Meanwhile, a small Allanean Navy task force was already en route to the conflict zone. Three hospital ships, and aircraft carrier, two frigates and a pair of air defense cruisers formed the front edge of the fighting force, designed to stave off any attacks on the fleet.

Behind them moved ten enormous cargo ships and two cruise liners that the Navy had, in this emergency, rapidly leased. Their orders were very clear - to arrive in the conflict zone as soon as possible, and take on board as many refugees as the ships could possibly fit. Air defense cruiser FKS Praiseworthy, at sea, 173 kilometers away from the combat zone.

They saw it near noon - a broken-down fishing boat that had capsized in the water. Perhaps it was on its way to Europe, perhaps to another Middle Eastern country. Now it was on its way to nowhere - upside down in the water, with desperate survivors clinging hopelessly to its sides, and others bobbing up and down on the water in lifevests. Still others were splashing around, attempting to keep to the surface on their own power.

He didn’t make a decision. He only heard his Navy boots clank across the deck as he accelerated towards the side of the boat, and took a jump. Years of Navy service had prepared him for this moment - hours of exercises in the ship’s gym, weeks in Navy boot camp, years of hard work on the ship. With every splash, every movement of the arms - his legs, clad in Navy boots, were not very helpful in this moment - he grew closer to the child.

Amena was drowning, gasping painfully for air, her tiny lungs struggling saltwater came down her throat. Recently in the nation of Huguenoxe Far-Right Neo-Fascist politician Marie Montgomorie declared in a religious based hate-filled speech comparable only to Hitler, that Muslims fleeing the Civil-War in Iraq and Syria would be banned from entering Hugunoxe, she says quote in a Far-Right news rag called the New Integralist ".......we cannot allow Muslims from Syria or Iraq into the country but we can allow Christians." . The Islamophobic speech was largely religiously backed, she claimed "Our nation was shaped by Christianity and we are not a land of Islam." with almost no regard to modern secular values.

Like a true reactionary, she also took time to bash the left for wanting to take in refugees "The left is mentally ill,.............the left is not even credible anymore." Marie is the current leader of the neo-fascist party known as Front Nationaliste a party largely established through Nihonese money that split from another neo-nazi party called the Huguenot Mouvement Populaire Intégraliste known for it's Far-Right newspaper the New Integralist founded by Joseph Pierre who spied for the Nihonese for 10 years.

25 year old Marie Montgomorie is the privileged spoiled princess of Jean Yves Montgomorie who is the current President of Huguenoxe, Jean Yves Montgomorie found Front Nationaliste in late 2012 after he invented a new Far-Right religiously based ultra-nationalist ideology called National-Sovereigntism which teaches that Nationalism was divinely ordained by God and that Internationalism and all of it's institutions are inherently satanic this explains why the party is so racist, violent and Islamophobic and not in agreement with multi-cultural values.

Honorable Senators!

The countries of Old Europe are on the path of national suicide. The leadership of Huguenoxe and the New Reich are enacting the very same economic and border policies that have been the death of countless civilizations before. These policies are the abrogation of the most basic values at the bottom of Western Civilization, they are the very policies that contributed to the Great Depression, they are the very policies that have once contributed to some of the greatest disasters of history. However, as by the grace of the Gods and the Will of the People I am your Queen, I promise you we will not permit the same errors to be committed in Allanea. I expect the full support of the Senate in this matter.

I wish to point today the valiant actions of the crew of one of our Air Defense Cruisers, the Praiseworthy, which as part of its mission in the Mediterranean rescued several refugees whose fishing boat had capsized and who were clinging to its wreckage even as the cruiser came past them. I am told that there had been nothing more touching than the sight of refugee children, who had but now been rescued from the very brink of death, sitting in the officer’s mess hall and watching classic science fiction films.

We must avoid at all costs the mistakes that the Huguenots are now making - I refer here to the residents of Huguenoxe, rather than to the members of the religion in general. We must not allow ourselves to step away from the basic values of Western Civilization, and particularly Allanean civilization: the values of individual liberty. To do so would be absolute suicide, and would lead Allanea to both economic decline and to a loss of our global power status.

Nor must we fall into error made by some of the other nations - to believe that, out of fear of one group of Islamists, we must support another group of ISlamist radicals, to give arms to those who support, arm, and train Islamist terrorist groups, who deliberately release Jihadi radicals from prison to commit terrorist acts, who engage in rape and slavery to promote their political goals.. That is to say: we must absolutely not support the regime of Bashar Assad. There is no daylight on any policy matter between HIGAK and Hezbullah, there is no difference between the torture-prisons of the Assadites and the ISIS zindans.

If Allanea wishes to remain a Western country, if it wishes to remain wealthy and strong, it must also be charitable. We must then set a goal of accepting in our country as many refugees as will be willing to come. If tiny, impoverished Lebanon has managed to accept a million and a half - surely free, wealthy Allanea should be able to attract at least three million men!

Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. The Huguenox must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be prohibiting the flow to its country of healthy, working-age men and wome nare for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. This is a gruesome example which Allanea should avoid as much as possible. I ask the Senate to authorize an advertisement campaign to be funded in both Syria and the adjoining countries, to demonstrate Allanea as a better destination for refugees than Lebanon, Huguenox, or any other country. As we are indeed the best, finest, freest civilization on the Earth, the most civilized, I expect us to corner the market absolutely.

The German Democratic Reich is issuing its opinion on the situation involving Huguenox. While the Reich itself does not allow much of anyone into its border without passing the lengthy yet effective process of identification, it does not do this on a matter of religion, nor race. The incident on the German border involving refugees may allow people to argue that we are anti-refugee. However this is not the case. As we have accepted refugees from many wars in the past, esepcially with the wars between Montabaur and the Islamic Cooperative.

The Reich condemns the actions of Huguenox. Religion is no ground for banning people from the nation. A region-wide ban would be acceptable if Huguenox did something to aid refugees to better places elsewhere. However, this is not a ban on the grounds of national security and economy but rather a ban on the grounds of Islamophobia and fear.

Meanwhile, aboard the aircraft carrier Prometheus

Yefim Tselikovsky, Captain First Class, looked out among the men - several dozen pilots and navigators, listening intently, taking notes as he spoke.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the chief threat posed to us in these operations is the Syrian regime’s S-300 launchers. Preliminary intelligence suggests there are approximately four battalions’ worth of these machines - that’s at worst, sixteen launchers and about half a dozen command vehicles - armed with the S-300PMU1 rockets. This means, in theory, that they can launch at targets as far as one hundred and fifty kilometers away. In practice, however, low-flying targets can sneak up as close as forty kilometers as they fly low. Moreover, intelligence suggests that they have a total stockpile of approximately one hundred and forty-four missiles, which equates to a capability of destroying one hundred and thirty aircraft and missiles at the outmost.”

“That sounds almost lame.” - said one of the pilots, brushing back her bright-orange hair.

“Which it is, Firebunny. If we fly low enough we can basically circle them. Though of course this would expose you to small arms fire to the ground and ZU-23-2s. Unpleasant you understnad. Further complicating the situation is the enemy’s use of inflatable decoys, sufficiently advanced as to pass for the real things on RADAR screens.”

“Not bad.” - someone commented from the rear row.

“You understand the issue, then.” - the Captain said. “There is only one solution really.”

There was a pause as the men came to understand what was asked of them.

“Blind the fuckers.” - said Firebunny, smiling viciously.

“You understand correctly. We have area scans from satellites and surveillance UAV, and we have a broad understanding of where the S-300 launchers are. We are going to work with the frigates. It will be a three-wave operation.”

The cruise missiles speed along the terrain. They emit no signals, only their precision GPS guidance carrying them at an altitude of twenty meters above ground. They bob up and down, passing over the flat sea surface, hills and buildings alike, swift and certain. Sometimes someone opens fire at them - a militiaman with one of the many local groups, or a government AA gunner with a ZU-23 - but they’re too swift, and the ZU-23s not equipped with the lead sights that would allow them to make a difference.

Forward, forward, forward.

Forty kilometers away from target.

The missiles are detected now, the S-300 gunners fully awake and alert, their fingers clattering on keyboards. Now the missiles are screaming towards each other - S-300s and Hellions.

The mathematics are obvious: Sixteen launchers have forty-fix missiles. The Allaneans have launched forty Hellions. There is nothing the enemy could do but launch everything. A nation with a more advanced air defense network could have handed the task off to less advanced missiles, but that’s not the case here. Nothing in the enemy’s arsenal is good enough to pose a threat to the Hellion - only these, expensive, fast, accurate missiles.

They work too. The first S-300 detonates fifteen yards over its target, just enough to shower it in hot shrapnel, the missile - millions of dollars’ worth of taxpayers’ money - crashing into the ground, detonating in a blossoming shower of unspent fuel and explosives. Some of the S-300s miss, of course, but it doesn’t matter. Of the forty Hellions, thirty-nine are destroyed. Only one, screaming low between two hills, detonates high in the air, showering an enemy missile position in deadly anti-tank submunitions.

The inflatable missile launcher decoys deflate sadly.

The Syrian troops rush now to reload their launchers. Were these professional troops, they would have reloaded the launchers in five minutes. Here the requirement is somewhat longer - but it does not matter. Nothing matters anymore.

The alarm rings hopelessly, sadly, as the RADAR detects four Allanean aircraft. Looking past his window out to the loading crews, the vehicle operator jumps out and begins to run. A hundred and fifty kilometers away, the woman with the callsign Firebunny thumbs a launch button.

Three minutes is all that the crews have left.

Streaking out from Firebunny’s aircraft come six tiny missiles - tiny, that is, by comparison with S-300s and Hellions. Three hundred and fifty-five kilograms each, they speed across the land. Some of the operators are smart enough to shut off the RADAR, others are not. It does not matter - the missiles’ guidance computers remember where the last RADAR beep had come frm, and continue to speed towards that location.

The other pilot thumbs their launch button too, and six more missiles are launched.

In seconds, they begin to impact, screaming down to the four advanced radar stations that have allowed the S-300 batteries to tick.

There are mighty explosions. The explosives - several dozen kilograms of explosives each - shatter the long-range RADAR, blinding the missile launchers.

Then, finally, the other two aircraft fly overhead. There’s no point in hiding now - the missile launchers are blind and helpless, the crew running as fast as they can to escape the inferno they now will come. About two dozen bombs shower the staging area. THese are old, dumb bombs, which have spent years in storage. Some miss. Others fail to detonate, burying themselves into the ground. Yet others strike the inflatable launchers instead of the real once. But one detonates within two dozen yards of its target, showering a launch vehicle in shrapnel, and one impacts directly, tearing the launch vehicle apart completely.

It doesn’t really matter. The battery is blind now. The aircraft bank and turn, their automatic cannon clattering as they engage the surviving vehicles.

Now the Allaneans turn their attention to the other groups in the region. One area in particular interests them. Deir-Ezzor.

It is a city under siege. Two hundred thousand people, with the terrorists standing between them and a steady supply of food and water.

The Allaneans don’t issue a warning. There is no point in bothering.

The first warning that anyone gets is when a B-22, flown in from the nearest Allanean colony, opens its bomb bays near the city. Dumb bombs - targeted with the plane’s ballistics computer - fall down, upon suspected terrorist positions. They’re relatively accurate - striking within a circle of thirty meters off target about half the time. Sometimes they miss of course, sometimes they don’t explode. Those are old bombs. But there are many of them aboard the aircraft. Down below there is a scene of destruction - improvised armored vehicles and real tanks torn to shreds, flipped on their sides, with turrets ripped off by internal explosions, improvised sheet metal armor crumpled.

Then, four aircraft from the Prometheus fly by, dropping GPS-guided bombs from ten kilometers overhead - far from the reach of any MANPADs the terrorists might have. This continues through the day and night - airstrike after airstrike, bomb after bomb, designed to minimize collateral damage and ease the pressure on the city. By evening, the first Ministry of War Press Release is made.

The Free Kingdom Ministry of War has commenced Operation Ladoga. This is a plan intended to relieve the siege of the city of Deir-Ezzor, and to allow food supplies to come to the city. In this pursuit we have engaged both S-300 complexes belonging to the regime, and a variety of targets belonging to various Islamist terrorists. We have scheduled 270 carrier sorties and about five strategic aviation sorties for today, and will continue in the same tempo for three days more.

At the bare minimum, we call all nations that claim to stand against ISIS and HIGAK, as well as anyone who cares about human liberty and sapient rights, to stand alongside us in this struggle. We are willing to cooperate with anyone for the purpose of lifting the siege of Deir Ezzor.

We believe that a combination of food airlifts to the people therein and airstrikes on the terrorists will allow us to solve this crisis very soon. In particular we are requesting all people of good will to assist us with the food airlifts.

Our Central Government wishes to notify you that our country condemns the Huguenoxen decision to ban Muslims trying to enter their country. Not every Muslims are extremists or radicals, and many of them are even peaceful in their views. I'm sure there are people of other religions in your country who are just as fundamentalist, and your intentions are just as extreme as their ideals. We acknowledge the right of Huguenoxe to regulate the entry of immigrants or refugees into your country, and we respect it, but trying to ban the whole group of refugees just because some of them commit crimes can't be allowed, because it will only be at the expense of the innocents. We advise you to conduct more stringent background checks to any immigrant or refugee who wish to enter your country, regardless of religion or lack thereof, not banning some groups just because of their identities.

In the Air

Firebunny grinned as she held her aircraft level. Below her, endless brownish-green hills rolled - the terrain of Northern Syria, so different from the lush forests of her home in Kurzweil province, the mountains of central Allanea, or even the endless colorful roofs of Liberty-City. Far below her, she knew, terrorist fighters were manning heavy machineguns and automatic cannon, the guns clattering uselessly as they tried, and failed, to aim at her plane. She knew also that these men were now the only thing between two hundred thousand people and a supply of food.

And soon they would die.

Her aircraft vibrated slightly as the bombs detached. She didn’t have to worry about them any more - aboard the bombs, guidance fins would move slightly, steering them gently towards their targets. Were the terrorists smart, they would shift fire, aiming now towards the bombs, which they at least had some passable chance of blowing up in mid-air.

Of course, if they were smart, they wouldn’t be terrorists.

The first bomb actually missed, driving itself into the ground about fifty yards off-target and then exploding. Another one came down with tack-driver precision, slamming into an artillery fighting position. Two more came into the roof of a large concrete building that - intelligence suggested - served one of the terrorist factions as an ammo dump. The chain of explosions that shook the ground after that confirmed that intelligence had been correct.

Firebunny turned, making a second pass over the enemy’s position. Partly out of sheer vindictiveness, partly out of concern for those who would soon fly through this first areas of skyline, she targeted the enemy’s AA guns with the rest of the guided bombs. She smiled with glee as she saw smoke and flame envelop them.

But it would not be Firebunny, nor the dozens of pilots like her, who spent the entire day and night bombing and strafing the terrorists, who would be the heroes of the day.

It would be the crews of the unarmed cargo planes that were, even now, making way over the city of Deir Ezzor. Having bypassed the danger zone, they were descending now over the city, their ramps beginning to open in mid-air. The planes were C-10AL Minotaurs, the Allanean version of the large Lyran cargo plane, refitted with an improved rear ramp. City authorities in Deir Ezzor have been informed already of the airdrop. Now it was time to work.

The first cargo loads were now pushed out of the lead air - heavy cargo platforms, loaded with sacks of rice. The city had plenty of water, and all the locals would have to do would be to boil the rice and then eat it. The parachutes, which would keep the rice bags from smashing open as they hit the ground, opened in the air with quiet pops.

The six aircraft carried among them about a thousand tons of food - quite enough to feed the town for three days, if badly.

Operation Ladoga has now entered its main phase.

Meanwhile, at Camp Welcome, a large electronic screen had been set up, with a counter. It said, in clear Arabic, English, and Russian letters: TOTAL REFUGEES EVACUATED THROUGH THIS FACILITY:, with the number currently standing at a few hundred. But now the situation was beginning to speed up , as more and more locals began to arrive. On the first day, the Allaneans landed six planes, with paratroopers and supplies, and flew one of the planes home. Now they landed six more, and were now busily filling the planes with refugees.

On their way in, the planes brought in more Allaneans. These were different from the soldiers who came before - rather than blue berets, they wore broad-brimmed camouflage hats or helmets, and they unloaded heavier vehicles. The locals might think these machines as kin to the elderly fighting vehicles of the Syrian Army - low set, with broad-based turrets and sharply sloping front glacis plates, they were not much unlike the BMPs which continued to clamber around the roads of the ruined country. But they were also different, their bodies clearly freshly cleaned and polished, their sides covered in box-like reactive armor, the turrets carrying optics.

As the vehicles rolled past a column of refugees - men and women with children, queuing up to get food rations and Allanean papers - the commander of one of the vehicles appeared in the hatch of its turret. They could not know who this was - Colonel Murat Ibragimov, Commander of the 1656th Muslim Regiment - but he smiled to them, a man with a short, black beard and bushy eyebrows. He lifted one index finger in the air, a universal symbol among Muslims - God is one,, it meant - and then waved.

As he did so, the BMP turned its turret, elevating its gun at forty-five degree. As it did so, inside it the autoloader fed a shell into the gun - a signal shell for now, designed for providing illumination for friendly troops. There was a roar - and another roar - and another, as the main guns of the BMP-3s were fired, saluting the refugees. The illumination shells hung in the air harmlessly, most of their effect wasted during the day.

There was a pause - for a second the crowd reacted in horror, not realizing the meaning of this. But as the realization - the Allaneans were in fact saluting them, welcoming them, honoring them even - rolled through the line, they began to cheer.

The BMPs - one of them marked with an Arabic inscription on the turret, one familiar for all Muslims - the Shahada, hte Islamic statement of faith. The regiment’s flag - green, with the words Alhurriat waL'iikha', Liberty and Brotherhood, written on it in Arabic and English - flew over the front vehicle.

They moved past the base gate and outwards, into the warring country. Somewhere, the enemy was waiting. Or perhaps - more likely - not.

As you may know, Allanea is right now gathering forces to lift the Jihadist blockade of Deir Ezzor, a city of 200,000 people in Eastern Syria. We believe that it would be valuable if your nation assisted us. While your pacifist beliefs will likely not allow you to provide military assistance, what we recommend is airdropping food. Planes passing high enough to avoid the terrorists’ limited air defenses (2 kilometers would probably suffice) would be able to airdrop food supplies on locations coordinated with the local authorities, wherein said authorities can collect and distribute the supplies, thus preventing starvation in the city until the siege can be lifted by our forces.
