Historic Vote Called in the Peninsular People's Assembly
Political Newcomer Pushes for a Shakeup

By Yuli Tsaplin | 18 January 2015, 00:00 NST

Only once before in Nerotysian history has it happened; a vote of no-confidence proposed in the Peninsular People's Assembly. And today's proposal has ignited an uproar.
Image
Prazdnikov speaks in the Assembly

A vote of no-confidence, if passed, would dissolve the current Assembly and thereby neccessitate reelections of all Assembly officials. Its a drastic and daring move, a total shakeup of the Assembly. However, since regular elections take much longer and are sparsely spread through the year, this sort of mass shakeup can be the only way to achieve a decisive majority for the dueling factions.

This has happened only once before. In 1972, a fledgling reformist politician named Viktor Fenenko singlehandedly changed Nerotysian politics when he called for a vote of no-confidence. The Assembly at the time was sharply divided and no single faction held a dominant position, and as such the government stagnated and began to pull apart by the seams. Fenenko thought he could rejuvenate Nerotysian politics and even sieze power himself, to lead the nation into an imperialistic golden age.

The 1972 vote failed to pass, however it did draw the public's attention towards the indecision of the Assembly, leading to a scourge of riots across the country.

Now in 2015, two forces conspire to once again transform Nerotysian politics; the ruthlessness of an already-dominant faction and the confidence of a burgeoning minority faction. Anya Rusakova was elected Chairperson in 2005, and this was a landmark victory for the "Rusakovan Revisionists," those who favor a mixed economy with allowances for some private markets. Now these revisionists want to turn their slim majority into a super-majority, and they've proven themselves to be incredibly effective polticians.

Next, and perhaps more importantly, there are Kutikov's "Peacemongers." Since its creation Nerotysia has refused to even acknowledge non-communist nations and has driven itself down a xenophobic path of aggressive militarism. Kutikov, however, has been campaigning to change that, and his calls for formal relations with nations such as Alexiandra and Kolintha are as unprecedented as they are radical. For years they have slowly grown in popularity and strength, and now they are reaching for a majority over their jingoistic rivals.

Enter into this potent mix Ermolai Prazdnikov, ambitious but unknown, the new underdog of Nerotysian politics. He himself is both a Revisionist and a "Peacemonger," and now appears to be using the ambitions of these factions to boost his own career. He called for the vote on Thursday, and after two days of deliberations the motion was put through. Now he has become a renegade hero in much of the popular press, seen as an inspired reformer who has turned the slow-moving Assembly on its head. One wonders what further ambitions Prazdnikov houses, but if he clashes with Kutikov or Rusakova for power he may now pose a serious threat to those juggernauts.

The Assembly shall vote on Monday. One wonders if this gamble will even come to fruition, as a vote of no-confidence requires a two-thirds majority to pass. If it does, the effects will surely be tremendous.

Arsonists in the streets of Pelogviosk-Kapitalen.

Treason in Pelogviosk!
The facts, the fiction and the action.

Last night, around 10:30 pm, a regular police patrol passing by the Revolutionary Monument in Freisyrfrivotstvo Square, Pelogviosk-Kapitalen, was attacked by a small gang of young adult males wielding a variety of makeshift weapons. The officers, PC Gyrovich and PC Flysia, were both knocked unconscious during the barbaric surprise attack, and were stuffed into the back of their patrol car, which was then set alight.
They were later rescued, but have suffered third degree burns and are currently in hospital.

A witness called the police but by the time armed officers arrived on the scene, more youths had arrived, chanting anti-Imperial slogans and setting fire to cars parked in the square. Two policemen received severe burns after a petrol bomb was dropped from a window overlooking the square.
The numbers of the protesters, referred to by the police as 'unpatriotic separatists', swelled from a few dozen to over a thousand over the next two hours.

Militia Units and Riot Police were swiftly dispatched to the area and began the slow process of rounding up the protestors. The skinheads did not take kindly to being penned in, and there were four incidents where militiamen and police officers were injured by knives and fire-arms. These incidents, and the earlier ones too, did little to change the fate of the protesters, and by 5 am, over 2,000 people had been arrested. Many are still waiting to be properly interrogated and detained in long lines outside numerous Police Stations in the city center. It is expected that under current Imperial law, the rioters will very likely be put to death for treason (defined by the Kolinthanese Constitution as: "Disturbance of the peace, or unauthorized disclosure and spreading of sensitive information, with intent to damage, discredit or in any way destabilize the Sovereign or the State.").

The Empress has yet to make a comment on the night's events, but will be no doubt be there to witness the trial and eventual execution of the traitors. Her silence on the matter is understandable, as the relationship between the Crown and the Pelogviosk province as a whole has been icy at best. Though it was host to the third largest branch of the Liberation Army during the revolution, as well as numerous other rebel groups, it's former role as a major coastal province meant that the retreating Khornerans made sure to thoroughly desolate the region before withdrawing across the border, and it has yet to recover from the destruction. 80% of infrastructure was severely damaged or destroyed, and just under a quarter of the region's population was massacred by the oppressors as a last show of strength.

Attempts to improve the quality of life were hampered by the massive food crisis following the Revolution, as what little fertile land the survivors of the war possessed had to be used to feed not just the Vioskites, but people all over the fledgling empire. Then came the rule of Empress Viola, which at last brought stability and basic aid to the region, but utterly failed to rebuild it. The Emperor Chalynski tried his best to remedy this, but the small and unmotivated workforce made it difficult to make any real progress. The Decade of Industry was not much more than a headline in Pelogviosk, and the province to this day is famous for it's abnormally high crime rate.

Her Imperial Majesty has made some progressive decisions, such as stationing a large portion of the Imperial Navy at the port in Pelogviosk-Kapitalen, and moving the headquarters of the Advisory Office of Tourism to the second largest city, Yzylamorygana. These changes have brought thousands of people to the Province, which will hopefully allow it to begin the slow and painful process of moving on from the horrors of Orthodox tyranny.

Special forces storm the embassy.

North African Embassy closed by force due to recent crisis.

This morning, residents at Tyrakotte Row, Lacrima, were rudely awakened as four Imperial Special Guard vehicles rumbled down the street, which is primarily populated by foreigners and home to the various embassies of international governments.
32 Imperial Knights spilled out of the vehicles and stormed the embassy. All 8 of the security staff were killed and the ambassador and his wife were arrested. The Embassy staff were taken in for questioning but have now been released.

All of this happened in the space of ten minutes.
This comes after the North African diplomatic staff were ordered to vacate the embassy at the beginning of the ongoing Tebekistan Crisis. Though reports that have been released by the ISG suggest that the ambassador was preparing for departure, the authorities were unsatisfied with his slow action and the lack of encouragement by the North African government.

The Ambassador and his family were presumably taken to the Imperial Exterior Intelligence Service headquarters in Ylgo for further questioning, though it is unknown what will happen to them.

Both the Empress and the President of the UAR have yet to make formal statements on the raid.

The Birth of Democracy or the Death of Freedom?
The Peninsular People's Assembly Takes Bold Action

By Yuli Tsaplin | 7 February 2015, 00:00 NST

On the surface, it appears to be a no-brainer.
Image
Green indicates democratic city-provinces, dark red indicates non-democratic provinces

After all, democracy was inextricably linked to the Marxism of the Seven Associates, and even Linsk himself professed that "Communism without democracy is like chocolate without cocoa." Marxism is rooted in the empowerment of the proletariat, and what better way to accomplish such a feat than through democratic systems of government?

However the issue runs deeper than that. The Revolutionary Union of Nerotysia is called a Union for good reason - it is not remotely a unitary state, rather it is a confederation of smaller states called City-Provinces, each ruled by its own autonomous Communist party. Many of these parties became democratic without any outside pressure, usually because of popular unrest that surfaced after Nerotysian standards of living began to rise. However still there are quite a few Provincial Parties who are anything but democratic - these stubborn authoritarians tend to be focused along the mountainous parts of the peninsula, where populations are tiny and economic development lags.

The question of whether the Nerotysian Peninsular Communist Party should force its constituents to become democratic is very contentious, as the Seven Associates who framed the Nerotysian Constitution were not only democracy-lovers, they despised the idea of a powerful central government. Written in the Declaration of the United Party are numerous clauses that explicitly forbid the central party from infringing on the rights of the provincial parties. And these rights are scattered throughout the Declaration like ants - unobtrusive but impossibly numerous.

Thus, the issue becomes entrenched in thorny contention. For decades the debate has raged, and the NPCP has remained immobile, paralyzed by those who say that forcing democracy on the provincial parties would be a gross abuse of power. While enforcing democracy is not forbidden in the Constitution, any regulation of the provincial parties is strongly warned against.

After reading all of this, the news from Thursday may come as a shock. In an unprecedented move, the Peninsular People's Assembly has passed the Tally Act (ujemajo akt), which will force all provincial parties to democratically elect party officials. Proponents declare a victory for democracy while critics weep for the death of freedom, but regardless the act has swept through the Supreme Secretariat and the corresponding lower bodies, and implementation is arriving far quicker than expected.

Vladimir Artyuschenko is the autocrat that rules Yasko, which is by far the most prosperous and most important of the non-democratic party. He is often called the "quiet tiger," for though he has maintained a decades-long death grip on power in Yasko, he rarely takes an aggressive stance in the Assembly. The debates over enforced democracy is the only time he openly shows his fangs - in one instance in 1983 he went so far as to threaten pro-democracy Delegates with blackmail if they didn't abandon their crusade. He serves as both the First Secretary of the Yaskite Communist Party's Central Committee and as one of the party's Delegates to the People's Assembly. He had this to say after the law was passed;

"This law is nothing more than the first step to a tyranny of the central party. Prazdnikov is a power-hungry lunatic who only serves his own ambition, and Rusakova is a deluded capitalist autocrat thinly disguised as a Marxist. It doesn't surprise me that these two have joined forces to destroy the provincial parties."

The day after the law was passed, a Shynski Delegate was found dead in his home. He had been a staunch ally of Rusakova, and autopsies later revealed the cause of death to be poison. Rusakova has failed to make a statement, however protests have erupted in the streets of Shynsk, united under the slogan "Down with the Tiger and Down with the Fascists!"

The citizens actually affected by the Act are divided in opinion, however Artyuschenko has promised that he will not rest until the law is repealed.

Peninsular Rebel Government attempt to establish anti-Imperial axis
Holy Imperial government condemns attempt to undermine the Holy Khorneran Empire

By; Amadeus, L.M.Z. 14 February.

"Despicable and heretical.", this is what Prime Minister Ravus had to say about Peninsular attempts to undermine Imperial authority. Earlier today, the Peninsular Rebel Government (PRG) has issued an invitation to foreign governments to meet in Shynsk to form an axis of evil against the Holy Khorneran Empire. Apart from foreign governments, rebel leadership from other rebellious dominions will also be present. This 'Congress of Shynsk' is a deliberate provocation in response to rising tensions between the Holy Khorneran Empire and the rebellious Peninsular dominion. Recently, already poor relations between the Holy Empire and the rebel government have been deteriorating due to Peninsular aggression. Later today, the Estate Nobilite will vote on an official recommendation to His Imperial Highness (Long may he reign!).

The Estate seems to be strongly divided. While all condemn the Peninsular initiative, opinions are divided on the appropriate response. The Right Honorable Duke Victor Alabaster Quinn, leader of the Librician faction in the Estate, has even called for military action. "These actions are clearly yet another sign that we are not taken seriously as a nation. It is time to retake our dominions and purge them of these traitors.", Duke Quinn has said in a short interview with the Imperial Chronicle. They will propose a bill which formally issues a reccomendation to the Imperial government to 'launch a military offensive'. However, with the Libricians still being in the minority, the bill is not expected to attract much support from more 'soft' members of the Estate.

It is clear however that the Estate Nobilite will not sit idly and will recommend a tough stance on recent provocations. A proposal for severe sanctions are expected. As well as a bill which urges the Imperial government to cut all diplomatic ties with any nation which expresses support for this 'Congress'.

A Throne Envoy of His Imperial Highness (Long may he reign!) is expected to appear at the 'Congress of Shynsk' to relay the formal position of His Imperial Highness (Long may he reign!) to the PRG and the delegations present.

The missile, determined to be a SA-7, is in use by the R.P.A. The attack comes just days after a car bomb was set off in Shybiks, killing 20 and injuring 67, Spodystani officals have launched an investigation into the shootdown, Spodystan has long disliked it's southern neighbor due to Pyrzykistan's strong anti socialist policy's. Acting President Nassar following the military coup

President Jasra Rashid ousted from power

Rabat, United Arab Republics: President Jasra Rashid was removed from power following a successful military coup by General Mahmoud Nassar, who has named himself acting head of state until official elections are held next month. Following the president's ousting from power General Nassar, had only one thing to say "President Rashid was found guilty of corruption, and human rights abuse against the people of the Islamic Republic. The people has called upon the military to remove this tyrant from power, and restore order to the United Arab Republics of North African Empire. She will be kept under house arrest at her residence in downtown Rabat, until further notice from my government, or if additional charges are brought against her. We thank our international allies for their cooperation on this internal matter, but most of all to the brave people of this wonderful nation.". According to our inside sources the former president was escort from the Presidential Palace to her residence, which is located just outside Rabat city limits to serve out her house arrest. This bold move by the United Arab Armed Forces is following the ongoing battle in the Tebek city of Garza, which shows no sign up letting up at this time. We as of yet to receive official word from the Nassar Government of all the officials removed from power, but it is assumed that Prime Minister Amare Mensah was also taking into custody by the military.

How will this move affect the ongoing war in Tebekistan? One is left to assume the outcome of this particular move by the armed forces, or even if the UAR's allies will respond with a positive outlook. President Nassar is expected to travel to New Spanishland soon to work out a peace agreement, with Tebek officials to hopefully bring back North African troops from the front line.

Royal North African troops march into Al-Shirta

Royal North African Armed Forces take control of northern Minoo Island

Al-Shirta, Minoo Island: The northern part of Minoo Island is in a state of chaos following intense fighting between the Royal North African Armed Forces, and the United Arab Liberation Armed Forces for control of the island. Following the outbreak of fighting General Secretary Ali Nasir Muhammad issued a order for the military to replace the civilian government, until the chaos subsides or the rebels are defeated. The Liberation Intelligence Department has of yet to determine, or discover who controls the Royal North African Forces, but is rumored to have the names of several high ranking members. Early in the fighting the rebels manage to throw the Muhammad Government off guard, and capture a large amount of territory before the United Arab Liberation Armed Forces(UALAF) stop them cool near the border of Nerotysian controlled South Minoo Island.

This new threat only adds to the growing instability in the region, which was once the Union of Eastern Escari Republics(UEER) leaving top ranking officers of the United Arab Liberation Armed Forces scratching their heads. General Secretary Muhammad released a press statement this morning announcing that the North African Armed Forces are ready to face this threat head on, and with the support of their allies in the Escari Communist Union they will defeat the rebels. Citizens in and around areas of heavy fighting has begin fleeing for more stabled territory, but many of them get caught in the cross fire.

Imperial main battle tank with two Spanish vehicles. Photograph provided by the Imperial Military Records Organization.

Joint exercises with New Spanishland just north of Khorneran border
Operation Iron Snowflake "A great success!"

This weekend, the Imperial Army and the Army of New Spanishland began their first ever joint training exercise "Operation Iron Snowflake." The units that officially participated were the Kolinthanese 4th Tank Division, and the New Spanish 2nd Armoured Division, though only the armoured and mechanized battalions from these divisions actually took part in the bulk of the exercise.
The exercise was focused on improving teamwork and ease of cooperation between the two ground forces, and also training the Spanish crews in arctic combat and cold weather vehicle operation, capabilities which they, in their tropical, mountainous homeland, are obviously lacking.

The scenario for the exercise was the takeover of a small, northern nation (represented by the borders of Kolintha's Sarnya province) by a larger power. Hence, the main exercise was preceded by a mock amphibious landing by Imperial marines to make way for the transportation of armoured vehicles into Kolintha.
The units then had to sweep across the country and expel the 'invaders.'

Miscommunication the week before this exercise resulted in several hundred thousand complaints as a music festival being held just outside the provincial capital was interrupted by a columns of tanks firing blank rounds storming through the area.

Despite several minor incidents such as this, the two armies apparently maintained a 'high standard of professionalism' and completed their objectives 7 hours earlier than was expected. The Imperial Army has issued 25 "Honourable Conduct" auxiliary medals to members of the New Spanishland Armed Forces for outstanding performance during the event.

A similar training exercise, Operation Iron Petal, will take place in New Spanishland in June, and 10,000 Spanish soldiers will be attending an arctic warfare course in Izlaya around the same time.

Zammoran-Khorneran Accord signed
Holy Imperial Army given autorisation to excercise force on Zammoran soil

By; Dorus, M.C.R. 7 April.

KHORNERA, ACHERON For some time it seemed inevitable, further military cooperation between Zammora and Khornera. Today, an accord has finally materialized between the two states. Delegates from both parties met in the Imperial Palace where they formalized the agreements negotiated earlier. Under the provisions in the accord, the Holy Imperial Army is allowed to enforce military law in certain areas in Zammora. Primarily, industrial areas and mining areas currently producing for the Holy Khorneran Empire are affected. Minister for Diplomacy, Lord Acevtus, has expressed his enthusiasm over the agreement, stating that "..this accord would allow the Empire to better defend both it's interests and it's allies."

The mountain country of Zammora, has been one of the Holy Empire's larger foreign suppliers of iron and other raw resources. Under the accord the Holy Imperial Army is allowed to provide security for various resources on which the Holy Khorneran Empire depends. The Ministry of War intends to deploy the first military units to Zammora in the coming week, although they are yet to release details. Military analysts expect up to 15,000 soldiers and logistical personel to be deployed in the following two months.

The accord is not without it's opponents though. Especially in Zammora criticism is fierce. "We are prostituting ourselves." says an anonymous official in the Zammoran civil service whom is considering resigning as an act of protest. Recent weeks alternative media in Zammora has paid much attention to the negotiations preceding the accord, worrying over an alledged 'attack on Zammoran sovereignty'. The Zammoran government issued a one-time declaration in which it stated that "...the provisions under the Zammoran-Khorneran accord serve to strenghten our alliance with our northern neighbour while also outsourcing the issue of national defense.. (...) ..we must acknowledge that the Holy Khorneran Empire is simply better equipped than our own military to provide protection.. (...) Imperial troops on our soil will act as a powerful detterent to hostile powers." So far the Zammoran government has refused to comment further, stating that they stand by their former declaration.

Troops of the United Arabic Liberation Army's 34th Infantry Division in Aldahn

North African forces aid Aldahni Communist rebels

Rabat, North African Empire: Today General Secretary Ali Nasir Muhammad announced that the United Arab Liberation Armed Forces will be joining Communist Aldahni rebels, who currently seeks to overthrow the government of King Abd-al-Hakim Ba on the battlefield in southern Aldahn. This announcement has yet to spark international attention within the region of Escar, but only one can image what kind of response the Muhammad Government will be receiving once the word gets out. According to reports we received this morning the 34th Infantry, and 144th Armored Divisions has entered Aldahni territory to link up with the rebels. General Secretary Muhammad also released a press note, which he was quoted in saying the following "The citizens of Aldahn have made their disagreements, with King Ba public and now he must either go peaceful, or risk a full armed uprising against his government. The leaders of the Liberation Army has requested North African aid, and support on their noble quest to rid Aldahn of the king's corrupted laws. I have already green lite the 34 Infantry, and the 144th Armored Divisions deployment to Aldahn it will be only a matter of time, before we either see the king go, or be overthrow by his own people."

The recent deployment of North African forces to Aldahn has caused the Royal North African Armed Forces to step up their attacks on Minoo Island, which is still an ongoing warzone between the two factions. The invasion of Aldahn by the United Socialist Republics(USR) has now, become the second official international conflict the Kingdom has took part in since the First Aldahni Civil War of 1991. Many civilians in both the Kingdom of Aldahn, and the United Socialist Republics re-guards this military attack as the first official conflict, between the two nations since the breakup of the Union of Eastern Escari Republics(UEER). The Kingdom has yet to response to North African troops crossing it's borders, but only one could think that a response will be arriving shortly in terms of full blown war.

Empress Valhyldra makes her emergency address.

Empress pledges support for Aldahn
Kolintha off to war once more?

Today, the North African General Secretary made the shocking declaration that the United Socialist Republics will provide direct military aid to a socialist-aligned terrorist movement in southern Aldahn. The government of the Kingdom of Aldahn has yet to make a formal comment, but Her Imperial Majesty was quick to offer support in her emergency address mere hours after the General Secretary made his announcement.

"Two North African divisions have already reportedly breached the Aldahni border, and it is obvious that if we do not do something to protect our ally from being swallowed up by foreign aggression - and I mean true foreign aggression, not the empty excuse that our socialist friends love to fling around - Aldahn will surely fall to communism." said the Monarch, wearing the stern yet calm mask of professionalism she is so well known for, "I, as a representative of the noble Empire and honourable people of Kolintha, offer direct military assistance to the Kingdom of Aldahn, for the duration of this crisis."

Already, the military has kicked into action, and it is expected that it's response will be of a similar pattern to that employed in the Tebek crisis, but much more substantial. The Empire is duty-bound to guard it's economic and political partners. Whilst Tebekistan was a war for justice, this will likely be a war for the economic future of the Empire itself and could well determine whether or not the entirety of the central Thalassic, the busiest, most crucial of Escar's three main oceans, is consumed by the socialist menace.

There is no doubt of course that the Empire will be victorious in this war - but it will take bravery and determination, as well as diamond-hard loyalty to your Fatherland! On behalf of the War Office, we urge all of our militia-qualified, fit for service readers to contact their nearest KAF recruitment centre and enlist. Remember, you can only be rewarded for your service to the Fatherland if you choose to serve it in it's time of need!

Tebek Troops along the Aldahni border

Tebek Armed Forces placed on full alert

Ragi, Tebekistan: Since the outbreak of the Aldahni Civil Dispute against King Ba's Government the Islamic Republic is now on the edge of mental break, with North African forces entering Aldahn to aid the rebels only one can wonder if they will stop there. In response to the conflict Supreme Prophet Dayo Gueye has placed the Islamic Armed Forces of Tebekistan(IAFT) on full alert, but has announced that no Tebek troops will be entering Aldahni territory. According to some of the rumors circling throughout the Islamic Republic is, that the United Socialist Republics seeks to restore the Union of Eastern Escari Republics(UEER) in it's image. Supreme Prophet Dayo Gueye also released a press statement in, which she was quoted in saying the following: "This ongoing aggression by the United Socialist Republics(USR) has to stop, before our whole area falls to Socialism. The Islamic Republic of Tebekistan hereby declares it's official support to the Aldahni Government, however no Tebek forces will be deployed to Aldahn to assist in the fighting. Our job is here making sure that our own borders are secure from North African aggression, but we welcome the Aldahni Coalition to use some our eastern airbases for Humanitarian Aid. In response to the North African invasion of southern Aldahn I have place our armed forces on full alert, but our troops will remain on our side of the border."

The outbreak of the conflict in Aldahn has concerned many Tebeks living along the border area, between the two countries leaving them to wonder about the possible outcome if the rebels win the war. Troops of the Islamic Army's Eastern Command has already begin to remove several border villages to a safe location, while using their homes as a forward operations base in watching the Aldahni Conflict. One displace villager managed to speak out against the Gueye Government, and was quoted in saying the following in a interview. "I can not believe how fast the troops entered my village, with their weapons and equipment to order us out of our homes to protect us from the conflict in Aldahn. I was having dinner with my wife, and two daughters when three soldiers started knocking on our door, with a Relocation Order requesting our to meet on the outskirts of the village for evac to a safe location. Once we finished our dinner we pack up to start for the evac site, and as we walk my wife noticed Tebek troops setting up defensive positions all around our village. We did not know what was going on at the time we left for our new home, but once we reached our location we discovered why we were ordered out of our home. It seems that Supreme Gueye is concerned in the ongoing conflict in Aldahn, and is worried that the Communist rebels may try to cross into our borders."

In Other News

New Zuborn Democractic Protests resume

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the goverment's recent transformation into an imperial communist one-party no elections state turned supporters of the party against it, Ryan Heil has decided to speak on the matter. The Times interviewed him and here is the transcript for the interview.
"So, Emperor, let's cut to the chase." "Mhm." "How are you reacting to the recent protests in Talva?" "I have little care for this. The people will adjust to the change soon. I mean, they agree with my policies and enactments, so why would they be protesting the criminalization of elections and democracy? I don't quite understand." "That is a very good point, sir Emperor, but let me play Devil's Advocate. What if, persay, not saying I don't, What if you wanted a democratic system in New Zuborn? What if you are a citizen of New Zuborn and you don't want to voice your opinions on government and the system?" "I'm not suppressing free speech, if that's what you're asking." "Ah, I see." "This interview has started to be a waste of my time. I want you and your crew gone. I muss discuss matters with my minister of defence. Mmmm..*ahem*. You may leave now."
That was all the information we gathered from Ryan Heil, Emperor of New Zuborn. It seems you can still voice your opinion on the matters of the government, so the people protesting in the streets of Talva have a reason to stop now. But they do have a reason to continue. As the Emperor has made clear, elections shall no longer be continuing. The strange comment from the Emperor about his minister of defence is causing rumours of a possible relationship between the two, but those have not been confirmed yet.

What a bastard. No elections? Might as well move out now.

President España: "Tensions increase as well as our concern"

Saturday April 11, 2015

New Horizon. Today, the President of the Federal Republic, Manuel España called a press conference at the Great Hall of the Federal Government Palace to communicate his position on the violent events that occurred south of the continent between the United Arab Liberation Armed Forces, the Royal North African Armed Forces and the Aldahni Army. The president said he was "very worried, especially for civil and political landscape of the area", also cataloged as "Improper and shortly diplomatic" the intervention by the government of General Secretary Ali Nasir Muhammad, "I have absolutely nothing against the General Secretary Muhammad or his administration, just give my opinion as a person first, and then as president, but it seems inadequate the intervention and support for paramilitary movements that are under the jurisdiction of a foreign government that will know how to handle their internal situation, the General Secretary Muhammad and I are good friends and he knows it, before this whole situation we were talking about the constitution of the Eastern Escari Treaty Organization and I showed very happy about an whole international community that would encourage economic, cultural and foregin cooperation, so I say to the General Secretary to please avoid promote a fight over something trivial and vain as political discrepancies, I tell you honestly and not as president but as a simple human being". España also reminded the Government of the USR is still on current peace talks in New Horizon with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Tebekistan since these are "Vital for the resolution of all differences and understanding of governments in Estern Escar".

Violence Erupts in Yasko

By Yuli Tsaplin | 12 April 2015, 00:00 NST

Image
Protesters face off with riot police in downtown Yasko

The past few days have seen the mighty city of Yasko grind to a halt, as tension threatens to boil over in the troubled province.

It started with a bang on Monday - tear gas and beanbag guns tore into a small peaceful group of protestors in the city center. They had been demanding Artyuschenko's resignation for weeks since the passage of the Tally Act, however they failed to inspire the majority of Yaskites until that Monday morning. By the nighttime, their ranks had swelled to over 10,000, and protests continued into the work week.

Things took a turn for the worse when protesters grew unruly late Thursday night, threatening to spill over the low wall surrounding the party headquarters in central Yasko. A cascade of tear gas failed to dissuade them, and so police resorted to deadly force for the first time, killing 12 and injuring more than 200. Outrage spread through the streets like a virus, culminating with Saturday's nightmare.

Over 1 million people on the streets, chanting, yelling, throwing eggs at police barricades. The city was paralyzed, the roads rendered useless. Yasko is an important rail center, and consequently the rails have run at a sluggish pace throughout the nation this weekend. Government offices have been burned down, ricks and debris tossed at those which are guarded. The party headquarters resembled a military installation, with rows of barbed wire and heavily-armed police swarming the surrounding gardens. Clashes have been short and brutal; casualties have reached into the hundreds as police resort to deadly violence.

Their anger is focused almost exclusively at a single individual; the famous quiet tiger, Vladimir Artyuschenko. Despite the passage of the Tally Act in early February, requiring all provincial parties to implement democratic elections for party officials, Artyuschenko and many others have simply refused to abide by its mandate. The Tally Act allows a full year for the provincial parties to institute their elections, however it seems the citizens of Yasko don't want to wait and see.

The violence has prompted protests in other cities, particularly Shynsk, where citizens surrounded the Palace of the Revolution to demand that the central party intervene. However, the party's hands are tied; currently there is no legal basis for Artyuschenko to be prosecuted. Certain members of the Central Committee are pushing to sue for abuse of the people's rights, however as of yet nothing has been filed with the Central Control Commission.

Artyuschenko's desperate grip on power has led even his staunchest supporters to tone down their rhetoric. Dmitri Laskoy, once a ferocious opponent of the Tally Act and close friends with Artyuschenko, recently tweeted "Here's hoping my friend will do what is right, for the sake of peace and the people." Boris Arshunev has remained deafeningly silent, distancing himself from his earlier support of Artyuschenko.

In a way Artyuschenko is only the head of a winding snake. Almost two dozen provincial parties have refused to follow the Tally Act and are facing unrest of their own; Yasko's violence is exacerbated because of the city's unique size and wealth when compared with the other totalitarians.

In any case, there is little doubt about one thing: Artyuschenko and the like have only a year to act on this issue. Once the Tally Act's alloted one-year period runs out, the Central Committee will have a definite cause to prosecute these leaders, and if they refuse to step down the military is legally obliged to remove them by force. One wonders how they can possibly turn the situation around as public opinion swings rapidly against them, but many fear that they will not go without a fight.

The protesters in Yasko have promised they will not stop until Artyuschenko steps down. An uneasy truce seems to have settled between the police and the protesters, but the threat of violence and death hangs heavy in the air.

Local militiamen carry injured guardsman to safety.

An Enemy within! Rebels attack Royal Children!
Trouble is brewing in Pelogviosk.

Yesterday, at 3 o'clock Zephyrus Central Time, an Imperial convoy, carrying the Prince Iabiron and his sister, Crown Princess Katyanka, was ambushed by masked men with weapons presumed to be Spodystani in origin as the Imperial children briefly passed through the Pelogviosk province on their way home from an event in Gyrmos.

Well over fifty men burst from the trees at either side of the state-owned road, firing assault rifles. Two Sovereign guardsmen, both manning the exposed roof armaments of their vehicles, were injured. Thankfully, no harm came to any other person in the convoy, including the royals.
The assailants were dispatched in a matter of seconds by swift and precise fire from the brave Guardsmen. The Vioskite militia arrived on the scene a few minutes to evacuate the injured men and transport the Prince and Princess home via air.

However, although the impact of this minor attack was minor, it is not the first, and it shows clearly that the recent tensions in the Pelogviosk province have nearly reached a fever pitch. While of course the authorities will no doubt handle further incidents with the same efficiency as this one and the previous riots, citizens across the Empire cannot help but feel concern and fear in such dark times.

"It's disgusting that such unpatriotic people exist." we were told by Mikel Rauzhya, a resident of Kostar, a small village close to where the attack happened.
"I pray that our boys in blue will be able to root out the cause of this disease."

The Empress has condemned the attacks and personally cancelled several functions in southern this morning. We managed to interview her following her morning address.
"Barbaric, that's what I call these people. Attack me? Go ahead fool, many have tried and died in the process. But what on earth gives these scum the right to lash out at CHILDREN? It is utterly horrendous, and there is a high likelyhood that soon, the soldiers of the Empire will be forced to root out this cancer before it spreads."

Neither the Prince or the Crown Princess have been publicly seen since and where hence not available for comment.

Biennial Def-con in Insomnus
Escar's premier convention on military technology and equipment began today. Here are the highlights.

By; Alexus, C. 27th of April.

The guest speakers: To catch a glimpse of decorated generals in their uniforms is an enviable prospect for any military nut. From Commandant Malik of the Cooperation Marine Corps to a short opening speech by Vect Arms chairman Sion Vect himself, the convention sported an impressive host of speakers from all sides. Especially noteworthy was Vect's introduction, which contained more than just his costumary anti-communist rhetoric. His short exposition on the changing nature of warfare and the increasing role of the private sector was refreshing to say the least, despite it's clearly biased viewpoints.

The Argent series: Vect Arms has once again silenced it's critics with the new Argent series of assault weapons. Learning from the lessons of the Sliver series, Vect Arms has once again improved upon it's older creations to create something even more elegant. The demonstrations perfectly illustrated the Argent's precision and sheer stopping power, which had become the trademark of Vect weaponry. More on the Argent series in a seperate article.

The UAVs: Sadly even the massive conference building was not capable of allowing a practical demonstration of the Air Force's new Manticore-12 unmanned weapon system. Or, for our own safety, it was perhaps for the best. Because if the Department of Defense is to believed, this drone is a mean killing machine. While the exact weapon specifications were still classified, one of these unmanned monsters was displayed proudly, albeit without its arnaments.

The exosuits: "The future is today", with that uninspired slogan Techtonis presented it's first exosuit with military applications. Fortunately the presentation was a lot more interesting than the slogan. While apparently still in very initial phases, the demonstration aptly showed where this technology might go. The drastic increase in strenght this suit provides has massive potential, although the demonstration lacked the thunder and sheer excitement many were hoping.

The new scopes: Admittedly, at first glance a new scope for an assault rifle is not as exciting as UAV's that can take out communist from the sky, but after witnessing it for ourselves we were really convinced. A scope with an inbuilt camera linked directly to the visor attached to the soldier's helmet allows the soldier to shoot 'blindly' around corners while still being able to aim through the camera. The concept is simple enough, yet works surprisingly well. We won't be surprised to see more of these scopes soon.

The Argent series seems like a solid improvement. The Sliver's were nice and all but they required waaaay too much maintenance off the field.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

Comet City. The presidential candidate of the Conservative Party, Nicholas Stuart gave an exclusive interview to the New Horizon Post in the morning on Saturday.

Reporter: Thank you for the exclusive Mr. Stuart.
Stuart: Thanks to you guys for the opportunity.
Reporter: Well Mr. Stuart, What led you to run for presidential candidate this year?
Stuart: It was not an easy decision, as you know the Conservative Party has been gaining some popularity in the last few months, I thought it was the perfect present an alternative to the public at this time point.
Reporter: At present, the Democratic Pary maintains an overwhelming leadership over you on the polls, in a press conference you talk about the union between the Conservative Party, the Communist and Liberal Party but this never happened. You change of opinion?
Stuart: No, it was a matter of irreconcilable differences, liberal communists were demanding the "The nationalization of private property and complete civil liberty" that sounds like demagoguery and anarchy and in a state that promotes values and principles that can not exist, I not changed my view, they did it before me.
Reporter: Well. Let's talk about your campaign plan, wich is your travel route?
Stuart: It is important to always visit the large clusters of population, I will depart from Tuy through Baxual, Fenerez, Ordaz, New Horizon and finally Comet City.
Reporter: If you are the winner in the elections what are the plans for the country?
Stuart: Start with international relations, which most dislike of President España are the friends that have, such as the corrupt and authoritarian Empress Valhyldra Espargyr, I still not conceive the idea that a loving nation of freedom and civil rights it becomes ally of such a gloomy and dark country as Kolintha and other corrupt monarchies as Vonnen, I think New Spanishland deserves healthier diplomatic relations with democratic nations.
Reporter: Not many escari nations embrace democracy as a form of government Mr. Stuart.
Stuart:I prefer to ally with few rather than a lot of non-democratical nations.
Reporter: And in general what is your plan for New Spanishland?
Stuart: Regulate less the market, put more forceful regulations to certain audiovisual materials that eat away our family chorme and impose stricter rules to imnigrants, if they come to our country, is to work, not to party.
Reporter: Give a message for the readers of the newspaper, Mr. Stuart.
Stuart: Unity, I ask for Unity, we can still build a better nation for all of us, vote with the heart, with patriotism, Viva New Spanishland!.
Reporter: Thanks again Mr. Stuart.
Stuart: Thanks to you Billy.

Rioters face off against the Tyderius Riot Control Lower Division around 2 am

Report on the 2015 Tyderius Riots

Tyderius, Federal Republic of Futrellia: A protest started to raise awareness of government corruption and Military ignorance escalated into a full scale riot last night around 7:22 pm Tyderi Time. A movement of more than 6,000 people fed up with the apparent ignorance of the Federal government on the issue of passing laws, enforcing laws and overall representing the Futrellian people poorly to the other Escari nations took to destroying Police vehicles, bashing in business windows, setting several multi-story buildings aflame with workers still inside and setting fire to several Fire and EMS Emergency Response vehicles after Medics and Firefighters suffered various injurys from bricks, steel poles, and baseball bats.

Several squads of local Police Emergency Response Riot Control units were already on scene as the violence escalated, but could do little to stop it as they were severely outnumbered and already faced a strong resistance as stones, bricks, bottles, and baseball bats were thrown at the defending Riot squads. Within the first hour, several millions of Credits of Business infrastructure was completely destroyed as Riot Control Officers, Firefighters and EMS first responders were severely injured, some suffering concussions while others suffered broken jaws, arms, legs, and collarbones. At 12:02 am, the riot had spread from the entirety of the Commercial District to the Legal District as the numbers of rioters was reported to have grown by at least 3,000. As more and more officers were injured, more and more live rounds were used.

Once the entirety of the Riot Control Division and half of the Tyderius Police Department was on duty in the Commercial and Legal districts, Patrol officers began firing into the crowds, injuring dozens and killing 6 only in the first few minutes of the spread. Teargas, shockbatons, tazers, and smoke grenades were actively used to ensure firefighters could be given ample time to do their jobs as rioters openly targeted them as heard from one rioter that was arrested quoted saying "We wanted to watch the entire city burn uninterrupted." At around 5:52 am, over 1,082 rioters were arrested when the mobs of people finally began to quiet down and return to their homes as a force of 2,500 National Guardsmen arrived within the city from Autumn Base, the National Guard Headquarters located in North-East Futrellia. This end did not come without cost as 16 people were killed and more than 2,000 rioters, Police, Fire and EMS first responders were injured, ranging from minor cuts and scrapes to massive gashes to the head, abdomen, legs and arms, as well as concussions and broken bones. One TPD Lieutenant Markus Russell suffered massive internal bleeding after he was struck head on intentionally by an automobile operated by one of the protestors, Valis Antaon. Lieutenant Russell later died of his wounds after a two hour long operation by Whitecross Medical Hospital doctors and nurses to attempt to repair the multiple severed arteries. Lieutenant Russell is survived by his wife, Daina and his 2 year old daughter, Vallencia.

As brutal and gruesome as this riot was, it was not the first Tyderius has suffered through in the past. In 2013, as former President Francis Underwood was arrested and sentenced to life after stealing away billions of Credits from the Tax Services and crippling the entire Futrellian economy and Senator Tyvia Oskillate was being sworn in as the President of the new Federal Republic, doing away with Underwood's makeshift monarchy, over 22,000 citizens marched on the Embassy, Commercial, Luxury, and Governmental Districts, tearing through Police and National Guard forces, finally being stopped cold by Futrellian Army tanks along with a force of 3,000 soldiers at the front gates of the Underwood Manor, where President Underwood was arrested. 266 protestors and 22 Police officers were killed as well as leaving more than half of Tyderius on fire, smoking. The Commercial District construction crews were finishing up completing the Manson General Office Building, the last of the Commercial buildings destroyed in the 2013 Riots. For now, it appears that Sergeant Major of the National Guard Bryan Johnson, with the authorization of the President has ordered the entire Commercial District closed as clean-up crews and firefighters work around the clock to put out fires, clean up trash, and hastily repair damaged buildings, while tearing down the burned out ones. In response to this, the Chief Lavon Beall has ordered 85 additional officers be trained for the express purposes of heavily patrolling streets where the most numbers of protestors arrived from. For now, it appears Tyderius, the nation's capital, is once again in a state of emergency with the entire center for business activity shut off for repairs. Only time will tell if the people of Tyderius will survive the massive hit to the economy brought on by this needless, bloody, riot.

Overwhelmingly Gray

By Yuli Tsaplin | 7 May 2015, 00:00 NST

The nation of Vioska is overwhelmingly gray.

The violent northern storms which shake the nation to its bones are a dirty, pounding gray. The aggressively efficient architecture, adopted to maximize resource use and defensibility, is a drab concrete gray. The streets and the cars that ride atop them are gray. The faces of politicians are impeccably gray. The faces of people droop gray under the sun, which itself is often gray with smog and smoke.

This is as true for the capital city of Iasemberg as it is for the rest of the nation, but travel only a few miles outside of the city and there is another color, so bright and startling it seemed like a giant daycare had been dropped into the middle of a vast puddle. Creeping through the dense forests with our cameras, we could hardly believe our eyes.

Sky blue. Sky blue and egg white spotted the space behind the barbed-wire fence we found ourselves facing. It was raining that day, dampening the ground beneath us, and our shoes became stuck in the mud as we stood dumbfounded, unmoving. The chains of the fence laced the fateful colors with more of the ever-present gray, but the effect was not reduced in the slightest.

Rumours of brutal work camps in Vioska ring loud and clear throughout the communist bloc, and much of the world. In 1994 Vladimir Dhiutzov escaped to Nerotysia. He traveled through miles of Slovskan forest, braving ice and cold and the clutches of bears, fearing capture and torture at the hands of the Slovskan authorities, ever desperate for information about their shadowy neighbour. He made it to Ossia after months of harrowing travel, and one year later Roses and Rainstorms took the world by storm. Detailing the gruesome working conditions inside these camps, the novel was condemned by Vioskite authorities but nevertheless captured the attention of Escar. The camps were revealed to be ideological prisons, where fascists, capitalists, intellectuals and even reform-minded communists were sent for "re-conditioning," which mostly involved mining Vioska's rich coal deposits. The book, however, died without a peep. Just one year later the Grand Depression hit, and the once-furious capitalist powers turned their eyes inward. Nerotysian leaders, already looking for an excuse to ignore the situation in Vioska, embraced the death of the controversy with open arms.

It seemed that Vioska's facade had been breached. It seemed that the government might be so embarrased that they would trudge towards reform. It seemed that Dhiutzov had accomplished his mission.
But in 2005 there was a shakeup in Vioskite politics, largely due to the Depression and the humiliation of the scandal. The sharp cheekbones and deadly cunning of Persius Zhernobyl swept into power. And though he seemed to herald the coming of reform, the reality of life in the nation only took a violent turn for the worst.

We decided that it must be one of the work camps, and we were puzzled. Snapping pictures of the startlingly blue buildings inside the fence, we began to think that Zhernobyl had been lying. He hadn't been closing down the camps, he hadn't been cutting down on repression and torture and all of the other tactics regularly employed by the State Police. Zhernobyl had, in fact, made no changes at all. We decided he must have simply allowed the status quo to stand.

How wrong we were.

We returned the next week, armed with better cameras and a determination to learn more. There were figures off in the distance, being hustled in chains between buildings, but we could not imagine a way to contact them without the guards noticing. We knew that the Nerotysian ambassador would not help us - he was hostile to our investigation from the get-go. We were posing as embassy staff in order to fool the Vioskite government, and the ambassador only saw us as a diplomatic liability. No help would come from him.

We tried to whistle, hoping we would get lucky. We planned to break into the camp, but decided it would be too risky. We again appealed to the ambassador, in vain. We knew we needed something more, we could sense we were teetering on the edge of something big.

Zhernobyl is a curious man with a curious style of speaking. He speaks and acts rather like a Prince Charming, and often he wears quite tight-fitting uniforms. He played the noble progressive on the international stage, and he smiled modestly when asked if he considered himself a savior of his troubled country. "No," he would say, "I am only a servant."

But as we continued our sniffing in Iasemberg, stumped and looking for answers, we came across a rather distrubing anecdote.

Our embassy car had become stuck in a blinding blizzard, and we were taken in by a family of four living in a small townhouse on the outskirts of the city. Three little boys and one mother. We primarily dealt with the mother, the matriarch of the family, who resembled a PTSD pumpkin, with her world-weary wrinkles which wrapped around her face like rolls of duct tape. That night we sat down with her in her living room, where her entire family slept, and we began talking. We asked what had happened to her husband.

"Oh, he was taken years ago. I don't know which camp he works in, but they let him send me letters for his good behavior." We said it must be difficult, living without him.

"Oh, yes, yes. It was easier back when Zasha was still around, you know, because she was such a little trooper, always wanting to do this or that - she was a great help. And she looked so much like her mother..." her voice broke. Confused, we asked what was wrong.

"Nothing, nothing..." we pressed her, gently, aware that something big was rolling just beneath the surface, and we needed to tease it out with the utmost care...

Finally,

"She was taken only a few years ago." The mother sniffles, ashamed of her tears. "They - she - she is Kolish, you see. She was the daughter of a friend of mine, and when she passed away I took her in. She was so young then, she hardly remembered her real mother."

We waited while she reigned in her shaking.

"So...my friend was Kolish, and so was she, and I suppose they must have found out somehow. They came for her when she was twelve - said she - said she was not worthy of real work - said she..."

The woman could not continue through her tears. We left without finding out more. But the seed had been planted. We raised hell at the embassy, threatened to contact the Central Committee and reveal all of the subterfuge, the fact that the embassy routinely burned documents, the fact that they regularly lied on their reports to the Central Committee. So they buckled. They had no choice.

Zhernobyl is a marvelous wordsmith. He coined the name of the program, "Ethnic Housekeeping." He wrote every manual. He gave every private speech to the Vioskite People's Liberation Party. He personally developed the psuedoscience and rhetoric backing the program's implementation. He twisted the Grand Depression to suit his peculiar needs, pinning the blame on the most prosperous ethnic group in Vioska.

We returned to the camp in an armored convoy. We had failed to inform the government of our intentions, and we had cowed the guards at the gate in minutes. Before long we were finally inside the camp.
The buildings, so pretty from far away, were lined in rows stretching as far as the eye could see. They had no windows, and the doors were squares of iron dug into the ground. Black-suited guards stood nervously at attention as we rumbled down the road. They had no idea what was going on - no one was normally allowed in here.

We stopped a little ways down and went up to the first door, demanded that it be unlocked. In seconds it was. We crept inside.

The rancid scent of sweat and blood hung in the air, dancing with heat so intense it burned your eyes. The acrid taste of metal salted the tongue. Ragged, bruised bodies dotted the walls. Young men and boys, some girls too, all awake the instant we had opened the door, all staring fearfully at our tall figures. Some were alone. Others sat in clusters. In one corner, a young girl was being tended to by an older woman. We approached them. The girl's face was monstrous, distorted by purple-yellow bruises, streaked and crusted with dried blood. The older woman curled protectively over her.

"Please. She needs to recover. Take me, take someone else. Please." Her voice was oddly mechanical, a calculated attempt to salvage some mercy. She was clearly used to saying such things, to no avail.

Zhernobyl's writings are labyrinthine in their logic, but beautiful in their style. He writes extensively about the importance of Ethnic Housekeeping, about the importance of ensuring the survival of the Hadriak race, about the inferiority of the Kolish people. His writings dream of a day when all of Escar will be cleansed of the Kolish disease. He is expert at linking the Kolish people to the hated monarch that rules north of the border. He is a true wordsmith.

Throughout the day we explored the rest of the camp. Towards noon, when guards began to become twitchy and when news of our sniffing had surely reached the central government, we reached the very center of the camp. In a giant central square there stood two enormous buildings. Two smokestacks sprouted from both, each with thin tendrils of smoke rising lazily into the sky. They had been used very recently - this morning, probably.

By then each of us knew, or at least suspected, what we were about to find. But we entered anyway. At first, the inside seemed innocuous, only a large silver room, it's ceiling studded with showerheads. But moving further inwards we discovered what the guards called the 'Cookery.'

Piles upon piles of bodies are clumped in one corner. The room is stiflingly hot. Along the brick walls are arrayed two dozen large steel doors. As for what was behind the doors we needed only to guess.
We returned to the outside. We took the injured girl with us, promised the other prisoners we would return. We left, although the guards were sour about our extra baggage.

Her name is Zasha. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was raised by a family friend. They came for her when she was twelve, told her that people of her kind weren't worthy of work. She had at first been pushed into an even more putrid room, where every day hordes of people were taken away, never to return. One day, she was grouped in with the 'Goners.' However a guard noticed her physique. He held her back. Ever since then she had been imprisoned with the workers, though her work differed from theirs quite a bit. She was a toy to be passed around, as were some of the other women.

Zasha had birthed three children in her five years at the camp. All three were taken from her, to be adopted by pure Hadriak families. She had miscarried twice.

In the following hours we rescued her mother from the State Police. They had been punishing her for talking to us. Her face was like her daughters', decorated with bruises. One of her boys had already been shot. When she saw us again at the embassy she threw herself into our arms.

"Thank you for bringing my daughter back from death," she said. "Thank you for bringing all of us back."

The nation of Vioska is overwhelmingly gray. For Zasha this gray is forgotten life, while the blues and whites are well-remembered death.
