OPENING ACT
The arena was dark, but the noise of bustling bodies and muted chatter indicated that there was life in this dark space that was the recently refurbished Yosef Ben-Or arena. The audience, all 6,500 of them had travelled from across the world to watch a special commemorative night of the WorldVision Song Contest. For the contest's 40th anniversary the competing broadcasters had agreed to hold a unique competition, pitting the greatest song from each nation against each other, which would later be coined the 'Best Of' contest. The hosts were internally selected, based off of WorldVision records, and thus Polkopia and Kishrael, with 4 wins each were chosen, both having also hosted previous editions of the contest. The format was a unique one, with half of the entries being performed in Shatilaurchev, Kishrael, and the other half being performed in Valinkova, Polkopia. The interesting arrangement allowed for greater live exposure for fans, more tickets and more inclusion. A few moments passed before the dark arena was lit by a red number 10, which then began to countdown, 9, 8, 7 and so on. The crowd became ecstatic, cheering loudly, both for their favourites but also in a more general chorus of excitement. The audience then began to countdown too, until 1, when sparks flew from the stage and the arena exploded into light, all apart from the stage. They then dimmed again as a lone voice appeared from the stage.
We're going for a ride...
I'm gonna' take you on a ride...
At this, the stage comes into colour, there is no one on stage, the floor is blank as the camera provides an aerial shot. From the corner a man wearing traditional Turkic dress marches on, carrying a mandolin. He sits in the middle of the stage and begins to strum the mandolin, a simple tune. At this the stage turns blue, he continues as a stripe of white then slashes the middle. He looks up and smiles as a graphic of a dove floats around the arena on the LED walls and lands in the centre of the stage, making the Anollasian flag. Next, from one side of the stage a woman with only simple cloth protecting her modesty, wearing face paint comes on, carrying something resembling a didgeridoo. On the other side a petite girl held a dizi to her mouth. They both assumed positions away from the man, and they played their instruments, once again simple notes, as colour exploded on the stage, particularly from the side of the woman with the didgeridoo, with colours of Britonisea splashing across the corner of the stage, a similar thing happening on the other side, but with the national colours of Bloodbath Generation.
This continued for each nation, as a musical representative appeared carrying a traditional instrument and began playing a simple yet unique tune. Finally when the stage was full and colour was being splashed throughout the stage with the LED lights, the musicians from Kishrael and Polkopia walked out together, the Polkopian man was wearing Cossack dress and carrying a huge balalaika, it looked relatively uncomfortable however he placed it down and began the melody like the others did. A Kishraeli man also came out in what can only be described as biblical dress. He was the last to arrive and he carried a shofar, a large musical horn. He took a large breath and blew it, as the colours off the stage were blown away and the other musicians went silent. After he had finished everything went quiet once again. A lone voice came from somewhere singing the same two lines once again.
We're going for a ride...
I'm gonna' take you on a ride...
The stage appeared bathed in light as the normal WorldVision music began, signifying that the normal order of the show was about to begin. The Kishraeli host for the evening, Riva Goldblaum, a well known model and TV-presenter (and more recently, singer, watch this space) walked out onto the stage. Her Polkopian counterparts were doing the same in Valinkova. Riva began, "Well thank you very much for that opening act! GOOD EVENING WORLD! I'd like to start by welcoming you to Shatilaurchev!" The audience cheered to affirm her welcome, she then turned to a screen at the back of the stage where the images of Valinkova were shown, the audience interacting with the hosts similarly. "So tonight is a very special evening, it is where we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the WorldVision Song Contest! Wow! Tonight ladies and gentlemen we are in for a treat as the best entries from over 20 countries are going to be performed both on this stage in Shatilaurchev and an identical stage in Valinkova!" The audience cheered at this information, but there was an underlying feeling of wanting her to hurry up. "But this is still a contest, and these artists will once again compete for your vote! So... without further ado, the moment you've been waiting for, let the WorldVision Song Contest 'Best Of' Anniversary Special, BEGIN!" The audience gave a loud roar as response, it was time for the best entries to fight it out...
INFORMATION REGARDING THE SPECIAL EDITION
'WorldVision: the 'Best Of' Edition' will be an opportunity for nations to re-enter their highest placed artist, or their most-loved entry into the WorldVision Song Contest in a one-off, all-star edition. Should the edition prove to be a success, the Committee could consider investing in future special editions of the WorldVision Song Contest.
In a WorldVision first, two nations will host a WorldVision Song Contest. Both the Kishraeli and Polkopian national television broadcasters will be working closely together to produce this special edition of the Contest. Both Kishrael and Polkopia have won the WorldVision Song Contest a record four times and were an obvious choice in regards to the hosting of the 'Best Of' edition. In regards to how the contest will be set IC'ly, the even placed nations will perform in one city, and the odd placed numbers will perform in another. There will only be one contest thread. Below are the preliminary rules of the 'Best Of' Edition. The host cities are Valinkova, Polkopia and Shatilaurchev, Kishrael.
- The 'Best Of' Edition will follow the same format as the regular WorldVision Song Contest. The voting format will remain exactly the same.
- Unlike the regular edition, no puppets are allowed to enter the Best Of edition
- Nation's are free to enter any entry that has entered a previous edition of the contest under the same name of that nation: nations are free to edit the entry's performance, however nations cannot edit the lyrics. If a nation is found to have edited their lyrics, their entry will be disqualified.
- Unfortunately, debutante nations cannot enter the contest, however, if a debutante nation has signed up for the 40th WorldVision Song Contest, said nation will be able to vote in the 'Best Of' Edition.
- See here for information on the format of the regular edition of the WorldVision Song Contest
- All songs performed as an odd number in the running order are IC'ly performed in Valinkova, all songs performed as an even number in the running order are IC'ly performed in Shatilaurchev.
Anything goes regarding the stage, if you want fire, have your fire, if you want live animals, ensure they're chained or whatever, as long as it is reasonable. But yes, go wild, the stage is yours.
