Federal deputy Cleber Lopes, new leader of PDN
The last nine months were troubled for the National Democracy Party (PDN), as, during this period, the party has elected three different persons to the post of Party Leader, João Amaral in January, Tábata Amoêdo in March and Kisol Freitas in July. All the three elections were lively, showing clearly the division among the PDN.
However, the federal deputy Cleber Lopes surprised everyone when the results of 2019's fourth PDN leader election came out today. With 78% of the votes (71 out of 92), the new leader of PDN seems to have restored the unity of PDN both in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. In the next weeks, it is expected that Cleber Lopes will join forces with federal deputy Luiz Fiuza, leader of the Catholic Conservative Party (PCC), to consolidate the group of Opposition against the government of Prime Minister Paulo Lacerda, of the Marian Workers' Party (PTM).
"Although deputy Fiuza fits in a more conservative definition than me, we agree on the great importance of continuing the work of ex-Prime Minister Leonardo Pinheiro in building a more free market in Dragão do Mar. Currently we are the minority in the parliament, but my view is that we must do absolutely everything in order to stop more accomplishments of the ambitions of economic interventionism of Prime Minister Lacerda" said Cleber Lopes during the assembly of PDN members.
