NATIONALISTS ANNOUNCE MERGER WITH MIDRASIA FIRST

Image
Nationalist leader Patrice Noutale has proposed the
creation of a new Midrasian nationalist movement.

Lotrič, Midrasia - The Midrasian National Party has announced its intentions to merge with the Midrasia First Party ahead of the 2017 general election later this year.
The announcement was made after months of speculation by political annalists amidst the decline in popularity of the MNP. The party, which has run into a degree of controversy in recent years for its alleged racism and ties to white supremacist groups, failed to recover its electoral performance which has been in consistent decline since 2003. By contrast, Midrasia First, formed in 2006 as an anti-immigration party has been going from strength to strength, especially in light of the formation of the Asuran Community. Data suggests that Midrasia First has in recent years been attracting an increasing amount of support from traditionally MNP voting communities, leading many to speculate Midrasia First would inevitably overshadow the MNP.

The Midrasian National Party was formed in 1959 as a successor to the National Coalition Party which governed from 1937-1956, during the midst of the red scare. The Midrasian right never truly recovered from the splinter of the NCP, with the majority of conservative support going to the more socially-liberal UDA. Despite securing between 20-14 seats in elections between 1960 and 1980, the party began to decline as supporters switched to the UDA. Many believed to party to be too extreme and in some areas outright racist. By 2000, the party was only managing to secure around 5 seats in the Public Assembly and in the 2013 general election, only secured 2. This electoral performance contrasts with a rise in support for smaller political parties in recent years, with the Libertarians, Socialists and Greens gaining an increasing vote share since 2001. Only the MNP and Workers' Party have seen a decline in support, with many putting this down to public gaffes, allegations of party corruption and the extreme views of each party.

In light of this decline in support, party leader Patrice Noutale had proposed increased cooperation between right-wing Midrasian parties, pointing to the Libertarians and Midrasia First as potential partners. Whilst Libertarian leaders declined to enter into such arrangements, Noutale garnered widespread praise from many in the Midrasia First Party, suggesting that greater cooperation could bring about a new nationalist movement in Midrasia. Despite initial desires to maintain individual parties, the declining support of the MNP led many to suggest a party merger would be the only solution. With Noutale announcing his retirement from politics upon the 2017 election, members of the MNP voted overwhelmingly (by 84%) to join Midrasia First, uniting the existing MNP delegates within the assembly with their Midrasia First counterparts. Many on the right hope this new union will allow the Midrasian right to gain considerable support within the election later this year.

32nd Annual Policy Summit Begins in Neuaddduwiau

Today marks the official beginning of the 32nd WACO Annual Policy Summit, which is this year being held in the Lhaeraidh capital city of Neuaddduwiau. Though the delegations arrived in the city several days ago and met with the Teyrn who welcomed them on an informal basis, and a preliminary reading of the agenda which took place shortly after, the actual talks and events surrounding them will start today. Politically speaking there is no grand opening ceremony, however large scale public events are taking place to which all WACO citizens have been invited, which include various public and cultural figures who are hosting a series of entertainments throughout the city.

There was a brief photo opportunity with the press this morning as the delegates gathered outside the Palasyllywodraeth for the summit proper, and television cameras were on hand to capture their arrival. A public statement was then made by Raglaw-Cadlywydd Lyr O'Shae, one of tir Lhaeraidd's leading air force commanders, welcoming the citizens of WACO to the city and announcing the commencement of the talks. A further statement is expected this evening once the day's talks conclude summarising what has been discussed and what has been agreed.

Meanwhile the streets of our ancient capital city were packed, not only with merry-making Lhaeraidh, but also with our esteemed guests and friends, the citizens of Crylante and Navack. A number of open air concerts are scheduled to take place throughout the city which feature performances of all kinds from the finest musicians from throughout WACO. In addition to the musical performances traditional Lhaeraidh fairs which include food festivals, theatrical performances, and competitions in traditional Lhaeraidh sports such as archery, caber tossing, sword dancing, shot put, and the hammer toss. The day was declared a national holiday so as to allow school children to participate in many of the events.

Meanwhile near the Crylantean and Navackian embassies fairs and expos focussing on those countries' cultures and history have been arranged, with leading artists, musicians, and actors having been invited to participate in live creative performances. Not only that but these cultural fairs include an open air market selling hand crafted and bespoke goods which show not only the quality, but also diversity of WACO and its partner's goods. The whole aim of this particular endeavour is to bring the citizens of WACO together in a sense of shared achievement and pride, while also boosting mutual understanding and knowledge of our cultures.

National News Summary

246 PRA Casualties In Gilesgate's Heaviest Day of Fighting

After what is now widely regarded as the most vicious day of fighting since the battle to retake Gilesgate began the PRA has published its casualty figures. According to the War Office they lost 246 personnel within the space of twenty four hours after beginning the most difficult phase of the battle yet, the effort to retake the heavily fortified and recently reinforced northern districts of the city; the exact figures for ArKav fighters lost remains unknown. This figure slam a final stamp of verification on the claims by many observers and participants that yesterday was the worst day of fighting yet seen in Gilesgate.

With so much at stake and the humiliation of last week's reinforcement of ArKav's positions right under the PRA's nose the armed forces advancing into Gilesgate were spurred on by the need to redeem their failure and to bring an end to the brutal struggle for the city. More than anything though the PRA are motivated by the desire to restore peace; the people of Gilesgate they say have suffered enough, if by the grim determination of the common soldier they can prevail and secure the city then maybe the refugees who fled south can return home and try to rebuild. But at this point is seems like that eventuality is a long way off.

There can be no doubt however that the PRA troops remain determined, what once felt like youthful idealism and, perhaps yes a little naivety, now feels like the cynical and fatalistic determination of men and women who simply want to get the job done. Which is more admirable, it is hard to say, on the one hand the idealism and hope of the early days brought them victory in the southern districts and gave them the courage to start the fight; on the other the fatalistic determination has given them the resolve to see it through to the bitter end.

Travelling around the city today from unit to unit it seemed like every squad had lost someone, someone's brother, or sister, someone's child. One young Sergeant told me that his section had suffered three casualties the evening before to sniper fire as they approached the Safi Bridge; this same Sergeant told me he was twenty four, to my eyes he looked older, his youth hidden by the grime of war and the bitter resentment one gains from watching their friends die. Even so he told me that he could not hate his enemy; ArKav are using boys now, he says, taken from the Cadets and military schools children as young as fourteen are being given weapons and told to fight. He has a fifteen year old brother, and wonders whether he will end up fighting this war too.

The streets of PRA secured Gilesgate are quiet now, even as the battle rages on to the north. The occasional medical evac vehicle rushes past transferring those too badly wounded from the front line medics to handle to a medical centre established in the Financial District, but other than that all is calm. Streets I had seen fought over from hours at a time are now devoid of human life, scattered with rubble and empty bullet casings, the bodies now mercifully cleared away, the discarded weapons too are gone, the larger ones remain disfigured by thermite. No-one wants to see them reused.

Further north lies a mystery zone; the PRA have had to stop taking journalists up that far, too many casualties and ArKav either have no regard for them, or their soldiers are unable to tell the difference. So we must make do with the stories that soldiers relieved from the front tell us, and what interviews we can get out of the lines of captured ArKav fighters being escorted into the internment camp just outside the city. It seem to me that two types of men walk in those defeated lines heading south, the grim faced veterans who signed up to serve when ArKav was still a branch of state and who have stuck with it because they had no other choice, or the fresher faced recruits who have signed on since and genuinely believe in the misguided ideology of apartheid.

'Leaky Leo'

'FAVOURS' FROM MR VAUBAN

Image

RECENT investigations by our crack team of dogsbodies here at Picayune's secret Headquarters, (Lotric, Midrasia, 12 Baccalaur, the white building on the corner of the high street) have uncovered a whole new swathe of information regarding the dirty dealings of a one Mr Charles Vauban.
Mr Vauban, presumably some form of government head honcho, bigwig, administration person appears in recent years to have had numerous dealings with several individuals of the shady nature. Mr Vauban also appears to have gone so far as to taken money off of these people in return for 'favours'.

Now, when we mean 'favours', we here at le Picayune are not exactly going to poke through Mr Vauban's private life once again (although that in itself is a story of its own... see Picayune 897). However reports suggest that Mr Vauban has been providing 'access' to influence within the Midrasian political system. This does not merely extend to simply lobbying, Mr Vauban has even allowed his backers a place on his oversees visit, providing his friends a 'leg up' on the competition. One incident involved the Prime minister providing insider access to two business officials from a a shipping company which we will not name (it rhymes with Serco) on an official ambassadorial visit to Vrnallia. It was believed that these officials were interested in bidding on a contract to expand one of Vrnallia's shipping ports.

In another incident, on an official trip to the Aquidish capital of Torden, the Prime minister was alleged to have spent more time in private meetings with media officials rather than actually preparing for the day's negotiations. That would explain his appearance on the day as 'tired and emotional' as described in a previous issue (Picayune 902). Nevertheless, it was not simply his friends in the media who gained access to such as conference, but also one of Mr Vauban's biggest backers in the 2013 election, Raymonde Calligule of Assoluto motors. Not only was Mr Calligule in Torden to discuss a new contract for a new manufacturing plant, but also to discuss personally with Mr Vauban his desire for the government not to pass the new 'Clean Car Bill'. The bill which would have put stricter limits on car pollution and mandated the phasing out of diesel and petrol by 2050 was voted down by the PSD in November. An insider within Vauban's team who wished to remain anonymous has alleged that at the meeting in Torden, Mr Vauban was offered a significant amount of money both for personal use and his reelection campaign later this year.

Now, we here at le Picayune pride ourselves on our etiquette when reporting on stories of this nature, and as such we reached out to Mr Vauban for comment before publishing this story. For whatever reason Mr Vauban and his team declined to comment on our investigative work. Of course, responding to emails from journalistic outlets must be low on ones list of priorities when they have more important things to do.... Like ensuring business associates get back stage access to all your oversees meetings, or organising that big corporate dinner to discuss policy direction, or catching up with 'old chums' in the media.... (I think we get the point, Ed.)

National News Summary

UPDATE: Battle for Gilesgate

The fight for Gilesgate continues into its 37th day today with PRA forces finally making significant headway in capturing the North Docklands despite the heavy reinforcement of the area by ArKav forces last week. Several large structures, including the warehouse complex of TruPack, the major import and export firm which operated in Gilesgate before the war, have been captured by PRA forces. In an additional boon to the Araabyne efforts a series of cleared parking lots and container storage areas which were being used by ArKav artillery and mortar teams have now been cleared as well, diminishing the enemy’s capability in this regard.

According to Major Ngomo over twenty mortars were captured or destroyed with four out of the five 105mm howitzers deployed in the areas cleared now in PRA hands. In what Ngomo describes as a ‘double victory’ these light artillery pieces were captured intact and with a full complement of shells. The remaining gun was hooked up to a truck for transit when PRA forces attacked the position and was able to evade capture; but the sentiment of the soldiers involved is that four out of five is far better than expected, and going with Ngomo’s rhetoric it actually counts as a score of eight to one. I hadn’t the heart to correct the man on his maths.

The clearing of these major artillery and mortar positions now means that ArKav have lost their ability to effectively deploy such weapons within the Docklands, since the remaining territory is unsuitable for large calibre artillery deployment, lacking the clear space and sighting lines required. This will surely sting and if the PRA forces can capitalise on this victory and capture the remaining areas of the docklands from ArKav the entire eastern edge of the city will be denied them, threatening their defence of the remaining districts and giving PRA mobile units clear access to the farmlands north of the city.

Despite these setbacks ArKav seems determined to defend the city to the last; claims that they have started to rely upon boys as young as fourteen are no longer rumours or estimates but confirmed facts after a unit in Youth Brigade uniforms was captured in the Zeeland Industrial District. The unit in question has since been transferred to a special internment facility where they are being questioned and debriefed; the administration has assured the press and public that any child soldiers captured or found wounded will be treated with the utmost care and compassion. According to the transcripts of the questioning of the Youth Brigade POWs the boys volunteered when asked by an ArKav recruiter, a practice which they say is becoming more common, and not just among boys but also female youth organisations.

The issue of child soldiers has been a concern since the outset of the brush war; in the past rebel groups in Kavo have employed them without reserve, and a small number of captured SUSa fighters early in the war were found to be as young as sixteen. However on the whole the region has avoided the blight of such desperation and cruelty since the end of the Third Brush War in 1980. Initially concerns were raised that SUSa and other rebel groups in Kavo might start using child soldiers once attrition started to bite, but no-one anticipated that it would in fact be ArKav that stooped to that level first. The Dawkins regime has been remarkably tight lipped on social media and with the press, even within its own territory, so little is known at this point about what the situation really is beyond the battle lines.

While pressure will surely mount on ArKav internationally due to this development Truman Kumbukane of the PDRS has refused to rule out the possibility of his faction using similar tactics, stating that it is the responsibility of every Sheeran regardless of age or gender to fight for freedom.

SPRINGTIME OF THE NATION

Image
Protesters gather at the February monument.

Lotrič, Midrasia - Protests have broken out across the capital following allegations published in an article by the satirical magazine Le Picayune regarding political corruption.
The article in question, titled: "'Favours' from Mr Vauban" alleged that the Prime minister had given a select number of private corporations and donors access to classified diplomatic meetings overseas and at Parliament. The article also suggested that Mr Vauban had accepted large sums of money from a number of lobbying groups, most notably Assoluto motors, in exchange for influence within the Midrasian political system. Mr Vauban denies the accusations and has called the article in question 'fake news'. Nevertheless, thousands have gathered in the streets of the capital calling for the Prime minister's resignation along with social, political and economic reform over a range of issues.

Whilst the event, named by protesters as the Midrasian Spring aims to ensure the resignation of the Prime minister, since demonstrations began yesterday, several other groups have become involved in the event. Groups such as the Socialist Party and the political reform group SPGS have joined demonstrations protesting a range of issues such as a perceived lack of government funding, the erosion of labour laws and general political apathy among youth groups. Many have suggested the wide range of issues covered by the protests ensures it is doomed to failure through disorganisation and lack of a coherent message. However, others have suggested the wide audience attracted by protesters in merely two days, and the wider public demand for a corruption investigation could be a sign of things to come.

Image
The chirp in question, sent out by hacktivist group Incognito.

One of the groups involved in the ongoing protests is the hacktivist group Incognito. The group, which claims to have over 1 million members worldwide, put out a statement on the social media site Chirper claiming to have 'far more' information regarding the Prime minister than was released within the Picayune article. A following chirp issued earlier today has indicated that this information would be released this weekend if the Prime minister remains in office. The hacktivist group has in a number of other chirps also claimed that it holds information on a number of other political figures across Aeia. However, as of yet has not disclosed which individuals are involved, or whether such information would be released. We reached out to the government for a statement on the matter, however they declined to comment.

We also reached out to the PSD's coalition partners, the Liberal League however they too declined to comment on the issue, however they have reassured reporters that their press office will release a statement by the end of the week. Furthermore, both parties have agreed to suspend the upcoming parliamentary debate regarding the small business tax relief bill until the current situation has subsided. We do have information however that the opposition Alydian Democratic Union party will be submitting a bill to investigate the affairs of the Prime minister. The spokesperson for the party said that they already have contact with a number of other parties willing to support the bill and that it will be submitted at the earliest possible date.

We will bring you more updates on this story as it progresses.

In other news

Protests widen across Midrasia: Following the outbreak of protests in Lotrič, several other protests have broken out in cities across Midrasia, with many more planned for later within the week. Cities with planned or active protests include: Lotrič, Berghelling, Hiverbourg, Almiaro...

The Asuran Spring?: With current protests underway in Midrasia and hacktivist group incognito claiming to have information on a number of politicians across Asura and Aeia, we ask: Are these protests limited to Midrasia, or is this the start of something wider...

Top spot for Midrasia: Midrasia has officially finished top of its group in this year's edition of footballing friendlies. Despite some upsets against the CPSN and Tyronova, manager Klaes Van Emerick said his team, most of which were youngsters, should be proud of their performances...

The Newrey Globe || Friday 07.04.2017

TIM F. BEALE FOUND GUILTY OF COWARDICE!
David Risikko

In what has become an unquestionably landmark case in Newreyan legal history, the case of High Court of Cyningburgh v. Timothy F. Beale has not only given a guilty verdict in a case of cowardice in almost 50 years, but it has also attracted much media attention due to the events that preceded the case and other alleged mishandling of both evidence, witness statements, and with opinions being used as fact, among other accusations. Now, for international readers of the Globe this may be a bit confusing due to the information of the case being kept largely behind closed doors, officially that is, so it is unlikely that all the details would be very clear.
Image
Timothy F. Beale

What is very clear is that this case has effectively made it almost impossible for a defendant to use mental health as a form of defence or even a mitigating circumstance, due to the fact Beale claimed that he had been experiencing a flashback of PTSD when he fled from the Saraibian gunmen during the Old Town Attacks during Heroes' Weekend late last year. Having been posted on guard at the Aquidish embassy, bystanders reported a armed man dressed in Newreyan military uniform fleeing the scene, without so much of firing a shot. Beale was found almost three miles from the embassy, cowering behind what had previously been an underground Gay Club, until it had been raided by National Policemen the previous month. He was immediately placed under arrest by Newreyan Landmight Police and charged with Cowardice in the face of the enemy, General Cowardice and was suspected of homosexuality.

Beale, who had previously seen combat during the brief Burmondsy Prison War in 1998, claimed that he had been suffering horrendous flashbacks as the gunmen closed by and, believing that the embassy staff had already been warned, quickly fled the scene, with him coming to a stop in front of an old gay club being circumstantial. Luckily for Beale, the charge of homosexuality failed to materialised, however he still face the damaging charge of Cowardice on two counts. The defence, headed by acclaimed and respected Newreyan human rights lawyer William Pitt, argued that it was irresponsible of the Landmight to keep a solider who was suffering from a mental illness within its service, even more so to place him on guard at an important embassy. They went on to argue that the Landmight should've been prepared for a soldier, who was known to be mentally ill, to experience such flashbacks and have fail safes should a guard abandon their post.

In response, the prosecution, led by a team of Landmight Legal Service personnel, claimed that it was made expressively clear to all potential recruits that the Landmight requires all personnel to announce whether they have faced difficulties following any deployment, so that they can be investigated and subsequently discharged, however Beale failed to do so and, as such, it wouldn't have been possible for the Landmight to know any mental challenges that Beale was facing. Not only that, but the Landmight has it written clearly on its recruitment forms that it does not recognise mental health as an effective argument when dealing with disobedience or other incidents.

Many of the issues with the trial was that the prosecution failed to show any of the supposed legal documentation that was signed by Beale to prove he was still mentally healthy, or even point out where in the recruitment forms that the Landmight wouldn't recognise mental health as an issue. Many outsiders watching the trial claim that the Landmight is using Beale as a means to make a pariah and an example out of him, while also being able to place the blame of the failings of the Embassy security on the shoulders of someone else.

Despite the mishandlings of the prosecution, the jury still returned with a guilty verdict and the judge sentencing Beale with the highest possible sentence, 20 years of imprisonment with no chance of parole and having to wear the White Feathers on him at all times, to remind others of his cowardice. The punishment itself has been lambasted as too harsh, ridiculous, and complex, however it has been upheld. It is without a doubt that William Pitt will appeal the verdict, however until that time, Beale is to be taken to HMP Alcove, located on one of the Ghiss islands in southern Majula.

GREAT NOAIDI AUTHORIZES ETHNIC CLEANSING OF THE JOHKK PEOPLE

10-4-2017

Image

Yesterday, the Great Noaidi, the spirirtual leader of Johka explained in a press conference how he had been given a task by Beaivi herself, goddess of the Sun, how the urbanized Johkk people, and their different lifestyle proved a threat towards the prosperity of Johka. The noaidi interpretated that this was some kind of warning and that all Johkk have to be killed or else the rest of the world will be punished for their misdeeds. The government, agrees and sides with the will of the gods and goddesses, and recognizes the Johkk people as an inferior one.

All of the property belonging to the Johkk city-dwellers will be liquidated and destroyed. The government sent out a message this night, urging every Johkk to report themselves to the nearest Poliisasadji (police-station), and every Johkk not reporting themselves will be deemed an outlaw and anyone will be able to shoot him/her.

The rest of the world has yet to respond to the actions put into motion by the Jokki government, but hopefully, the other leaders of the world will side with the thruth and assist in this slaughter of the Johkk, the people who disobeyed Beaivi herself and got punished in a fair way. Gihppu, which always side with the thruth and the will of the gods, supports the actions of the government, drastic, yet necessary, but anything to bring Johka out of the shade that is the backwaters of Aeia and into the sun that is the prosperirous future that lay ahead.

National News Summary

UPDATE: Battle for Gilesgate

After another bloody weekend of fighting the PRA seem to be making the final push to capture the remaining ArKav positions in the northern sectors of Gilesgate. On Saturday unconfirmed reports were received that PRA units under the field command of Major Andreas van Kier had secured the last ArKav strongholds within the Docklands, bringing an end to the fighting in that district; these reports were confirmed on Sunday by General van Beyer as well as further claims that PRA troops had pushed into Zeeland and Maldets. This signals a major breakthrough in PRA efforts within the city and could result in a victory much sooner than initially anticipated, especially now that PRA forces have a direct route through the city into the grasslands to the north.

The fighting in the northern half of the Docklands was fierce and brutal; PRA forces succeeded in destroying and dislodging ArKav artillery and mortar teams from the District last Thursday, however the bulk of the districts remaining defenders remained making progress slow and difficult. According to some reports ArKav had used their armoured fighting vehicles, such as the Krygsman, to form roadblocks, barricades, and improvised bunkers in the streets - a decision apparently made so that fuel could be syphoned from them for use in more critical mobile units. Even immobile these vehicles with the turret mounted heavy weapons proved to be fearsome obstacles which had to be picked apart using infantry based anti-armour weapons.

Now that the PRA holds the Docklands the next step seems to be that they will consolidate their positions in the District and move to hit Maldets from the East, increasing the pressure of ArKav defenders in that district who are already under attack by Ngomo's forces to the South. According to aerial reconnaissance the Eastern edge of Maldets as yet lacks the same barricades and defences which had been constructed elsewhere, clearly implying that the defenders had not anticipated the loss of the Docklands so soon.

Government Condemns Jokha

The Prime Minister, Julian Ulrics, and Foreign Minister, James Carswell, have publicly condemned the decision by the government of Johka to initiate what it has called 'ethnic cleansing' of the Johkk people. In a joint press conference the Prime Minister described the casual and matter of fact way in which the Great Noaidi announced the new policy as "Nothing short of barbaric, with a callous disregard for human life and cultural tolerance not even shown by the ancient Fiorentine Empire." Mr Ulrics went on to issue a formal ultimatum to the Johkan government demanding that they abandon the policy of ethnic cleansing or face military action from Sagite, up to and including an invasion, and has put the Sagitean armed forces on standby.

MIDRASIA CALLS FOR JOINT NATION TASK FORCE TO DEAL WITH JOHKA

Image
Thierry Millón, a known critic of the PM, introduced the bill to condemn Johka.

Lotrič, Midrasia - Parliament has called for the formation of a joint-nation task force in order to deal with the ongoing situation in Johka, officials have stated. The rogue state, situated in Frigidarum, declared yesterday its intention to 'ethnically cleanse' the Johkk peoples from its territory. Immediately following the declaration, Midrasia withdrew its ambassador and under Article XXV of the Midrasian Bill of Rights took the Johkan ambassador to Midrasia into police custody for questioning. A bill introduced to Parliament today by representative Thierry Millón condemning the state passed with almost unanimous support. The Midrasian government stated it is now working on creating a joint-nation task force to deal with the Johkan government.

Many however criticised the Condemnation bill as 'haphazard' in not waiting for the publication of an official bill by the Vauban government. Critics have suggested that Millón's introduction of the bill was merely a ploy to boost his popularity in the wake of corruption allegations levelled at the Prime minister, claims which Mr Millón ardently denies. Despite this, the bill received the support of 397 of the 400 members of the Assembly and 99 of the 100 members of the senate. The Bill not only calls for the ending of any ongoing trade relations with Johka, but also calls for direct military action against the state, should they refuse to call off their actions. The government as of yet has given no indication of when or even if this ultimatum will be issued.

Within the last 3 hours, the government issued a statement, calling for the Johkan government to abandon their actions and to respect the welfare and right to life of the Johkk peoples. The government has suggested that anybody with relatives or friends affected by the Johkan governments actions should get in touch and aid the Johkk peoples' in escaping the country. The Midrasian government also called on Frestovenia and Yvilonia to condemn the actions of their neighbour and provide refuge for any Johkk peoples fleeing persecution. The Midrasian government also reached out the 'civilised nations of Aeia' to form a joint task force to deal with Johka, should they refuse to call off their actions. The address called upon the nations of the Asuran Community, WACO, Ternca, Grierland, Den Helder and Timeria to agree to an intervention in the state, should the Johkan government refuse to call off their plans.

Crisis in Johkan throws wrench into election season

Torden - Spring has sprung and election season unofficially has begun, at least it appeared to for about two days. While official election season does not begin until the King dissolves the Senate, unofficially the parties and politicians have been using any platform they can to get their messages through to the people. For example yesterday saw an odd back and forth between Asuran Parliament Delegates about how to best run the kingdom while the topic of discussion was the proposed Asuran Space Agency.

This was all fine and good and it was being floated around that the Prime Minister had asked King Matteo IV to dissolve the senate later this week so that campaigning could begin officially. However now the word around Hewlett Palace is that the Senate might have to stay around a bit longer than usual in order to debate and vote on an authorization of force measure.

The spiritual leader of Johka, the Great Noaidi, has declared that he received a vision from the sun goddess to ethically cleanse the Johkk people. This has received the full backing of the Johkan government, which has begun preparations to carry out the Great Noaidi's wishes. The Johkk people tend to live in urban areas and the government has started to seize their land and property.

Prime Minister David Corbett has denounced the actions of the Johkan government saying that "the government of Johka has started down a dark path from which there is no return. There is absolutely no sane reason to kill people based on their ethnicity. I join my counterparts around the world in condemning these actions and demanding an immediate halt to them. Aquidneck will do weigh all options in what to do going forward."

A bill authorizing a fund be set up to assist in the crisis has been introduced by the government and is making its way speedily through the Senate. The Minister of Finance has said that the treasury will give 15 million shillings with the option for more when the fund is officially created. He also encouraged Aquidish citizens to donate to the fund, if they can.

The Foreign Affairs Minister called upon Midrasian, Newreyian, Ohenian, and Vrnallian ambassadors to discuss the threat and what action they should take. Ambassador Jean Picate from Midrasia was reportedly in the Foreign Affairs Ministry for several hours. Senior members of the Defense Council were also seen around the building. The government is limited in its actions militarily if the Senate is dissolved for elections. The new Senate would be sworn in in early June and it would be at least a couple of weeks before things settle enough to begin debate on Johka. by law the King must dissolve the Senate by May 3rd. It is looking increasingly likely that campaign season will be shorter this year. Who that hurts and who that helps is up in the air at this point.

Government "Displeased" with Johka Situation
Miedzi Sosa, 2017/10/04

The Council and Chamber have passed a joint motion condemning the Republic of Johka for "what can only sensibly be called the start of a campaign of genocide" against the Johkk people. The condemnation follows the likes of Castrix and Midrasia in calling out the government of Johka, which claims its actions are motivated by religion.

This motion was passed with unanimous support, with the sole Independent and Nationalist Representatives, as well as some from other parties, not being present for the vote. The motion is now expected to be followed by a vote on cutting off all trade with Johka which is also expected to pass.

The motion not only condemns Johka, but also calls on other nations, particularly within the Asuran Community, to also join Vrnallia in condemning the Johkan government. The motion does not go so far as that of the Midrasians, whose condemnatory bill calls for military action as a last resort, but does echo its call for aid to Johkk people trying to escape the country. The motion does pledge that Vrnallia will provide the Coast Guard's largest vessel, the Hagón (Ascent), to aid any international evacuation force, and leaves open the possibility of accepting refugees from Johka.

The issue is expected to be raised in the Asuran Community by Aquidish DAPs in the near future. We spoke with Socialist DAP Svargu Hanjes earlier today, who told us: "should the DAPs of Aquidneck wish to raise this most urgent issue, I and my fellow Socialist DAPs will certainly offer them our support. I in particular shall raise the suggestion of an indefinite confiscation of Johkan trade goods passing through Asuran waters. We must confront Johka with all measures short of war."

So far, the Johkan government has not responded to these condemnations.

Cuirpthean Government Hinting At New Plans In The Opal Ocean
Image

Recently, the great leader of Cuirpthe, James Callaghan II, has announced plans for an operation in the Opal Ocean.
Taking advantage of the need to shrink the fleet heading to the RIMOPAC exercise, a small fleet will be heading to an area west of Rennekka.
Currently the project is under tight wraps as the government has revealed little pertaining to the nature of the mission, but promises that it will bring great prosperity to Cuirpthe.
A stealthy fisherman was able to provide an eyewitness report of what he saw out in the ocean."Yeah, i saw this big fleet heading east. They seem to be building some structure out there. As long as it don't interfere with my fishing, I couldn't care less."

This recent activity in the Cuirpthean government has surprised some, knowing that they tend to isolate themselves from international politics, identifying as neutral in the Johka Situation.

Sagite

National News Summary

Sagite Prepares for War

The Ministry of Defence has today issued full mobilisation orders to all branches of the Sagitean military in preparation for the military intervention in Johka. The armed forces collectively boast some 50,000 troops equipped with some of the most advanced military equipment on the planet, and the mobilisation order has been followed by the announcement of additional emergency funds to support a prospective war effort. Once mobilised the armed forces will begin combat drills and should the ultimatum be ignored or rejected they will soon find themselves being deployed to the Frigidari nation.

Whether or not Sagite will be operating directly as part of the proposed international task force, or independently, remains to be seen however the Prime Minister, Mr Ulrics, has stated emphatically that should a cooperative effort fail to materialise unilateral action will not be ruled out. The present administration's stance on human rights has been quite clear throughout its time in office, with numerous concerns having been voiced over the situation in Kavo, and actions taken in an effort to minimise the human cost; it is not therefore surprising that Targoviste has decided that unilateral action against Johka is an option should talks fail to result in swift and effective action.

The major issue Sagite faces here however is not the diplomatic or political wrangling, but rather the practical concerns. Sagite's military is comparatively tiny, and though well equipped and necessarily well trained, the economy of scale means that any military action halfway across the globe will be costly and a logistical challenge. Sagite certainly has the naval power to project itself that far, but given the geographical area covered by Johka that power will have to be applied in a very concentrated form against very specific targets; for all its modern technology the Sagitean military cannot negate the impact of numbers.

At this stage the prospect of an international task force is a vey likely outcome; already major powers such as Aquidneck and Midrasia have stated their displeasure and have made calls for action - however it seems clear that Ulric's government intends to commit one hundred percent to military intervention to prevent a genocide in Johka regardless of external support or the lack thereof. Having such a small military force which is used to rapid mobilisation and deployment it is likely that Sagitean forces will be the first into the combat zone, but how long they will be able to operate their effectively, and what impact they will have remains to be seen.

Preparations for a response to Johka's actions are not only military, the Foreign Ministry and International Development Office have been working closely together to pool humanitarian aid supplies. Everything from tents to tinned food are being rapidly gathered for dispatch to Johka in the wake of any military action; the Prime Minister seems to be directing his government in such a way that the kind of humanitarian crisis created by the war in Kavo is mitigated in Johka. Already a volunteer aid corps is being formed which it is hoped will lead the effort to built safe, comfortable, and sanitary refugee conditions for those displaced by the conflict.

ArKav Counterattack in Gilesgate

A sudden counterattack by ArKav forces in Gilesgate and the surrounding area threatens to jeopardise the PRA campaign to take the city. The surge of reinforcements to the beleaguered city initially acted to shore up defences and hold back what seemed like an inevitable advance into the city by PRA forces. Now however a little over a week later it seems ArKav's plan was altogether different. Beginning this morning ArKav units assaulted the PRA positions in previously secured districts, surging forward to engage a force which had steadily been pushing them back. Needless to say the sudden counterattack caught the PRA as much by surprise as it did the media reporting on the city.

The early stages of the counterattack seem to have been expertly coordinated with ArKav armoured units moving in with the support of flying battalions and infantry; however within three hours as their offensive ground on the organisation behind it seemed to have worn down, evidence of the old adage that the best laid plans never last past first contact. Regardless the approaching soldiers seem determined to rapidly regain lost ground and have succeeded in putting the PRA on the back foot. The only district in which ArKav have made no progress has been the recently captured Docklands, where van Kier's PRA forces managed to beat back simultaneous attacks from the North and West.

Fighting has intensified throughout the day as the PRA struggles to halt the ArKav advance and then straighten out the bulges in their lines; however there remains a degree of hope that the PRA will succeed. Since it began the ArKav advance has slowed significantly and several key vanguard units have now been blunted; the loss in materiel for ArKav is incredible thanks in large part to the PRA's tactic of highly mobile small anti-tank teams of four men who are able to rapidly move and ambush advancing armour. So it seems that the cost of ArKav's continued push south is being paid with interest as they continue to be ground down by the much more mobile and better supported defenders.

Close monitoring of the roads north of Gilesgate has also given the PRA cause for hope; no additional reinforcements are making their way into the city from the North, indicating that either ArKav has realise how much of a fluke their prior success was, or that they can afford to send no more. Without reinforcements, and will losses mounting it seems that all the PRA need to is continue to bleed ArKav forces, whittling them down in a simple game of numbers until they have insufficient manpower to mount and effective defence of the city's remaining districts.

National News Summary

Government Reforms Finalised, Implementation Begins

After three months of continuous debate and work among policy makers and politicians the process of hammering out the documents and terms of the government reform in tir Lhaeraidd is complete. Yesterday the Bonedd presented he finalised document to the Teyrn for his approval, and just minutes ago the Teyrn gave his assent in a momentous point in Lhaeraidh history, signing the document and affixing his seal to it rendering into law the changes therein which shall convert Asura's last absolute monarchy into a modern Parliamentary Democracy with a constitutional monarch as its figurehead. The document will officially come into force next Monday, triggering a general election, the first in tir Lhaeraidd's eleven hundred year history.

The reforms agreed to introduces a constitutional framework which leans heavily on the ancient Lhaeraidh concepts of personal freedom and economic liberty. The country is divided into Electoral Constituencies which are based around the boundaries of tir Lhaeraidd's traditional counties; each county is entitled to a number of representatives proportionate to its population relative to the number of seats available and the total population of the Teyrnas, a system which means on average each Member of Parliament (Aelod Seneddol) represents around 125,000 citizens, forming a legislative chamber of 800 representatives. Candidates are to be elected by a preferential voting system.

The Upper House of the legislative is now the Bonedd, an assemblage of tir Lhaeraidd's gentry. Membership is based upon paying an annual tithe to the government and anyone capable of paying the tithe can be a member; however the reforms place strict rules in place. Companies and corporations can only provide funds for a single member's tithe, while charities may fund two. Private citizens may pay their own tithe but members of the Bonedd cannot provide funds to pay for the tithe of another member. Additionally the proportion of Bonedd members belonging to each political party or who have their tithe funded in part by such a party may not exceed 50 per party.

The Head of Government shall now be elected by Parliament with each Aelod Seneddol allowed to run for the position and all are allowed to vote during the election. This election uses a similar preferential voting system and the winner is subsequently made Chancellor and leads the government. The Teyrn now operates as a figurehead of state and essentially as an extension of the Foreign Office, providing diplomatic services to the government; however the Chancellor must consult with the Teyrn once a week while in office, during which time the Teyrn may advise them but cannot instruct them.

Lhaeraidd Government Proposes Sanctions on Johka

The Teyrn and the interim Chancellor, Carwen mab Tiernan, have publicly condemned the actions of the government and so called 'religious leaders' of Johka today in what the Teyrn called a "Unified voice for humanity." Though bound by treaty will almost every nation in the world to remain neutral in military conflicts the government has been outspoken in its support for an international taskforce though made plain that tir Lhaeraidd could not be involved in it themselves. Instead the government has announced a series of punishing sanctions against the Johkan regime and key figures within it.

The sanctions imposed essentially freeze many Johkan assets, withdraw loans to their government and country, and cease foreign aid. In addition an embargo is expected to follow; further sanctions however would have to be negotiated in Canmyr-Weidhal since they fall under the purview of WACO authority. The sanctions already in place will no doubt bite hard, since Lhaeraidh markets make up a significant portion of the global trading, commerce, and finance picture; but a complete denial of service would be catastrophic for the Johkan government should it occur, since it would essentially lock the isolated country out of major international markets in which tir Lhaeraidd is involved.

Genocide in Johka!?
Chaos has erupted across Aeia after Johka's spiritual leader the 'Great Noaidi' claimed to have had direct contact with the so called Sun goddess Beaivi. Apparently the goddess Beaivi told the 'Great' Noaidi to "cleanse Johka of the Johkk people". Currently there are tens of thousands of Johkk people living in Johka, possibly even hundreds of thousands. There was an immediate response from governments, charities and other international organisations calling for the Johkan government to see sense. Chancellor Jørik Bernovik immediately issued a statement condemning the Johkan government: "We cannot allow atrocities to untouchec under the guise of culture and religion. We must dissolve unchecked traditions and emancipate all those we can from dogma." Strong condemnations have come from Midrasia, Vrnallia, Aquidneckand Sagite. Some of whom have threatened military intervention, whilst at the moment trade embargos and recalling of diplomats is all that has happened. The Imperial Assembly has been debating the strength of its intervention in the crisis since yesterday. Ohen's diplomatic envoy has already been recalled and his Johkan counterpart has been held in Ohen and prevented from departing. The whole of Aeia waits in anticipation of how this crisis will be resloved.

Newrey at it again?
Last week also saw the conviction of a Newreyian soldier of Cowardice in what has been described as a landmark case. By Ohenian standards the case was nothing short of a miscarriage of justice. Not much information was made publically available, the only part of the trial that was publically broadcast was the sentencing. However, those who were allowed to observe the legal proceedings have come forward to say that they believe evidence was mishandled and certain witness statements were misread and even altered. A spokesperson for the Imperial Justice Commision informed us that Ms. Agnes Khan and her Newreyan counterpart had spoken briefly on the phone and that the Newreyan ambassador had been called to the offices of the Vice-Chancellor.

Julia Ardstock, representative of the international mental health charity Headspace in Ohen had a comment for us. "Headspace has been campaigning for the last decade to spread awareness and gain those with mental health conditions the treatment they deserve and so desperately need. THis case flies in the face of everything that we stand for and believe. This is not the end of mental health awareness in Newrey, will campaign harder, lobby harder, and protest if we have to."

The day after the sentencing a crowd of some three hundred people gathered outside the Newreyian embassy in Bafu. Although their numbers have since fallen to just under a hundred the protesters still remain. The official police response has been issued and it is our belief that as long as the protest remains peaceful it won't be necessary.

March on Veleaz!
After a series of protests erupted in Midrasia last week a few thousand Ohenians have seized an opportunity to protest. A peaceful march was organised in the Northern border town of Jorukull. The protesters turned up in their droves. An official police report placed their numbers at nearly three thousand. The reason for their march? The liberation of Actis from Veleazan rule. Since the initial march some eight hundred people have remained camped on the border. The protest has been mostly peaceful, however police have made a dozen arrests as individuals began to throw projectiles at the border fence.

Another rally also occured this week, the 'Peace in Kavo' movement staged an official gathering in Eastern Bafu, on Ulf's Mound. Some five hundred individuals were in attendance. The rally started off with a few speakers and some chants. However, as the afternoon drew to a close the stage was prepared for a concert. Many famous Ohenian celebrities made appearances, including a set from the Sore Thumbs. As a result a petition for the Ohenian government to do something about the situation in the former Republic of Kavo has reached 80,000 signatures and is said to be debated in the Imperial Assembly some time next week.

ARMY CALLS FOR ALL ABLE BODIED MEN AND WOMEN TO 'WEAPONIZE'

11-4-2017

Image

This morning (local time), the Army called for every able bodied man and woman to report themselves to their nearest recuitment center. The conscripts will be given fastcourses on tactics, how to handle a weapon, and how to wage guerilla warfare, in the tundral and taigan landscapes of Johka and it is estimated that some two million concripts will be battle-ready in 36 hours. The military has taken this drastic decision due to the international response of the ethnic-cleansing recently conducted by the Johkan government. Several calls from foreign countries, such as Midrasia and Sagite, has demanded that the Johkan government step down from their righteous actions taken against the Johkk people, but the Johkan government will continue, in order to not bring destruction over humanity by the wrath of Beaivi.

All of the concripts are required to not be of Johkk descent in order to be able to report for duty. The estimated 2 million conscripts, will be organized into bihttás (units), with 2,000 conscripts each. Each conscipt will be given a JD-2 assault rifle (pictured) and the same uniform as used in the army. Several thousands of conscripts will be stationed along the Johkan-Frestovenian border, with anti-tank units scattered among them. The Johkan government have failed to amass any allies abroad and now stands alone against tens of nations. The condemning nations have threatened to militarily intervene in order to stop the cleansing.

But we, the proud and strong Johkan people, have something bigger than allies and diplomatic ties, we have our hope and our patriotism and love for our homeland, which is greater tha any nuclear bomb or main battle tank the enemy will be able to produce from its hate-generating cities and factories. We have been able to withstand such terrors before, such as the Newreyan imperialists. May Johka remain proud and strong, forever!

Senate approves military action, Security Council meets

Torden - The Senate voted overwhelmingly to authorize the government to move forward on military action to prevent the further genocide of the Johkk people in the nation of Johka. Aquidish forces have begun to mobilize and will be joining armed forces from Midraisa, Sagite, Newrey, and Ohen in what is being called Operation Snowstorm.

Sources tell us that the Defense Council has met with the the cabinet to discuss the operation moving forward. Prime Minister David Corbett has met with leaders from the major parties and they have all agreed to a basic plan moving forward regardless of the outcome of the upcoming Senate elections. Ambassadors and military attaches from the involved nations have been seen in the halls of Hewlett Palace meeting with senior officials from the Foreign Affairs and Defense Ministries. Sources tell us that naval vessels are being diverted and are sailing south. No word yet on how many soldiers will be deployed, but the Senate has given the Defense Council free reign in deciding.

The Senate also voted to approve the Johkk Fund which has been set up to aid the Johkk people in relocating. The treasury has deposited 15 million Shillings into the fund and has been authorized by the Senate to put 10 million more should the Minister of Foreign Affairs deem it necessary. In addition to the fund the Senate has also directed the Ministry of Finance to freeze any accounts associated with Johka or its leaders. Additionally any and all trade deals between Aquidish companies and the Johkan government have been suspended.

Jenný Anadottir new Director for Foreign Affairs and Trade; Arthur Troelsen new EERE Director; Steinsson to take the new CSE position

The United Storting/Remsting met just minutes ago to vote on the confidence of the current National Council members and to appoint replacements for the two retiring members, Mr. Reidus and Mr. Le Grande, as well as appointing someone to fill the newly created position of the Director for Culture, Sports and Equality. The electoral college consisted of the 225 members of the People's Assembly, the 51 members of the State's Assembly and three delegates from the Vanir Islands.

Jenný Anadottir was elected the new Director for Foreign Affairs and Trade, replacing her Trúathi Party comrade Silvanus Le Grande. The 31-year-old from Kattinge was elected by a strong majority over her rival Bjarne Mancini, gaining 221 votes to his 58. Anadottir's main policies were to continue the highly pacifist and humanist foreign policy of her predecessor, continuing to work to tackle climate change at the global level, but also to promote human rights around the world.

Arthur Troelsen was elected by a much smaller majority to the position of Director for Energy, Environment, Research and Education, gaining 140 votes to 139 votes in the college. As a member of the democratic socialist faction in the Socialist Party, it was hard for him to gain support over his more moderate and Third Way opponent David Agostini, however he pulled through after surprise endorsements by the Trúathi Party and Saria De Quintus, the Director for Justice, Police and Transport, who were won over by his devout environmentalism. He is the first mixed-race member of the council, being half-Valatinese on his mother's side, and has pledged to make university free in the Crylantian Federation.

Rikard Steinsson was unanimously elected as the Director for Culture, Sports and Equality, not counting 31 abstentions, partially because he was running uncontested. The Green Party leader was formerly a member of the People's Assembly for Lentini, but he was replaced by another member at the election. He is the first person not part of the "Big Four" to be elected to the council, and has pledged to close the gender pay gap, promote the arts and legally recognise intersex babies as neither male nor female.

The house has also renewed the terms of the speakers and deputy speakers of both houses, with Jens da Vinci (Farmers') and Doris Solberg (Reform) being appointed the Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the States' Assembly, and Marine Kasner (Reform) and Gaius Schmidt (Socialist) being appointed the Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the People's Assembly

Crylante condemns the Johkan Republic

A motion put forward by the Director for Finance Liana Vescovi to the Storting/Remsting to condemn the Johkan Republic for their genocide against the ethnic Johkk people has passed 223-2 in the People's Assembly and 51-0 in the States' Assembly, with the two Party for Crylantians MPA's stating that while they strongly oppose genocide, they feel that Crylante should stick to it's neutrality and not get involved, a move which was called "absolutely shocking" by Arthur Troelsen. The condemnation means that Crylante will refuse to trade with the nation at all, which it often employs to nations with major human rights violations.

In other news, the National Council has congratulated it's ally tir Lhaeraidd on it's switch from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.

President Zhukov has declared that the Rosskavan navy, trained and home in arctic environments, is willing to be deployed against Johka due to their violations of human rights and aggressive stand to the world. 'Such a nation', he declared, 'should not have the right to exist'. The right thing to do is to act. I hereby offer my services to the countries directly threatened by the cruel politics of Johka. The Rosskavan navy is currently docked at the city of Capac.

In other news, singer Stefan Károlyi from the southeastern city of Les Confés has already established himself as a potential candidate for the third Aeia Song Contest. 'I am full of confidence. My earlier songs, which have only been released in Rosskava and Ternca because they were sung in the national language, have been a great success in the domestic area. I believe I might do well at international level.' Károlyi's application is the earliest one has ever applied for a song contest. During the second contest, held in Rosskava, the nation shall be represented by a powerful and emotional song, composed by the internationally famous Thomas Bergersen.
