Good lord, why would anyone use Depleted Uranium as a standard service round?

Boredom. Because I thought it'd be funny to design one that could realistically be fired. Because this is NS.

I used and still use 5.56 and 7.62 NATO as well for service weapons, and due to interchangeability and STANAG concerns, most service rifles used in the GRCS can be rechambered to fire either 5.56/6.35 or 6.35/7.62.

The 6.35x48 GRCS is intended for shorter engagement ranges against body armor, primarily to be used in close range urban environments where higher-ups in the GRCS decided that the 7.62 was "too much" and 5.56 was "too little."

So an intermediate round size was developed, with the representative type being a round that has a steel core and zinc coating with depleted uranium tip, using a double-base propellant made up of RDX and nitroguanidine encased in a copper-washed steel shell.

In practice, it's mainly used by the Remnant internal police forces and some special forces as assault and scare tactic ammunition, and isn't expected to ever be used en masse for the following reasons:
- Impracticality
- Expense
- "war crimes"
- Literally no other country is dumb enough to adopt it, so STANAG concerns
