The galaxy in which we reside has given rise to and witnessed the fall of polities, civilizations and societies in a never ending cycle, the never ending spinning wheel that is the universe. The conventions of birth and death have been a longstanding and central law of nature, even in the life of the universe. The cycle begins when a civilization emerges from obscurity due to specific conditions that allow it to emerge from the primordial depths, growing gradually in power and scope until it reaches a zenith marked by peace and prosperity. From there it declines from within and without, and collapses back into the obscurity from which it came. Sometimes the cycle repeats, and other times it ends for good—such is the nature of the universe. That very nature permeates all layers of life, and that includes social development and organization in the form of nations.
A fitting analogy to the "life cycle" of a civilization would be the cycle observed in plants. It begins as a small seed, small and insignificant—yet it is from insignificance where all things emerge, life especially. After some time the seed germinates and breaks out of the earth to begin its life as a plant. Surviving and thriving amidst the elements, it continues to grow stronger—developing branches from which leaves arise. A healthy foliage begins to clothe the stalk, and flowers with vibrant colors bloom. At last, the plant reaches the culmination of its maturity, proudly standing tall above the soil for all to behold. Seeds develop from within the flowers, giving rise to the genesis of more plants.
Of the plants, there are the trees that have established trunks and a healthy, abundant foliage—where all creation can rest under its generous shade. There are shrubs and vines that provide the world with fruits, and plants that bloom with flowers that often prove marvelous to those who behold them. There are also plants such as herbs and grasses that despite their unimpressive height, fill the ground all the way to the horizon. Even the sea is filled with plants that line the sandy bed. There is no single model for a plant—no standard blueprint set by nature that dictates how they may come to be—and that may be perhaps what makes them beautiful.
Yet even in all its splendor, the plant—sad the truth may be—doesn’t last forever. Eventually it will wither and die through the passage of time, returning into the ground from which it sprouted. Its leaves change color from a healthy green to a near-lifeless brown, and the flowers begin to lose their petals in what would be perhaps a graceful death. In time, it becomes devoid of any foliage or flowers—the stalk and branches serving as the remains of a once living plant. Sometimes, even the stalk itself withers away, resting on the soil from which it came.
However, some plants do not die a natural death. Many of them "die" because of external elements that are not of nature's direct intervention. Sometimes, they die because they are used by other living things for sustenance, medicine, or even as decoration. And so it is with civilizations—often stronger civilizations crush the weaker ones, trampling them underfoot and absorbing them into their own. Yet still, in the darkest of nights, just before the horizon becomes alight in flame, others take deep the wisdom of their experiences and bloom once more. For even in the depths of space, the light of civilization still shines, just as the lone plant thrives in desolation.
We are LOTUS.
