Fort Janton, Administrative Building

"Next please", called the clerk across the office. Thomas stood up, walked towards him and handed him the papers necessary. "Thank you, Sir". He briefly looked over the documents, "Captain Thomas O´Neille, formerly Royal Army, recruited in via the AOP ?", "At thy service", Thomas bowed. The Clerk raised an eyebrow. He had probably heard of the somewhat formulaic and antiquated behaviour of Thomas´s Countrymen, but seemingly never met one in person. After a few moments, the men sitting behind the desk gestured towards the door to the next room and handed him the files back, "Aye, please continue towards Kit Issue and Medical Exams, there."

The Medical Exams were standard. Apperantly he had no infectious disease, and while Thomas had lost a little bit of his old form while serving as Staff Officer and felt like he had slight back problems, the doctor could find nothing in that area. The Vannish Equipment Kit also seemed pretty average, though Thomas noticed the lack of a bayonet which usually came with Isle´ish ones.

Another slight surprise came with the Captain´s new accomidation: The Flat given to him was lavish in comparison to the ones that Isle´ish Officers had. Captains shared an appartment in sets of three, but apperantly, Vannish Officers would be given their own.

Noon had already struck when Thomas first entered the office of his new superior, Captain Harold Kelsen. He was an average Vannish by the looks of it: Slightly darker skinned, round face. One couldn´t identify the colour of his hair as it was shaved off cleanly, but Thomas guessed that it was probably some sort of brown or blonde.

"Captain Sir Thomas O´Neille, at thy service", he made an Isle´ish Salute, the hand raised up in a relaxed manner, the palm facing Kelsen. The Vannish smiled, "You must be my new Isle´ish XO, must you not ? Sit down please", he gestured towards a chair standing before his desk. "Everything nice and easy so far ?", O´Neille sat down, "Of course, mine lord, everything glorious. I hast never been to Vangaziland before, and it quite hath met mine expectations. In fact, thy nation belike hast exceeded them."

O´Neille already approved of his new Commanding Officer. Like most Junior Officers (In the Royal Army a Captain was still considered Junior), he preferred having a nice superior and not a disciplinarian. "So, I shalt beest D Coys new executive officer ?", "Correctly. You don´t have those on the Isles from what I have gathered ?", "Nay, not on the Company Level". The Vannish nodded. It was obvious why he was asking: There was much difference between the Vannish and the Isle´ish Army, and even (Maybe especially) an experienced officer like O´Neille might have differences fitting. "Speaking of the Company, how does it fare ?"

Kelsen sighed slightly, "Not as good as hoped. The whole VFL is currently understrenght, Delta stands at 75 Men." O´Neille´s eyes widend in shock. Back in the day, he had lead a company of Tracked Mechanized Infantry, which stood at over 180 Men, and he new from his time as an Aide that an Air Assault Squadron including the ground convoy would field some 230 Men, "Does this include the Supply Convoy ?", "Of course not, I would have no men left to fight then," came the sarcastic reply. "Anyway, we have four platoons, 4th Platoon is the HQ, composed of me, our Company Sergeant Addi, four attached medic, five artillery observers, a scout-sniper team and a mortar section. 1st and 3rd Platoon both stand at 20 Men, Light Infantry, further subdivided in nine-men Squads, with a two men HQ Squad each. 2nd Platoon is a Mechanized Unit, utilizing four of our MOWAG Eagles, and organized similiar to the other two Platoons", he paused for a moment, giving O´Neille time to fabricate the information given to him, "Now that I come to think about it, were 76 Men with you now". The Captain looked through the files on his desk for a moment, "I want you to organize the Physical Training Schuedle for this month. This will also give you a chance to familizarize yourself with the Company.

Kelsen smiled and gave him a crisp salute, "Welcome to the Vannish Foreign Legion, Mr. O´Neille".

SOMEWHERE IN VANGAZILAND, THE PAST

The tundra expanses rolled before the eyes of the New Hayesalian, a man used to no more than the temperate declines of rainforests and coasts. Distinctively white but deeply suntanned, a difference to the winter-hardened Vannish seated around the man on the bus, he pondered his new future. This once-enthusiastic gentleman had slanted brown and near black eye, with fine, curly, brown hair no longer than a centimetre from his scalp. He had the distinct flavour of a military man but not of this nation. A thin shadow hinted towards his journey. At 2359 hours no more than three days ago the man was a member of a foremost fighting force - the New Hayesalian Army. His days of zipping an MRZR combat mobility vehicle had ended with his charge, a result of a protest against an altogether too-soft government.

The bus arrived at it's destination, a township where only the foreigner and an elderly gentlemen deboarded. That the foreigner carried only a backpack compared with the local's large suitcase drew each a short look at each other, before silently setting off seperate ways. The soldier pulled a document from his blue passport, the page flicking open to his identity page - 'ELIAS JAMSHED' - before being stowed again. A Vannish entry stamp was the only nation to adorn it's pages.

The document, a township map, led the foreigner in simple but utilitarian clothes - blue jeans, a beige mid-weight jacket and unadorned black beanie - to the township governance office. Past the queues of locals gathering documents and paying fines he entered a bland and separate room.

Foreign Legion Recruitment.

The lieutenant inside was friendly yet curt, as an officer overlooking a new candidate - a prospect for the accelerated NCO program no less - should be. Medicals, psychologicals and questionnaires pursued. The issue of the soldier's discharge warranting only a cursory glance compared to an assessment of his junior leadership prospects. A fitness entry test was undertaken, the soldier not excelling but hardly struggling to meet times. Within hours his oath was affirmed, Vannish patches awarded and uniforms - service and working - issued. A Legion private arrived shortly thereafter in a military vehicle to take the newly minted recruit to Fort Janton for a new start and fresh future. The soldier would consider his friends and think of family often, but this quest would help the young man to discover his purpose.

TODAY, FORT JANTON

Looking over green multicam and carefully oiling a Heckler and Koch HK416 was the new Corporal Elias Jamshed. The rookie NCO of the company was also a multitasker, occupying both the roles of fireteam commander and squad driver, in control as a rather distinguished driver of a DURO truck. Thanks to the 'morale-boosting' tactics of Staff Sergeant Redburg, the Corporal had become a particularly respected member of the team, his logic being that he was 'fucked around enough as a private to know how to be a good corporal.' The friendly nature of New Hayesalians still remained a part of those who had left it.

A number of tests were on the cards today - all contributing to a potential fast-tracking to a sergeant rank.

"DETAIL 3 TO THE FIRING MOUND" wailed the PA system over the range waiting area. Quickly stripping his over-jacket and taking up his weapon, Jamshed joined other soldiers and passed the ammo point, gathering a set of magazines. The bare HK416 felt powerful in his hands, and this was a chance to show his marksmanship as a rifleman. The popup targets were proceeded with a three shot adjustment shoot - with minor corrections, the corporal was good to go with another of his rank watching on the spotter scope.

At 300 metres the targets were incy, and just as hard to hit in the freeze. He was shooting for a score of at least 23 of 40 to qualify for a respected marksman badge, and he had been practising regularly to do so. It was a hard slog- requiring some exceptionally chilly night time shoots to get his practice down. The unease washed over him before he asserted his own confidence, taking back control over himself.

"Watch and shoot."

First target.
Bang!
Ping

Second target.
Bang!
Ping

He continued, smashing down the targets until reaching his twentieth. A bang, no ping, no hit.

Magazines change. A cold kicking of himself - he wanted that badge.

More shots. A barrage of misses, knocking him out of expert qualifications. The pings began again and continued, the soldier sweating in the chill.

"Xi - 22/40. Jamshed - 31/40. Sharpshooter Qualified."

The other corporal slapped him on the back, Jamshed championing his win. It was a silver compared to his bronze goal, and reciving it from the platoon commander at the end of the event was a small but significant win. It would take a pride of place on his uniforms.

The cleaning of rooms and rifles upon return to the barracks though was a quick end to celebrations and a return to normalcy.

Captain Thomas O´Neille
-Battalion Run for PT on Friday June 10th. Delta company led the run formation and established the pace.
-One soldier, PFC Enrique Gerke, fell out of the run, completing the run 7 minutes behind the battalion.
-The soldier is tasked as his platoon leader's radioman. He does alright with most exercises, just has a problem with his run times.
-Word has come down that Delta Company has officially been placed on Condition Two. This was a level on a scale designed to measure readiness for deployment. It meant that a deployment was not scheduled in the near future, but that the unit was ready to deploy with advanced notice.
-2 company soldiers got into a fight over a woman. The squadmates have not been reassigned yet, but the squad leader is trying to get them to work it out.
-Word gets out about a soccer tournament, scheduled in two weeks. Teams will come from all over Fort Janton. Each company will be able to send a team. Interest is being gauged to see if the company wants to send a team.
-Found out that Vannish soldiers usually buy their own close combat weapons at base supply or army surplus store. This meant Vannish soldiers carried from a variety of knives, many in tanto style.

Corporal Elias Jamshed
-Completed first maintenance day for the truck. This mostly included checking fluids, including climbing under the truck and reading the gauges tucked behind each axle for the differentials.
-A touchscreen display also ran a diagnostic. There was only a minor fault with the heater being broken. When checked with the mechanic, he was told the parts were on order. The system would be fixed by autumn. There was also one map light that needed a bulb changed. Otherwise, the truck was looking alright.
-Grenade range coming up on Monday. Each soldier will throw 2 live grenades. Of course, they will also throw one dummy grenade in the first, practice run.
-Word also gets out about the base soccer tournament. Interest is being searched for a company team.
-Gas masks will be issued in the coming weeks, which implies gas chamber training in the future.

Military Slice of Life

Postby The Unified Isles » Tue Jun 14, 2016 11:55 am

Monday, 13th of June, 0745
O´Neille quickly went over the days paper works whilst sipping his morning coffee. First Sergeant Addi stepped in the office. It was a rather small office space that the two Second-in-Commands had to share between themselves. Captain Kelsen was located just down the hallway.

In the past week, Addi had greeted O´Neille less warmly then Kelsen had. He hadn´t been hostile, but he definitly seemed to have reservations about the Isle´ish Captain. O´Neille couldn´t mind him, he would probably have similiar problems if he had to work with a Foreigner in one of the International Battalions. "Good Morning, Sir", Addi snapped a crisp salute. "Greetings, Sergeant", "What´s in the news today, Sir ?"

"Well, our Company appereantly did got did place in Condition Two", the Captain handed Addi a paper. The Vannish looked it over critically, "Hm, I´ll ask Kelsen later if this has a deeper meaning. Anything else ?"

"We eke still did get the case of Private Gerke pending", "The Private that fell out during the Battalion Run", "Jump", nodded O´Neille, "He shall payeth us a visit later the day." "We will also get a vist from a few soldiers from 3rd Platoon. Two Privates their got in a fight over the weekend". Addi looked seemingly annoyed at mentioning this case. Addi probably had to visit the on-base military police unit in the middle of the night because of that. "I´d sayeth we reassign one of them to a different Company ?"

The Sergeant shook his head, "It´s more complicated then this". O´Neille just raised an eyebrow, "You´ll see". He then turned around to the door, "Is the Captain there yet ?". "Nay, I bethink there wast a Brigade Staff Meeting scheduled for the present day, twill belike taketh up the whole day."

Monday, 13th of June, 1215
A few hours of paperwork later, the first problem case of the day showed up. One could only hear a faint nod going to the room, announcing it, "Come in", exclaimed Sergeant Addi, sitting at his desk. A young man of rather petite figure entered the room, "Private First Class Enrique Gerke reporting, Sirs". He saluted.

"Ah, sitteth down, prithee". The Private followed that plea like an order. O´Neille looked into the Gerke´s eyes, whilst Addi continued with his paperwork. The Physical Training was the Isle´ishs responsibility for the time being, and so was Gerke´s failure at the battalion run. The Private looked like a Southern European, but his last name suggested that his origin lied more in the North, perhaps in a Germanic Country. O´Neille found the differing nationalities in the Company quite interesting.

"So, I assume yond thee knoweth wherefore thou art ´ere ?". The Private sat their for a moment, trying to apprehend what the Isle´ish had just asked him, "Uhm... regarding the Battalion Run". O´Neille just nodded. "Glorious. Wherefor didst thee faileth ? Thee hast nay history of bad physicals ?"

"It was just a one time thing, Sir, I promise", "Couldst thee prithee answer mine question, Private ?". Gerke´s head turned red, "Sir... It´s nothing, please...". Addi moved his head upwards and also started talking "Everything okay Private ?". O´Neille sighed slightly, "Well, if it be true Master Gerke claims yond it wast nothing, then we shalt trusteth his word. Dismissed", Addi nodded slightly towards the Captain, Gerke couldn´t seem him.

"Doth thee bethink we shouldst investigateth this further ?", "I´d say let it rest for now, if it happens again were going to inquire the NCO responsible and send him to the Counsellor."

Monday, 13th of June, 1620
Some further hours of paperwork passed when the problem case that Addi had described as "Complicated" arrived. The whole situation took some time to asses. It seemed like the two Privates that had gotten in a fight with each other, Private Smirnov and Private Wargram, had a problem regarding a women. The same women.

Private Smirnow, a blonde, blue-eyed soldier from some Russian-speaking nation, had appearently met a young girl a few weeks ago while off the base secretly, and arranged for some additional meetings later. Private Wargram, an Isle´ish, had met the same girl this weekend, frustrated by the fact that Private Smirnow had not shown up to their meeting, decided to instead stay with the Isle´ish Private over the night.

It had just been a shame that Smirnow eventually showed up at around 0200 on Sunday morning. The father of the girl in concern also hadn´t been to amused when he encountered two grown men fighting in his daughters bedroom in the middle of the night.

Present where the two Privates concerned, who still refused talking to each other, and the Squad Sergeant of the two, a rather relaxed seeming Vannish Veteran called Gunnarson. "Sir, I know both of the soldiers have done some shit, but... couldn´t we just let that rest for now", the Sergeant smiled after both perpetuators had left the room, "Thee bethinks thee can reconcileth those folk ?", "Aye, Sir."

"Thee seeth: The girl´s father hast already hath sent us a letter demanding yond both of thy privates art to beest cashiered, 'long with some rather...prickly claims about their origin". The Latter could have easily been described as blatantly racist. "I´ll alloweth thee wend for anon, but if it be true something liketh this happeneth again, we shall cometh backeth to thee. Dismissed, Sergeant."

Gunnarson gave O´Neille a quick salute before leaving the room, "Oh, and Gunnarson. I desire yond the fact yond Smirnow and Wargram were able to leaveth the barrack after curfew is not did connect in any way to thy commanding style."

The Sergeant seemed a little bit surprised before finally leaving with a wordless nod.

After this, O´Neille wanted to return to his paper work, but he noticed that the day was almost over. Addi went already an hour ago to inspect the barracks of 2nd Platoon, and the it was already dawning outside the window, when a new guest stepped in. The fact that he didn´t knocked made clear that he was in charge.

"Ah, Captain O´Neille, how was your day ?", "Average, I´d sayeth, Captain Kelsen. How wast the staff meeting ?", "Boring as hell. You´re dismissed for today, I´ll just sort out a little bit of paperwork before I´ll leave to.

Oh, and before I forget, I was informed today that there is an on-base soccer tournament schuedeled in a week. I want you to manage volunteers for the team and do a few training sessions beforehand.
