Short statement released today by chancellor's office is likely directed at Chistovodia and Maracao

KALNASPILIS, AUCURIA | January 30, 2021 - The office of Chancellor Petras Uspelevičius has released a short statement today calling for the "demilitarization" of the Arucian Sea, in a statement widely believed by observers to be directed at the governments of Chistovodia and Maracao.
Calling the sea "a vital throughway for commerce and trade", the statement said that "certain actors in the Asterias have exploited unfortunate circumstances to militarize the Arucian, abusing what should have been an opportunity for Asterian nations to come together in humanitarian cooperation in favor of short-sighted hardline moves... these irresponsible, provocative actions pose the risk of destabilizing Asteria Superior and Asteria Inferior alike."
"The preemptive militarization of the Arucian Sea by these actors was one disconnected from the actual diplomatic and political situation in the area, and yet it stands to potentially destabilize the entire Arucian region," the statement continued. "The government of the Aucurian Republic believes that this militarization should be reversed as soon as possible, in the interest of preserving and protecting peace and diplomacy between the countries of the Asterias."
While the statement is vague and does not reference any countries by name, it is widely believed that the statement refers to the governments of Chistovodia and Maracao; Chistovodia has massively expanded its military presence in Maracao, and by extension the Arucian, since 2020, expanding their naval presence from nine vessels to twenty-three. Chistovodia moved its military to the country with the pretense of delivering humanitarian aid following the 2020 Pico de Sangue eruption, which killed at least 40,000 people.
Chistovidian actions have been backed by the regime of Adão Costa, which has permitted the expansion of naval and aerial facilities, ostensibly for the delivery of aid, by the Chistovodian military.
It is presently unclear if the statement represents a potential shift towards a harder line on the Arucian situation by the Uspelevičius administration, which has previously remained mostly quiet on the issue; should a shift to a harder line manifest, it is hard to say what actions Aucuria might concretely take on its own or alongside its allies and blocs like ASTCOM. It is also unclear how exactly Social Democratic voters, and the leadership of other political parties, might respond to such a stance. At the moment it is clear that the Uspelevičius administration hopes to avoid too direct of a confrontation, but should its statements become more explicit in who they are criticizing, speculation of a more hawkish tone might be vindicated.
As of press time, neither Chistovodia nor Maracao has issued a response.
