Breaking: Majority of Conservative-National Deputies Have No Confidence in PM, Remove Him as Leader
By: Mihalis Metaxas (@MMetaxas)
[Lihnidos - AD] Arcadia - A majority of Conservative-National deputies in the National Assembly have voted to remove Prime Minister Fotis Raptis as Leader of the Conservative-National Alliance, party chairman Claus Vascos announced this evening. The vote comes just days after at least twenty-six deputies submitted letters to the party chairman requesting a vote of no confidence after losing faith in the Prime Minister's leadership. Raptis, who vowed to fight for votes of support from every member of his party and whose office said the vote would 'inevitably fail', lost the vote ninety-nine to seventy. The Conservative-National Alliance will now begin the process of electing a new leader just six months before the upcoming October general election.
The Prime Minister, who held a press conference outside of the Prime Minister's residence following the vote, said that he was saddened by the results of the vote, but that he respected the decision of his colleagues. "While I greatly disagree with the outcome of the vote this evening, it is clear that I have lost the confidence of the Conservative-National caucus in the National Assembly and that my time as leader of the party is coming to an end. Despite the claims of my critics, the facts are that during my time as leader the party has seen three back-to-back general election victories and record growth in membership. Over the twelve years I have been Prime Minister and leader of the party, myself and my governments have governed efficiently and effectively, succeeding in implementing many policy objectives and helping lead the country through times of uncertainty."
Raptis was elected as Leader of the Conservative-National Alliance and Prime Minister following the death of previous Prime Minister and Leader Lycaon Buros in early 2010. Only thirty-two at the time, he was the youngest person ever to be appointed Prime Minister, and is currently the second longest serving Prime Minister in Lihnidos' history. Addressing what his next steps would be in the coming weeks, he said, "Over the course of the next several weeks the Conservative-National Alliance will undergo the process to elect a new leader. I will do everything in my power to ensure that the process and transition for whoever is elected is as smooth as possible. Once a new leader is chosen and has proven that they can command a majority in the National Assembly, I will resign as Prime Minister."
The process to elect a new leader could take up to a month and is expected to be contentious, as multiple candidates are likely to announce their intention to run for the leadership in the coming days. Whoever is elected as leader will immediately bare the responsibility of leading the party in the October general election and will face high expectations as the party looks to regain a majority in the legislature following a notable loss in seats during provincial council elections in 2020.
Imperial Press Secretary Grigoria Mena has told reports that the Empress will address the no confidence vote during prepared remarks tomorrow while visiting a newly constructed nuclear power station in Thefkada.
