It's not what a nation can do but what a player actually has experience in, IRL. Officers aren't IC positions although the players can drop a character in for IC announcements or RP use. Min was chosen because he has a crapton of experience when it comes to meshing genre in a game, communicating to a player base, designing RP, teaching, and delegating responsibility. That doesn't mean he keeps the position forever. They come up for vote. I had voiced an interest in it, but Min was better qualified even though I'm a Mentor familiar with all those aspects.

The reason behind that is we're a repository group, not an alliance, meaning we're forming a pool of players that we can draw from when we want to run character-based RP. We're working together to build up our nations' canon, but also we've formed a group where we don't have to worry that some trifling little asshat will destroy our RPG by posting "I burn down teh palace and kill all the wimmenz". It's why we won't bar people if their nation practices things like slavery, and we'd allow a fascist nation in. The players themselves have to have the ability to play those things off well, though.

You probably should have made it clearer that it had more to do with OOC qualifications and responsibilities. I got the whole "nation building, RP group, not-an-alliance" stuff, but this is all put together (the charter, the mission purpose, the application with the section about the representative, etc) as if it was going to be an IC group for diplomacy and cooperation. Am I taking it correctly that this group is "illuminati-esque" and unheard of by our citizens because it, literally, doesn't exist ICly? An [OOC] tag somewhere would have been useful.

Anyway, I might take the Librarian position (Yes, I know it's not the same type of librarian, I'm not stupid ), however, what 'qualifications' must I have for that? What are the responsibilities entailed? I have three AP classes that I'm taking that are threatening my free time, with me eventually having to post only once every week or two being a real possibility. The group exists IC. The people serving as officers at the start are players that excel at those tasks and have been part of the planning. It's only fair that their nations continue to be allowed to stand in those positions, but OOC-wise, a player has to be capable of doing the physical work. It's the player that does all the work OOC, not the nation.

What I mean by a repository: Dyste threw his famous banquet years ago. A group of people participated and found they enjoyed gaming together. More RP spun off that core group. Some of us will join a RP if we see a familiar name because we've enjoyed the experience in the past. Dyste's banquet ended and everyone went home. What if we all still had a reason to gather and stay in touch as a group? That's a familiar experience for RPers. OSS allows people to have a "home group" that builds canon together over time.

Societies are an awesome thing. Sharing those societies with others is fantastic. For example, I can tell you exactly what King Tyroth's castle grounds look like, and what the castle looks like inside. The library is exceptionally stunning. I've "been there". I can tell you what it smells like inside a Cerian city, and how the streets feel crunchy under your boots as you walk. I can tell you all about the horrible advertising on the sides of vehicles, and the appalling 'restaurants' where you kill your own dinner. I've "been there". A repository gives us a host of "hosts" to choose from, even if it's just a pickup game. We meet more players as they join. However, we do group RPGs as well.

What we don't do is worry about faction RP. Wars etc. Members can engage in wars, of course, but no one is required to participate or donate funds and resources to something they don't believe in.


"Mrs." is alright for a title. Miss, Mr., Mrs., Dr., Ambassador, Minister... it's all good. Ambassador works.

You know, I'm glad I joined this group. Although I've RP'ed plenty with others, I've never really had anyone come to me saying they've enjoyed our RP. I never really seem to affect the canons of others, like they do to mine (For instance, Terraport is located in The Aspari Syndicate, Dyste will soon be responsible for our perfection of teleportation, etc etc). Despite having been here on NS for almost a year now (there was a period of inactivity), I still have a feeling that my canon feels forever alone. ='(

Now that I'm part of this "repository" I'm looking forward to actually meaning something in the history of other nations, as they would to mine. I'm also looking forward to finally having more visitors on Planeia! All eleven billion of us are aching for more tourists! We're always going to other places, making lights in their skies and stealing their cows, and now finally they're coming to us! Now people will remember our streets, with skyscrapers so high up it's disorienting, blinding lights in every direction, holograms too, scantily clad blue people with futuristic fashion, and flying cars going so fast they nearly decapitate you! =)

The Holy Emperor Alexius (V) of House Davron committed one of the worst atrocities in history. He ordered the "Black Sun" super weapon to be launched. The "Black Sun" destroyed the Consortium's home system wiping their entire solar system off the map. Trillion were killed. Peace was implemented but the Holy Emperor was deposed in a coup d'etat by the Council of Elders, his son became Holy Emperor Decius (III) of House Davron and he put his father on trial for war crimes and genocide. The verdict was guilty. Alexius (V) asked for Trial by Combat. Alexius (V) chose himself as his champion while Decius (III) decided to choose his uncle, Alexius youngest brother, Helion as his champion. The two fought and Alexius (V) was slain. Posthumously he has been given the title of "The Scourge."

The Empress turned to her sister, "You know we need allies, especially now that the Darkness is coming." The Empress looked from the balcony over the Great City of Presidium. Built by her ancestors many millennia ago.
"Yes, I know," her sister said quietly. "Why can't you send Lucien or Marcus?" she asked pleading with her eyes.
The Empress simply turned to her sister and sighed, "You know why, Lucien is next in line since..." tears welled up in her eyes. "Since Sebastian was killed." The Heir Apparent had been killed a year earlier in an assassination attempt on the Imperial Family that hospitalized a dozen members, killed four of them and scared the Empress. "I need you to go, please Livia. You will be doing me a great service." The Empress sat back down in her chair with a bit of a thud. The two Imperial Guards by the door stood ever motionless as they watched over the Empress.
"Fine, Corona, I will go. Do not ask me for something like this again, please." With that the Grand Duchess stood and bowed before making her quick departure. The Empress just sighed and went back to looking at the reports from the Defense Minister.

For those wondering... the OSS has been in the works a long while now, although the name and scope changed as time went on. especially after the MSU came along. We didn't want to detract from that group's purpose so we tweaked the OSS' purpose to make it less "protect all the peoples" and more "provide a safe gaming haven for all the players". There are notes upon notes upon notes, and so many "op boxes" drafts! That's why the officer positions are pretty much filled. The players have been involved in the creation process and are familiar with the basics, and what did and didn't work during the thinking process. That doesn't mean that incoming players can't leave their mark. We've left things wide open, so players can form committees and other groups to enhance their own game experience.

We had a similar overarching concept but you published first. It's better to step away and go back to the drawing board than to look like we were doing a copy. Some elements remain, such as players can run any species or tech level, though. We'd need that to have that if we didn't want to remain "only FT/alien".
