If ever you have a question, please feel free throw it out there. Curiosity is essential to understanding.

Also, no. Antigravity is very solidly outside the realm of known science, unless you include inertial "gravity" created using the centripetal force, tangential velocity, and perpendicular acceleration centrifugal force on the inside of a rotating ring or tube. This is where the concept of a ringworld came from. Other than using non-gravitational acceleration to simulate gravity, there is no known way of generating a powerful gravitational field without having a planetary mass on hand.

There's a theory that you can use extremely powerful EM fields to simulate anti-gravity.

But at that strength, it's definitely outside possible technology, and it's also probably unhealthy to be around.

Ehhh... that sounds pretty sketchy. Unless we're talking about field strengths orders of magnitude higher than that produced by the strongest magnet ever produced (45 Teslas), I would dismiss it entirely without any supporting documentation. This not going into great detail about what exactly electromagnetic fields are.

It's just a theory. I don't think it's ever actually been done in reality.

Youuuu might want to change "theory" to "hypothesis" before he sees that. He can get really uptight about that.

Are railguns able to fire explosive shells, like howitzers?

If that's possible, i might name them "Railhowitzers". :geek:

There's no reason why they shouldn't. You just have to engineer the shells to withstand the huge forces acting upon it while it's being accelerated, which should be well within the reach of even low-PMT nations. Howitzers aren't a great comparison tho...

Strictly speaking, a rail-howitzer and even a rail-mortar is possible. Literally all a railgun is is a weapon that uses magnetic rails, instead of chemical explosives, to propel a projectile.

I know. It just always struck me as weird to use a hyper-velocity projectile for ballistic weapons. The whole point is that its profound speed makes it such an effective line-of-sight weapon. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. We prefer using coilguns for lower-velocity applications like that.

It depends on where you intend to deploy the weapon. NLOS-type Gauss artillery is much better for terrestrial combat, but for space-to-space combat - where the velocities you as a gunner are dealing with are much higher - rail artillery is actually superior.

And by the way, whoever brought up the subject before, you can use high-explosive shells in space - you just need a lot of oxidiser. Though if you have the tech level for it, plasma explosives are far better than HE.

That it true, at least as far as explosives are concerned. Meanwhile, the efficacy of plasma over HE depends on the plasma.

I believe it is also possible to fire a gun in space, as both the old formula for blackpowder and modern formula for smokeless contain enough oxidizer to fully sustain rapid combustion.

Would this RP involve extraneous entities (i.e. separate interest groups such as nations and/or corporations that are only somewhat affiliated with the factions)?

The REC project poll is now closed, with the numbers standing as such:

-Alt-Vistoraverse: 7 votes
-Tech Progression Compendium: 4 votes

Hovertanks...

Sure, they look cool... But are they a good, feasible armoured vehicle?

Is it even possible to build one?
