HIGH HOPES FOR NAUSIKAA IN WINTER GAMES
Aurora Männistö

Image
The Nausikaan team at the opening ceremony yesterday in the Triumph Stadium, St. Quentin

The 2016 Winter games are underway in St.Quentin, Newrey! Yesterdays opening ceremony saw a lavish display of Newreyan art and culture. A spectacular firework ceremony marked the beginning of the opening ceremony, following William III of Newrey's official declaration.

Despite the enticing images of yesterday's opening ceremony the event itself was marred in controversy. The Newreyan governments recent actions in effectively criminalising homosexuality have led many athletes to boycott the games. Although nations have officially withdrawn from the competition, several athletes, most notably Nausikaan speed skater Pyry Lahti refused to attend the games following the Newreyan governments actions. Similarly, many athletes chose to boycott the opening ceremony of the games, although will still participate within the events themselves.
Many at home have high hopes for the Nausikaan team this year. Recent investment in new sporting programs has seen a wave of new talent enter the spotlight, with coaches hoping the payoff will be evident in results over the next few days. Speaking to the Neitiznot Oracle yesterday, Head Coach Terho Mäki said that "The team is looking strong, each have their own talents and unique abilities that im sure will be put to good use in the coming days. Many have excelled at our new intensive training programs and I believe this is the dawn of a bright new future for Nausikaan sport. This is one of the strongest teams i've seen in years." We certainly hope so Mr. Mäki, the coming days are sure to test the athletes to their limits.
Many senior politicians also paid tribute to Nausikaa's athletes, with President Saaristo wishing for each athlete to "Enjoy yourself, but bring home gold in the process." SDP leader Ohto Lumme also praised Nausikaa's athletes, telling them to "make all the hard work worth the effort." However other politicians also pointed to the recent controversy surrounding the event. Vellamo Kuusi, leader of the Socialists wished all athletes the best of luck for the event, but also stated "we must not forget the recent actions of the Newreyan government, these games also represent a stage with which a voice of protest can be broadcast worldwide."

The coming days will show the best Aeia has to offer in terms of winter sport, with athletes from across the globe competing for gold. Be sure to stay tune for more news updates on the events in Newrey over the coming days.

Come on Nausikaa!

News of Ohen - Aeian Winter Games

Postby Ohen » Sun Dec 18, 2016 4:24 pm

Sunday the 18th of December of the year 2016
(The Beacon - Ohen's biggest selling newspaper)

The 2016 Aeian Winter Games
No matter who you are and where you're from, you have undoubtably heard that the 2016 Aeian Winter Games are fast approaching. Ohen has been gripped by a Winter Games fever. There is a poster on almost every street corner, every news channel has an almost 24 hour coverage and there have even been parades of eager fans. It seems that the whole nation has decided to fight back the oncoming chill of winter by banding together in support of Ohen's elite winter athletes.

Earlier this year the Aeian Winter Games committee awarded Newrey the honour of hosting the games. The Newreyian delegation narrowly beat the delegations from Glanodel and Oserland. The success of the Newreyian bid to host the games has generated much turmoil and controvesy across Aeia. The worldwide LGBTQ+ community and several rights groups have been up in arms with regards to Newrey's laws pertaining to LGBTQ individuals. Under Newreyian law only heterosexuality is legally recognised and thus the only sexual orientation offered legal protection. Also the displaying of LGBTQ symbols and spreading of LGBTQ 'propaganda' is a punishable offence. Newrey's stance on this matter has caused great concern among organisers and competitors alike. Certain athletes have even been afraid of entering into the games for fear of being detained by Newreyian authorities. There have been several cases of brutal beatings of LGBTQ individuals by the Newreyian Police Force. It is however widely believed that competing athletes should be safe even if caught displaying LGBTQ symbols, the worst punishments facing them are a fine and confiscation of said symbol(s).

Rink-Side Controvesy!
Ice Hockey is Ohen's national winter sport and its largest spectator sport. The Ohenian Hockey Council announced at the beginning of November that they had selected Tomas Lindblad as the manager of the national team. This decision was initially met with public approval as the 57 year old Lindblad has three Division titles under his belt as a manager. His last victory was the 2014 Eastern Hockey Division, where he led the Karlskil Howlers to their first Division title in 13 years. (Of course they went on to repeat this victory in 2015 under a new manager).

Lindblad had waited until the 12th of December to announce his starting six as well as the rest of his 20 man squad. He unveiled his starting six as: Kalle Edgren (29), Ernst Åkerlund (27), Marcus Torsson (32), Hans Felberg (26), Simon Hargrev (34), Karl Denlunden (27). Public anger flared up immediately as both Denlunden and Torsson (who is the captain of the National Hockey Team) have come from the Horsvaar Hounds along with another four players in the squad. Lindblad is currently assistant manager at the Horsvaar Hounds, who only managed a meagre 14th place in the Eastern Hockey Division.

Further controvesy was added to Lindlad's squad when he announced that he would only be taking 3 players from the Western Hockey Division. Of course Western Ohen being the most populous area of Ohen could not stand being so under-represented. However western Ohenians can take comfort in the fact that Arnarfell Strongarms' top striker SImon Hargrev is in the starting six. So far 9 of Lindblad's squad are from Eastern Division teams, 8 from Northern Division teams and 3 from Western Division teams.

The whole Nation is hopeful for Ohen's upcoming matches in the preliminary group stages. Many are dismissing that the World Champions Glanodel will trample all opposition and claim the title. Each of the Super Seven teams remain strong contenders in the opinions of the bookkeepers. (Super Seven: Glanodel, CPSN, Nausikaa, Ohen, Midrasia, Newrey, Yvilonia (OOC:teams with skill score exceeding 70 as of 19/12/16))

Ohen's Ice Queens, Will They Skate to Glory?
Keeping on the topic of Ice Hockey, the Ohenian Women's Team are looking very strong and well prepared for the games. Head coach and acting manager Michelle Junskog announced her 20 woman squad very early on, but has since not released any details of who might be in the starting six. There have been plenty of rumours and speculation, some of these were finally put to bed when Junskog announced who the team's captain was. She has selected Emila Fronholm from the Northern Division's Lendek Millers to lead the Women's National Team. After this announcement the odds on for an Ohenian victory fell from 22-1 to 8-1. The 28 year old Fronholm is a living legend in female hockey. During the 2015-2016 winter season she scored 58 goals from her position on the right flank. This achievement made her the third highest scoring hockey player in Ohen that season from both men's and women's leagues.

The Ohenian Women's Team is set to play against Vrnallia, Yvilonia, and the Pan-Slavic Nations in the preliminary group stage of the games.Although all of those three teams are very strong Junskog commented that she was most concerned with the the PSN's women's team.

Biathletes Boastful
Another event that will open the 2016 Aeian Winter Games will be the Individual Biathlon. Many of the sport's top commentators have been talking about Ohen's chances looking good at these games. Especially for the National Champions Mattias Gulbeck (Men's 20km), Tomas Hansson (Men's 10km Sprint), and Tamilla Arbeja (Women's 15km). Arbeja has appeared in good form especially after having given birth to her third child just over a year and a half ago now. "I didn't think I'd be able to do it. You know, with this being my third one. I didn't think I could push my body so much, but I've done it and I'm ready to do my best." Arbeja commented earlier in the week.

Sticking with great recoveries, Ulrika Johansson the nations first and only female dual athlete (competing in two events). Johansson had surgery on her knees at the end of the 2015-16 winter season and has been on a miracolous road of recovery. She surprised everyone including herself when she won gold in the Women's 7.5 km Artificial Surface Sprint back in October. Hopefully she can make all of Ohen proud and suprise the rest of Aeia with her abilities.

He has been called 'The Well Aged Wine of the Biathlon', Mattias Gulbeck may be 38, but he's still got it he claims. "If you'd have told me back in 2006, when I first won the National Championships, that I'd still be racing at 38 with the title of National Champion I'd have laughed at you. The first time around it was great, the second time it was ever better and the third time it was amazing, but in 2009 for a fourth time around it didn't quite mean as much anymore. So, when I lost the title in 2010 and failed to claim it back in 2011 that really humbled me and motivated me. I realised this was something I had to work for and wouldn't just be given to me. It was crushing for me at the 2012 championships when I crossed the finish line in first , but then got second place because of a 20 second time penalty. I didn't think I could come back from that."
"But I did. I set a new national record with my 2013 time and broke that record in 2014. Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky in 2015, however I did still beat my 2013 record time. Who knows maybe I'll even beat the Aeian record this year, hahaha."
