Many Puertollanoan universities have recently restricted access from San Martinian students, claiming that their education is somehow subpar to those of other students. This is likely a result of the recent reworking of the historical curriculum by the Ministry of Education, in order to provide more accurate and factual information. However, as a result of this new curriculum, many of Simón Bolívar's personal flaws will be taught, including his power hungry and cowardly personality. San Martinian celebrities and politicians alike condemned the move by Puertollano, often claiming that "punishing youth for being taught facts that go against your interests is undoubtedly wrong." Universities have made a similar move regarding Puertollanoan students, stating that the Puertollanoan curriculum has been politicized and tainted in order to obscure facts, and therefore Puertollanoan education is not based on nurturing the skills of the youth but rather on pushing a political agenda.
This spat between the educational institutions of the two nations has brought unprecedented attention to the matter. Many comedians have joked that Bolívar's intense admiration for Napoleon was something more, and there are rumors of a satirized historical TV show, starring both Jose de San Martín and Simón Bolívar characters, currently being worked out, with figures like Bolívar and José Miguel Carrera as supplementary villains in addition to the Spanish. Concurrently, a popular political cartoon of the Puertollanoan President Castillo trampling on the Puertollanoan Constitution as Bolívar looks on, saying "Just like old times," has become viral.
Response at the institutional level has been just as uniform. The award of "Order of the Liberator" has been created, to honor those who uphold the ideals of democracy worldwide and, domestically, those that have shown great dedication and sacrifice for San Martinia. This is to be the highest award given in San Martinia. While similar in concept to the Puertollanoan Order of the Bolivar, authorities have stated that this award will celebrate the fight against dictatorship and for liberty, not the opposite, as the Puertollanoan award represents. Additionally, the city of Mendoza has seen it fit to "celebrate the liberators who actually aspired for the freedom of their peoples" and proposed the addition of a statue in the General San Martin Park, displaying San Martin and O'Higgins, the two most prominent figures of San Martinian independence, on horseback in preparation for the Crossing of the Andes. The statue, if approved, would be called Los Libertadores.
A San Martinian couple, likely tourists, were recently arrest in Orostan on suspicion of espionage and industrial sabotage, and are set to face the death penalty should they be found guilty. However, this has caused an uprising among the public of San Martinia as many consider the Orostani legal system to be corrupt and used by the communist party to kill political enemies, including, apparently, San Martinian citizens. The existence of the death penalty in Orostan is considered barbaric and backwards, a tool of dictators to execute those with disagreements.
Most who are a part of the protests claim that possession of hardware tools is far from a crime, and that Orostani authorities had no reason to arrest the couple. San Martinian authorities have demanded their extradition and warned against their Orostani counterparts delaying the decision, likely because they foresaw the corrupt legal system finding the couple guilty and executing them. President Sánchez even personally spoke out against it and publicly called for the couple to be extradited, promising that they would face the full force of the law if they are fairly and accurately found to be guilty.
This situation hits close to home for President Sánchez, as his cousin, José Sánchez, was arrested in the Orostani state of Andea for vandalizing anti-San Martinian monuments, being imprisoned in Andean prisons despite calls to bring him home.
