Gabriela Rey is the daughter of a small businessman, who ran a plumbing company out of Veracruz, Mexico. Her father was an alcoholic and frequently beat her and her mother. When she was very young, she was overweight, and was at the bottom of the social pyramid, being constantly made fun of. As a result, she preoccupied herself with academics, outsmarting nearly everyone else. However, with the early years of ostracism in her mind, she was also insecure about her weight and strove to keep herself in tip-top condition.

During her early teenage years, when puberty hit, and she shot up a foot and shed the fat, her hitherto bad social fortunes rapidly reversed. With newfound confidence, she took up music and dance, becoming a great dancer, singer and first-chair violinist in her school's orchestra.

Scraping together enough money for tuition while her father was in alcohol rehabilitation, her mother sent her to the Uldartre Academy with a change of clothes, an airline ticket and a few hundred libres in her pocket in an effort to guarantee her academic and business success in life.
