Diogenes, a Modern Tech Roleplaying Region

Introduction

Diogenes is a modern tech roleplaying region that emphasizes core values such as Realism (Political, Scientific, and other forms), a close group of competent members, and alternative history. Nations will rise and fall, and new nations may emerge from the ashes. Nations will be believable and have a basis in actual historical context, and will fit their histories along with the histories of others. Overall we wish to deliver a believable and realistic alternative history roleplaying experience.

Members of the administration will post acceptance of denial and will send a tg notifying any applicant of said acceptance/denial. And we will give you reasons for denial if an application is denied. However we won't be rude or anything like that, we will be willing to offer advice and even go so far as to help you if need be. However do not take this as a get out of jail free card, you must show improvement if you wish to try and get in again.

-Password to the region will be telegramed to an accepted applicant.-

We look forward to having a fun and quality roleplaying experience with anyone who joins up with us!

The Rules

Now before I get started on the rules: There is the fact that there will be unspoken rules within the region that the administration can reserve the right to use if we find that it can help with quality control. While we most definitely wish for people to sign up and have fun with us, there must definitely a degree of quality enforced in order to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves without petty arguments or poor quality RP. With that said...

1. We demand realism from our members. You can't just have some multicultural utopia where everyone gets along, nor can you just start declaring wars and other negative diplomatic actions at a whim. Your diplomatic and political actions will be expected to have consequences. And we will be willing to help one another with developing events to help shape each others nations in a realistic manner.

2. Political discussion is fine and all, but we don't want arguments or anything breaking out between members here constantly. If anyone in the administration tells you to stop talking about a subject, you listen. Randomly brought up political discussions (Like say digressing from a discussion into one) is to be ignored the moment it is posted. We enjoy people having different opinions, but we do not enjoy people causing unnecessary divides when we wish to establish a healthy RP environment.

These are the only rules that are really needed to be shown as they can help establish the idea we want. As stated we will have unspoken rules that WILL be utilized if we find RP quality to be poor (And we will help those struggling, but don't expect us to always pick up on YOUR slack.). So really just use some common sense, only apply if you believe your RP experience is good, and overall just be a cool duder. Other than that we don't like to be overbearing, so we do want anyone who joins us to overall have a damn good time.

Official Application

General National Information

Formal Nation Name: 天上的中國帝國 [Tiānshàng De Zhōngguó Dìguó | The Heavenly Chinese Empire | The Tian Dynasty]
National Demonym: Tian | Chinese
Nation Population: Approximately 1,357,000,000.

Territorial Claims: All of modern-day China along with Taiwan and the South China Sea islands. The Tian Dynasty also indirectly controls Mongolia and Korea through satellite states; the former is ruled as a "Semi-Autonomous State" under an ethnic Mongolian administration that yields, officially, most of its economic rights to both the Russians and the Chinese, while unofficially yielding most of its political independence to the Tian Dynasty itself; over eighty percent of the Mongolian GDP is reliant on foreign investment, primarily from Imperial Chartered Corporations located in Ulaanbaatar. Korea, however, is administered somewhat differently. After the nation was occupied following the conclusion of the Third Sino-Japanese War, a unified Korea was "liberated" by the Heavenly Empire as "Greater Goryeo", but dynastic Korea was in reality reestablished by the brother of the Emperor of the time, who adopted the name "Gojong".

Please give a brief description of your climate and geography: The climate and geography of China is quite varied, with the nation incorporating swamps, jungles, plains, lowlands, highlands, mountains, and even the deserts in the form of the Xinjiang Province. In the far Northern portions of Manchuria, mountains and tundra-like steppes are reminiscent of their Northern neighbour, the Siberian territories.

Please give a brief description of your national ethnicities and culture: The nation very officially uses only a single language, Mandarin. However, there are over two dozen different languages and ethnicities in the nation, the largest and most well-known culture is the Yue culture of Southern China in the Canton provinces. Aside from the Yue, other fairly important minorities are the Tibetans, Uighurs, Miao, Zhuang, Yi, Manchus, Mongols, Kam, Li, and Hani. The overwhelming majority of people, however, are those that are known as Han Chinese people, and Mandarin is the only language taught in schools and used in administrations across the empire. Other ethnicities aren't forced to integrate, but are encouraged through both official and unofficial channels.

Please give a brief description of your national history: It would be hard to discuss the history of the Great Heavenly Chinese Empire without first discussing the two dynasties that preceded it: The Ming and the Qing dynasties. The Ming dynasty was birthed from the turmoil and ill-rulership that was brought by the Mongol Yuan dynasty in the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries. The Ming, along with a few other military or administrative dynasties once members of the Yuan dynasty, rebelled against Mongol rule and established themselves at the heart of China, in Nanjing. For economic and ecological reasons, however, the Ming dynasty was disastrously defeated by the Manchus in the mid-17th century due to a number of famines and weak emperors. As a result, the Sinicized Qing Dynasty rose to prominence in China, but almost immediately experienced issues as European powers clamoured to establish dominance over the massive empire. With European presence came European abuse. The Opium War forever weakened and de-legitimized the Manchu's regime, and by the beginning of the 1850's, the beginning of the glorious Taiping Revolution had already begun. Hong Xiuquan's Taiping Empire stretched across the Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Suzhou, Anqing, and the Eastern Hebei province. But with each subsequent victory against the Manchu and their local Green Standard Army, the ranks of Hong's army swelled further with those disillusioned with Manchu rule; Hong and his administration spread propaganda as far as Guangxi and Beijing regarding the Manchu's loss of the Mandate of Heaven and the glorious word of the Brother of Jesus Christ.

Without the European powers to lead their armies and train their troops, the much-diminished and exhausted Qing eventually sued for peace in 1857, recognizing Taiping independence as well as granting them control over the Guangdong province, which the Taiping Revolutionaries had occupied for most of the conflict. But disaster after disaster would only further Qing degredation. Revolts in Tibet and Xinjiang (Present-day Uighurstan) prompted further independence movements in both Mongolia and Korea, the former of which was extraordinarily successful at conducting a guerrilla campaign against the Qing occupiers, whereas the former was nearly impossible to police, as at the time most of the country remained nomadic. By 1861, the Qing Dynasty was nearing complete collapse; most of its economic livelihood had been destroyed or taken over by the Taiping Empire, which had seized the rich trading provinces of the South-Eastern Coast, which caused the European powers to favour the Taiping over the Qing. With no international allies and facing a number of internal issues, Hong Xiuquan launched a massive invasion which would become known as "The Southern Liberation" [南方解放 | Nánfāng Jiěfàng], where Taiping troops, now drilled by European officers, occupied Hunan, Western Hebei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Sichuan, wresting the entirety of South China from the Qing. But the Southern Liberation was only the first step in what Hong Xiuquan envisioned as "A New Middle Kingdom". Hong's troops thrust Northwards, decisively defeating the tired and outnumbered Qing armies and annihilating their forces. Those found to be working with the Manchus were branded as "Zhongzú Pàntú"; race traitors [種族叛徒]. Hong himself led the successful assault on the ancient Chinese capital of Beijing, the last power center for the Qing dynasty. After two weeks of hard-pressed, house-to-house fighting, the city, including the Forbidden City, was captured in the six-year-long campaign. The Qing Tongzhi Emperor, his children, wife, and concubines all lay dead by their own hand, and the Taiping Dynasty celebrated a new era of freedom. Celebrations, however, would not last long.

Hong Xiuquan lay on his deathbed as the Forbidden City fell, mortally wounded by a gunshot through his gut, a wound incurred during his leadership of the assault on the Beijing Legation Quarter. Rumours spread that the gunshot was actually inflicted by one of his own troops who believed Hong to be immortal as the Brother of Jesus. Regardless, Hong's dream of a united China for the Chinese was never seen by the divine figure; Hong Xiuquan died on July 26th, 1867, leaving the Taiping Empire to his seventeen-year-old son, Hong Tianguifu, or "The Junior King of Heaven" [幼天王]. Tianguifu's reign was immediately marked by problems. The Junior King was considered incapable by his peers, spoiled by the population, and inexperienced by the military. For what territory was controlled by the Taiping, it was relatively lawless and banditry was common. In the North-East, the Manchu Remnant remained poised to consolidate their position in Manchuria [Specifically their strongholds in Jilin, which remained out of Taiping control until the 1900's.], In the central portion of the nation, provincial governors in Shaanxi-Henan, Gansu, and Qinghai had set up their own personal autocracies, some claiming the Mandate of Heaven, while others simply ruling bureaucratic dictatorships. In Xinjiang, Uighur and Kazakh independence movements reigned supreme, and in Tibet the Lama had proclaimed a "Free Tibet". Despite Hong Xiuquan's dream of a unified China falling apart before his son's eyes, Tianguifu seemed hardly interested in the issues at hand, instead immersing himself in religion and his studies. Rumours began to spread among the administration that Tianguifu was not the real son of Hong Xiuguan and instead a bastard from his mother Lai Lianying and the insane North King Wei Changhui. Alongside the South, East, and West Kings, the Flank King Shi Dakai proclaimed the fact to be true, despite the fact that it was nearly impossible if one considered any of the "evidence" that they put forward. Lai Lianying was stabbed to death and Wei Changui was executed by slow slicing. In due course, Hong Tianguifu was deposed and in his stead the Heavenly Regency was formed by the remnant Kings.

The Kings of the Heavenly Kingdom were initially the top five advisers and military commanders of the Heavenly Kingdom under Hong Xiuquan, but were later transformed into its administrators following the successful revolution. However, the North King, Wei Changhui, was becoming increasingly unstable, and by 1867 it was well-known that a regency had to rule in his stead due to his arbitrary nature and frequent violent outbursts at court. Thus after his execution, the rest of the Kings, East, West, South and Flank, formed the Heavenly Regency, which was essentially a quadrarchy of absolutism until a suitable successor for the empire could be found. Each king, Feng Yunshan in the South, Yang Xiuqing in the East, Xiao Chaogui in the West, and Shi Dakai as the Flank, all thought themselves the rightful heir to the Empire and as such jockeyed among one another for influence and power in the unstable realm. Eventually, however, Feng Yunshan fell out of favour in the quadrarchy and a few top officers from his Southern Kingdom Contingent murdered him in 1869, and in 1871 Yang Xiuqing died of natural causes, most likely cancer, at the age of fifty. Like the late dominate of Rome, there now lay only two kings: Xiao Chaogui in the North and Shi Dakai in the South. It was not long before Shi Dakai made his move against Xiao. Shi performed a coup-de-grace in the West King's capital of Wuhan, capturing Xiao's wife Ai Baozhu, two daughters and son, and killing all of them, before marching his significant forces North where Xiao was encamped with his Second Heavenly Command in Kaifeng, pacifying the area. Xiao ensured that Shi had no way of knowing Shi's plans, and in January of 1872 Shi ambushed Xiao's command. He gave officers and soldiers chances the desert Xiao, to which about a third did so, before the Battle of Kaifeng began. Shi crushed Xiao's much smaller force, before marching further North-East to deal with a Manchu siege of Beijing.

Once the Manchu were routed, Shi Dakai returned to Nanjing, the capital of the Taiping Empire, as the only remaining King. He proclaimed on November 28th, 1872, the beginning of The Heavenly Chinese Empire and founded the Tian Dynasty by marrying Hong Xiuquan's young daughter Hong Min. However, Shi Dakai, taking on the name Huifu [恢復器], had a lot of work cut out for himself. Huifu was a strong emperor, and one that garnered a lot of popularity from both his subjects and those abroad. He first began by mediating a peace between the Taiping Empire and the Manchu Remnant in Jilin and Heilongjiang where they would be recognized as an independent entity in exchange for the Manchu evacuation of the old Qing province of Shenjing. In 1873 Emperor Huifu pacified the Xi Dynasty, who were former provincial governors under the Qing that seized the Shaanxi and Henan provinces. Unlike the Manchu, the Xi's forces simply melted in the fact of the Taiping army, as they had no real cause to fight for. Around this time, Huifu also introduced the I-Gu-Dao movement, which was the official successor to Hong Xiuquan's version of Christianity, including a codified book of religion that incorporated both the Bible and more traditional Chinese religious works. The Gansu and Qinghai provinces were also reconquered by Huifu during this time period. But by 1874, his armies were exhausted, and he sent the conscripted soldiers home while allowing the professional or volunteer soldiers to rest along the borders of the newly-established independent regimes in Uighurstan and Tibet.

The next two years Huifu spent solidifying I-Gu-Dao (also known as Yiguodao) as the state religion of China, tearing down Buddhist temples and burning Confucius' texts wherever they were found. Idols that didn't pertain to Christianity were smashed and Holy Temples [聖寺 | Shèng Sì] were raised in place of the desecrated places of Buddhist worship. Huifu also began an immense "De-Manchuization" of the nation, with Qing bureaucrats forced out of offices where they weren't absolutely necessary and replaced instead with naturalized Han administrators, though the results were mixed due to the fact that the Qing bureaucrats were quite experienced and many of the Han bureaucrats couldn't even read when they were assigned to their posts. By 1877, Uighurstan had been completely pacified and a provincial governorate established at Urumqi. Tibet was reincorporated the next year and the Lama deposed. In 1878 the Taiping Empire reconquered Inner Mongolia from the resurgent Mongolian Empire, but signed a treaty with them that nominally preserved their independence. Huifu briefly fell ill in 1879, but in 1880 he began a second conquest of Manchuria, going against his word some years earlier. After a hard-pressed campaign, Huifu defeated the general-turned-emperor Baturu Giotoho near his capital of Qiqihar. After a quick siege of the Manchu capital and the conquest of the rest of Heilongjiang and Jilin, the reconquest of China was completed. But Huifu would not live long enough to see its official completion. Fifty nine in 1880, Huifu became violently ill in Fengtian, the capital of the Shengjing province on his way back to Nanjing. He died two days later, probably due to food poisoning. Huifu was succeeded by his eighteen year old son Shi Zhong, who assumed the name Qiancheng [虔誠], who would reign well into his eighties, dying at the age of eighty five in 1947.

Qiancheng's reign was marked by an intense upscaling of military strength of China as well as the integration of minorities in the empire, as well as a much stricter adherence to Hong Xiuquan and the I-Gu-Dao movement. Thousands were systematically imprisoned or killed for protesting, peacefully or otherwise, the implementation of I-Gu-Dao as the state religion and the integration of Han Chinese culture and language into every vestige of every society under the Tian dynasty. Qiancheng was also much warier of the European powers, with a breach of relations between the Tian Dynasty and a large amount of Western nations. One of the first major actions that Qiancheng took was the "pacification" of Mongolia in 1883, when, after a series of campaigns, Heavenly troops occupied Ulaanbaatar and deposed the Khan of the Mongolian Empire and imposed instead a Mongolian administration loyal to the Chinese, recruited mostly from Inner Mongolia, which came later to be known as "The Tuoba Regime". Two years later in 1885 at the Tianjin Conference located in the city of the same name, the Tian Dynasty normalized its relations with its Northern neighbour, announcing a "pact of friendship" after Qiancheng renounced his nation's claims on the ethnically Manchu and Russian Outer Jilin and granting Russia certain economic concessions in Mongolia. This is often seen as a reaction to the increased threat of the Europeans and the Japanese, who had occupied Korea some decade back.

Qiancheng's rule remained fairly quiet until 1894 when a border skirmish between "Korean" soldiers, in reality Japanese troops engaged in a border skirmish with the Heavenly Garrison No.291 close to the city of Dandong. The Japanese soldiers bombarded the garrison for over twelve hours, causing the death of thirty seven Chinese soldiers and the wounding of one hundred and twelve more. In response, the North-Eastern Divine Manchurian Army bombarded Japanese lines across the entire Yalu River for a day and a half. Outraged by the response, the Japanese sent a joint Korean-Japanese delegation to Nanjing to demand an apology; Qiancheng decapitated all of them, stating, "Our One God ensures punishment for those who stray from the path and for those that attempt to destroy the righteous. It is right and good to ensure that one never strays from the path of righteousness by destroying those that seek to destroy you". Not two days later, China found itself at war with Korea and Japan.

Government & Economy

Capital City: Nanjing.
Form of Government: Nominally a semi-constitutional monarchy, though the emperor has the ability to veto any legislature passed by the parliament [議會 | Yìhuì] as well as what is known as the Heavenly Order [天堂秩序 | Tiāntáng Zhìxù], which is a legal concession that allows the emperor to force through any legislation through the Chinese parliament so long as at least ten percent of the Yìhuì votes "Yes"; similarly, the Yìhuì can veto any Heavenly Order put forward by an Emperor of one hundred percent of the voters vote yes, with no abstentions. This is known as Decree of the Popular [人民法令 | Rénmín Falìng]. The parliament itself is elected from and by the coalition of neo-reactionary aristocrats assembled from the traditional provinces of the Empire; the group is collectively known as The Five Hundred Iron Men [五百鐵人 | Wubai Tiěrén].
Head of Government: Heavenly Emperor Gaozu [天皇唐高祖 | Tiānhuáng Gaozu].
Head of State: Highest Prince Wu De [最高價格武德 | Zuìgāo Jiàgé Wu De].
How would you describe the political climate in your nation? Extraordinarily reactionary; the nation is currently undergoing what the middle-aged Gaozu described as "The New Reformation" [新的改革 | Xīn De Gaigé], referring to the massive military, social, and political reorganizations that the emperor begun some three years back after the death of his elderly father and his ascension. Corrupt and inefficient provincial governors are being arrested and tried for treason, and crime under the Triads of Southern and South-Eastern China, previously having run rampant, is being clamped down upon massively. Private enterprises are being nationalized by Gaozu under the New Reformation and the Chinese Emperor is, in his own words, "awakening the sleeping giant once more", after his father's ineffectual rule. Leftist organizations and underground political groups like the Kuomintang, Guānghuī De Dàolù [The Shining Path] and the Gémìngjiā Party of the Gansu Province are being suppressed once more and a number of riots have been forcefully put down by the police and the Special Branch [特殊分支 | Tèshū Fēnzhī | TeFen].

GDP and GDP per Capita: 1,239,000,000,000 [913$ USD per capita].
What is your nation’s economic system?: The economic system of the empire has always been a mix of the free market and imperial chartered companies in a complex, twisted version of state capitalism where privatized companies and firms received massive taxes and regulations and imperial charters were allowed tax rebates, administrative loopholes, and to get away with other generally corrupt activities. The end result was by the late 90's economic stagnation in the industrial portions of the nation and economic depression in the rural and outlying areas of the nation. While the economic system was rectified in a small way during the Xuèxīng Gaigé era of 2001-2004, most of the country either remained destitute or stagnant. Upon the announcement of the New Reformation by Gaozu comes the attached New Economic Plan, which reins in the rights of the Imperial Chartered Companies and relaxes the restrictions on privatized or foreign industry or otherwise private firms, stimulating activity in the private sector and stomping out corrupt in the public sector, sometimes very bloodily.
What is the current status of your economy: Prior to 2013, the economy was on the verge of collapse after decades of stagnation (after, of course, a long period of economic prosperity in the 40's through 60's). However Gaozu's New Reformation has begun a large economic revitalization program that, while ambitious in both its aims and its time period, looks to improve the GDP of the country and the living conditions of the average Chinese person. The Chinese GDP has grown steadily by an average of 4.43% over the past three years. However, despite this, there is still a massive divide between the rich and the poor, with those located in the more rural areas of the nation oftentimes living in completely destitute lifestyles, scratching out livings on small farms. In the cities, however, economic prosperity has returned, to a degree, and those that can afford to live and work in an urban center tend to be quite well-off.

Military

How many active and reserve personnel: 2,915,000, 0.21% of the population.
What percentage of your nation’s GDP is spent on the military: 2.2% [272,580,000,000$ USD]
How would you rate the training level of your military (1-10): It depends on the type of brigade. The conscripted brigades are between a three and a four, while the professional brigades range from seven to eight.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Mongolia and the Korean peninsula will remain available to any one who wishes to hold them as long they comply to Transoxthraxia's past history, but development on the present and future will lay solely on the desired actions from the applicants.

We're currently looking for more British nations.

I'll gladly claim Southern England, and perhaps some colonial holdings. Writing up an app now. This is a new nation, so I haven't done any previous RPs with it, will an example from another nation be accepted?

General National Information

Formal Nation Name: The United Kingdoms
National Demonym: English
Nation Population: 29,300,000 in the Kingdom of South England - 23,082,400 in the Kingdom of Boreale (Eastern Canada) - 110,800,000 in the Kingdom of Koethia (Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil) - 6,200,000 in the Territory of Sierra Leone
Total population of Empire: 169,382,400

Territorial Claims:

(South England, Wales, Eastern Canada, Northeast and Southeast Brazil, Sierra Leone)

Please give a brief description of your climate and geography:
See climate and geography of claimed areas

Please give a brief description of your national ethnicities and culture:
The Kingdoms of England and Boreale are homogeneously English, but in the Kingdom of Koethia under half of the population are English. There are Dutch, German and Portugese minorities present in Koethia, but the majority are of mixed African and indigenous heritage. In Sierra Leone almost the entire population is African, as this was historically a Company holding rather than an English colony.

Please give a brief description of your national history:

In 1962, the High Parliament of the United Kingdoms abolished its constitutional monarchy, becoming the United Federal Republics. The House of Koethe was deposed, ending a dynasty that had ruled in South England for almost 300 years.

The UFR would last for many decades. But the early 21st century saw the rapid degeneration of its liberal democracy, lain low as in many parts of the world by the advent of post-truth politics, and an unprecedented wave of extremist populism. The 2015 election was won by a reality-tv star, quickly impeached for abuses of power. The 2016 election was won by a meme, causing a constitutional crisis.

It was in these frightening and uncertain times that the Monarchist Party swept to victory. Like most parties of the day, it had begun as a joke, but after several consecutive years of political debacles it became a beacon of sorely needed hope. The Monarchists came to power with a mandate not only for the restoration of the line of Koethe, but the return of royal powers that, under the old High Parliament, had long since withered away. The people had lost faith in democracy, and they did want a mere figurehead, they demanded a ruler.

Government & Economy

Capital City: London
Form of Government: Absolute Monarchy
Head of State and Government:
Her Supremacy Hanne VI of the House of Koethe, Queen of South England, of Boreale, and Koethia, Empress of these the three United Kingdoms of the Black Crown

How would you describe the political climate in your nation?:

Crisis prompted the restoration of the Monarchy, and that crisis remains. Years of irresponsible, inexperienced leadership under short-lived populist governments have left the Kingdoms in economic decline, mired in political corruption and social discord. During the past fifty years of the UFR, many former colonial territories in the Caribbean and West Africa have also fought and won wars of independence, or been granted it by weak English governments unwilling to fight back. The United Kingdoms have lost much prestige, and lost their sense of place and purpose in the world, particularly given the stark contrast between their failures and defeats with the enduring success of Hisberia's global Empire.

The restored Monarchy has a daunting task ahead. It must heal the wounds of division and unify a broken people across three continents. It must prove that it can succeed where democracy failed, and bring them the prosperity, equality, order and justice that the elected governments of the UFR could not.

GDP and GDP per Capita: GDP: 4.5 trillion NS dollars - GDP per capita - 26,567 NS dollars
What is your nation’s economic system?: Free Market, Capitalist
What is the current status of your economy (Growing, Recession, Stagnating.): Stagnating. Years of weak, short-lived governments and now global condemnation over the abandonment of democracy has seriously damaged London's position as a centre of world finance. Boreale and Koethia are extremely rich in natural resources, but an over-reliance on manufacturing and the export of these resources and raw materials has left the economy vulnerable to fluctuations in price.

Military

How many active and reserve personnel: 420,473 regulars, 840,500 reserves
What percentage of your nation’s GDP is spent on the military?: 2.3%
How would you rate the training level of your military (1-10): 7

My personal issues would be the presence of absolute monarchy and possibly Brazil - otherwise, it's all good. Maybe Cornwall and Wales could be left unclaimed, though?

Maybe limited monarchy? You could retain coastal Brazil, that would work.

Cornwall and Wales mainly because I was thinking of a balkanised United Kingdom - but those aren't demands or anything.

Freedumbs has TGd me with various changes he wants. But after I've sorted that we can discuss the state of Britain. So you're thinking our nations could have been formed from the breakup of the UK? I'd be happy to change my app so that our nations' backgrounds fit each other.

Official Application

General National Information

Formal Nation Name: Eastern Roman Republic (Byzantine Republic)
National Demonym: Byzantine / Eastern Roman
Nation Population: 139,233,594

Territorial Claims: Greece, Western Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Sicily, Albania, Bosnia, Croatia

Please give a brief description of your climate and geography: See geography of aforementioned nations.

Please give a brief description of your national ethnicities and culture: A very cosmopolitan nation, with the Turkish invasion repelled in the 1500s, most of the Byzantine population is Greek in ethnicity. Balkan minorities such as Serbs, Bulgarians and Bosnians enjoy a large amount of autonomy as semi-autonomous states.

Please give a brief description of your national history: The Byzantine Empire was formed out of the Roman Empire in 285AD. With it's founding in Constantinople in 330AD, it boasted the riches of Egypt, Greece, Anatolia and the near East, and quickly surpassed the Western Romans in economic and military might. The Western Romans fell from Barbarian invasion, and severe economic woes in 476A.D. but the Eastern Romans stood strong. They fought prolonged wars against the Middle East, Barbarians to the North, and Barbarians to the south.

It had reconquered Italy by 555AD, and remained the most powerful force on the planet. The rise of Islam presented a very real threat to the Byzantine Empire, and the Arab Caliphate constantly clashing with the Byzantines, eventually securing Syria and the Levant, and much of north Africa. The Byzantines then lost Sicily, and much of Turkey before the conquests began to slow in 750AD with the end of the Umayyad Caliphate. The collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate resulted in a massive succession crisis within the Islamic world, which the Byzantines were able to exploit to regain a large portion of their previous holdings in the near east.

The Spread of the Seljuk Turks west presented another significant threat from the Islamic world. In 1200AD, the Fourth Crusade was launched, and an army of Crusaders marched on Constantinople. Following a pitched battle, the Western Crusaders were repelled and the Venetian Doge who had planned the sack of Constantinople was captured and executed. The Pope denounced the actions of the Crusaders, and placed the blame for the attack on the Venetians.

With threats from Western Catholics diminished for a while, the Byzantine Empire turned its full attention Eastwards, fighting for a hundred years with a series of devastating wars against the Seljuks. Eventually the warring ended in the mid 1300s, when the Byzantine Empire sacked the city of Hamadan, the Western capital of the Seljuks. The Seljuk Empire began to collapse, ultimately leaving a vast sprawl of warring nations in the Middle East as a bulwark against further invasion.

By 1600AD, the Byzantines were still powerful, but plagued with internal strife, other empires in Europe were able to colonize the new world, bringing in valuable resources for their homelands, but the Byzantines in their Mediterranean prison were restricted to their european holdings. With the Advent of gunpowder too, was formed a new type of warfare, one that the Byzantines were quick to adopt, embracing their historical past of cutting-edge military doctrine.

By 1800AD, The Byzantine borders had shrunk drastically, smaller than their present day borders, populist revolutions in America and France too, had shaken up the social order of the Empire. Agitation for Democracy reached a fever pitch, and a number of Dukes and Army generals revolted in favour of a representative Democracy style of government, a three year war ensued which resulted in the banishment of the Emperor to Russia.

the 20th Century brought it's own challenges, in the crucible of war, communism, and fascism, the Byzantine people stood strong, and was able to reach the 21st Century intact, even gaining some territory in the Balkans following the great wars of the late Industrial era.

Now they seek to do the same, continue to survive throughout the annals of history. The Byzantine Army is one of the most powerful, but their people are largely apathetic, their government is bloated and rife with corruption.

Government & Economy

Capital City: Constantinople (Istanbul)
Form of Government: Parliamentary Democratic Republic (Dominant Party Democracy, ruling party Neo-Conservative in ideology)
Head of Government: President Alexios Koulas
Head of State: President Alexios Koulas
How would you describe the political climate in your nation?: As one of the longest-lived nations in the world, Byzantium is also one of the most stable, it has withstood every catastrophy of history, and continues to do so.

GDP and GDP per Capita: 51,894 USD per capita. 7.213Bn USD nominal (so very economically powerful, but not USA/China tier superpower.)
What is your nation’s economic system?: Capitalism, light regulations, lots of subsidies for businesses.
What is the current status of your economy (Growing, Recession, Stagnating.): Currently growing.

Military

How many active and reserve personnel: 1.2 million active.
What percentage of your nation’s GDP is spent on the military?: 2.7%
How would you rate the training level of your military (1-10): 7-7.5/10, very disciplined and well drilled, but otherwise pretty average.
