One Killed in Öleçi Street Clash
2017 October 24
Gheri Öbaagh
The evenings following the national election have seemed to not have simmered down the tension in Öleçi, with violent confrontations continuing between ardent Volghari Nationalists and some members of Volghari-Newreyan street gangs. Tensions seemed to reach a new height in the Williamstown district of Öleçi last night following an anti-Asuran demonstration. The demonstration started off peacefully at roughly noon, with protestors heard singing the national anthem and other patriotic ballads such as The Burning of the Bridge and Khan.
As the sun set and alcohol was added to the mix, the mood quickly soured. A group of pro-Orton counter-protestors approached the demonstration and an argument was quick to spring forth. This argument fell further south when one of the counter protestors grabbed the jacket of the nationalist with whom he was arguing with, who responded by punching the man in the head. What followed soon afterward was yet another street brawl.
Locals were quick to join the fray, with many taking the side of the counter protestors. The brawl continued until anti-riot police were able to arrive on the scene and break up the event.
James Aalegh, 24, a counter-protestor with alleged ties to certain criminal groups within the city was killed in the brawl. It is believed that after rushing to join the fray he caught a punch to the temple, causing him to stumble and fall. When he fell, it is held that he cracked his head on the road and fell unconscious. He was declared dead at 3:03am after being rushed to hospital.
15 arrests have been made, with 3 charges of assault and 1 of murder levied.
