangea helping develop commercial and cultural links whilst fostering an atmosphere of goodwill within Euclea, aided by the similarly pro-business slant of Alexandre Lévesque in Gaullica. This enabled the start of the Estmero-Shangean dialogue forum in 2009 under Daniel Hawkins and Yuan Xiannian, a talking shop for businessmen and public officials to develop links between the two countries and work more closely on economic and social issues globally particularly following the 2005 financial crisis.

The shift in power from the Reform party to the SDU in 2012 under Matthew Dawson saw the commercial interests continue to deepen even as the political relationship became more estranged due to Estmere beginning to follow a Senriophilic policy. An opening in terms of cooperation came in 2015 when Richard Graham, the young flashy moderate conservative who ascended to the premiership, began to move away from the trend of hot economics, cold politics" towards a more comprehensive approach to Shangean politics. The start of Normalisation - the broad term covering the programme of anti-corruption and anti-subversiveness that the government undertook following a Senrian-backed insurrection in January 2017 - saw Graham follow the EC as a whole in imposing financial sanctions following Senrian pressure with the express purpose to cripple Shangea's rise. Yet Graham understanding that Shangea as the worlds largest economy was more integral to the continued functioning of the Estmerish economy maintained commercial links indicating Estmere's reputation as a country of unflappable, sensible people was well deserved.

Reginald Wilton-Smyth ruined this image. A pugnacious member of the haute-bourgeoise Wilton-Smythe's cabinet can be charitably described as reckless at best, stunningly incompetent at worst. Wilton-Smyth was ideologically aligned with Senrian militarists and Etrurian neo-functionalists, himself a representative of a shire reactionarism that longs for the days of the Estmerish Empire and as such despite his background in "economics" wilfully sought to destroy the Shangean-Estmerish relationship to please his bedfellows in Keisi and Poveglia.

This attitude was backed by an anti-Coian racism that has steadily been baked into Estmerish society that regards the idea of a non-Eucleanised country rising to be equal if not greater then Euclea as unfathomable. The idea that the "australite" is able to stand on his own feet without the so-called "assistance" of the white man is an anathema to this mindset. As such, the "australites" have to be put in their place by "strong leadership" from the white countries and their "civilised" lackeys - a role Wilton-Smyth was all to happy to play in his approach to Shangea. As a result relations have entered a nadir, with Estmerish intransigent lecturing on unimportant subjects or falsities having exhausted any patience the Shangean government has with Morwall.

So will the new Social Democrat administration be any different? Early signs suggest not. Unlike the Gaullican social democrats who were amongst the earliest to recognise the inevitable rise of Coius and choose to help build stronger cooperation as a result their Estmerish counterparts have continued the right-wing propaganda line that Shangea and Zorasan need to held to a "higher standard" then other nations making a mockery of the notion of sovereignty. That said, even if Halivar however wanted to implement a more sensible policy towards Shangea there is still the fact that her party has not held government for decades and so largely consists of foreign policy lightweights who cut invisible figures on the international stage. The pressures from the Senriophilic securocrats will likely mean a continuation of laughably hawkish security policies whilst the strongly racist attacks on Shangea in the Estmerish press will continue.

However Halivar has previously criticised the former Wilton-Smyth government for its approach to foreign policy, not least strongly criticising his axis of evil speech. There's a chance - albeit a small one - that Halivar is able to overcome institutional blockade and start a new partnership with Shangea based on mutual respect and aiming to move forward in shared interests in development, improving global health and maintaining global stability.

Shangea is waiting for the adults to be back in the room. It's up to Estmere to send them.

Finance Minister - Euclean move to protectionism a "retrograde move"
Economic Strategy Coordination Committee recommends increasing steel production and exploring an appeal to the OIC

RONGZHUO - In an official statement the Minister of Finance and Public Credit Mao Lejiang has publicly criticised a recent announcement by the Gaullican and Caldish governments to introduce legislation favouring Euclean steel companies in public works project on the grounds it undermines global free trade.

Dubbed "Buy Euclean Steel" the initiative is believed to be supported by several centre-left governments in the EC with Estmere, Hennehouwe and Azmara expected to introduce similar legislation in coming weeks despite reluctance from the Euclean presidency surrounding the initiative. The legislation seeks to force governments in Euclea to buy steel from either EC manufacturers or countries aligned with the EC such as Senria and Etruria.

Mao stated that the initiative "primarily props up dead industries and seems designed to target steel produced in developing markets particularly in Coius so to prevent their expansion. Its economically unsound and an unfortunate retrograde move into the worst kind of protectionist practices."

Mao's comments came after a meeting with the Economic Strategy Coordination Committee (ESCC) consisting of the finance, development, agriculture, industry and international ministries meet to discuss global trade trajectories. The premier of the executive council Jiang Zhongyu is expected to propose a trade liberalisation strategy later this week to address the implications of this move by Euclea.

Trade and Customs Minister Jiang Xiaosheng who sits of the ESCC stated that the body recommends that the Shangean government approach the International Trade Organisation (OIC) to arbitrate any potential dispute arising from moves towards protectionism. The government also has pledged to increase the production targets for steel in the next three year plan in 2023 in order to more effectively compete with non-tariff barriers. The ESCC recommended that as a whole Shangea should focus on raising production to ensure greater dominance in the market rather then counter-tariffs which would be symbolic in practice.

The ESCC stated from their meeting that the Euclean move likely would be ineffective being primarily designed to appease vested interests in ossified trade union bodies. However it warned that the move shows a rising nativist trend in Euclean politics marked by xenophobic and protectionist rhetoric and that the government must alter its approach to the Euclean Community countries if this trend continues.

Shangea is the largest producer of steel on the planet producing 489.5 million metric tons of crude steel in 2020 with a target to increase this to 500 million per annum by 2023. It is also the world's largest exporter exporting 50.7 million metric tons in 2020.

Green nominee Faustyna Romanowicz in her campaign materials

In a massive blow to the Green Party leadership, environmental activist Faustyna Romanowicz was elected by the Green Party membership to be their presidential nominee for the upcoming general elections, defeating Green chairman Henryk Rydzewski with 64% to 36% on the fourth ballot.

In her victory speech, Faustyna Romanowicz vowed that "the Green Party led by [Romanowicz] would push Miersa forward into the twenty-first century. We are no longer in the twentieth century where it is acceptable to just spew forth pollutants and expect nothing bad to happen. We are in the twenty-first century, where if we don't start making plans to move away from fossil fuels, don't prioritise the protection of the environment, and don't make tangible steps, I guarantee you that in 15 years, we'll all be paying the price."

"The Green Party is the only party in all of Miersa, all of the Miersan Sotirian Republic to care about the environment; the only party that cares about what young people want, and the only party that will stand up against both the Scylla and Charbydis of Naprzód and another Wojdyla," Romanowicz declared. "And to this end, I am confident that we will stand for what is right for Miersa, for our children, and for you!"

Later that night, the Green Party membership voted on her running mate, selecting Zygfryd Szmuk to be her running mate. If she wins the Presidency, that'll mean that Zygfryd Szmuk will become Vice-President of the Miersan Sotirian Republic.

Rydzewski accepted defeat, saying "the Green Party membership has clearly accepted that they want to take a different approach than what I have proposed. I completely and utterly respect that, and I am looking forward to working with Mrs. Romanowicz and her team in the upcoming election campaign."

Furthermore, Rydzewski expressed confidence that "the Green Party will see their best result ever: certainly we'll get at least ten percent of the vote."

GOVERNMENT DISMISSES 'FAUX' INTERNATIONAL CRITICISM OF BUY EUCLEAN SCHEME

Image
Shirn Amanpour, International Investment Minister, has defended the Buy Euclean Steel initiative.

By COILEAN DRUIMEIN

Senior figures in the Caldish government have dismissed criticism over the proposed Buy Euclean initiative. The scheme was proposed earlier this week by Taoiseach Stiofán Mac Suibhne and Gaullican Premier Mathéo Turzyna. It calls for legislation that would require government agencies to give preference to EC-based steel companies.

Criticism of the scheme has been mounting in recent days. Officials in the Shangean and Zorasani governments have come out hard against the initiative, branding it as protectionist and raising concerns over the future of free trade. Government sources in both countries have also criticized the Buy Euclean initiative for locking out developing countries.

Shirn Amanpour, a senior Caldish government minister, said that the criticism was misguided and dismissed it as “faux outrage”.

“Buy Euclean works to foster good-paying, union jobs. It creates new opportunities for Euclean workers and further diversifies Euclean economies. Any claims that this program would fully lock out developing nations or violate international trade norms is simply the fear mongering of authoritarians” the minister said in a statement to reporters.

“This faux outrage seeks to capture headlines and nothing more. The initiative extends to government contracts and government contracts only. It ensures that taxes paid by Eucleans are supporting Euclean jobs. If the private sector wishes to follow suit, so be it. They are not required to”.

Amanpour, who has served as Minister of International Investment and Cooperation since last month’s cabinet reshuffle, also confirmed that the Caldish government would introduce legislation shortly.

Caldia is joined by the governments of Gaullica and Estmere in the Buy Euclean initiative. Several additional EC member-states are expected to sign on, with the Azmaran and Hennish governments rumored to be joining in the coming days.

The scheme has been met with opposition within the EC as well. Advocates of free trade and business interests are criticized the program as protectionist and expensive. It has also been met with the disapproval of EC President Alexis Walker. According to reporting done by the Continental earlier this week, Walker was surprised by the Buy Euclean initiative.

Despite some political opposition, the Buy Euclean initiative looks set to kick into motion in several EC countries due to government support and control of national legislatures. Mac Suibhne has promised to introduce the legislation after the Tionól returns from its summer recess on August 16th.

The program marks a departure from neoliberal economic policy that has dominated Euclean capitals in recent decades. Many of the bloc’s social democratic parties have previously supported free trade. However, the 2005 World Financial Crisis led many of the continent’s centre-left parties away from it. Parties have moved closer to more traditional social democratic positions and have renewed their ties and commitments to trade unions.

“This is not your father’s Social Democratic Party, this is your grandfather’s party” Liam Ó Toghda, a professor of political science at the Public University of Spalgleann, commented.

“Mac Suibhne is closer to Ó Muilleoir than he is Nic Uilliam. So far his domestic policy and spending has shown this, but this is the first time he has played his hand on international economic policy”.

Werania to designate June 16 "Genocide Memorial Day"
Date aligns with the defeat of Shangean forces in Senria and thus the end of the Senrian genocide in 1932.

WESTBRÜCKEN, WERANIA - The federal government has today announced it will designate June 16 as Genocide Memorial Day in an effort to help "educate and promote awareness of crimes that have continued to affect people today to ensure that never again will humanity face such horror".

The date is the same as that of the surrender of the last Shangean forces on the Senrian archipelago which is designated by the Senrian government as the official end of the Senrian genocide. The Senrian genocide was the first to be recognised as such in global history and is recognised as the one with the highest death toll with independent estimates stating 8-10 million people died at the hands of Shangean forces in occupied Senrian in a four year period.

The designation of the June 26 date is in preparation for the 90th anniversary of the end of the genocide in 2022. The Weranian government officially recognised the Senrian genocide as such in 1952 after lobbying from the Senrian survivor groups successfully highlighted international focus on the genocide. Education minister Egon Niebergall also indicated that the Weranian government would aim to make the teaching of the genocide compulsory on a federal level in the coming weeks for the upcoming school year stating it is the duty of older generations to raise awareness for the genocide.

The move was welcomed by the Yurusarenai Tumi Foundation, a group that was founded to raise awareness for the Senrian genocide but has since more generally supported greater action and education on ongoing ethnic cleansings and human right abuses. A spokesperson for the group, Uchima Tatsumi, stated that by commemorating the genocides of the past century Werania was showing that it is "committed to ensuring that the victims of unspeakable crimes are recognised and mourned so we can ensure it never again happens".

The choosing of the Senrian genocide date however has garnered some criticism due to the perceived exclusion of commemorating other genocides, most notably the contentious case of Weranian colonial crimes in Maucha which are not recognised as crimes by Werania. Additionally the move may be controversial in Shangea which does not admit to its actions in Senria as being genocidal with the incumbent Shangean State Chairman Yuan Xiannian in particular being accussed of denialism.

A Political Steel Shakeup
As the coalition government announces legislation to be tabled at the resumption of the Senate in August, unlikely political alliances are forming.

Verlois, Gaullica.

As Gaullica and Caldia's "Buy Euclean" Initiative gains traction across Euclea, and looks set to face resistance from the Euclean Community's highest authorities, domestic criticism of the plan is arising in Gaullica -- and to a lesser extent, Caldia.

In Caldia, where Taoiseach Stiofán Mac Suibhne enjoys a comfortable majority in a majoritarian model, the legislation to implement the plan looks set for a steady course.

In Gaullica, however, a legislative battle seems to be taking shape between the parties as they gear for an intense debate once the Senate sets to reconvene in August. Opposition to the planned legislation and the "Buy Euclean" initiative in general is rallying behind one of the co-leaders of the opposition; Senator Zacharie Blanchard of the PRCP. Blanchard, internationally renowned for his stint as Gaullica's Minister of Defence under Devereaux, who aimed to "secure trade" in the Aurean by way of militarisation, has regarded the moves as "economic warfare" against the developing world.

"Its a form of economic warfare," the Senator told Le Monde. "It is preventative of free trade; showing to the world that Euclea advocates for rules for thee but not for me. If this passes, the criticisms of the Community that regard it as "Fortress Euclea" will be true."

Blanchard touched on other arguments, indicating that "environmentally, this is pushing the boundaries of what is sustainable in Euclean countries. These steel industries will have to rely on depleting Euclean iron ore deposits, which will need to dig more extensively into the earth to acquire iron that is far cheaper, more accessible and less destructive in deposits from our traditional iron-trade partners."

He has called upon a legislative "alliance" to aim to flounder the bill, where he has already received support in this endeavour from his fellow PRCP Senators and some disgruntled voices within Les Verts, who have argued "environmentally, this is a disastrous step for Euclea".

A spokesperson for the 'green rebels' has argued that they are not fighting against "good union jobs", but that those forms of jobs should be invested in "the emerging and necessary renewables sector".

Whilst the UCT and Gaullican Conservatives have yet to muddle the waters in this upcoming legislative battle, shockwaves were sent when the plan for the "Buy Euclean" initiative were loudly supported by elements of the Front National.

Alfred Boulanger, the leader of the party, declared that "this is one of the few areas where we have no complaints with the idea put forward by the government. For too long has our domestic industry been at the mercy of undercutting practices in competing countries. In Shangea, what regulations do they have in the iron mining industry? How many children do you think work in iron mines for less than pennies?"

If the FN does follow through with what it has indicated, it would be the first time in legislative history where a Social Democratic government has been supported by them. However, Premier Turzyna stated that "they are supporting the plan for the wrong reasons: for beliefs contrary to those we hold. Our intentions are for our workers, theirs is to criticise other countries".

With a potential rebellion from the Greens, it may be the case that the government requires this FN support more than they'd care to admit.
