Story written by Line Yukimura, taken from article of 03/13/2017

As of today, the government under Marietta Kruger is fulfilling it's promise to renew the stalled campaign of air attacks against the volatile southern tribelands collectively known as 'Free Anchin'. Security and defense were a key point in the former generals election stump, and particularly she promised to cut the seemingly bogged down peace talks and give the okay to new air strikes and operations to try and neuter the hostile entity to the south. Already some reports are being given that at least four combat missions have been completed against what are deemed 'soft targets' on the border, with at least two apparently being outside of the disputed strip entirely. According to the statement released by the government on the matter, the attacks were targeted at 'terrorist hideouts, ammunition posts, and vehicle storage zones...' among other less apparent targets such as material and supply stores.

Image
Provincial Jaguar somewhere over 'Free Anchin' territory, March 12th, 2017
Some criticism has been brought forth already though, with some human rights groups denouncing the attacks, especially those on food stores and other seemingly civilian targets as "... flagrant abuses of human rights and an outright attack on the innocent civil populace of the area, many of whom are struggling to survive as it is." This is compounded by the Provincial Air Services decision to utilize dumb bombs as well as guided munitions in their strikes, with one attack run reportedly missing it's designated target and striking a nearby home, killing the inhabitants. During a statement though, Lt Gen Annie Reitveld of the Service stated simply that such errors were part of the nature of the war, and that the Anchin militants were to blame for making villages the sites of stockpiles and other targets. Other points of note from her statements included a refusal to state definitively an end date for the missions, as well as a refusal to rule out strikes further inside the militant-held area.

Many speculate that perhaps the renewal of air attacks is a precursor to another attempt to push in and clear terrorist forces from the border, especially after repeated cries from the southern provinces for a strong military response after repeated local attacks and numerous kidnappings from homesteads and settlements. The Provincial Directors from three southern provinces have all lodged protests with the Assembly, asking for swift responses to the growing number of raids. Some truth is in the thought that ground troops will follow, as some militia units have been re-positioned to the south, and at least two regular army divisions have been airlifted to De Aar supposedly for 'maneuvers'. It is expected that the overall plan of action for the Anchin insurgency will be laid out in the coming weeks when Marietta Kruger is to hold a more detailed conference at the end of the month. For now though, the nation can only speculate, while the citizens of the southern provinces can perhaps sleep a bit safer at night now.

MEDA Space Negotiations Begin
The Meridian Economic Defense Alliance has begun talks for the development of a joint space initiative between member states.

Thomas Jackson
20 March, 2017 | Midcoast, Neo-Pillowlandia

Midcoast, FRNP- Confirmation was released just hours ago by Press Secretary Rewaldo of His Majesty's Diplomatic Service mission to MEDA that low level talks indeed have begun between the signatories of the MEDA agreement for a new joint initiative. This confirmation was echoed by the Chairman of MEDA and his office. For several weeks there have been rumors floating about the secretive meeting being held in the Midcoast Royal hotel which has had added security and rooms blocked out in preparation for the conference.

Initial rumors were a emergency meeting was being called to discuss the matters of increased insurgent activity among smaller MEDA members or a new effort to further isolate the despot socialist regime of Maracaibo that the alliance has historically regarded as the largest threat to political and economic security on the continent. However, three days ago a series of confidential documents were leaked by an anonymous source detailing the list of mid level representatives that would be attending the conference. Many were confused as only a handful were from any branch of military service but instead government bodies on the regulation of air and space affairs alongside several high profile industry leaders. In addition documents detailing the scheduled discussion included points on funding, launch location, and objectives of a "joint space effort".

Since the documents release, many have also considered that it was a purposeful and deliberate leak by the governments of MEDA to brief the public while largely maintaining the organization's policy of silence in regards to most matters. Others though have voiced concerns that it was the work of Maracaibo hackers, intent on foiling the plans of the smaller states which surround it. No matter the case, the organization has publicly confirmed that the talks are indeed for the negotiation of a joint initiative for the exploration of space and development of space platforms.

The Maldanian Crisis
By Chernyshyov Savelievich
April 4th, 2015 | Turov, Federation of Soviet Republics

Crasna, Maldania —There is a storm erupting in the Crasna region of Maldania. The Rodavia Liberation Army, which claims to fight for the “freedom” of the Rodavian minority and the creation of an independent Rodavian state, has nearly entirely taken the city of Arianu from the forces of the Maldanian government. Following the evacuation of government forces in Crasna 2 months ago, the Maldanian Army seems to be on the defensive. It is unknown whether this is because they lack the resources to go on the offensive, or if they are simply waiting for the reinforcements promised by the Chervakian government a week ago to arrive on the frontlines.

The Rodavians, an ethnic and religious minority in Maldania, have long rejected the rule of the Maldanian government. Following a failed revolution in 1986 and after Soviet peacekeeping forces occupied the region, the RDA went underground. Now, nearly 30 years later, they have resurfaced and stirred up yet another civil war. As many as 7,500 ethnically Rodavian soldiers deserted the Maldanian army when the war broke out, and many joined the RLA. They are very well trained, and have acquired a number of Maldanian military vehicles as well as heavy weapons. When asked if they had a foreign backer, the Maldanian Ministry of Intelligence refused to comment, a sign that possibly powerful foreign backers are behind the insurrection. The GRU has also failed to comment. Of course, during a time where the Soviet government is taking flak for it’s alleged role in supplying Voldurian rebels in Mozria, they are not expected to comment.

Image

Maldanian Soldiers sit on their BMP-2 amid a destroyed village

For now, Turov seems content to let it's partners in Maldania and Chervakia deal with this threat. But for how long? With the recent rebel victories and strong possibility of a foreign backer, the Soviet government is sure to act soon. And if the action taken by Chairman Zhukov is even remotely similar to the reaction taken by his predecessor, former Chairman Ilyich, the Rodavian Liberation Army should be more than worried.

Minilov Forgiving Debt of Some of Its Poorest Citizens

MALJUBAV, Minilov — While other nations tussle over what debt forgiveness might mean, Minilov, the newest member of Casaterra, is adopting its own approach, offering what it calls a “new beginning” to 60.000 of its poorest citizens.

Starting Monday, the government of Minilov offered a debt write-off to Minilovans who have blocked bank accounts, owe less than the equivalent of about $5.000 and currently receive some sort of welfare benefits. They also should have no property or savings beyond a primary residence. By Wednesday, about 20.000 citizens had applied for the assistance, announced last month by President Yaroslav Miher, who touted it as a unique scheme to help the poor as nations look for imaginative ways to clean up their finances but prevent further impoverishment. “This is the first time that someone decided to solve this problem in this way,” president Miher told the National Assembly. “Not by punishment or legal force, but through an agreement.”

Image
Image Financial worries are a common for nearly 60.000 Minilovans
Reception of the proffered debt relief has been mixed. While the country’s Financial Agency said it expected that about 60.000 Minilovans could benefit from the scheme, economists and debt-stricken citizens who do not qualify have been critical. Vlado Simunovic, a 50-year-old father of five, thought he would be bound to get help. Instead, the Financial Agency turned him down, saying he owed $59.000, well over 10 times the suggested limit. “I didn’t even know I owed that much money,” Mr Simunovic said by telephone from his home in the small town of Vinicno, 40 miles east of Sjevernata. “I thought they’d be able to help me at least with something.” Mr Simunovic, a former welder who has not worked since he experienced a series of health-related setbacks in 2007, is not so sure about government compassion. After creditors take a percentage, he said, he has just $172 left from his monthly disability pension. ”Every time we get the electricity bill, we have to reconsider whether we buy bread,” he said. He had already joined the Association of the Blocked, an advocacy group that aims to help the 322.000 people with blocked accounts and is pressing for a change in debt laws.

Currently, creditors can block individuals and business owners from accessing bank accounts and earnings, taking funds until debts are repaid. Miriam Kervatin, president of the Association, said this leaves welfare recipients and the unemployed in a spiral of debt that is nearly impossible to escape. Minilov, a country of 6,2 million, has spent the past fifteen years trying to climb out of a prolonged recession. Unemployment hovers just under 20 percent, and the nation’s credit rating is flirting dangerously with the minimum investment grade. The government predicts meagre growth of less than 1 percent this year.

Zdeslav Santic, chief economist for Minilov’s Seljak Banka, had other reasons to be sceptical of the new beginning. The actual economic benefit will be difficult to quantify in both the short and long term, he said. “After almost sixteen years of successive GDP decline, this is one measure that can help those poorest citizens,” he said, adding quickly, “We must remember that 2017 is a year of provincial elections.” The most recent opinion poll in March said the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) had support from 46 percent of the voters polled, compared with 53 percent in the 2015 National Assembly elections. Mr Santic said that the new scheme offered a short-term boost for the poorest of debtors. “But without the creation of new jobs,” he said, “their situation will not improve.”

President Miher has emphasised that the new beginning is a one-off deal that will not be repeated. “It took a lot of patience, some amount of time and that is — if it must be said — proof that we are a humane government,” he said.

Minilov struggles with unseasonable weather, cold and hot

SJEVERNATA, Minilov — Parts of Minilov struggled Tuesday with both unseasonably cold and unseasonably warm weather.

Police reported 24 people were injured in a 40-car pileup during a heavy snowstorm in the northwestern part of the country. Rescue worker Boris Chmel said the crashes occurred at 10 in the morning on the A1 just outside Sjevernata. The damaged cars completely blocked the major traffic route connecting the city with the eastern part of the country.

Some parts of Central and Eastern Minilov, including Jezerograd, Trziste and Maljubav, were hit by an unusual May cold snap, with freezing temperatures and snow disrupting traffic. Up to 50 centimetres (20 inches) of snow was reported in some areas since Wednesday morning. Apple blossoms were coated with ice in Kademija, a city in southwestern Minilov, while snowfall covered the streets of the capital city of Maljubav. Water was being sprayed on apricot orchards to protest blooming buds from unusually low temperatures.

But in Spajanje, high temperatures and low rainfall have prompted fears of an early outbreak of forest fires. The weather service predicts temperatures will reach 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) in some areas, accompanied by a gusting wind, and that the fire risk will be “very high” in southeastern regions through Saturday. The agency is forbidding outdoor cooking, fireworks and the burning of crop residue. The peak fire season traditionally begins July 1. Minilov will have more than 700 firefighters, over 200 vehicles and 2 water-dumping aircraft on standby from that date.

Social Security shortfall greater than first predicted

MALJUBAV, Minilov — The shortfall in the social security budget will continue to grow this year, reaching 794 million rubles. This is three times the amount that had been predicted at the end of last year. News of the higher than expected shortfall appears in Friday’s edition of the Minilov Korrespondent and has been confirmed by the government press office.

The extra shortfall will come about as a result of lower than expected fiscal income and higher than predicted expenditure. The whole in the social security budget is bad news for next month’s budget talks.

Social security in Minilov is financed in part by income from VAT and withholding tax. However, income from these two sources is going to be lower than the Finance Department had predicted.

According to new predictions withholding tax will bring 282 million rubles less into the coffers of the Social Security Department than was first estimated. Income from VAT will bring in just under 40 million rubles less than originally estimated.

At the same time expenditure is now predicted to be more than 110 million rubles above what was first originally estimated. This is due to high inflation meaning that wages and benefits will rise earlier than had initially been thought.

This double blow for the social security coffers means that instead of the 261 million ruble shortfall predicted at the end of last year, the shortfall in the social security budget for 2017 in now expected to reach 794 million rubles.

Number of homophobia cases up 12 percent in a year's time

MALJUBAV, Minilov — The Centre for Equal Rights and Opportunities and against discrimination (CEROD) opened 104 investigations into possible discrimination due to someone's sexual orientation last year. The centre released the figures on the eve of the annual Minilov Pride parade. While Minilovan legislation may often be used as an example, there is room for improvement.

The number is 12 percent up on the year. The number of cases climbed by 22 percent since 2012. The spokesperson for CEROD Ioanna Pletkova says this is partly due to the fact that the centre has gained renown, but: "We have to stay on the alert. Homophobic behaviour and hate messages are still a reality." 30 percent of the dossiers is linked to everyday life (public transport, family...), another 29 percent to the media (mainly hate messages on social media) and some 20 percent to the work floor. Impunity is a major problem in the area of homophobic treatment on the internet.

Royal Passage
Ard-Rí passes at age 82, crown prince Andrew, the High Duke, prepares to assend to highest position.

Thomas Jackson
22 May, 2017 | Midcoast, Neo-Pillowlandia

Midcoast, FRNP-Today news broke of the passing of Ard-Rí Alec Johgs, formerly the oldest living member of the Neo-Pillowlandian Royal Family. This news, which surprised many across the nation was not entirely unexpected, with the Ard-Rí having been in poor condition for the better part of the last three years. With his passing though, the next Ard-Rí will be his grandson Crown Prince and High Duke Andrew Athrawes Johgs the second.

While the Ard-Rí traditionally holds little power over the daily runnings of the nation, the position is the highest spiritual position in the Neo-Pillowlandian church. With the Johgs family claiming to be able to trace their bloodline directly to the Ard-Rí Lugh of the gods several thousand years back. As a result, the young Crown Prince, who already handles most day to day matters of the nation as High Duke, will be simply adding to his current responsibilities.

The country begins its three days of mourning tonight at midnight, local time, in which the entire nation will essentially shut down. Most businesses are mandated by law to be closed for one business day, with many choosing to remain closed the entire period of mourning. As a result, many stores have sold out of basic perishable goods as citizens prepare for three days where they simply remain home. The oil industry, one of the key exports, has stated that it has been issued an exception to the stature and will continue operations. However, they will have shortened hours tomorrow for respect of his Majesty's passing. This is expected to have minimal impact on the oil market, though today at closing the benchmark Meridan Oil price rose several cents OSD.

The state funeral will take place in three days time, at Costa Dorado. The body will be available publicly for viewing for a week after which it will proceed to the shore by carriage and loaded onto a ceremonial barge and set off. Royal Archers will then, as is tradition, set the pyre aflame to reunite the body of the Ard-Rí with his spirit before he takes his seat upon Lughs council. Crown Prince Andrew will be coronated into the role of Ard-Rí the day after and he will resume the tasks of the position shortly thereafter.

"The Minilovan armed forces are bankrupt"

MALJUBAV, Minilov — The Minilovan army is bankrupt. At least, that's according to Sveje Kuća, the strategical advisor of the independent trades union ACMP, who was speaking on the public broadcaster MNTV this morning. He says President Yaroslav Miher is misleading people with the promises he is making.

Image
Image Sveje Kuća on MNTV
"Such are the facts: we are the worst WESCO pupil. On the list of WESCO countries, we are at the bottom of the table for the defence budget, and we are last where investments in new material are concerned. Each captain of industry will tell you that his company is bankrupt if this company has not made any investments for 10 years. Our armed forces are bankrupt", Kuća said while sounding the alarm on MNTV.

Kuća also claimed one in five Minilovan Army vehicles are not running after breaking down, and that soldiers have to pay their bullet-proof vests themselves.

President Miher has confirmed the government's intention to raise the budget and lift it to 2% of GDP, but Kuća says this is just "for the show."

Miher proposes increasing military spending to 3 percent

Image
Image Soldier following closely President Miher's speech
MALJUBAV, Minilov — In a 6pm appearance on MNTV this weekend, President Yaroslav Miher made the surprise announcement that his government would be increasing the spending on national armed forces.

In a rare departure from government confidentiality, Mr Miher called for an upgrade to armed forces and military equipment, and a gradual rise in defence spending over the next five years to reach three percent of the gross domestic product, compared to 1.7 percent currently. "We must remain capable of durably assuring the protection of Minilov against the full spectrum of threats both foreign and domestic," he said. Minilovan military spending has been declining ever since independence from the Federation of Soviet Republics in 1989. The announcement comes less than a week after Mr Sveje Kuća, a strategic advisor of the independent trades union ACMP, had publicly criticised the government for negligence and proclaimed "the Minilovan armed forces are bankrupt".

Mr Miher put all political parties on notice Saturday that he intends to slash spending on many of the government’s most politically sensitive programs to protect the economic security of retirees and to shift a larger portion of the budget to the armed forces. In effect, Mr Miher appears determined to take sides in a generational struggle between older, sicker Minilovans who depend on the entitlement programs, and their younger, poorer counterparts whose livelihoods are shaped by the domestic programs likely to see steep cuts.

At the same time, this announcement seems to coincide with increased tensions between the Federation of Soviet Republics and Vuortakane, a neighbouring nation closely aligned to the Western Coalition (WESCO).

Political elite gathering in Chandler for a Royal Ball of Sylva - King Johan IV to attend the event
Mona Türm EZ

Royal family of Sylva hosting a ball and gathering on short notice, prompting rapid schedule changes from King Johan IV. Prime Minister Kathe has offered her regretful apologies on inability to attend the event, owing to the current government program negotiations with opposition [more on pg. 11]. Other notable guests in attendance are expected to be of Casaterran nations and diplomats from across the world.

Reportedly, King Juan Sebastian has used somber language in the letters of invitation, leading many to believe that he may be on his deathbed. Experts speculate that the event may include resignation of the King due to health issues; leading to the advance coronation of Prince Eduardo.

The Chandler Acropolis has been a source of gossip for some time, with the moderate King Juan Sebastian taking less and less time in public eye, while the heir apparent, Prince Eduardo, has been in the media attention at an increasing rate.

Known for his passionate and patriotic rhetoric, Prince Eduardo is expected to pursue a deeper alliance with Eisenmaat to balance against the regional pressure from Western Coalition and Turov Pact. This stance would be seen welcome by the FDP (Fatherland’s Democratic Party, Eisenmaat), who currently maintain a minority of the seats in the government.

Eisenzeit will provide a detailed reportage on the Ball on Sunday’s cultural extra.

High-level trade mission visits OS

SILICON VALLEY, Organized States — A Minilovan delegation of government leaders, businesspeople and academics has arrived in Organized States (OS) for a week-long trade mission. Minilov is eager to boost trade with this economic superpower and founding member of WESCO. Economic trade missions usually last between four and eight days, and there is also an official panel and an economic-commercial panel.

Business-to-Business events, seminars, networking opportunities, business agreements ratified in the presence of Minilov's President Yaroslav Miher, and visits to Minilovan companies in the host country make up an economic mission. The Minilovan trade mission in OS had a stop in an innovation park of car builders in Silicon Valley. President Miher, who is heading the trade mission, met the Minilovan designer Lucaş Donnerwolcke who is responsible for designing the upcoming Genesis series of automobiles.

The mission was organised by the Agency for Foreign Trade and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Compulsory conformity check at airports

Image
Image Stricter security checks at Maljubav airport.
MALJUBAV, Minilov — Starting this Friday, all airlines operating passenger services out of Minilovan airports will have to carry out checks to make sure that the name on a passengers’ ticket corresponds to the name on his/her identity document. Stricter identity checks at airports are one of the measures approved at Sunday’s special cabinet meeting on security and justice.

Speaking on MNTV Radio 1’s morning news and current affairs programme Ovo Jutro, the Interior Minister Ioan Pekmez stated: "I have received many emails from compatriots who claim that their identity card was not checked at Maljubav International Airport. We are now answering their concerns. By the end of this workweek, all non-WESCO airlines will have to carry out conformity checks to see if the name on the ticket corresponds to the name on the passenger’s identity card."

Mr Pekmez added that a number of low-cost airlines already carry out similar checks. The Interior Minister denies that the measure will lead to longer queues at our country’s airports. The new ruling has also drawn staunch criticism from non-WESCO travellers who feel they are being targetted.

Fingerprint data to be stored on ID card chips

Image
Image Is a national Minilovan
fingerprint database inevitable?
MALJUBAV, Minilov — The Interior Minister Ioan Pekmez (LDP) plans' to introduce measures that will see figure print data being registered on the electronic chips on our identity cards have been approved by a special cabinet meeting on security and justice.

Mr Pekmez has long been in favour of biometric identity cards on which the data chips contain face scan and figure print data is contained. However, Mr Pekmez’s proposals met with opposition, not least from Mr Pekmez’s own Liberal Democratic Party.

The Interior Minister believes that biometric identity cards will help tackle identity fraud. Mr Pekmez told MNTV News that “There are regular instances of identity fraud. With fingerprints and face recognition you will be able to see if the identity document actually belongs to the person that is carrying it. I hope that we can deal with this today”.

The proposals approved at today’s cabinet meeting are for fingerprint data to be added to the data chips. The addition of fingerprint data will be done gradually each time a new identity card is issued or an existing identity card is renewed. A plan to set up a fingerprint database has been shelved.

Inmates sleeping on the floor in Minilovan prisons

Image
MALJUBAV, Minilov — Some 200 inmates in Minilovan prisons are not sleeping in a proper bed. They are sleeping on a mattress on the floor, often in the corridor. The problem is a lack of infrastructure, as the number of detainees is climbing to 10.800 again, where 10.000 was the milestone set by Justice Minister Ivan Dražen, as reported by the national news service MNTV.

The problem is most outspoken in the prisons of Maljubav, Sjevernata and Jezerograd, where some 50 prisoners are sleeping on the floor. Trziste and Spajanje each have some 15 prisoners without a bed. The figures were asked for by the opposition MP Stepan Benecke and supplied by Minister Dražen (LDP).

Benecke is talking about "inhumane conditions". Trades unions confirm the problem, but say the situation has been worse. Minilov has been convicted before by the International Court of Human Rights for the poor living conditions in Minilovan prisons before.

Meanwhile, the problem of overcrowded prisons is emerging again. The Minilov Korrespondent discovered a figure of 10.800 prisoners at present, after a steady rise over the past month. Minister Dražen is working hard to get it down, setting a goal of 10.000 prisoners. New prisons are being built to provide a long-term solution. The latest surge is due to people staying behind bars while waiting for their trial.

Further Crackdown on Organized Crime
By Chernyshyov Savelievich
July 5th, 2017 | Turov, Federation of Soviet Republics

Turov, FSR —Today in downtown Turov, citizens watched a familiar scene: Internal Security Forces inexplicably blocking off multiple streets. However, unlike most days, this was not the scene of a robbery or ordinary crime. They watched as officers quickly surrounded and demanded the surrender of an armed group holding up in what seemed to be a bakery. Following the refusal of the criminals to accept surrender, our brave comrades stormed the building and dealt with the threat. Unfortunately, 12 of the 14 enemies were killed in the process. The two survivors are wounded, but living. They are currently in the custody of the Internal Security Forces, and await their trial tomorrow.

This is just one of many such incidents in the last 8 months following Chairman Zhukov's declaration that all organized criminals are "Enemies of the state, and therefor to be dealt with in any way necessary to ensure the freedom of the Soviet people." As part of his campaign to remove corruption from our Worker's Republic, the Chairman is authorizing the wholesale destruction of multiple organized crime groups that he claims "corrupt the Soviet peoples." Suspicious peoples are being detained and IDs inspected, and the authorities are removing foreign citizens associated with crime. While many nations have criticized this move for being "targeted at minorities" and "harsh", the plan to combat organized crime from all countries has continued to move forward. If you see any suspicious activity or need to report an incident, contact the Committee for State Security.

Ostlandian Veteran Celebration

Large Crowds filled the Streets today in Krossa celebrating National Veterans day. the Holiday was instated in 1949 to remember the countless Maltecnans that gave their lives to defend Ostland from the FSR, Sylva, and Eisenmaat. The Celebration filled Krossa with over 2 million people and cheers and singing could be heard for miles around. Hanz Luftenbuur made a speech today on the Steps of the Capital Building, one of the statements he said that made the crowd cheer was this ''Our great people have gone through many hardships, but the Great War of Ostland showed the Spirit, and Nationalism of our people, and the will for a new tomorrow!'' Ostlandian Veterans from the 13th Panzergrenadier Battalion walked down the street surrounded by cheering crowds, the Veterans were awarded the Iron Cross and many other prestige Medals.

March of Honor

During the Veterans Day celebrations decorated Soldiers of the 13th Mechanized Division ''Krossa'' marched in their dress uniforms down Empire Square in Krossa. The Unit had participated in multiple operations against Groshian insurgents and terrorist threats and is commanded by General Ron von Hok who served in the War of Chervakia in the late 80's. General Hok resided in his personal vehicle saluting President Hanz while troops under his command marched behind him. The unit marched singing ''Ostland über alles'' a song sung by Ostlandian soldiers since 1842. The crowds cheered for Von Hok and the 13th for their service, many other units participated in the march.

Groshians riot

During the National Veteran Day celebrations Groshians went to the streets to protest Ostlandian 'oppression'. Police were deployed in case the protests went violent. After 2 hours, the protests indeed went violent when a Groshian male threw a defective grenade into the police line. The Police swiftly threw it back, and fired tear gas grenades. Raids were conducted on suspected plotters of the grenade throw later that day, in response to the attempted terror attack home guard units were deployed to suspected areas where the terrorists dwell.

Special Feature: Advancing along a Road of Environmental Harmony?
New Directions from the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization

Hwang Mi-Sun; 2017 / 07 / 13

As we approach the 30th year of the National Economic Miracle, Menghe stands as a nation transformed. In all areas of the country, from the cities to the countryside, prosperity has ushered in a revolution in standards of living and brought uplifting hope for future progress. Hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of life-threatening poverty, and all areas of economic production have soared to new heights. Famine itself has become nothing more than a remote memory. These achievements, brought about through the well-crafted reforms of Choe Sŭng-min and the Menghe Socialist Party, have ushered in an economic golden age and set the country marching as one along the path to greater heights and a brighter future.
Image
The venerable Ri In-yŏng at the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple.

Yet in some circles, a question has been raised: does this growth come at a cost? Have we, in embracing a materialist model, lost sight of other social virtues? This is the question raised by Ri In-yŏng, the head of the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization headquartered in the city of Sunyang. A devout Chŏndoist, Ri In-yŏng sees respect for nature as a central aspect of proper behavior, and has encouraged his followers to live their lives in harmony with the natural world around them. As a result, he has risen in the national headlines, first in the province and now around the country as a whole.

What makes Ri In-yŏng's approach special is that it frames environmental well-being as a matter of harmony and unity, with humankind and nature existing side-by-side and contributing to the well-being of one another. This has long been a common thread in Chŏndoism: it has long been said that "the scholar cultivates the garden, and the garden cultivates the scholar." Indeed, Imperial Menghe was renowned for sweeping architecture that united natural and manmade motifs, shaping the building to fit its surroundings and vice versa. This was also the guiding aim of Imperial Menghe's advanced water management policy, which built levees and dug canals to prevent erosion, irrigate fields, contain floods, and open new doors for river transport. Only by shaping economy and nature to support one another did the Ŭi dynasty surpass all its international contemporaries in development.

This outlook on the world contrasts favorably with the prevailing modern environmental worldview in Casaterra, which sees nature and humankind as separate entities that must be kept pure. Far from slicing out separate reserves for nature and building around them, the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization aims to bridge the two domains. In recent years, it has organized major cleanups of lakes and streams around the country, and collected donations for the establishment of parks and green spaces in Menghe's expanding cities. Said Ri In-yŏng, "interaction with the natural world is a way to clear one's mind and cleanse one's spirit. These activities are as essential as breathing and sleeping. By bringing people out of the concrete world, and into the world of water and leaves, we seek to improve the health and well-being of our entire society."

Another favorable contrast comes from the choice of approach. In spite of his above aims, Ri In-yŏng does not characterize himself as an activist, and does not characterize the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization as an activist movement. His goal, he says, is not to challenge the government, but to work alongside it. Ri has stressed the power of positive measures, such as educating citizens in how to reduce environmental damage while also spreading interest in Menghean culture. He regards protests and shock demonstrations as “negative” events, which undermine harmony by sowing division, anger, and general disorder. As with all Sŏn Chŏndoism, the emphasis is on the personal acts one can take, as an individual or as part of a group, to support well-being in the world.

The venerable Ri In-yŏng’s approach “represents a potent counterexample to the standard practice of environmental activism in the West,” says Ro Jae-sŏk, a prominent scholar of Political Science at Donggyŏng Central University. “Until now, Western environmental organizations have relied heavily on combative, radical, even violent methods to fight for change, and have met heated opposition along that path. Many have even asserted that our culture is “anti-environmental.” The success of the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization demonstrates that nothing could be further from the truth. What these radicals do not see is that it is that environmentalism can emerge independently within Menghe, but that it cannot take the form they expect, a form which is fundamentally incompatible with Menghean values.”
Image
Sites like Mount Chŏnmunsan, a famed arch
approached by stairs, have long characterized
Menghe's unity of man and nature.

In fact, it is because of its non-combative and harmonious approach that the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization has reached its greatest successes. The experienced reader will recall that in 2014, the administrator of Danyang Prefecture, Gangwŏn Province personally intervened in the dismissal of a small-city mayor who had sent armed thugs to disperse Chŏn'gwangsan followers cleaning garbage from a local pond – and in 2016 he was promoted to Governor of Goyang Province! Indeed, local officials across the country have competed to extend open hands to local Chŏn'gwangsan branches, and have made sure that the local authorities do their part in enacting environmental regulations.

Indeed, earlier this week on July 9th, Marshal Choe Sŭng-min, in his authority as General-Secretary, issued a firm public statement underscoring the Menghe Socialist Party’s commitment to a clean environment and warning industrial enterprises that anti-pollution regulations will be steadily tightened in the coming years. Less has been said about his remark, later in the speech, that the Chŏn'gwangsan Temple Organization’s embrace of traditional harmonious ties between man and nature should serve as the model for future Menghean policy.

What, then, do such “harmonious ties” mean for the national economy? Is there a tradeoff between productionist and environmentalist aims? The answer is: not necessarily. In the years since the Decembrist Revolution, the Menghe Socialist Party has campaigned to eradicate famine, and is now campaigning to eradicate poverty. No effort to improve the national standard of living can be complete without campaigns to address the new social problems emerging from transformational economic growth, such as environmental pollution, the erosion of harmonious values, and the loss of green spaces in cities. Indeed, all of these measures are consistent with the Party Center’s push for a “second economic transition” which pushes Menghe into the world markets for innovative product development, original brand marketing, and capital-intensive manufacturing. The proliferation of more efficient machinery, the installation of emissions scrubbers, and the continued expansion of Menghe’s peaceful nuclear power sector will all allow emissions to fall even as production increases. Furthermore, what production does take place can be geared toward the promotion of social well-being and sustainable public goods, rather than consumer commodities alone. All of these measures will allow continued improvement not only in the environment as an abstract idea, but in the real standard of living of the Menghean people.

Asked if he had any concluding comments following our exclusive interview, the venerable priest smiled genially, and replied: “The old sages once said: ‘People follow Earth; Earth follows Heaven; Heaven follows the Way.’ Without Earth, there is no Way.”

The Menghe Socialist Party is proudly committed to its policy of building a civil and constructive political discourse. For that reason, commenting on this article is restricted to authorized editors and contributors. Enjoy your day!

"Maljubav is lying about air quality"

MALJUBAV, Minilov — The air in Maljubav is more polluted than the city admits. That's according to the environmental pressure group ClientEarth. In a statement, ClientEarth is talking about "scandalously high" levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the streets of our capital and also about "alarming mistakes" where the official measuring is concerned. "The Maljubav city council is putting in danger the health of local people, who have a right to correct information." ClientEarth made detailed measurements at a number of busy roads.

The figures revealed by ClientEarth are almost shocking. At the US Embassy NO2 concentrations of almost 100 microgrammes per cubic metre were seen. An international health guideline is talking about a maximum yearly average of 40 that should be taken as the maximum in order not to impact on citizens' health.

The strange thing is that the city of Maljubav is releasing other (lower) figures. Their highest figure is around 50, about half of what ClientEarth measured. According to Udo Tadic of ClientEarth, the Maljubav city council deliberately avoids measuring in the most polluted spots. "They take their measurements on streets with less traffic and therefore less pollution." Former measuring stations in peak areas were switched off, it is said.

"We think Maljubav is not doing what it should be doing to protect the people's health", ClientEarth says. "The image they are giving is better than the reality."

Tensions between Sylva and Tiperyn are mounting after Chandler accused the island nation of violating Sylvan airspace and maritime waters above and around historically disputed islets. The Sylvan Defense Ministry said it has registered 138 violations of the country’s airspace on Wednesday. A top defense ministry official claimed that all the violators have been “intercepted,” though as of yet the volatile situation in southern Casaterra has not reached a head.

“We want peace, we are not looking for a fight or for trouble in the Azul, but there will not be an aircraft which will not be intercepted,” Sylvan Defence Minister xxx xxx said in a press conference this morning.

All of the airspace violations occurred in the central and southern Azul above tiny Sylvan islets, disputed by the two countries. The islands have been under Sylvan control since 1845, when they were annexed as part of a treaty with the Tiperyns following a brief war. The archipelago itself is virtually uninhabited, with only 8,000 residents on the largest of the disputed islands, Acores.
In all cases, Tiperyn aircraft were identified and intercepted by Sylvan fighters, while in nine cases the interception process resulted in “near combat situations,” according to the Sylvan Defense Ministry. However it is unclear exactly what that constitutes.

In addition, two Tiperyn missile boats entered Sylvan territorial waters off the coast of Agatha, a small island west of Acores that is uninhabited save a small military outpost. They came close enough to the shore that “soldiers on the land could see those onboard.”

The vessels, which were taking part in a maritime exercise code-named Seawolf stayed in Sylvan territorial waters for about 40 minutes. As Tiperyn news agencies reported, last month Agatha was described as a “Tiperynian island” by Tiperyn’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

While the Septentrion League and the wider international community recognize the sovereignty of Sylva over the islands, Tiperyn has a list of issues regarding the delimitation of territorial waters, national airspace, exclusive zones, etc. Tiperyn also claims “grey zones” of undetermined sovereignty over a number of small islets, most notably the islets of Acores and Agatha.

The Sylvan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong communique saying that the incident “constitutes a flagrant violation of international law” and that if Tiperyn continued to challenge the border, “severe, dire consequences would follow.”.

“It is clear that there are forces in Tiperyn that do not want understanding and good neighbourly relations between the two countries,” the Sylvan ministry added.

Meanwhile, an Entente Cordial spokesperson sent a strict message to Tiperyn, urging that it respect the sovereignty of the EC’s member states.

“The EC underlines that Tiperyn needs to commit itself unequivocally to good neighbourly relations and urges Tiperyn to avoid any kind of source of friction, threat or action directed against a member state, which damages good neighbourly relations and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” the spokesperson said.

The same official added that negative statements that damage good neighbourly relations should also be avoided.

“Moreover, the EC also stresses the need to respect the sovereignty of member states over their territorial sea and airspace,” the spokesperson said.

Job increase not reducing poverty rate

A lot of new jobs have been created by the Yaroslav government, but still, this has hardly helped to combat poverty. That's according to the Kademija Institute for Labour (KIL). About 40.000 people who managed to find employment over the past 10 years are still finding it hard to make ends meet. This rate of so-called "working poor" is among the lowest in the Casaterra, but figures are going up. Researcher Ides Cinaise says that the extra jobs that were created are often not high-quality jobs. Cinaise commented: "About 40 percent of the new jobs are part-time, half of them are low-paid, and about half of them are just temporary." This makes people more vulnerable, Cinaise adds. At the same time, the situation of the unemployed has deteriorated, says the KIL. About 10 years ago, some 30 percent of those out of work was living in poverty. Now, this has risen to 45 percent.
