Murder! Famed futurologist, roboticist and AI expert Dr. Emily Castle has been found dead, apparently murdered in the middle of the night. Police have few clues and only one suspect: her assistant, Hasan Malal. Data on her research has been taken, and authorities are concerned that, in the wrong hands, the information could lead to untold destruction.

Castle has been working on an analytical algorithm meant to allow a computer to analyze complex patterns and predict future movements in models of human behaviour. While still in its infancy, the program is meant to allow cities to predict traffic patterns weeks in advance, like a weather forecast, cutting down on idling periods and cutting emissions substantially. The Atnaian government is interested in the project for how it could be applied to other elements of society: with the right information subsets, the program could predict everything from the chances of a person being pregnant to someone planning a terrorist attack. While this is all in the future, government interest in the project is only growing as its predictive abilities and the possibilities for those powers of preconception grow.

The data, in the hands of a hostile force, could allow them to begin producing a rival program, and the military applications of such software is obvious. It is of absolute importance that the Atnaian government retrieve the information and solve the murder. Chief Investigator Jordans is on the case.

Okay, I have a suggestion, which I hope goes well enough with what you had in mind.

So this hostile force and Jordans both find out that in the months prior to her murder, Castle had been collaborating with an Oster engineer, working in Ostehaar, on this research, and that he has "missing pieces" of the research. This will make said hostile force want to murder the Oster as well and grab his documents, while Jordans would try to contact him and warn him, sucking his team and perhaps Oster security services into the plot.

If this is going to be some sort of thriller, it'd probably be a Norseland Agent who hired some thug to take out Castle and steal the data. We might be finding the body of a known thug soon.

I clear this, but I would like to point out that unless that Norseman is a Snikmorden or a particularly unscrupulous individual, they wouldn't hire out, they'd do the job themselves.

What I mean is what is the purpose of you having the information? Why would your people go this far to do so? this is all important for the sake of writing a thriller.

Well, for one, just to keep you from getting your hands on it, for two, because our robotics and medical engineering industries always need new tech, and for three, because the Royal opinion on heavy subsidies for the aforementioned industries has begun to wane, leading many to a "desperste times" mentality. Eir Incorporated would have a distinct interest in anything this famed roboticist could have come up with, and their leadership are, like most Norsemen, less than squeamish.

This character was just a random idea, but if Hasan is framed it wraps up the investigation and means it won't be traced back to the enemy countries. If the investigation is open, they'd keep searching and possibly find enemy agents.

I have to wonder if its the only copy of the data...we'll need to cover that plothole. Maybe it just sets them back a week or two, to their last backup or something. Hmm.
