Viktor Lovász, made several announcements in a three hour long video aired on Granzerian television.

THE GRANZERY OBSERVER
VIKTOR LOVASZ TO RETURN TO PRESIDENCY.
In a three-hour long livestreamed announcement between Granzerian President Viktor Lovász, Supreme Commander Josca Batori, Vice President Linda Pásztor and other government officials, a territorial defense scheme was announced, and the future of Granzery was agreed upon.

Viktor Lovász and Linda Pásztor, who have spent the last few days in Ultrecht, Rohst, returned to Csongrad today amongst much fanfare and speculation. In the Politburo Offices (now named as Parliament Building) of Csongrad, a several hour long stream was hosted over the course of which multiple announcements were made regarding the future of Granzery.

First on the agenda Josca Batori and Viktor Lovász announced that an agreement had been reached to allow Viktor Lovász to return to the office of President. The Office of the Granzerian President and Lower House would be democratically elected once every 4 years, while the Upper House would be formed with a representation of 25% military personnel, 25% elected officials, and 10% of permanent representatives of each of the 5 new parties. The first election is to take place on the 18th of August, 2018, which Viktor Lovász is expected to win.

A series of five political parties are to be founded, including:

  • The Granzery Nationalists - The head of this party is Josca Batori, the party is founded on Granzerian Ultranationalism and anti-communism, it espouses protectionist, corporatist market economics and a hawkish foreign policy.
  • The Conservative Party - The head of this party is Viktor Lovász, the party is founded with a moderate stance of foreign policy, semi-market economics, and Granzerian nationalism.
  • The Liberal Party - The head of this party is Jákob Rácz, the party is founded on a platform of free market economics and a neutral, anti-war foreign policy.
  • The Socialist Party - The head of this party is Gizella Lukács, the party is founded on an anti-capitalist and anti-nationalist sentiment. It supports a market socialist economic policy and a pivot towards anti-CSS policies.
  • The Moderate Party - The head of this party is Józsi Szőke, it is founded on a moderate foreign policy, semi-free market economics and supports further democratization.

An election determining the representations for each party will be determined in the August Election, in a four-month transitional period prior to this election a coalition of National and Conservative Party members will form the lower house in equal representation.

Granzery's membership in the CSS would not be affected by the agreements, and Viktor Lovász announced he had every intention to further enhance CSS-Granzery relations.

A multitude of military-based announcements were made too. the Granzery Observer reports that Viktor Lovász and Josca Batori are both dissatisfied with the conditions of Granzery's military. Several statements made suggest the country may be enlarging its military.

“It is not good that Granzery is lagging at the end of the line,” Lovász told Katolikus Rádió in September. “We should shine light on the meaning of military service. That is why we will set up voluntary [territorial defense] units. This is a concept we are discussing, and decisions will be made soon,” Lovász further said.

Josca Batori annoucned a program in which voluntary military units would be set up around the country to essentially act as reserve forces. These programs, the government hopes, would encourage the notion of “patriotic commitment and willingness to make sacrifices.” In practice, the government would like to “offer more and more young people the opportunity to take part in volunteer military reserve services by emphasizing this within the framework of being a national issue.”

Batori has also expressed his desire to see military school-like programs to encourage young people to learn the basics of military training. According to the supreme commander, the goal here is not to train militants, but rather to offer young people a counter-culture that is rooted in a value system based on love of the homeland.

Lastly, the government issued a condemnation of the Prusein state, a fellow CSS member to its south, for the brutal, public executions of hundreds of military staff. Viktor Lovász said on the matter "The actions the Prusein State has taken not only serve to do nothing more than further destabilize the region, but evoke imagery of a barbaric time which belongs far in Asura's past."

Ejúkìtsòna welcomes Tangkuo opening their doors to trade

Sachtomój -Shortly after the announcement from our eastern neighbor to end their seclusion by the young Emperor of Tangkuo, President Ejúkìtsòna held a live press conference detailing his thoughts and the Soledan state’s approach to the Tang as they enter the international scene. “First, I and the other members of our government are wholly in agreement that this is a positive development for all parties involved, and will work to increase cooperation and the worth of Tangkuo’s economy. I have great respect for their late Emperor, although it is certain that his decisions halted the march of progress. The new leadership of Tangkuo know that the march to prosperity remains long, but not impossible.”

“But the question many of you [Soledans] are wondering is how this will affect our country, particularly those in the border regions. As it is now, few people and goods cross the borders between our fine Republic and the Great Empire, and anything that moves is all very supervised. From their statement, it seems that they may wish to make it easier to visit and commerce between Soled and Tangkuo [...] but nothing is confirmed. My government remains clear that we will maintain our position as a sovereign, self-governing nation; I will never work to cause suffering to our people’s prosperity or to diminish our national standing and identity.”

After responding to some questions by interviewers, the press conference ended. Several Soledan businesses have shown interest in entering the emerging market, and hopes are raised that the profitability of conducting business and civil transport will finally be good enough for a normal economical relationship. The Sachtomój Stock Exchange went up in value today as news of the announcement reached investors in Soled. As the eastern Catai and greater Yidaoan regions stand as a beacon of stability in the face of civil wars in old Asura, optimism and ambition remain high.

An LAHS soldier attacks a captured observer
HERGEMOTH ROYAL NEWS
CONFLICT ESCALATES

Cravor- Welcome back to Hergemoth Royal News, live from our Cravor studio. This news just in, it appears the conflict in Hergemoth has escalated as shots are fired all over the country. Skirmishes, mainly in the Laurenstadt area, have claimed the lives of over 100 on both sides. The King addressed the nation today on the matter: "People of Hergemoth. As you know, I am your King, Ernst Van Noven, second of my name, and today I speak to you. I speak to you on a matter of treachery, traitorism, and bravery. Treachery; committed by all those who support the terrorist acts of the "LAHS". Traitorism; all those who take up arms against King and Kingdom have committed traitorism. They must be stamped out. Stamped out by the Bravery, of those who stand with honor for their King, and their country. A country that cannot be stopped, 700 years of that country. Let their souls reside in eternal peace. Hail Hergemoth." A very encouraging speech by our great king.

Reports are that more LAHS forces are converging on Enmera, Cravornicht, and Raeburg. As well as this, Ayleiter and Sigis are up in rebellion, and Augustijn Sigis, great-grandson of Sigis and Ayleiter's last king Martijn II, has proclaimed his Kingdom as independent and the "Royal Ayleitin Army"(KAA) as a militant organization, which allies itself with the LAHS. Soldiers from all three organizations are heading to the newly drawn frontlines, where it is likely intense combat will take place. Augustijn "I" has proclaimed war with the Kingdom of Hergemoth. King Ernst has called on his allies to help the Royal forces in their fight against the ultranationalist LAHS and the KAA.

Chaos continues to brew in Hergemoth, with reports that up to 50,000 soldiers alone are loyally fighting for the Liberation Army of the Hergic State, as well as militia and traitorous citizens. It is estimated around 30,000 soldiers are fighting for the KAA, up to 25,000 more citizens are fighting for the Royal Ayleiter Army. Meanwhile the Royal Forces have around 200,000 loyalists as well as up to 1 million citizens ready to fight, but many reserves have formed their own small militia groups and are joining in the fighting without a base loyalty to the crown. It's likely further forces will dessert to opposing factions in the coming days of fighting.

MIDRASIA AND VELEAZ CLASH IN ASUR
Consul Melcion Portas demands an explanation from Veleaz after a naval skirmish in the Asur sea

Image
Patrol ships were scrambled following a clash between the Midrasian and Veleazan
navies earlier today
LOTRIČ - Consul Melcion Portas has demanded 'an explanation' from the Veleazan government for their actions in the Asur sea earlier today after Midrasian and Veleazan ships exchanged fire in a short incident earlier today. The incident followed a Veleazan ship attacking and sinking a ship of refugees attempting to flee from Veleazan waters. The office of the Consul has stated that it has given the Veleazan government 24 hours to respond or face 'international retribution' for their actions.

In the early hours of Tuesday, naval activity within Veleazan was reported by Midrasian patrol vessels who caught visual of a ship of refugees believed to be fleeing Veleazan waters. Contact was made with the vessel, with the ship being screened by two La Confiance-Class patrol ships. Several minutes later the patrol ships gained a visual on a number of Veleazan vessels pursuing the refugee ship. The pursuing vessels then engaged the fleeing vessel. The Midrasian ships fired warning shots in an attempt to ward off the Veleazan ships, however this did not stop them from sinking the refugee ship. What followed was an hour long standoff between the ships of each nation, with ships from each nation firing upon each other. It is unknown which vessel fired first, though the Admiralty reports that no vessels were harmed in the incident. In response to the incident the Admiralty has increased the number of patrol vessels active within the Asur, whilst the Air Force has redoubled its monitoring efforts over the sea.

The incident is simply one in a number of confrontations between the two nations in recent years, with the last taking place only several months earlier involving the gunning down of a family of refugees attempting to cross the Appian Wall. These confrontations have caused renewed hostility between the two nations in recent months, which had generally remained quiet after the 1980s. Many analysts have suggested that the rise in refugees fleeing from Veleaz is a result of the worsening economic situation within the Communist nation. There is also suggestion that the more hard-line approach of the military is the result of a potential fallout between the Communist Party and the Armed Forces, the former of which is believed to be losing its grip on power due to the worsening economic and political situation.

No official response has been released by the Veleazan state, however we will have more on this story as it develops.

TROOPS IN GRANZERY FREED

BRIEF CLASHES WITH REBEL FORCES END IN CSS VICTORIES ACROSS THE BOARD
In a viciously rapid turn of events, the Rohstian and Volgarian troops held captive in Granzery have been liberated by Royal Armed Forces. None of the captured soldiers were harmed, and all have returned to their respective homelands. Engagements with the rebel forces resulted in the death of one Rohstian soldier and left seven others wounded in the brief engagement. Corporal Lukas van Vliert was killed in the fighting, and a televised memorial service will be held for him in remembrance of his service to the nation and fellow countrymen. King Franz is awarding van Vliert posthumously the Knight's Cross for his personal valour in combat.

Rebel forces quickly fell or capitulated following the military entrance of CSS forces and military action taken by the Granzerian government. Granzerian special forces most notably liberated President Lovasz from the coup's leaders, where he was quickly reinstated as leader of the nation. Following this, he reaffirmed his ties as the newest member to the political power bloc, and seeks to continue close ties with our nation and our allies. Following the coup, the nation is attempting to back away from its Bolshevik past and ideology, and transition into a more Western style democracy.

POLITICAL ISSUES IN HERGEMOTH; ROHSTIAN PEACEKEEPERS DISPATCHED TO SAVE THE DAY
Growing civil unrest broke out in Laurenstadt, Hergemoth, as rebel contingents of the Royal Hergic Army have taken arms against the nation's crown and loyalist forces. Casualty figures continue to climb into the hundreds as recent reports depict brutal clashes in city streets between rogue army forces and those standing steadfast with the nation's king. In an emergency follow-up council that came up after the resolution of the Granzerian crisis, it was decreed that Coalition forces would be dispatched to pacify the brooding situation occurring in our turbulent ally of Hergemoth. These actions taken by King Franz V shows the stark commitment of our nation to the well-being of its allies, and further illustrates Rohstian desire for peace and tranquility the world.

CLASH IN THE ASUR; MIDRASIAN SHIPS CLASH WITH THE VELEAZAN NAVY
Shots were fired in the Asur earlier this morning, as Midrasian ships viscerally responded to Veleazan patrol ships sinking refugee vessels fleeing from the Communistic state. It is yet to be confirmed which side shot first, but this has gone further to exacerbate growing tensions between Midrasia and its neighbour Veleaz, which has yet to issue any official response towards the Midrasian government. This is just an echo of what happened a few months prior, when Veleazan troops fired upon and executed civilians attempting to flee the nation across the walled border, signalling that social fires have yet to be extinguished in the burning Rotherist state.

Anadottir, Troelson, Steinsson celebrate one year on the job.

Last year, on April 11th, 2017, the entirety of the Great Council of the Crylantian Federation met together to elect two vacancies on the National Council, Crylante's national executive body, and fill a place newly created by the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. This saw Jenný Anadottir of the Trúathi Party take the place as the Director of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and Arþur Troelson of the Socialist Party take the place as Director of Education, Research and Healthcare, while Rikard Steinsson of the Green Party took the newly created position as Director for Culture, Sports and Equality.

Notably, Jenný Anadottir has pursued a more active role in international relations for the Crylantian Federation. Moving away from the slight isolationism of her peers, Anadottir has embraced internationalism; while maintaining the "special relationship" between Crylante and tir Lhaeraidd, she has pursued greater relations with other Lhedwinic nations such as Glanodel, Navack and Vrnallia, leading to the creation of the Lhedwinic Council, and has sought to further establish Crylante's position in trading, seeking economic observership in the CDN, a very controversial move decried as "the death of neutrality", a phrase which has also been applied to her open condemnations of human rights violations and authoritarianism. This approach has been given the nicknames of "Anadottirism" and "New Neutrality" by the press, and despite controversy, 66% of Crylantians in a recent poll said they generally supported her actions as Director.

Troelson's surprise election has been hailed by many as a turn towards "democratic socialism", a phrase applied to the views of the early Socialist Party of which Troelson is a member. Seeking to undo many neoliberal reforms introduced in the 1980's, Troelson's noted left-wing leanings on economics have set his tenure apart from his more Third Way predecessors. Notably, he pushed for the abolition of tuition fees, initiated by the Socialist and Reform Parties in the mid 1990's; while the rates were low and university was still rather affordable, it was still very controversial. He has also pursued increased funding for mental health, stating that "it receives less attention than it deserves in this day and age". The same survey found 57% of Crylantians said they agreed with his actions so far as Director. He is also notably the first person of a minority background to serve on the National Council; being half-Yidaoese on his mother's side.

Steinsson has pursued to "break down the barriers" that still exist in Crylante's society preventing disadvantaged groups from reaching their full potential; the unlikely passing of the Fourth Amendment has seen him enter the executive, making him the first person not of the Reform, Socialist, Farmers' or Trúathi Parties to be a member of the National Council. He has presided over the successful Crylante-Navack Copa d'Aeia in his responsibility over Sports and Culture, and has sought greater rights for minority groups; he has headed campaigns to integrate refugees into society and has successfully allowed intersex babies to be marked as neither male or female on government records, gaining a commendation from many international LGBT rights groups, saying it builds on Crylante's already superb record in the matter. Studies show a similar level of support to Troelson, with 58% supporting his policies so far.

PDRS Counterattack Beaten Back
Bishop Auckland Held!

A counterattack by forces loyal to the People's Democratic Republic of Sheera at Bishop Auckland has been successfully repulsed after two days of heavy fighting and 734 casualties, of whom 380 were deaths. The counterattack was initiated when PDRS commander Hyrum Salazar crossed the River Stier to the west of the city of Bishop Auckland in an effort to flank Lhaeraidd troops holding the city. An estimated twelve thousand Sheeran troops descended upon the city supported by artillery and light vehicles, facing off against the defending force of five thousand. Exact figures with regard to Sheeran losses are at this stage impossible to obtain but it is believed that they lost a third of their attacking force.

During the early stages of the counterattack Sheeran forces made significant gains, pushing well into the city limits of Bishop Auckland before being halted by a combination of Lhaeraidh armoured units and close air support from attack helicopters. Once the Lhaeraidh forces had time to call upon support the Sheeran forces were pushed back in a running battle, forcing a retreat to their river crossing point. A desperate scramble to cross the river and escape to the north ensued, but was hampered when Lhaeraidh aircraft strafed the river crossing barges, isolating the Sheeran rearguard. The commander of the rearguard, Sub-Commander Muzbagu, surrendered to Lhaeraidh forces two hours later at 11:32 am today and with him over one thousand Sheeran soldiers and a significant amount of war material were captured.

The total Sheeran losses from casualties and those captured is estimated to stand at around five and a half to six thousand soldiers, most of whom were poorly trained and equipped militia. While this allowed for a victory at Bishop Auckland it does raise several concerns. In the opening days of the Brush War Sheera's predecessor SUSa fielded older generation armoured units, units which have yet to be encountered by Lhaeraidh forces.

OPINION: The Future of the CSS and the Future of Volghar are not Aligned
Jahk Ilkhaldun, Liberty MA for Khoid Ãlesandir
The Coalition of Sovereign States began its history as a joint charter between Central Catai and Alemannia, a unified pact that aimed to provide a counterbalance to the rapid increase of strength of the CDN and the fears of the return of communism to Aeia. The CDN is a paper tiger, unable to prevent the fall of democracy in even its own constituent nation states, and communism is a dead beast except for where its phantom lingers in South Eastern Asura and Vestrim, the idea that Ternca and Vynozhia may return to their status as the red menace of Catai is simply ludicrous.

If the Newreyan Civil War has taught us two things it is, 1: the CDN is utterly incapable of securing its own members from rebellious groups. Folksland is proof of this, as Newrey tears itself apart the CDN can do little but watch, and 2: Newrey's interests and the CDN's do not align. The idea that a joint Midrasian-Newreyan task force would seek to reclaim our Special Administrative Cities, the rhetoric that the Khan and the Nationalist Party used to justify the formation of the military bloc, is not a realistic thought in the modern era. Instead, we see a declining CDN who's military wing appears to be caught in limbo, and a bolstering trading bloc between their states. To contrast, the CSS is beginning a period of rapid expansion in East Asura, in nations that are hardly stable or ready to join the international scene. Prusei and Granzery may boast impressive militaries, but they are both on the brink of civil war and their policies reflect badly on all their allies. Especially with the new foreign policy of the Nationalists being one of normalisation with the states of the Asur.

The truth of the matter is the CSS is rapidly expanding its sphere across the globe, Aramas and Granzery have proven that the nationalist organisation has teeth that it can bring to bear against those whom it sees as threats. And on the surface, this is a fantastic argument for joining the allied bloc. However, do we really wish to link our nation to the expansion of ideology world wide? Is that not antithetical to the very foundation of the concept of national sovereignty?

Speaking of Granzery, the ousting of communism there and the rise of instability in Vynozhia is further proof that the red menace of Catai is dead. Ternca, the spiritual successor to the ASU, has seemingly taken an air of isolation and retreated from pan-Catisuran policy. The idea that Volghar needs assistance from nations halfway across the globe to secure against this nonexistent threat is the basis of our membership in the CSS.

With the CSS's rapid expansion, we must re-analyse where our military and foreign policy objectives lay. Frankly, the rapid growth of the CSS as an East Asuran bloc and its links to regime changes in the region must make us rethink where we stand. Volghar's interests are not those of Alemannia.

THE WALL SHALL FALL!
Death unto the Imperialists
Image
Adelante, legionarios!
Tolvas- As the world saw further examples of the imperialist, interventionist, and aggressive way that the Midrasian nation acts towards ours, the sole Communist nation in the world, it stood by and did nothing. The world did nothing but watch as the criminal Midrasians opened fire upon our sovereign vessels in our sovereign waters, a blatant act of disregarding internal borders and agreements, it has become clear the Veleaz can no longer count on the world to help it. It is time that we look to ourselves for help and to bring merciless retribution to those that deserve it the most.

Their Consul, Melcion Portas, has 'demanded' that we explain why we sought to defend our territory in the way of combat on the Asur Sea. We say that we do not answer to them, and that they should answer us as to why Midrasian vessels had been straying dangerously close to Veleazan waters, a clear sign of provocation, one to which we shall tolerate no longer.

It is with this mission, and the support of the People's State and Commissar's of the World, that the nation of Veleaz now declares that a state of war now exists between The People's State of Veleaz and the Republic of Midrasia. For too long, the criminal nation has sat itself upon a throne of wrongly conducted wars and operations, the blood of countless citizens upon their hands and enshrined in their flag. Their brazen attitude in their actions to our people serve only as a reminder that they will not rest until either the People's State has been destroyed or they have. And we Veleazans do not intend to see our nation fade away into the annals of history.

To our soldiers that are in the field now, know that the People, and the Generalissimo stand with you and hold the highest faith in you that you shall deliver unto the Midrasians their much deserved retribution, and that no quarter shall be given.

EDRELAND JOINS CDN AS OBSERVER
Move represents big step for Government towards greater multilateral involvement- but some in backbenches are not happy
Image
Prime Minister Nicholas Jardine arrives at the Alydian Democrat Leadership Conference on April 13

TREMAINE- In a foreign policy move that was expected but, nevertheless, came early, Prime Minister Nicholas Jardine announced today that the Republic of Edreland would be joining the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations as an observer. Flanked by ministers, Mr. Jardine made the announcement at the biannual Alydian Democrat Leadership Conference in Newcombe. The decision is popular with some elements of the Prime Minister's party but others are not so happy.

Mr. Jardine said he intends to nominate Mr. Alexander Forbes to serve as Non-Voting Member of the Aeian Parliament, pending approval by the Diet. The nomination vote is scheduled for May 1. In the meantime, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mark V. Caridi will serve as the interim delegate and will thereafter serve as Edrish Representative to the Aeian Council.

The Prime Minister's motive for joining the CDN still remains rather vague. Minister for the Economy Vincent Marston appeared on ETV One this morning to proclaim that Edreland needed the preferential trading status offered by partial membership. Mr. Marston said that "our economy needs to be infused periodically with the fresh blood of foreign cash. Of course there will be fluctuations in the market. But we won't be joining the real single market- the Government can still put up barriers against the kind of harmful competition that would result from that. This is overall a very wise move." Experts were divided as to the economic literacy of the minister's statements.

Among those angered by Mr. Jardine's current foreign policy course is the National Trade Council, the advisory body to the Trade Minister and the government authority on trade policy. The NTC imposed sanctions on Newrey in March, and continue to push for even-tougher measures. Mr. Jardine agreed to an embargo of Newreyan goods to begin on April 20 but Edreland's surprise admission to the CDN puts these plans in jeopardy; Newrey is a full member of that organization.

Backbencher DMs are also angry. Ralph Armstrong, Alydian Democrat DM for Market Dorling, said to EBG that he is very unhappy with Mr. Jardine's decision. "Protectionism is going to out the window. This is absurd," Mr. Armstrong complained. "I respect and will always support the Prime Minister but Edrish industries are going to be hurt by this initiative." The Nationalist Party, which supports the Alydian Democrats in a confidence-and-supply agreement, also issued a statement. Party leadership declared that "the Government's decision to accept partial membership in the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations is an out-and-out mistake. It will draw our nation into conflicts abroad and national industries will suffer at the hands of foreign competitors. The Government will grow to regret this decision.

The Liberal Party welcomed the move, saying that Mr. Jardine "has made a smart choice, proving that partisan adherence to isolationist policies need not be the modus operandi of this Government. The Liberal Party welcomes chances to work closely with the Prime Minister and Cabinet to make the most of the wonderful opportunity presented to Edreland."

In other news, unconfirmed reports from Veleaz say that the Government there has declared war on the Republic of Midrasia, citing violations of international law and claimed Midrasian imperialism. Midrasia is projected to be one of Edreland's biggest partners in the CDN. Stay with EBG for updates on this breaking news story.

CONSUL CALLS STATE OF EMERGENCY

Image
Reserves across the nation have been called up, whilst military conscription has been reintroduced

Lotrič, Midrasia - Consul Melcion Portas has called for a national state of emergency today as the People's State of Veleaz, along with its ally Wallais have declared war upon Midrasia. At 11:53am this morning explosives were detonated across the Appian Wall, levelling the anti-Communist barrier which had stood for nearly 80 years. This attack was followed by an official declaration of war by the communist state upon the Republic. Veleazan forces quickly overran the defensive garrisons in the east, many of which proved outdated and unmanned. Whilst the Veleazan ground offensive was successful, the vast majority of missiles fired across the border were intercepted by the Air Defence systems which line the wall.

Veleazan forces are currently believed to be making advances through the Eastern province, however are now facing stiff resistance from military units deployed to the area. Reports suggest that heavy fighting is taking place near Batogne-le-Rieve and Llodi. Air units have been scrambled to the area and have begun their attempt to repulse Veleazan airstrikes. Additionally, the First Fleet is undertaking operations within the Asur near Alzur island. It has been noted that a relief effort, in co-ordination with APHO, is currently underway in the east, attempting to evacuate civilians for the war-zone. Whilst the advances has been somewhat slowed, the swiftness of the Veleazan attack caught Midrasian positions off guard, allowing the Red Army to make significant inroads into the east.

In an emergency session of Parliament, the Consul immediately called for a state of emergency, requesting the Senate extend this to grant him emergency powers to deal with the situation. The impromptu vote passed with 297 in favour to 0, with 3 absent. As a result, the Consul has officially issued a declaration of Levée en masse calling all able bodied men between the ages of 18 to 35 to report to local recruiting stations being set up across the nations constituencies. Those not willing to perform combat duty are able to apply for industrial placements instead.

In a speech to a joint session of Parliament earlier today, the Consul stated:
"My friends, countrymen. My fellow Mydrans. Today, Floréal 13th 2018, a day which will lie stained in the memory of people living far and wide. On this day, our country. Our Republic. Our very way of life. Was viciously and brutally attacked. By forces of the so-called Peoples' State of Veleaz. This unprovoked act of aggression came with no warning, and failed to live up to the internationally recognised laws governing the conduct of warfare. It has been known for many years now that Veleaz is a state that believes the rule of law applies to all others, but not itself. That all others should live up to their word in bargains, but not themselves. This is a regime with little regard for human life. Massacring innocents who simply try to find a better life outside of their borders. This is not a system under which any human should have to suffer. Earlier today I asked Congress to grant me the necessary power to organise the defence of the Republic, its constitution and those who live under its grace. That is why I am calling for a general mobilisation of the armed forces, the activation of emergency national service and the activation of Article I, Section II of the Cyningburgh Pact. Midrasia does not stand alone. It holds many allies across the globe, both official and unofficial. My fellow Mydrans. On this very day the generals and party officials of Veleaz has made a grave mistake. They perceive the Republic as weak and decadent, but we shall show them that we are stronger and more united than we have ever been in the long history of this great nation. And we hope that through our efforts, the people of Veleaz may also feast from the tree of liberty.
As such, within this trying time. I ask that you stand with us together in this fight against tyranny and oppression. So that democracy and liberty may yet live to fight another day.
Viva Mydrazia, Viva la libertat, Viva la Republique!

THE NAVISH SECURITY COUNCIL RE-UNITES FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE 1930S

Image
Helle Schanke earlier at her speech in the Red Palace after the meeting

The whole world is in shock. Today, April 13th of 2018, at 11:53am, Midrasia declared war back on Veleaz. It has been 118 years since the end of the Great War, and Midrasia and Veleaz show how they still can't get along. The Veleazan government declared war on the “imperialist” Midrasia, whose response confirmed the condition of war after several attacks on the Appian Wall, opening the doors to the eastern provinces of Midrasia. This conflict obviously shakes the whole world, as this series of unfortunate event does not seem to be near to its end—civil wars in Aramas, Newrey, and Ovandera; war between Hipasia and Saraibia.

In the same afternoon, the Navish President gathered the Navish Security Council in the Red Palace to discuss Navack’s position on the matter. The NSC consists of the President, the Navish Ministry of Defense, the General of the Navish Army, the Navish representative on the CDN, and the Presidents of both houses of Congress. After the meeting Helle Schanke went directly to a press conference, where she stated that “Navack shall protect the rights of those who are in danger because of some crazy old man who calls himself Generalissimo. Navack will mainly help Midrasia with humanitarian aid and refugee management, sponsored by the Lhedwinic Council, and will surely send volunteers at first in order to help with the containment of the Veleazan forces. We, the Navish people, should remember how our nation was opposed by the same people that are in power down there. It has nothing to do with ideologies, rather with the basic right to life and liberty of those civilians!” Congress is yet to vote for an official declaration of war against the People’s Republic. Jacob Eid, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, said, “we have to be meticulous. We cannot act with thinking and make wrong moves here. It’s not just a one front conflict. Menaces can be at our door, just waiting to attack. Navack will help, but most importantly, we will secure our nation’s safety.”

At the end of the afternoon today, the Navish army issued a notice of a search for volunteers who are willing to help the Midrasian forces. Navack is mostly gathering personnel to assist with aid, alongside other Lhedwinic nations. The Ministry of Internal Planning also stated in a later announcement that the Navish government will willingly build refugee centers in safe areas of the country, in order to help any Midrasian families trying to flee the conflict. Karen Waad, Navish representative and current President of the Council of the CDN said that the alliance is planning to meet as soon as possible, and that if needed, the CDN nations will be “ready to use everything we have to stop this threat to our lives and nations.”

Granzerian reservists patrol the Wallais Border.

THE GRANZERY OBSERVER
GRANZERIAN MILITARY ON HIGH ALERT, RESERVE HOME GUARDS MOBILIZED.
Granzery's military today announced that the country was to be placed on maximum military readiness, following instability in Prusei and Newrey, as well as the beginning of a war between Wallais, Veleaz and the CDN.

Viktor Lovasz has called on members of the voluntary Granzerian reserve force, the Voluntary National Defence Corps (ÖNVT), to report for duty to military stations across the country. Some 80,000 ground forces are expected to be deployed, mostly in defensive positions along the Wallesian border, but also with a significant presence along the Prusein and Newreyan borders.

As of now, the 2nd ’Lujza Vastag’ Hussar Regiment, 5th ’Republican Guards’ Mechanized Regiment, 7th ’Hedvig Vencel’ Mechanized Regiment as well as some 40 thousand reservists are stationed in positions along the Wallesian border. The National Granzery Defence Force has said the move is "entirely precautionary," and said that "Granzery has no wish to become involved in conflicts between the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations and Veleaz."

Military analyses suggest that the NGDF fears a possible retribution attack from Wallais against the Granzerian government for their recent abolition of communism, and fears possible spillover due to increasing civil tensions in Prusei. The Granzerian foreign ministry echoed the statements of the military, and assured it's neighbours that the move was entirely defensive and said "The only motivation for raising military awareness is to ensure the territorial integrity and security of Granzery."

On the Prusei border the NGDF has stationed the 8th ’Turulmadar’ Infantry Regiment and the 9th ’Ferenc Barna’ Hussar Regiment, as well as some 5,000 reservists.

The remaining forces remain mostly held within Csongrad and Estergum, but with a total of 5,000 reservists spread across the Aleian and Newreyan borders to "ensure national security"

Granzerian air traffic has been warned to avoid the airspace over Wallais, Veleaz and Midrasia, has cancelled all flights to those countries and urged all Granzerian nationals in the effected nations to head towards their nearest Granzerian Embassy, where arrangements would be made to ensure their safe return to Granzery.

Granzery Air Force and Naval assets remained grounded for all of today, refraining from performing any unnecessary activities to ensure that tensions were not further inflamed.

CONSUL IMPLEMENTS NEW MEASURES TO PROTECT WAR EFFORT

Image
Mr Portas issued the official declaration this morning at a joint session of Parliament

Lotrič, Midrasia - Consul Melcion Portas along with the Council of State has officially instituted a new act of Parliament today, labelled the Act for the Defence of the Republic, or the ADR for short. The Act officially codifies the wide ranging powers granted to the Consulship through the State of Emergency that war declared yesterday. The Act also gives the government the necessary power to requisition land buildings, arrest suspected criminals and collaborators, censor valuable intelligence from publication along with a range of other measures deemed necessary to protect the nations war effort.

Several arrests of suspected collaborators and anti-war protesters have already been made, with several buildings near the front lines in eastern Midrasia requisitioned for military purposes. Several have already called out the ADR as an authoritarian power grab by the government, seeking to implement measures of social control in opposition to the values it states to be defending. The government however has already released a statement suggesting that the measures within the ADR are fully compliant with the long standing precedent for the nation's war effort, as observed during both Great Wars. Furthermore, the Consul stated that by protecting the war effort in the short term, the liberty of the nation will be protected long term with the conclusion of the conflict.

News from the front-lines suggest that the Veleazan military continues to make progress in the east, however they have begun to be beaten back as reservists begin deployment within the eastern territories. It is believed that heavy fighting continues in Batogne-le-Rieve and Rieqe. In terms of the Wallaisan front, progress remains stagnant due to the terrain of the area proving unsuitable to offensive strategy. Civilians within towns east of Dijou are advised to evacuate to the west. Humanitarian aid and transport vehicles have been deployed to the affected areas to ensure that those wishing to leave can do so. Midrasian Air operations continue to make progress against the Veleazan air force, though Veleazan forces continue to maintain air superiority over the Perpignan region. Naval activities have also been successful in driving the Veleazan navy away from the Midrasian coast, with significant engagements now taking place near Alzur Island.

All citizens eligible for military service are required to register at their nearest recruitment station. All citizens ineligible for military service will be called upon within the coming days to fill necessary industrial placements. All other civilians are advised to stock up on food and seek shelter.

Regular updates on this story will be posted on the La République webpage.

Vannerr, Ovandera - An official report has recently been issued by the Ovan Communist Party here in Vannerr in regards to the latest in a string of conflicts now raging across Asura. Officially, the People’s State of Veleaz has declared war on the Republic of Midrasia over a naval dispute which the Party has reason to believe was caused primarily by the Veleazan Navy.

Tensions between the two countries have been at all time highs recently, not months ago a family of Migrants attempting to flee the “People’s State” into Midrasia were shot by Veleazan Authorities along the border. It had been assumed by all, however, that like in most previous decades the worsening economic situation and weakening Veleazan Government would be dissuading factors against all-out war between the two nations.

Especially after recent developments within the country, the Communist Party has attempted to distance itself from its ideological cousins, with several party-members being quick to criticize the Veleazan approach to government.
”The Commonwealth and People’s State are similar only in the color of their flags...Veleaz is a ‘People’s State’ only in that there are people living in her. — Vertreter der Intern Politik, Christoffer von Freitag

A meeting between Canton and Military Representatives, and the General-Secretary to discuss the topic of the war was called this morning after the first declaration. Officially the Party has remained neutral on the topic, but the possibility of Ovan Involvement has already sparked heavy debates from different Party-Factions, particularly on the topic of a Liberation Campaign — sending aid or Ovan troops on the side of Midrasia. Reports on these initial talks have remained confidential for military reasons, however several political experts have weighed in on the topic.
”Ovandera is in an interesting position, as the country stabilizes an intervention of this kind would serve several purposes; first and foremost it would cement this stabilization from a military perspective to the international-world, but more importantly, it would define Ovan Foreign-Policy especially towards other radical-leftist states. On the flip-side non-involvement would save Ovan lives and potentially dissuade her from following the path of interventionism.” — Alek Ilbraum

Rebel leader Ludwig Kaznik addresses the "Temporary National Governance Council", the rebel high command
HERGEMOTH ROYAL NEWS
OUR NATION THEN THE WORLD

Raeberg- Wilkommen back to the Hergemoth Royal News. After almost two weeks of internal conflict, with casualties reaching for the thousands, international intervention has begun in Hergemoth. Reports are that groups of Rohstian soldiers arrived in Laurenstadt a few days ago, and commenced combat with Liberation Army forces. Prior to this, Ludwig Kaznik, RGB commander and ringleader of the rebellious cause, announced the creation of the Temporary National Governance Council, or TNBR, on April 10. The TNBR is an organization mainly composed of politicians and military officers loyal to the ultranationalist and Falangist cause of the LAHS. Reports are that up to 10,000 further soldiers have defected to the LAHS cause, and similar numbers have declared for the KAA. Significant royal advances in Cravornicht with the help of CSS forces have weakened the LAHS hold on the region. Heavy fighting around Laurenstadt has pushed casualty estimates to around 1500, with the bulk of losses being on the side of the Royal Forces.

The King of Hergemoth, Ernst Van Noven II, has made statements of much appreciation of the Rohstian soldiers and their brave efforts to restore stability to our shattered nation. Royal Forces will collaborate entirely with any CSS intervention in the country. However, some say that this welcoming of foreign intervention will encourage more defections from more nationalist soldiers in the Royal Army. The King has ordered as many loyalist forces as possible to immediately deploy to Ossteraz, Cravornicht, and Enmeria, the areas mainly effected by the brutal war. Raeberg has also become a strongpoint as KAA forces storm southwards. Tanks are divided amongst the various factions, which equalizes the strength of all forces.

World- IN also recent news, it seems that the Third World War has erupted in Asura. All factional leaders in Hergemoth have condemned Veleaz, especially the TNBR, who have called Veleazans "animals" and "disgusting". King Ernst, Prince Augustijn, and General Kaznik have all released statements condemning Veleaz. Kaznik's remarks follow: The filthy communists in Veleaz believe in nothing more than poverty, ripping apart the structure of society. Communists are rabid, like wild dogs. They will attack, possibly injure, and then they will be out down. It is the forces of civilization, us, the Asurans, that will exterminate this sickness of communism!. A very radical response by General Kaznik. On top of this, international eyes are turning on Augustijn of Ayleiter, who has been rumored to to be rounding up and killing large numbers of Veleazans. Some say that up to 1000 have died.

If Hergemoth was not in a state of civil war it would be sure that large amounts of airstrikes would be launched against Veleaz, although obviously that is not an option for any faction at this point. Hatred for the communists and occasionally for the Midrasians is widespread, however. If the civil war is up by the end of the year it is likely the new state, or the kingdom, will conduct action against Veleazan assets. Some volunteers are already assisting Granzerians in Wallais.

Meanwhile, Prince Karl may return from Fontnoveau soon, on the instruction of his father. Prince Karl does de jure command the "Karl I" mechanized infantry regiment, some of the finest in Hergemoth, but it's unlikely Karl will see combat even if he returns. However, the youngest child of Ernst II, Prince Hans, age 16, was forced out of Ayleiter when the KAA was established, has entered active military service as First Lieutenant Hans Van Noven. He is currently fighting in Cravornicht, on the rear lines.

Vvarden Declares Neutrality in Midrasian-Veleazian Conflict

The Senate has announced that in the wake of the newly declared war between Midrasia and Veleaz, the Democratic Oligarchy of Vvarden will remain neutral. This move comes after a desire to stay out of any further conflicts in the wake of the agreement between Volgaria and Vvarden concerning the border. Some pro-CDN Speakers in the Senate have voiced their opposition to the decision, but the fact remains that Vvarden is simply a CDN observer and is not required to join Midrasia in their war efforts, no matter how much they would want to. The issue of CDN membership remains prominent. To many, Vvarden is seen as a nation surrounded, of which it has three choices, join CSS, despite the tensions between the two groups, join CDN and hope for the best that conflict between the two alliances would not occur, or go it alone. The DDSP and KVP both stress the desire to go alone, but many of the other members of the Senate are somewhat more aligned towards the CDN. The Midrasian role in mediating a mutual agreement between Vvarden and Volgaria helped this movement grow, and now there is scant a bad word spoken about the CDN.

Despite the declaration of neutrality, several hundred volunteers have already been recorded to have left for Midrasia. One group of volunteers, calling themselves the Scarlet Band, have stated their intention to help aid the Midrasians against a violent and autocratic regime. The group also firmly believes that Vvarden should join the CDN and help bring an end to monarchies around the world. The Senate has not yet issued a statement on the subject of volunteers, but it is expected to do so soon.

Senate declares war on Veleaz and its allies

Prime Minister Petrillo mobilizes Armed Forces!

Image

Abaco Cavalli, Asuran Correspondent
Torden, Aquidneck - Prime Minister Ruperto Petrillo has mobilized the Armed Forces of Aquidneck today, shortly after receiving the authorization from the Senate through its official declaration of war on Veleaz and Wallais. The Prime Minister said in a statement on the floor of the Senate that he is directing the Defense Council to co-ordinate with the Armed Forces of Midrasia in the defense of the nation. He went on to say, "the government of Veleaz has acted in a barbaric way that is inconsistent with the rule of law and international norms. This illegal and aggressive invasion is misguided and foolish. The Kingdom of Aquidneck sends its deepest condolences to not only the people of Midrasia who are suffering under this Veleazian agression, but to the people of Veleaz themselves who have for too long suffered on the oppression of Communism."

Deputy Prime Minister, Renata Panzera, has confirmed that the Kingdom of Aquidneck would "fully meet" its obligations to the Republic of Midrasia and the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations. The Ministry of Defense has said that the Esercito Reale has mobilized the Annabaldi Arditi Brigade, the Vilfredo Mountain Brigade and is currently sending them to Eastern Midrasia to join in the defense of the Republic. The Marina Militare confirmed that part of the Azur fleet is in the area and will be joining in the fighting in Alzur island and off the coast of Veleaz. Following co-ordination with the Midrasian forces, the Aeronautica Reale expects to be conducting air raids and giving support to other forces within the week. The Armed Forces of Aquidneck are on high alert throughout Aeia.

Peace Talks Commence
PDRS at the Negotiations to Begin in Port Arthur

Following the significant defeats of PDRS forces over a broad front last week the PDRS leadership have been brought to the negotiating table under pressure of further air strikes and ground offensives. The PDRS has been steadily losing ground following Lhaeraidh intervention, having fought the PRA to a stalemate, and had rejected all prior attempts at diplomacy out of hand. The fragile regime in the north of the former Commonwealth of Kavo was declared after the collapse of the legitimate Kavoene government last year and the rapid military successes of the insurgent group SUSa, and saw initial military and diplomatic successes over ArKav and the PRA; however the radical black nationalist and socialist government, led by Dr Truman Kumbukani has since lost support from its use of chemical weapons, white phosphorus, and its racial policies. Meanwhile the PRA seems to have gone from strength to strength militarily and politically, seeing a peaceful transition of power from the early military government to an interim civilian lead government now headed jointly by former President of Kavo, Marcus van der Veld, and former SUSa moderate, Arna Nguela.

The Lhaeraidh government sent peace overtures to the PDRS on Monday, with approval from the PRA leadership, offering to meet with PDRS representatives in the former capital city of Port Arthur. Kumbukani accepted the offer yesterday and the negotiations are set to begin on Thursday, with Kumbukani and his delegates' safety being guaranteed by the Lhaeraidh military. The outcome of these negotiations is far from certain, for although the PDRS are losing the conventional war now that the PRA is receiving direct military support from tir Lhaeraidh, they continue to maintain a strong political presence within their territory and have vowed to fight a long term guerrilla war if necessary. PRA leaders have stated that any deal with the PDRS would have to ensure an end to Kumbukani's persecution of the white population of the former Commonwealth, as well as an end to persecution of other minority racial groups. To some this seems an unlikely demand to be accepted since the persecution of white people has been a central part of the PDRS' policy.

From a military standpoint it would seem obvious that the PDRS will fold and agree to terms, after all they are now outnumbered by a significant margin by the combined strength of the R-A and PRA forces now deployed against them, and with direct military and material supply from tir Lhaeraidd it would appear that it is only a matter of time before their position is no longer tenable. At least if they negotiate they will have the opportunity to secure some of their demands.

FIRE IN INFL MATCH KILLS 32 PEOPLE IN HUDENHOLM

Image
Picture taken by a civilian in the field during the fire

Hudenholm, Navack – Last Sunday, the great match between Bersk SK and Hudenholm SK ended in terror. The match was played in the Drage Gropen Stadion, in the city of Hudenholm, and started at 6:00pm local time. The match started good for the home team, as Hudenholm scored the first goal in the mark of 5 minutes of the first half. The match was played normally, with Bersk pressuring the rival, but what was about to happen during the half time would change the course of the game. The first half ended 1-0, Hudenholm leading. However, during the half time, a fire started inside the stadium facilities, spreading rapidly. As the havoc began, the game was automatically ended, and an evacuation plan was put into action. People were directed either to the field or outside the stadium. The firefighters managed to get there approximately 30 minutes after the beginning of the fire, and it took them about 8 hours to control the flames. Unfortunately, 32 people died in the incident: 17 spectators, 6 journalists, and 9 players (4 from Bersk SK and 6 from Hudenholm SK), including the national team Mid-fielder and Bersk SK Capitan, Jens Posternak. Besides, 78 more people are currently hospitalized.

As soon as the firefighters managed to control the fire, the Navish Intelligence Police and the Navish Federal Police initiated investigation on the local in order to figure what caused the worst disaster in the story of the Navish football. The bombers kept looking for more victims, but fortunately, no more bodies were found. However, after 3 days of investigation, the Intelligence Police confirmed that the fire was set in purpose. Security cameras confirmed the identity of Stan Perry, a Newreyan refugee that was living in the neighbor city of Voyens, also in Lilleholm. Federal Police managed to track his historic, finding out strict relations with the Newreyan Republican Government. The Federal Police say, for sure, that the “Dragon’s Pit” Fire was a terrorist act. Navish polices are still trying to locate Perry.

Both cities of Berke and Hudenholm decreed a 15 days mourning, as the rest of the country decreed a 7 days mourning. Christoffer Albertsen, president of the INFL, said that “this unfortunate event will never be forgotten by the Navish people. It is a shame that these barbarians have to come all the way here and terrorize these people of good!” Reginald Akhram, Capitan of the Navish national team stated that “football is crying in pain,” referring to both terrorist attack in Hudenholm, and the Midrasian-Veleaz war that forced a stop in the Midrasian Liga 1, as Akhram plays for Olympique de Lotrique. Helle Schanke, however, said that this unfortunate event is a small example of the current state of the world. She also defends that the Navish people shall not generalize such happening, as Newreyans suffer in the hands of tyrants as the Navish people once did. The president laments the happening and will aid the family of all the victims. Both INFL and Bersk SK agreed in giving the victory to Hudenholm SK, also, all teams donated quantities of money to help the reconstruction of the team’ stadium. The president of the INFL also said that the organization might build a monument in their head-quarters in Brestrand as a homage to all the victims of the attack.

The Chalcian Republic is officially at war in more than half a century. Earlier today, units of the so-called Revolutionary Armed Forces of Veleaz crossed the border into Chalcian territory in the Aktion Administrative Area as enemy air forces attempted strikes on targets far behind the frontline. It is reported that the better part of the 1st Army has made contact with Veleazan forces, with the majority of the I and II Army Corps engaged in combat as of now. Our sources state that the 2nd Army's IV Corps has initiated movement north to reinforce the Chalcian defenders. Several Chalcian elements seem to have been forced on the retreat at the start of the attack, facing sudden overwhelming odds as Veleaz is estimated to have thrown about three hundred thousand men into the Chalcian war effort. So far, several small settlements appear to have been taken by the invading forces, including the border town of Eksanthia, while advanced enemy elements are battling Chalcian defenders outside of the major city of Ferres. It seems, however, that with the influx of reinforcements and the initial shock of the attack withering away, the front has stabiled, as the Chalcian Armed Forces make use of the familiar hilly and mountainous terrain near the Etolian mountains to their advantage.

Two power plants and one water plant has been struck by enemy air strikes, leaving the northern half of Ferres without power, as well as most of the surrounding towns and villages. Parts of the motorways N5, W3 and E9 have also been struck and either severely damaged or destroyed, so we advise all civilian traffic fleeing south to avoid said parts of the National Highway system. Several parts of the railroad system of the Aktion Administrative Area have also been destroyed or damaged, so train traffic has been largely reduced, though reports say that working parties have been dispatched to repair as many as possible. Further damage on the north's infrasturcture by hostile air forces has been thwarted by the dense Chalcian air defence network and the Chalcian Air Force, most of which is actively engaged in the air war now, with reports of numerous southern based squadrons being dispatched north to reinforce and relieve their comrades-in-arms.

The Ministry of National Defence published an announcement as soon as the hostilites started: all able-bodied men fit for military service under the National Conscription Law are to report to their local garrisons, recruitment centres and bases for immediate enlistment and training, to serve in the defence of the Republic and the Motherland. All educational and other passes have been revoked; any who do not show for immediate enlistment will be considered deserters and punished accordingly to military law under Article 55 of the Constitution of the Chalcian Republic.

More information about the conflict will be published as soon as possible. God help us.

Stranded creator reminds viewers goodbyes are not forever.

As hit drama Stranded comes to an end, creator Zephania Halim talks about the show's highlights.
By Hisein Andile, Staff Writer

AKHMIS, ONZA - When Stranded first aired on Sadagh's primetime channel, Tatatawar Network, back in 2014, critics warned that the show seemed "too boring" to maintain the attention of a mainstream Onzaian audience. Perhaps in Midrasia, where slow-to-manifest plots are appreciated, they posited, but never in the we-need-return-on-investment world of Onzaian television viewership where self-contained shows like Jarimat w Eiqab and 'uwnadd dominate the ratings game.

Zephania Halim says he anticipated exactly that when he was writing the pilot, just days after deciding to drop out of a graduate-level film studies program and take his chances in Akhmis. "I knew I'd be bringing something that many just wouldn't get the point of," he said. "A show about people from several different countries stranded on an island makes most Onzaians ask, 'what's the point?' and I anticipated exactly that," he said.

Halim took a chance anyway, and after the pilot aired on 17 April 2014, he was encouraged by the positive critical reception. "It may have been dampened by warnings of the show not catching an audience, but nevertheless most [critics] said they liked the show and saw promising elements."

By the time the third season began airing in 2017, the show had defied expectations. Amassing millions of viewers every Sunday night, the show quickly shot to the height of popularity in Onza, but more importantly, the show found popularity abroad as well. "People loved how well the characters from all over the world represented their respective nations," Halim said.

The show chronicled the adventures of some twenty people whose boat capsized on an uninhabited island as they struggled to survive. While the first season focused mostly on the island's tumultuous natural elements, the show's popularity took off as conflicts were introduced between the multinational cast of survivors on the island.

"One place we succeeded I think was with the 'flashback' scenes that worked like a slow puzzle to help viewers see the way that so many people from so far away all ended up on the same boat. Was it by chance or by purpose? That's a question I wanted viewers to juggle and debate the whole lifespan of the show," he said.

And indeed, people debated it up until the bitter end. The show's finale, which aired Sunday, 15 April, saw the conflicts between the survivors finally manifesting themselves in the fullest form as a third of the island decided to use the raft that was not quite seaworthy in the opinions of others to sail for help. "People could sense the animosity between the self-appointed 'leaders' of the survivors and those who wanted to take a more carefree approach to their post-civilization lives," Halim noted, "but I like to think the widening of these gaps between them in the finale had its crescendo matched only with shock."

Many of the survivors took issue with the high-control approach of the handful that ended up over the course of the show becoming the de facto island leaders. Sylvain Lafaille from Midrasia was considered the show's forefront character, portrayed by actor Isaac Ménétries (who's partly known for looking similar to Midrasian Consul Melcion Portas), and after the events of season one became the island's democratically-elected leader.

The finale's story arc began when Lafaille fell critically ill and was absent for a week. During this week, the elderly Yunus Shahzad (portrayed by the Onzaian Kato Nuruddin) and the controversial Dermot Cullen (portrayed by the Vrnallian Michael Curren) attempted to fill in the power gap. When the controversial question of whether the raft was ready ahead of forecasts by the Vvardeni mystic Aidan Bond (portrayed by Hugo Smithers) of an impending hurricane, Cullen and Shahzad insisted that the raft be stored until they were sure it was complete.

A posse of others, including Erich Stöcker (the Rohstian actor Johann Stricker) who was frequently the bridge between the island's leadership and its drinkers, party-goers, and more youthful population, attempted to protest this decision, but were imprisoned by Shahzad and Cullen as a result, which led to the former of a larger faction trying to usurp the decision that was made.

The episode ultimately ended after a prison break, a battle of dialogue, and ultimately the breakaway faction taking the raft and fleeing the island, leaving behind only those who stayed by choice.

"Going into the finale, viewers were expecting something to go down in the absence of Lafaille. That was a given. I wanted people watching to ask the question, 'when Shahzad and Cullen acted, were they acting in the interests of keeping the community together or in the interests of their own morals and beliefs?' And from that, I wanted people to ask, 'either way, was it wrong? Is this the way things should have went down?' That's sort of the ultimate question at the end, accompanied of course with the fate of those who sailed away, which I intentionally left open to interpretation. I think all along, though, you'll find that everybody thought they were doing the right thing, and that's all you can really ask of anyone."

Halim said that he knew it would be hard for viewers to see the sudden dissolution of relations enjoyed between Shahzad and Cullen and those that departed, and that it was part of the driver for intentionally putting them against each other. "The whole point was to pit the strongest of personalities against one another for viewers to be able to enjoy the explosive spectacle, while also critically appreciating the points and merits of both standpoints and decisions."

Still, Halim says some on his writing team worried that the portrayal was biased against the merits of the breakaway faction's positions. "It probably was," he said, "and although I regret that, I can hope that saying this one the record will help bring some balance back to the narrative I wanted to create: yes, major parts of the show's conflicts were contingent on the sometimes reckless antics of the rabble-rousers, but at the end of the day, the show explored two entirely different takes on life that in my opinion are equally valid. In Cullen and Shahzad you have two who are trying to uphold the high sense of what is right that they built their lives around, while in Stöcker and company you have people who are just trying to make the most out of their terrible circumstances. It's not that they don't care about what's right, they just don't see it as a problem when they think no harm is being done."

But goodbyes aren't forever, Halim warned, and although this episode is intended to be the show's last finale, he says that loyal fans should keep an eye open for future updates. "Even though this was where I intended to stop the show, the wonderful thing about stories that orient around groups of people is that they never truly end. Sure, one outcome could be that one group goes away and does their own thing and that's that. But then there's the other possibility that they settle their differences, work together, and flourish, even if that means they never reunite again and things are never quite the same."

Peace Talks Break Down
A War to the Bitter End?

The Foreign Office today confirmed that Peace Talks in Port Arthur have broken down resulting in the withdrawal of the PDRS from the peace process. The break down in talks comes as a result of a diplomatic impasse surrounding the rights of the white minority in Kavo and the PDRS' policies towards them. PRA leader, Arna Nguela, made it abundantly clear to PDRS head Truman Kumbukani that they would not accept a peace deal unless the PDRS agreed to end its policy of persecution and systematic deportation of whites and agreed to a joint program of reconciliation between the former Apartheid government and the new democratic government. During a thirty minute long tirade Dr Kumbukani is alleged to have accused Nguela of 'treachery of the most vile sort, not only against one's nation, but against one's race' before storming out of the talks with his delegation.

Upon receiving confirmation that the PDRS delegation was safely back within PDRS held territory the R-A and PRA forces immediately resumed their advance north. In a rapid advance supported by the entire R-A complement of MBTs together with troops mounted in helicopters supported by Grendel GAH 6 attack helicopters, PDRS forces were encircled and forced to surrender in Stormont. Within a 48 hour period following the breakdown of talks coalition forces captured the key settlements of Fort Nijmegen, Stormont, Ridley Town, Kristiaanville, Haag, and Sunny Croft, reducing the size of the territory still held by the PDRS by half. The most significant clash within this period was at Ridley Town where the full force of R-A firepower was brought down on the PDRS and SUSa forces, leading to an estimated 5,000 casualties. If accurate then this would leave the PDRS and SUSa forces with no more than thirty thousand soldiers combined.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Image
Recent Air offensives against Veleaz have inflicted devastating blows on the Communist nation
Argois, Midrasia - A string of victories both on land, sea, and air have seen the Midrasian military push back the Veleazan invaders, inflicting heavy casualties on the communists. This new offensive has been the first real action in the war since the initial invasion by Veleaz, which bogged down to a stalemate in mid-April. Now armed with air superiority, a beachhead on Alzur and secure positions on the front, the slow push-back of Veleazan forces has begun. This feat would not have been possible without the great bravery shown by the loyal Midrasian soldiers and our allies in the CDN and beyond. The commitments of Aquidneck, Chalcia, and Dreyvisevich to the conflict have been integral to the war effort thus far, and Midrasia owes these allies a great debt of gratitude for their decisive action in the defence of the Republic and the curtailing of the red menace once and for all.

The recent offensive has been the culmination of a very conservative strategy pursued by the Midrasian high command thus far, aimed at minimising casualties and territorial losses. Defensive positions mountain within the east aimed at preventing Veleazan forces from penetrating deep into the country, gaining control over significant settlements. Key to the Midrasian strategy was holding the city of Argois, allowing the Republican Navy to continue its operations unimpeded within the Asur. This strategy, very similar to that employed within the First Great War worked well in whittling down Veleazan forces which preventing any significant advances. Additionally, naval efforts within the Asur had focused on attempts to lure the smaller Veleazan navy into an open battle, believing that superior Midrasian numbers and firepower would be sufficient to force the Red Navy to retreat to port. Additionally, the naval strategy employed by the Admiralty sought to quickly gain control over the island of Alzur. Whilst this operation was significantly delayed due to bad weather, and Veleazan fortifications on the island, Republican forces have now made a significant beachhead on the island and are quickly making progress. The most important area of the Midrasian strategy however was its air war which aimed to slowly whittle down the Veleazan air force to the point where it could no longer operate efficiently within Midrasian airspace. After a long, gruelling campaign, Midrasian air units now hold air superiority over much of the front, allowing airstrikes on key positions on the front and in western Veleaz. Additionally, air support has allowed Midrasian units on the ground to make significant gains, pushing the front closer to the original border along the Appian Wall. Drone strikes are also now being utilised against Veleaz, particularly in targeting military installations near the front and Veleazan supply trains.

Consul Portas praised the resolve of the military earlier today, and all citizens involved indirectly in the war effort. Additionally, Portas also praised Midrasia's allies within the conflict, who continue to aid in the war either on the Midrasian front or elsewhere. Nevertheless, the Consul stated that 'the war is by no means over' and would likely take several months before its conclusion. 'We must not give up the fight now just because we have the upper hand' the Consul stated. 'We must fight to the bitter end to see this war through...there is no other way.'
