In the aftermath of the Stockholm Conference, the governments and citizenry of the major powers saw cause to rejoice. Africa, that dark continent, traditionally the foreboding and unchanged frontier, was split peacefully among the empires of the world. It was an opportunity to engorge oneself for some, to legitimize expansion, and for others it was the means to redress old wounds.
For the Federation, the conference meant a triumphant return to the continent, with the imperial banner once more flying over a Gibetan Kamerun. While this development was met with widespread support from across the spectrum of federal citizenry, the ripples caused by the Stockholm accords have brought fresh reminders of old promises.
The subject of Aelanias, and specifically the commitments made to that Arab state, were renewed recently in a press conference held by the Federal Foreign Office, and bolstered by the vocal support of the Kaiserin. Aelanias, a longtime sponsored state of the Federation, has always been seen as a buffer state between the Empire of Edafos and the traditionally weak underbelly of Europa. Subject to the agreements in Stockholm, Edafos was once again given control over the Sinai and the Suez Canal zone. Naturally, this has been cause for widespread concern--with Aelanias going so far as to declare a united African front-- as well as a desire by the federal government to properly define the relationship of the Federation and their Egpytian allies.
"The times in which we live are dangerous, with regional tensions in Africa, Europa and abroad at all-time highs. With our reemergence as a European power overseas, we must conduct ourselves accordingly. We cannot stand to set idly by while the positions of our allies, and indeed our own, are undermined by expansionist powers that care not for our commitments in the area. While we can accustom ourselves to some of the more agreeable terms of the accords in Stockholm, we cannot allow ourselves to renege on the commitments of our national government--indeed, our national pride--for the sake of a shyness of spilled blood.
The willingness of the likes of Aeuria and the Americans to sacrifice the Sinai--and nearly all of Egypt, were it not for our vehement refusal--spits in the face of the many thousands of brave men and women who gave their lives in the pursuit of an Egypt free from the corrupt oppression of the Edafosians."
Those were the words of our Foreign Minister, Wolfram van der Heit, speaking before the provincial press, as well as representatives of regional powers. His words were echoed and reinforced by the Kaiserin, who delivered her own address on the matter shortly after.
"The Federation will never abandon the Aelanians to a fate worse than mere occupation. Our current military assets in the territory have been placed on high alert in anticipation of negative backlash by the Edafosians, in regards to the recent declaration of a north African front. Naturally, they have our full support in this legitimate endeavor. I shall pledge the full might of the Reichsheer and Kaiserliche Marine to ensure the security of our Egyptian allies.
