The Pacitalian head of state is in hospital tonight after a missile attack on his official residence at La Palmafiore, 91km northwest of Timiocato's central business district. The archonate, Dr Timothy Ell, and his wife, Senator Giovanna Cazunobar, were seriously injured, and two employees at the compound were killed in the incident Monday.
According to a statement released by the Pacitalian government this morning, the archonate and Sen Cazunobari are undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed location. It is reported that Dr Ell, 42, is in a "serious condition" after being placed in a chemically induced coma to avoid swelling of the brain. The first lady is said to be "stable".
In the meantime, Pacitalian authorities have set up a 30 km security perimeter around the Palmafiore, shutting down the local road and enforcing a no-fly zone. Journalists have been prevented from seeing the scene; however, it is understood the two surface-to-surface missiles caused significant damage.
Although no individual or group has claimed responsibility, defence sources say Margherian separatists are widely believed to be behind the assassination attempt.
In Securitas, Prosperitan leaders reacted with shock to the news of the incident. Premier Servius Bach said it was a "dark hour" for Foringanan democracy and pledged Nova Prosperitas' support in bringing those responsible to justice, should it be required.
"Terrorism is afflicks us all. It knows no geographical, political or cultural boundaries. The menace facing our neighbours in the south is one that Prosperitans must face as well. In the civilised world, there is no room for violence be used to further a political goal. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Pacitalian allies in this dark hour."
The premier said greater cooperation between Pacitalian and Prosperitan intelligence and law enforcement agencies was needed to combat terrorism in Foringana. Mr Bach also expressed his condolences to the Ell family and wished the archonate and his wife a "speedy recovery". He had instructed the Prosperitan ambassador to Pacitalia to present the Pacitalian government with a bunch of flowers to give to Sen Cazunobari.
Security has also been stepped up around government buildings and other key locations with authorities fearing the incident in Pacitalia may inspire separatist groups on the northern side of the border. A spokesman for the National Police Service, however, said there had been no specific threats.
