"Here we are, stood upon the threshold of human accomplishment, poised to leap headlong into the unknown abyss of our future. Time and again, we intrepid humans have challenged and conquered the crushing tyranny imposed by our world's natural laws, and time and again we have shattered previous preconceptions about what limits could possibly contain our intrepid spirit. Yet fear once again returns to plague our kind, fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of what we cannot see. This fear of the future is no less a pestilence to us than it has ever been, yet our hearts are still so easily enraptured by the blissful ignorance of the status quo, and it is out of this infantile fear of the dark that we are willing to slow our progress to a halt. And yet... a light, so inexorable in its burn, so inspiring in its glow, shines ahead. To reach it, all we must do is jump. Here we stand, here we stare, deep over the razor's edge."
-Covalt Macanis, Vistora, 2150

"We live in the in-between, in the borderlands - the transitional eras between fledgling nations and galactic conquest, between human and posthuman, between the first gently-lit nuclear fires and capturing the power of stars. The razor's edge, where civilizations have just learned to modify themselves and, grasping fire from the gods, begin to realize the promise of paradise - or torment."
- Dr. G.H. Gellerman, Division of Transhuman Research, Ashkera, 2065

"Without mankind's lust for innovation, nothing would separate them from wild beasts."

-Zhou Fengti, Technocratic China, 2048

"Innovation is like a drug - anything is possible"

-Prof. Nicholas Shpak, Head of Biochemistry Dept. at NPGU, HYDRA-Russian Empire

"The concept of defending the Motherland can change in definition with far greater speed than any human can fathom. Threats to the Motherland are adaptable, the weapons they use against us are adaptable, so too must be our means of protecting our way of life against the aforementioned threats."

-Gen. Elena Trotskaya, Mechanocratic Russia (Blakullar), 2153

"I forsee that mankind will never meet its destiny. I instead believe mankind will build it themselves. It will be an eternal home, on a solid foundation of science and knowledge, with walls made of success and innovation, and a roof made of charity and good will. Within it mankind will forever be at peace."

-Johnathan Clyde Vickers, Cumberlanda, 1789

WELCOME TO THE RAZOR'S EDGE COOPERATIVE

A region founded to consolidate all things PMT, we welcome nations of every form and ideology to craft excellent narratives set in ostensibly futuristic, yet still (mostly) Earthbound settings, and to discuss not only the formation of such narratives, but all fictional elements, technological and otherwise, pertaining to such settings.

So... what is "PMT"? Though discussing the finer minutiae of this acronym is one of the purposes of the REC, there have been plenty of precedents established to build a reasonably coherent definition. First and foremost, it stands for Post-Modern Tech; it is a rank on a scaled continuum of technological levels a nation can use to get a bearing on the type of setting possessed both by themselves and by others. Filling the theoretical gap between the self-explanatory category of Modern Tech (MT), and the more ambiguously named Future Tech (FT), PMT must first be distinguished from both before its own full definition is established. Differentiating it from MT is fairly simple; technology featured in the setting must be more advanced, be it by years or centuries, than that available to human beings today. Separating it from the far blurrier FT category, however, is a trickier matter; though a fairly good heuristic has been established--Future Tech nations possess superluminal means of spacetravel, allowing for effective interstellar travel, while PMT nations do not)--this definition is by no means perfect. Technology is hardly a monolithic continuum, nor must it always be subject to the scrutiny of accurate scientific analysis; less important to establishing a definition for PMT is a hard-and-fast technological cutoff, versus a vast, sweeping panoply of technologies that best contribute to narratives on the smaller, more personal, more familiar scale of PMT, rather than the grand galaxy-spanning space operas claimed by FT.

Easily one of the cornerstones of a good PMT setting is the believable combination of futuristic technology with a society that still remarkably resembles ours; it is the conflict between contemporary attitudes and novel innovations that form the basis of many beloved works of fiction set in a PMT-esque setting. Cyberpunk and its similar derivatives are indisputably the best-established genres set squarely within PMT's purview, and can provide excellent examples of the technology one is likely to encounter in a PMT setting. Advanced new weapons, novel energy sources, and the advancement of space travel open up new avenues that may lead either to humanity's destruction or salvation, while artificial intelligence, transhumanism, eugenics, and the fading mystery of consciousness force us to ask "what does it mean to be human?" No matter what the setting or context, one of the most characteristic features of PMT stories are their location at these critical crossroads.

Again, what must be stressed is that neither scientific advancement nor realism are the most important metrics to consider when deliberating on a nation's status. A setting can range from that of the perfectly naturalistic (Bladerunner, Deus Ex, Neuromancer), to those featuring supernatural or pseudo-supernatural elements like psionics (Minority Report, Judge Dredd) to those outright exhibiting elements otherwise typical of fantasy settings (Shadowrun). Yet, despite the disparity in realism and advancement between these settings, they all have a certain aesthetic and theme in common; the struggle we face as technology increasingly begins to change us as much as we change it. Will such advancements lead to an idyllic utopia or a hellish dystopia? That remains to be seen. All that can be said is that the journey there will be one hell of a ride. This group's purpose is merely to peer a little ways into that exciting future.

Rules and Requirements

Refusal to comply with these rules, both IC and OOC, will result in your transformation into a mildly useful pink sludge via the almighty power of the Nationstates Moderators. You have been warned.

  • Normal NS forum rules apply here. Click here to learn more.
  • In order to join, your nation must qualify as PMT. There is plenty of room for flexibility, but star-exploding pan-galactic imperia are automatic no-goes. Honorary member status exists for certain exceptions, but these will be few and far in between.
  • All shall bow down to me, the exalted Vistora, as the founder of this group and OP of this thread. But fear not, child, for I am a benevolent ruler.
  • Keep this thread clean. No flaming, spamming, trolling, or major shitposting. Remember, pink sludge.
  • Really, just don't be a dick. This should be self-evident, but given that this is the internet, extra precautions are sometimes necessary.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, send a telegram my way and I will try to get back to you.

National Information

Nation Name: Nayba Collective
Population: ~10 million
Year(s) It Is Set In: 2048
Governmental System: Loose Cybernetic Survivalist Mechanocratic Technocracy with Theocratic Elements
Economical System: Survivalist, with both Socialist and Capitalist Elements
National Ideology (if any): That of the Church of the New Future. Broadly speaking, it is Transhumanist. In CivBE terms, it is Harmony + Supremacy.
Political Climate: Relatively unified. Colonies have relatively high autonomy, but the national government's power is expanding.
Important Individuals: The Seer (the religious and administrative leader of the people, also a synthetic intelligence, but started as human)
Capital/Seat of Power: Jokusai (Yakutsk)

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: The Makinaverse cannot be briefly described except as a clusterfook of things Singaporean Transhumans likes. You already know the details of that. As for the Nayba, they use alien-human hybrid cybernetic bodies with full sensory immersion-grade virtual reality implants. For weapons, they're still mostly relying on chemically-propelled firearms, with railguns and coilguns on heavier units. High-powered lasers are largely limited to special-use units. Efforts are being made to figure out how the hovering Chimera units hover so that it can be reverse-engineered.
Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: Some limited supernatural elements may show up later (psychics are part of the settings Makinaverse borrows from). The religion is actually inspired by what seems to be an FT monolith, but it has not bestowed FT tech or even FT planning, as that would get it anomalously banjected from the Makinaverse, leaving it unable to complete its mission attract the attention of various multiversal enemies that are far more powerful than such a tiny planet can handle.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: Non.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: There are some near-sapient AIs, but mostly it's alien-human hybrid transhumans.

Should be able to fairly regularly, except during finals, and depending on other RPs running at the time.

Do you have any questions regarding this group or its members?
Will a region be formed? Will there be the equivalent of the MT International Waters?

Basically the cult elements are operating based off an Ashkeran monolith that is part of a multiversal seeding project designed to boost human-like species to help them survive all the Generic Omniversal Conquerors, while keeping them under the radar. Not only is it intended to be cheap, but it's intended to accomplish its goals with relatively low amounts of contact and interference. (Even if it wanted to, it's very limited and short range in what it can do.) It is the source of the ideas that eventually lead to the Nayba turning themselves into what other would call Transhuman monsters.

Welcome to the REC. I wasn't planning on creating a region, though I'll put it down as a possibility. As for the International Waters, probably, so as to facilitate diplomatic RPs.

National Information

Nation Name: Socialist Federal Republic of Bedemslavia
Population: 52.6 million
Year(s) It Is Set In: 2048, cos catchy numbers r catchy
Governmental System: Semi-presidential federal republic, nominally 'socialist'
Economical System: Mixed economy, with tripartite corporatism and Kardeljian economics
National Ideology (if any): Pan-Slavism, Titoism, Illyrianism
Political Climate: Dominant-party by the Jedinstvo coalition which is in turn led by commies and civic nationalists
Important Individuals: Gordian Slobodan, a few others yet to be developed
Capital/Seat of Power: Ušćegrad

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: Makinaverse. Like most other nations, the SFRB makes extensive use of reverse-engineered alien technology, from bio-lasers created from BETA material to laser weapons adapted from the Chimera to Combine dark energy (limited to pulse weapons and oscillation reactors however). Also are humanity's own technological development such as augmentation, of which nanotechnological variants of such have sprouted in the Dinaric Alps' state-sponsored labs, and battlesuits, developed from old TSFs to become more multipurpose machines. Hovertanks are in use by few elite units, and most citizens have competent HUDs to assist with work and living.
Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: The SFRB did not field any esper (psyker) units during the BETA war, but some espers have escaped to the SFRB. Bedemslav scientists have created prototype applicable weaponry from 'alternative technology', as they are called. However, the more attractive one is the use of qi, a natural life-force studied by ancient Chinese scientists, which is extensively researched and with assistance from the Synkom may cumulate in augmentations of such in the field.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: The SFRB established mining colonies on barren worlds of other universes as part of its portal program. There are also 3 Bedemslav settlements on the moon.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: Various kinds introduced from the PTFS including anime people and vortigaunts, the Cloven, sophont AI.

National Information

Nation Name: The Divine Empire of Ixcachel
Population: 94.7 Million
Year(s) It Is Set In: 2278
Governmental System: Theocratic Transhumanist Technocracy
Economical System: Command Economy
National Ideology (if any): Aztec Socialism
Political Climate: The High Priests of Tenochtitlan are currently the most powerful sect in the Empire, and are effectively the power behind the Emperor's throne.
Important Individuals: Celestial Emperor Achcauhcotl III
Capital/Seat of Power: Tenochtitlan

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: When the last oil wells started disappearing in 2073, all of humanity's efforts turned to developing a cheap, sustainable source of power that could replace fossil fuels. Unfortunately, it was far too late, and they failed to devise a solution before the last drops of oil were gone forever. A world war broke out, with every nation on the planet despite to seize control of alternate supplies of power, capturing wind turbines, hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants in a desperate bid for survival. Meanwhile, the science team continued there work within a secret Mesoamerican laboratory, hidden beneath the Earth's surface. In the end, the war turned nuclear, with 64% of the planet's landmass rendered uninhabitable by the devastating weapons. The scientists continued their work, unaware that the civilisation they were trying to save was already dead. They finally made a breakthrough in 2097, devising a method of efficient nuclear fusion. They returned to the surface world, only to discover a twisted ruin, with the few million survivors clawing at each others throats. Disgusted by the state of humanity, the scientists swore that they would establish a society that would never destroy itself by its own gluttony. Using the advanced devices they had constructed, they gained many followers, and became the first High Priests of the newborn empire. Some of the Empire's greatest scientific achievements include the invention of the antimatter reactor, the development of Sentient AI, the discovery of interdimensional portals, and the development of Neural Uploading.

In short, PMT Aztecs with AI, Lasers, and Human Sacrifice.

Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: No, although much of the populace believes that many of the more advanced devices are magical in nature.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: Colonies have been constructed on the Moon and Mars, and there are plans to colonise Europa, Titan and Enceladus within the next few decades.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: Sentient AI have been developed, and are fully fledged members of society.

I'm not sure if I exactly fit in such a group, since (as previously stated) the definition of PMT vs FT is murky and I don't really pigeon-hole my nation into a set category. It's more of a fluid concept that changes based on the individual RP or RP group it's being used in. It's a vehicle, nothing more.

I'm looking for a reason to RP, and I enjoy the 'Shadowrun' setting (the concept of a group of operatives motivated by financial gain that exist on the fringes of society, not the magical component) as well as the 'Deus Ex' universe (almost plausible, plus I enjoy a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy and base my MT national concept around it), and lack a means to reliably find well-written RP's to participate in. I prefer the intimate stories associated with small units and espionage over mass deployments of armor formations or vast fleets. I like to focus on characters, not numbers.

National Information

Nation Name: Wandering Argonians
Population: A great many (25.8 billion?)
Year(s) It Is Set In: Varies greatly. MT/PMT: 2001-2095ish. FT: Way, way in the future. To the point that the empire has literally forgotten it owns planets, and is just beginning to reclaim them.
Governmental System: MT/PMT: Democratic republic run by a shadow government. FT: Space Monarchy
Economical System: Capitalism; minus excessive regulation and capital gains taxes
National Ideology (if any): None, really
Political Climate: Generally hostile. MT/PMT: A two-party system exists, but independent representation is extensive in most levels of government. FT: Imperialist Monarch bent on conquest.
Important Individuals: MT/PMT: Arakesh Quickclaw, Intelligence Director/Shadow Dictator. FT: Nameless, faceless emperor everyone refers to by title but no one knows by name.
Capital/Seat of Power: Grayrock

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: MT/PMT: Outwardly democratic republic run by a shadow government. FT: Vast, decrepit empire ruled by a distant monarch attempting to reclaim his empire's former glory. Both iterations focus heavily on infighting between the established government and outside factions, as well as meddling covertly in foreign affairs whenever possible.
Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: Aside from the non-human aspect, no.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: MT/PMT: No. There is a small space program. FT: It's an 'Interstellar Empire', like my national title suggests.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: The population is 95% 'Argonian', which I use simply to keep from having to explain the concept every RP. Most people on NS have some exposure to 'Elder Scrolls' species, and humans were boring when the nation was founded. The culture is unique to 'Wandering Argonians', developed over the past 14-ish years it has existed.

Official Stuff

Do you agree to abide by the rules and regulations established by the Razor's Edge Cooperative Council? Certainly
To what extent will you be able to contribute to roleplay and discussion in this group? Typically I check on things at least once a day, unless I'm in a region without internet access.
Are you a part of any other NS groups? Yes, but purely for roleplay purposes. They're in my signature.
Do you have any questions regarding this group or its members? No.
Do you have any extra information I need to know about you or your nation? I have a human puppet nation based on modern Vikings that feature in a lot of my RPs, or when non-human nations are prohibited. They might be a better fit, although in both MT/PMT & FT settings they're more or less uplifted savages used exclusively for martial purposes.

Wandering Argonians wrote:I'm not sure if I exactly fit in such a group, since (as previously stated) the definition of PMT vs FT is murky and I don't really pigeon-hole my nation into a set category.

Accepted. Since you have a PMT canon (tech level) and like interpersonal RP (scale), I think you'll fit in just fine.

National Information

Nation Name: The Democratic Monarchy of Kendi, a nation on the planet Chri-irah.
Population: 38.5 million Birrin
Year(s) It Is Set In: 1783 Since Founding Year (OOC: this corresponds to roughly 5 BF, Before Fall, which itself corresponds to roughly 3009 AD in the current Excidian canon. Excidian canon dates will eventually be retconned to be closer to 3015 AD instead of 4015 AD, which will put the Pre-Fall Birrin civilization closer to 2009.)
Governmental System: Democratic Monarchy: A new monarch is elected every 2 Chriiran years (1.85 Terran Years), maximum service of 5 terms.
Economical System: Capitalist.
National Ideology (if any): (OOC: Not yet developed by me, I'll work it out later)
Political Climate: Stable, foreign tensions on Chri-irah are high.
Important Individuals: (OOC: Not yet developed by me, I'll work it out later)
Capital/Seat of Power: Kenelliki

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: The planet Chri-irah is a very watery planet in its star's goldilocks zone. Currently, the planet's land is heavily urbanized, but the North and South are divided by economic differences, with the North being richer and more prosperous. The first major interstellar expedition is being prepared, with the fusion-powered, AI equipped craft Spear current tly in a test run through the solar system. (OOC: In five years, economic tentions and the expense of the Spear endeavor result in a global, nuclear war which destroys Chriiran civilization. It takes a thousand years for civilization to finally start recovering their lost PMT technology, but unfortunately Excidium Planetis invades at that time)
Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: No.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: Most planets in Chri-irah have been visited, the main moon has a prospering colony city.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: All the sapient beings on Chri-irah are Birrin, an insectoid, semi-mammalian hexapod non-DNA carbon-based lifeforms.

Official Stuff

Are you a part of any other NS groups? My Main Nation is involved in GESO and the LoM. And the GE&T group ATLAS, but they aren't important.
Do you have any puppets of relevance/is this nation a puppet?b Obviously, a puppet of Excidium Planetis which is itself technically a puppet of a dead nation with an incorrectly spelled name.
Do you have any questions regarding this group or its members? Can Excidium into Honorary Member?

Won't lie, it took a bit of consideration, but I think that Chri-Irah might be able to fit. Its status as an alien civ kinda pushes the whole "scale" rule I established, but I'll ad it nonetheless, as well as your main to the honorary memeber's list.

National Information

Nation Name: The Socialist Technate of China
Population: 500,000,000 (tentative)
Year(s) It Is Set In: 2048
Governmental System: Socialist Meritocratic Technocracy
Economical System: socialist market economy
National Ideology (if any): The ideology of the Socialist Technocratic Party. That is, the implementation of technology to benefit all of the Technate.
Political Climate: De-facto single party state, however dominated by the STP.
Important Individuals: Chairman Zhou Fengti, leader of the STP and the State Council
Capital/Seat of Power:Beijing

Setting Description

Briefly describe nation's setting and tech level: The Makinaverse is what happens when you try blend a ceramic vase, then let a ten year old glue it back together. In short, it's a bloody mess. The Technate is how China reacted to the unholy carnage. China relies on reverse-engineered technology from the Chimera and anything they can get their hands on. Most citizens have at least one augmentation, from neural implants that aid in daily life to replacement bodies that are 60 meters tall, used to fight the largest the BETA could throw at them. The most advanced technology was Chimeran climate alteration, the Technate is attempting to reverse-engineer these technologies in the reaches of Xinjiang. Hovering craft is used in small numbers by the more advanced portions of the PLA, and are considered to be allowed for private use. Outside of that, solar powered aircraft is used widely as well, pilots aided by HUD neural interfaces.
Are there any supernatural or fantasy elements? If so, briefly describe them: I guess, considering Bedemslavia is researching qi, so is the Technate. Other than that, there is no supernatural tech at this time.
Has your nation visited, explored, or established livable areas on any extraterrestrial planets/moons? If so, briefly describe them: The Technate has a temporary settlement on the moon, attempts are in place to explore and colonize Mars.
Are there any non-human sentient species within your nation? If so, briefly describe them: There has been some spillover from the Synkom, including vortigaunts. Very little of anything else.

Cumberlanda is a more region-based nation, only getting on F7 and not really doing much outside of the New Commonwealth Society. TAC was designed to be a getaway, that's why you see them more. Plus, less cucumber jokes.

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
African or European?

Accepted. Since you have a PMT canon (tech level) and like interpersonal RP (scale), I think you'll fit in just fine.

Hooray me. :)

Actually, your tech balance is pulling me towards increasing the Nayba tech, rather than the other way around.

Nayba, is it possible if after contact we two have trade agreements on BETA material? This, for example, would be made far cheaper to produce.
