The Nazarists Fighting A Holy War In Fahran December 31st, 2023 - Asher Nazarani ........................................... | For many of those fighting in Fahran today the civil war is about to enter its fifth year. For them, it began with the New Year’s Day Coup by the NSC. A group whom seemed to receive tacit support from elements of the Alanahri government at the time. This year one of their key leaders, Muherram von Dauenhauer, was killed fighting against Alanahri forces. At the beginning of the war Kembesa was a Royalist ally, now its forces are fighting against a so-called Royal Army of Fahran. These are reminders of the strange shifts in alliances this war has seen. For others, the war began for them just under two years ago. With direct interventions by states like Alanahr, Latium, and Velikoslavia. However, less well-known might be the non-state actors who began their involvement around that time. And in particular, Nazarist fighters looking to fight a holy war on behalf of the Azdarin faithful. Kushttod are legal paramilitary forces who trace their origins to forces predating the Gharib invasion of Alanahr. Often called military orders and sometimes confused with those resident in Sydalon but not sharing the same crusader origins, they exist today as a holdover of the Second Alanahri Civil War. Many of the modern Kushttod organisations were formalised in this period. Our first fighter, known to us as Gaj, is a member of the Kushttod ash-Shur al-Aphjad (often shortened to the Kashaph). The Kashaph came to Fahran under the umbrella of the Alanahri intervention shortly after Kembesa began their attempted annexation of as-Souhr. Asked why he came he responds “There was no choice about coming, especially when we heard about the desecrations. We could not all ourselves Alanahri while the faith of our brothers and sisters was under attack.” Gaj is a former Special Forces operative, during the Fahrani counter-offensive his unit primarily performed recon and raids. He recalls fighting Kembesan soldiers saying “At some point it became obvious by their reaction if they were penal, conscripts or zealots, just by how they would initially respond. Regulars would take cover and if they got the chance gave back as good as they got. Conscripts would sometimes try and fire back immediately, made for easy targets. If they never fired back, they were probably penals.” The second fighter refused to share his real name, instead calling himself al-Dir (the shield). He serves with the Kushttod al-Mussthash, whose members are called Mussthashi. Mussthashi serve most often as combat medics. Unlike the Kashaph they rarely operate as units and instead attach themselves to allied forces. Al-Dir was initially received with some suspicion by the forces he served with. After the Kembesans violated holy sites there has been a spike in hatred and violence towards Nazarists in Fahran. Al-Dir claims that this was expected “In a way we had come here because of what Nazarists had done. We wanted to show them that we stood against the desecration of their faith. And we knew words would not be enough.” Al-Dir described how his postings would have varied outcomes “Sometimes I would be forced to leave a squad. In one mission, an injured fighter refused my treatment, I knew then that staying in the squad would be more dangerous to them than getting another medic assigned.” He spoke fondly of another deployment “I was posted to a squad of very zealous young men, they looked at me like I was a demon. During one of our first missions the Kembesans brought the sky down on us, artillery. Half the squad was wounded and we were forced to hide in a hole for three days. I kept those boys alive and got them home, when we were finally put back into operation the tone was different. I earned respect, and eventually I earned friendship.” Now as the war is slowing down their Kushttod are seeking to have their members placed on peacekeeping duties. Gaj has said that he plans on returning to Alanahr once Fahran is considered at peace. However al-Dir says that he is hoping to remain in Fahran and continue his work, whether with the Kushttod or as a civilian. |
