Okay, suppose you're an evil noble. You can drop enemy peasants into a woodchipper all day, and it doesn't bother you much. Your wife/husband, however, would be worth a lot. If sacrificing your True Love gives you way more magic, that would be personal-value-based magic.

For comparative advantage, let's say that a True Love always has the same magical value, mostly. So you pay some peasant 1,000 gold pieces to sacrifice *his* true love, and use the energy from that instead of sacrificing your spouse. You have now managed to cheat the magical cost, kinda.

Make powered armor by sacrificing a horse (and enough hay and water to run it for like ten years). Make furnace fuel by draining the heat out of lava. Make healing patches by draining the life-force from chickens. Making homing bolts by draining the intelligence from chickens.

Although you might have trouble getting enough energy in general, since medieval farming doesn't produce a lot of it.

You can't use a horse to make powered armor, because the horse can't cast magic... and stealing the horse's life force would require magic, which would cost you your own life force anyways.

So yes, you can make homing bolts, you can make healing patches, you can make pocket dimension crossbow bolts... but that all costs you part of your life, and a few of those would come at a pretty high cost: the healing patches would cost you life equal to the time needed to heal the wound by natural means.
