The Philippines was once a set of city-states colonized by the Kingdom of Spain in the sixteenth century, and was a colony of the United States of America after the Spanish-American war in 1898. The US government then gave Philippines a 10-year transition period known as the Commonwealth, however it was interrupted by the Japanese rule during the Second World War and ruled by a puppet government. Since then the US liberated the Philippines and has since been a sovereign state. However, in 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law, suppressing Democracy in the country. Democracy was later brought back in 1986. A new constitution was drafted on 2024, marking a new era for the Philippines.
