Cyanide Eyes

Image

Hailing from Vulgärebijon-o on Tödlichebujoku's northwest coast, Veli Pinheiro began his career as a crystallomatrix personality, chatting to Tödlichebujoku's youth about various subjects before gaining the support and financial base to leave his day job and pursue his lifelong dream in music. Two singles later, his bid to the Tödlichebujoki WV committee won the committee's selection due to its dramatic, direct style- something underlying Veli's previous songs but never fully exposed. The committee was looking for something rivalling or even eclipsing VulkanischenJään's "Love Lies" which brought the nation into the top 5, from its previous result in the bottom 5. Seeing as Tödlichebujoku had just received its worst placing since its debut, this was especially important to the committee. As Veli gave the nation its first WorldVision win, the committee had certainly chosen well, and both the Tödlichebujoku and Veli embarked on a lengthy run of musical success. Now, not long after this "Best Of" win, Veli was contacted by PNB and TÖBUK to perform for the "Your Favorites" edition, an offer he happily accepted.

Up against Normandy and Picardy's formidable WorldVision champion Jules Vergule, Veli was anxious to start. "Hurts" was definitely a great entry, and Veli wasn't sure how the duel was going to turn out. Going one-on-one feels so different than a normal contest. Like you know exactly who you're up against. Powers, this is almost scary in a way. Well, it was time.

Before the performance begins, workers arrange and stack large boxes on either side of the stage to emulate the WV32 stage in Gronbis, Lyonsland.
Image

The arena is dark, as ice-blue accents streak briefly across the stage. The screen lights up with a great flash to reveal the horizon of a beautiful, sunlit plain with green fields and stately trees as the first great auditory blow reverberates through the arena. A few moments later, a second flash of light replaces the previous image of beauty and bounty with the same vista, but this time a cold, gray landscape of drifting ash and bare trees. At the third, more electronic blow, the overhead lights rapidly flash and then focus on the stage, illuminating Veli as angular shards of the background image fall away behind him to reveal slightly rose-tinted peeks at the previous image, and he begins to sing
Too weary to notice through this incandescent pain
Every day dawns terrible, but delicious all the same
Wracked by all these new sensations
What is left of our creation?

The lights briefly intensify. The image on the background screen blurs, running together as if it were melting, before zooming to a volcano in the distance and diving into its fiery depths, where the orange and red of its lava engulfs the entirety of the screen. Veli lets loose for the chorus, encapsulating the betrayal and anger he had woven into his lyrics
Cyanide eyes and honey-gold skin
You lure me close and pull me in
Loving me without a trace
Nothing's on your face

The heat of the lava seeps away as frost covers the background screen and the lights dim so that the only major light source is the screen. At the first "blast" of sound, a man in dark clothing is briefly illuminated in the top left box. Veli turns toward him, and the background screen briefly shows static as if its feed were interrupted. The figure climbs down, as Veli runs to the ground level box on the other side of the stage. He climbs to the mid-level box just as the second blast tears through the arena and the dark figure enters the box Veli had just left, the two men briefly illuminated by separate spotlights as they momentarily freeze in place. The background screen again briefly turns to static. Veli enters the third, topmost box and looks around for someplace else to flee, as the man enters his box and the third blast roars. The spotlights again briefly highlight the pursuer and the pursued as the two freeze, the background screen's static phase lasting this time for the duration of the blast. The static does not fully go away, with the frosty image disrupted by occasional streaks of static. Following the blast, the man stays in his frozen state, allowing Veli to continue singing and also climb down from his box in between lines. The figure then assumes a sinister pose in his box
I truly loved you then but now it's just a game
Your icy countenance is eating up my flame
Oh.. You're sometimes nothing more than a deity of hate

The lights brighten again and the frost on the screen shatters to reveal a swirling maelstrom of lava-colored streaks. Veli returns to his original position in the middle of the stage. Having caught his breath from his little workout, he belts out the chorus
Cyanide eyes and honey-gold skin
You lure me close and pull me in
I swore I'd never leave in haste
You put my life to waste

The screen turns upward to an icy blue sky and a pale sun, and the lights become fainter and more ethereal. The man in the top box seems to disappear as the screen behind him darkens. Veli refocuses onto his breathing and voice as he closes his eyes and looks down, and then looks out over the audience
Ooh… I had hoped to peer within
Ooh... Try to salve you of your sins
Oo-ooh... But now I know too well
There is no hope

The screen's view suddenly "falls" as the guitar solo begins. The circle of the sky decreases in size until the view is that of a stylized lava pit and the "camera" plunges beneath the surface, bubbles whooshing past every which way as if the screen was tumbling uncontrollably. The lights do an undulating motion, then scattering and refocusing on Veli, brightening as they do so. He takes a deep breath to sing the final chorus, dropping to his knees and closing his eyes after the last line
Cyanide eyes and honey-gold skin
You lure me close and pull me in
Loving me without a trace
You put my life to waste

The lights momentarily dim, then they and the screen alternately flash on and off as the music's parting beats rip through the arena and dissipate. In the moments of darkness after the music winds down, Veli stands up and sighs, ecstatic and relieved.

"Thank you everyone! Kiitos Scorilo!" he shouts, nodding toward some screaming fans, before bowing and leaving the stage.

Wow, that's done, and just as exhilarating as before. Somehow. Well, let's find out what the world thinks.

Following the fairly decent result in Lavington in WV45, ÑNÑ (Formerly BNRT), decided to change direction, and so scoured Normandy and Picardy, opening an open submission as well as asking various record companies about the possibility of artists entering (many of which entered entries, considering the popularity of the contest and how it has started careers for many), looking for an artist for the next contest; some, however, claim that the entry had already been decided behind closed doors. No matter how the entry was decided, Jules Vergule was chosen with his song, Hurts. Jules is from the underground scene in Normandy and Picardy, full of the electronic music that doesn't normally make the Normand charts, yet is popular in other countries. He is also a producer, having worked with a menagerie of famous Normand artists, and this has given him a knowledge of what makes a great song. He has worked on over 10 albums and many more singles, and has himself released 5 singles to date, all doing well within a certain community. He was introduced to music during university, where he was studying Law. He had, however, always been involved in music, having been part of a government scheme providing free music lessons for all children from age 10 to 15. It wasn't until his university days he got into the electronic style, called "Leenarstukavat" in Normandy and Picardy, and after he finished his degree in Physics he went fill time into music.

In Oreo City, Jules exceeded all expectations, in Normandy and Picardy, and took away whatever it is you win at WorldVision, and with that his life was changed forever. He has struggled with constantly being in the limelight, both domestically and abroad, but he has carried on doing what he does best, producing music, and has worked with an even wider range of talent before. Most importantly he still loves WorldVision, so when he was asked to appear at the 50th anniversary celebrations, he said yes instantly. He has deliberately shyed away from the media in Scorilo, but at didn't matter, as he and his song were voted the best act of the 40s, the last ten contests! Now, however, he had to go up against surely one of the greatest WorldVision songs of all time, if not the best. For the first time in forever Jules began to feel nervous, but he had already far exceeded what he had set out to do. Can he do it, can he beat Veli Pinheiro and 'Cyanide Eyes'? Only time will tell...

As the song begins, the stage is dimly lit, a faint spotlight shining above Jules who wears grey, skinny jeans, a plain white top and a leather jacket. His hair is flicked up in the popular fashion. A thin layer of smoke covers the screen. At the end of every line, lights at the back of the stage flash on and red, having a distinctly red colour.

We're sailing on a ship of fools
And where we'll end nobody knows
But I will face it all

As Jules sings the second half of the first verse, the lights slightly intensify and the cameras zoom in on Jules, who still stands holding the microphone stand, although during the first line of this bit he holds his hand over his hand, which is beating so quickly that if it went any quicker it would burst out of his chest.

I can not feel my heart grow dark
But I know I have no soul
And that's how I will remain

As the chorus begins, the cameras zoom out again to show the background. Up until this point, the background has remained pitch black, but now shows a background like this. In the background, faint red lights fade on and off to the beat of the song.

And it hurts so much
Pain flows through me
But that sweet release
Takes me so high that I feel at peace

During the verse, the camera pans up and around Jules, with him following it. The background returns to show blackness, but at the end of every line an expanding red ring appears in the centre, expanding outwards and then contracting back into the centre of the screen, as if it was a heart beating. During the second half of the verse the raw, visceral emotion can be seen oozing from every pore of Jules' face; he is putting his emotion in his song, and for the audience at home at least this helps makes the emotions of the song, which can seem quite distant at times, seem more real. As the verse ends ad the chorus is about to begin, he seems to have pulled himself inwards, and the camera turns away.

My heart is gold, my heart is gone
And I've learnt everything that's wrong
Oh I am burning deep inside
I am desire, I am pain
And no matter how much I explain
You will never know how it feels to me

During the chorus, the background from the previous chorus returns, and the smoke layer begins to grow thicker in anticipation of the bridge. The lights in the background are flashing again, but are stronger overall, and the overall lights are tinted red. The cameras continue to pan as Jules sings, looking towards the camera.

And it hurts so much
Pain flows through me
But that sweet release
Takes me so high that I feel at peace
And it hurts so much
Pain flows through me
But that sweet release
Takes me so high that I feel at peace

As the bridge begins, the lights turn white but with a trace of blue, and the smoke has built up around Jules' shins. The image in the background is replaced with the blackness once again, but with wisps of thin, blue smoke. A series of white spotlights shine on Jules, as he sings downwards into the microphone and with his knees bent slightly, as well as being slightly hunched, in an attempt to create the emotion needed for this section

I'm cradled by the shadows
And I'm blinded by the light
I can't see the horizon
But I don't care

As the final chorus begins, there is a flash and the background returns and the lights return to being red. The smoke recedes, and the cameras continue there panning around. Jules moves and contorts himself to the music whilst visibly singing with emotion, looking as if he is straining. As he sings the final line, he looks up before falling onto his knees, and the lights fade off.

And it hurts so much
Pain flows through me
But that sweet release
Takes me so high that I feel at peace
And it hurts so much
Pain flows through me
But that sweet release
Takes me so high that I feel at peace
And it hurts so much

As the stage crew come on to prepare for the next act, Jules can be heard shouting "Marci" and "Thank You". He's done all he can, but will it be enough?

Heijastus (Reflection)

VulkanischenJáán & Gabija Yamaguchi

The lights are initially dark. As the music builds, the lights brighten over a large orchestra on stage arranged around the central platform, which is lowered into the ground, creating a giant hole in the stage.

A pair of aerial dancers dressed in flowing robes, one white and one red, glide in over the audience. Equipped with lances, they spar, flip, and whirl over the stage.

A man (VulkanischenJáán, WV28) and a young woman (Gabija Yamaguchi, WV44) rise from the center of the stage on a pedestal, back to back, as Vulki starts to sing.
Vulki's white suit-tunic is very simply cut and is covered in part with an ice-blue sash (rather like this), while Gabija's vibrant red dress billows and streams in the localized wind machine vortex around the two, light shimmering off its metallic gold embroidery along the edges. Gabija joins Vulki in singing soon after.

Translations

Ahh...... Miná... nousen...
I rise

Suddenly, just before the music's mood becomes heavier and the cellos come into play, the lights on the aerial dancers and orchestra fade away into darkness while the spotlights on Vulki and Gabija intensify. The two swiftly break away from their back-to-back stance and face each other on the platform, which is rising above the stage floor, and Vulki sings
I look into your eyes and soul
Miná tutkin silmiánne ja sieluanne
Teillá on tuo raivoa, minun koskaan havainnut

You have that rage I never found

Gabija steps toward Vulki, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek. She then steps back, shakes her head, and looks to him as if with a new perspective
We fought, with every century growing bitter
Taistelimme, jokaisen vuosisadan kasvaa katkera
Nyt ymmárrán voimme rakentaa yhdessá, ei tuhoa

Now I understand together we can build, not destroy

Vulki turns away from her, toward the audience, releasing a cry of liberation
Ahh..... heijastuminen.... vihdoin.... yhdessá...
Reflection/reverberation... at last... together

He strides toward Gabija as if serenading her
I am logic, endurance, and resolve
Olen logiikka, kestávyys ja pááttáváisyys
Minulle, aika ei ole mitáán muuta kuin abstraktitila

For me, time is nothing more than abstract space

She approaches in turn, holding his hands in a slow, elegant dance
I am passion, love, and vengeance
Miná olen intohimo, rakas ja kosto
Minulle, aika on minun syntymiseni ja kuolemani

For me, time is my creation and death

Together, they sing
Ahh..... heijastuminen.... vihdoin... ikuinen...
Reflection/reverberation... at last... eternal

Golden lights sweep out from the stage as silver confetti drifts down over the audience, and wind whips about the pedestal, driving Gabija's dress into a frenzy of fabric. The two singers are leaning into each other, both hands clasped in the other's
So now we embrace in the starlight together
Nyt siis syleillá vuonna táhtien yhdessá
Elámá on enemmán kuin ristiriita, se on kauneus

Life is more than conflict, it is beauty

Vulki and Gabija are extremely immersed in the music, their joy clear on their faces
Light radiates forth from within
Valo sáteilee esiin sisápuolelta
On aika láhteá, menná ja parantaa tátá maailmaa

It is time to leave, to go and improve upon this world

The two begin to rise off the pedestal and over the audience, now with one hand clasping the other's wrist. They wave and nod to the audience as a new burst of silver confetti falls around them, and disappear into the back of the arena
