Ministry of Industrial Development, Commonwealth of Hintuwan FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 2022 | January 26th The Ministry of Industrial Development reports that pork price continues to fuel an elevated inflation. Based on our findings, Hintuwan pork CPI increased by an average 8% for the first eleven months of 2021. Meat price inflation topped 16.8% in 2021, the highest annual price increase of any major food item since 2012. To put this into perspective perspective, rice, another trade regulated commodity, was 11.0%, back in 2011. The Ministry blames the lack of competition for the high pork price inflation. We estimate that only four large conglomerates control 55-85% of the pork supply chains in the country. Furthermore, an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in May of 2021 severely crippled the capabilities of those manufacturers to maintain the usual rates of pork sales. With this industrial structure, the bargaining power over pricing is stacked against farmers and ranchers and, ultimately, consumers. In order to meet consumer market demand the government of Hintuwan recognizes the need to continue importing pork products and immediately compensate for the shortfall in domestic supply. This afternoon, President Bulalacao approved an increase in the maximum amount of pork to be imported from abroad under the minimum access volume (MAV) of the country's current trade policy by 23,290 metric tonnes (MT). The logistics of granting tax incentives to foreign pork producers and manufacturers is currently being debated by our national legislature, the Kapulungang Bayan. Other political responses to the ongoing crisis are also being considered. Nonetheless, the Ministry of Industrial Development calls on the international private sector to invest in Hintuwan during this time of need and help in stabilizing our emerging market economy. Signed, Benaiah Magbantay Minister of Industrial Development Hintuwan |
