In Memoriam

There are times one looks back over the past year, to reflect on things that have changed, events that have happened, and what one hopes for the future.

A year ago today, we lost a great leader, a loving father, and an exceptional lover and companion. His shuttle disappeared off all scanners on a routine trip to Jewel in the outer systems. There has been no sign of either his return, or his assumed demise.

Devon Treznor was a man of many talents, not the least of which was his ability to turn a bad situation to his advantage. He had proven this time and again, from back before many of you even knew him escaping from what had been thought to be a foolproof assassination plan.

I should know just how good it was. I’m the one who planned it.

But, he escaped that somehow, just as he later escaped other attempts on his life. Some of this was due to his skills. Some, his friends and allies. Still others were pure dumb luck. The fact remains, he eluded death the way sand does through the fingers of a child at the beach. Time and again, he succeeded, thrived even, where others might fail.

He took a small kingdom and forged it into an empire, and all for the most unimaginable of reasons. He helped topple tyrants, and set up kings. He dared to meddle in the affairs of everyone he saw fit to, from the lowly, to those who dared proclaim godhood. He stared down overwhelming odds to bring one he loved out of darkness, spitting in the face of powers many would rightly cower before.

The man even had the balls and brains to keep me interested, engaged, even passionately in love with him, after I’d been convinced not to continue seeking his head on a platter. It was, how do they say about so many much more trivial relationships? Complicated. I doubt we’d have had it any other way.

He is a man worth remembering. While the year has seemingly gone forward without his subtle guidance from behind the scenes, with our son, Marcus, ascending the Treznor throne as he had trained him for, with peace and prosperity prevailing, as we have all hoped, and with the day to day life of most continuing on with little to no regard for our loss, we haven't forgotten him. Nor will we.

If nothing else, join me in raising a glass of scotch to a man who accomplished much, and regretted little. One who we miss, whether be it his company, his diplomacy, or his backside whom several I know, would dearly love to kick repeatedly. Every year on this date, until he comes back to prove us wrong, or time forgets us and all the reasons for it - a toast.

To Devon Treznor. May your glass be never empty, wherever you are.

[ooc: This is part of a long-running arc that goes back, ye gods, over a decade here on NS. It’s also a bit of a breadcrumb for something else running - the who for that will know it when they see it. As for anyone else, hell - if you knew him and have something to offer, feel free - this would be in the form of a blog-like post, or the like, possibly in many places, open to other posts and comments, with the sole purpose of remembrance. No need to post anything at all if you don’t want or care to - it’s all good here. Dammit Trez, you and going out with a bang. *shakes fist* Bastard. You’ll be missed.]
