Still, quite an experience. Just being in Guam must have been a blast; Micronesia is a fascinating area of the world. What kind of history do you specialize in?

It was. Cute girls, No snow to shovel, 87 all year round, what's not to like?

Well, mostly 20th Century stuff. I'm looking to get a degree in Air Power Studies/Military Aviation History if I end up going to USNA, USAFA, or Embry Riddle. Serving my time, and then figuring out what I'll do next.

Just my luck; I'm a connoisseur of 20th century history myself, if you can call it that. We should do some RP centered around our mutual interests, or discuss it in more depth sometime. Until then, I wish you the best of luck with your studies, and I thank you for your intention to serve our country, or at the very least your appreciation for those who do :)

May I ask what y'all were digging up?

The short of it, anything and everything :P ... Well, we've spent most of our time doing excavations at Dundurn Castle, (cue my shameless promotion of Hamilton) as they've been planning on extending their driveway, and making alterations to their parking lot. This past week I've also been out working on a site in Hamilton down near the West Harbour, in Eastwood Park (I'm not expecting you to know where this is :P ) for a new sewer extension. Both sites are hugely different. Dundurn Castle is a historic site, and therefore we expect to find things around there, with everything from First Nations' sites to the late 19th century. Eastwood Park had a few buildings within the area in the 1850's, including a brewery, but all of this was leveled and used as a landfill till at least the 1950s. It was turned into a park in the 60's or 70's.

We've found projectile points (arrowheads), and lots of evidence for flintknapping at Dundurn Castle. We also get some interesting War of 1812 artifacts at Dundurn. Actually one of the surprising and recent finds we had was a coin from 1775. It's surprising, since we didn't think anyone had been using the land by 1775. Most of the European finds are pieces of ceramic plates and crockery, window glass, bottle glass, nails, the occasional buttons, and the odd leftover animal bones from someone's meal.

On the other hand, digging a known garbage dump is... interesting. Surprisingly it isn't that bad at first, since most of what was thrown out was either empty bottles and other containers, or broken dishes in thick layers of coal ash. The problem is that we think that parts of the site may have been used for a sewage plant at one time, so in some areas we get a lot of not so nice water and muck near the watertable level.

My expertise is Southern Ontario Archaeology, roughly spanning the Archaic Period (10,000 BC) to 19th Century. As a history enthusiast I also have an interest in the early 20th Century. My other area of expertise is Classical Roman Archaeology (Julius Caesar - Constantine), and I have had the opportunity to dig in Italy for a month and a bit, which was an amazing experience that I'd love to do again. Why do I not do this? Because the only jobs that someone in North America can get in archaeology is in North America. Unless you plan on paying to dig! ;)

If anyone is really interested in wanting to know more, let me know. I am a huge supporter of public education on archaeology, but I also don't want to clutter the thread (or bore anyone ;) )

Have you got any plans to move closer anytime soon?

Anyone here see The Last Ship?

Yes, I am aware it's a massive USN recruiting commercial that's horribly cheesy at the same time, but would anyone be up for an RP like it?

Navy vessels turned to being Pirates, Wars for the Vaccine, total collapse of society except in the few Greenzones that have appeared (along the OS West Coast and in the OS Pacific Commonwealths, in Tasmania, New Zealand, Hainan Island, Okinawa, Japan, and Eastern Russia).

You know I've only seen the commercials but I'm seriously considering watching it myself; I do love some naval action myself.

So indeed; I'd support something like that.

I did have that one Far-Cry inspired RP all planned out a few months ago, with a map and everything. Essentially a dictatorial state in the Himalayas surviving off of the illicit diamond and opium trade, in which we have to intervene to save some ethnic minority or stop the flow of narcotics (maybe tie it in with major international smuggling rings harbored by the regime, or a hostage/heist crisis connecting them to us). The trick is, this is a heavily isolated nation with a very mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure. A successful invasion would rely far more on living resourcefully (probably off the land) and operating very strategically with a small number of highly trained troops. No massive tank spawns or skies blotted out with bombers. Just a few thousand men and women basically left to take down a regime on their own.

Naval action or not, this movie was very poorly made technically (shooting helicopters with 152mm autocannon meant for ASuW).

Both are very interesting RP's, but yes the "Last Ship" on TNT isn't very good. But OS's Rp sounds great!

I am for this.

The Carlossian Navy operates around 100 individual Oceanic Defence Platforms dotted around the Carlossian coast. Cutting them off from supplies on the mainland would make for some very interesting roleplay indeed.

There are a few that could be revived. Wasn't there a wedding and a joint military college RP?

There was also a Crisis Situation in Wagondia, and our not so serious L.I.B.E.R.A.T.E. threads as well.... I'm willing to bring back either given enough interest. :)

Y U Hate on Last Ship! :( ... so what if it isn't realistic, it's fun! :) ... and I agree that OS's RP idea sounds great :)

Also, for you RP-deprived masses, I do this Aviran's gala deserves a look. It's the perfect way to promote the IFC and also have our leaders get to know each other in a casual setting. And by making it a charity gala, with an auction feature, there is constant entertainment and interesting things being sold. Not like the typical open-ended gala that becomes boring and pointless very quickly.
