WELCOME TO NUEVO MESHIKO!

"As the founder of the International Exchange Student Program, I am proud to see this moment. When I was a student like you, I spent several years as an exchange student in other countries. This was a life-changing experience for me, and broadened my horizons far beyond what they would have been otherwise. I was heartbroken when I saw the program that I had used to travel the world fall apart, destroying my dreams that many students might have the chance to do what I did, and to see the world from the viewpoints of many different cultures. When I graduated from graduate school, I decided that I was going to do something about that problem. So I learned, and eventually managed to raise enough money to send a group of fifteen Cenerian students to school in another country. This was a great achievement, and gave me great hope. Over the years, the program has expanded, and we have now been able to bring all of you from around to world to this one spot, this one school, in Meshik, Nuevo Meshiko. And I must say, wow. I never, ever expected to actually make it here. But this just shows what hard work, and a bunch of amazing friends, donors, and colleagues can do to make the world a better place.

So, without any further ado, I would like to not only welcome you to Nuevo Meshiko, but declare the 2014 school year officially started! Welcome to New Meshiko!"

Speech given by IESP President George Hawnings at the start of the school year.

Welcome to...
The Most Serene Sultanate of Nuevo Meshiko

Well, I did try to keep it short, but there is just so much to say... any questions, feel free to ask.

Image

Motto: Dar, y dar gracias... (Roughly meaning, "To give, and to thank...")
National capital: Meshik, Federal District
Currency: the Shūkur (MSK), with an unfixed exchange rate of 1.72 Universal Standard Dollars (USD) per Shūkur

Geography:

Nuevo Meshiko has two different maps; the map to be used for this RP, should Nuevo Meshiko be selected, can be seen here. Nuevo Meshiko is divided into seven federal entities, comprised of six walayat (provinces), and one federal district. The Federal District is the tropical Isle of Meshik, where the city of Meshik, national capital and cultural and economic center of the nation, is located.

Image
The Palacio de las Mil Noches, Nuevo Meshiko's most famous mosque
Meshik has often been described as a bustling, modern metropolis, busy by day and lively at night. At the heart of the city lies the famed Plaza Coránica, where citizens gather for anything from witnessing government speeches to music and dancing to simply taking a walk and picking fruit from its gardens. The old Plaza has been a witness to everything, from the dissolvement of the Meshikan Empire, to the arrival of important international figures and the presentation of the new Sultana.

The Plaza is flanked to the East by the grand Palace of One Thousand Nights, the nation's largest and most sacred mosque, and to the West by the Palace of the Government, where many public servants, including the President, live and work. The northern side of the plaza features a glistening lake, and to the south you will find Avenida Meshiko, the "main street," if you will, of the city. It is here where all foreign embassies are located.

The city is served by two airports, one which handles domestic flights, and the one to the north, Dagame International Airport (MDG), which handles international and interregional flights on a daily basis. This is where you will be arriving and leaving.

The city is well connected, with adequate transport infrastructure and public transport services. Transportation, like many other commodities, is free for all citizens, and foreigners must pay a small fee upon entrance to the nation to be able to use them (exceptions are made for international students). The city is connected to the mainland via ferries and through an undersea tunnel crossing the Bay of Meshik.

Surrounding the city, you can find tropical jungles, pristine beaches and everything from nice hotels to beachside cabins. The island is its own tropical paradise, but it's up to you to explore it.

Meshik is Nuevo Meshiko's chosen host city.

Politics:

Nuevo Meshiko is divided into six political units, called walayat, or provinces. Each walayah is free to govern itself according to its own laws, and each walayah has a constitution that cannot contradict the Federal Constitution. The Federal District is not a part of any walayah, as it is the seat of national power. The incumbent President is Roberto Andrews Izárraga, hero of the Meshikan Revolution and considered the founder of the new nation. Although called a Sultanate, the Sultan no longer holds any political power whatsoever, and is merely a ceremonial position. The provinces of Nuevo Meshiko are united in a federation whose government is representative, democratic and republican, based on a presidential system whose framework is laid out in the 2013 Federal Constitution (Constitución Federal). The Constitution holds the tenets of human rights and social and economic equality as fundamental principles, while establishing three levels of government: the federal (national), the provincial, and the municipal governments.

The bicameral Grand Congress of the Sultanate, composed of a Senate and a Chamber of Deputies, makes federal law, declares war, imposes taxes, approves the national budget and international treaties, and ratifies diplomatic appointments. Seats to federal and state legislatures are elected by a system of parallel voting that includes plurality and proportional representation. The Executive is the President of Nuevo Meshiko, who is the head of state and government, as well as Supreme Commander of the Nuevo Meshikan Armed Forces. The President also appoints the Cabinet and other officers, and he is responsible for executing and enforcing the law. He has the authority of vetoing bills. The Judiciary branch of government is the Supreme Court of Justice, comprising eleven judges appointed by the President with Senate approval, who interpret laws and judge cases of federal competency. Other institutions of the judiciary are the Electoral Tribunal, collegiate, unitary and district tribunals, and the Council of the Federal Judiciary.

Language and culture:

Throughout its rather complicated history, Nuevo Meshiko has been the point of convergence of many different cultures at different points throughout its history. Its modern culture is a reflection of its heritage.

Perhaps the most striking aspect, for foreigners, is the national language, in particular, reading it. Meshikan Spanish, while nearly identical to Standard Spanish in most ways, has the peculiarity that it is written almost exclusively in the Arabic script. So, while any Spanish-speaking foreigner will readily understand Meshikan conversations, they will most certainly have difficulty reading it if they are not familiar with the Arabic script. This method of writing Spanish is known as aljamiado, and evolved as Arabic became less and less common, but the script remained. Fortunately for non-speakers, you will be hard-pressed to find a Nuevo Meshikan who can't speak English, as the language is co-official with Spanish and is obligatory in all schools and at all grade levels.

Most of the nation's 113 million inhabitants are Muslims, of these, around 10 to 12 million reside in Meshik alone. The city is home to a fair number of Christians and Jews as well, and to adherents of other religions. Despite Islam being the national religion, freedom of religion is a fundamental right, and each citizen is free to practice his/her own beliefs openly, so long as they do not harm others.

The variety of Islam practiced in the country is often described as "Quranic," and "progressive," meaning Nuevo Meshikans place emphasis on the individual interpretation of the Qur'an, rather than on the following rulings or "fatwas," as is the case of other predominantly Muslim nations. Despite a great amount of devotion from the faithful, sharia law isn't a thing. It is expressly forbidden in the Constitution, which emphasizes the importance of the secular state.

The Sultan is seen as the "religious reminder," if you will, and is there, according to those who believe, "to remind the people of the existence of God and of the importance of tolerance, thankfulness and respect." The person in charge of that position is democratically elected, and is in no way seen as divine or infallible, but just as another human being. The present holder is Sultana Esperanza I, elected in November of 2013.

Religion forms a vital part of most Nuevo Meshikans' lives, but it is far from being the only thing they are devoted to. The arts are hightly appreciated, and painters, singers and sculptors will ofter present their latest works publicly in the Plaza, or in any of the museums, galleries and concert halls. Meshik is also home to several prestigious universities, including the University of Meshik, alma mater of the incumbent president and many other important national figures.

Neo-Meshikan cuisine has been highly influenced from all across the globe, and you can find anything from authentic Meshikan tacos and traditional sweet bread to fancy restaurants serving exquisite pastas to your liking. Popular sports include soccer, volleyball, tennis and basketball.

Things you should be aware of:

  • The nation is socialist. Therefore, yes, taxes are high, but most essentials, such as housing, electricity, water, education, healthcare and public transportation are completely free to all citizens. A well controlled but booming private sector exists, mostly in the tourism industry.
  • At least in Nuevo Meshiko, socialist does not mean poor. There are no long lines or shortage of food. Nuevo Meshiko is in fact, quite a developed nation, and is one of the richest in its current RP Region. It boasts an HDI of 93%.
  • Feel free to debate sociopolitical, intellectual and religious subjects with Nuevo Meshikans; they like to share and receive ideas. Most Nuevo Meshikans, however, hold tolerance in high regard, and will rarely put up with profanities, bullying or the insulting of other people's beliefs. So don't do it, unless you are looking for scorn from your peers.
  • While alcohol is legal for anyone over the age of 17, public drunkeness is not, and can result in your being taken away by the police.
  • Most other drugs are illegal. Marijuana is legal in the privacy of your own home. However, its purchase, sale, or possession in large quantities remain illegal, which is why those Nuevo Meshikans who wish to have it grow a pot or two in their garden, and keep it around for therapeutic or medical purposes.
  • Firearms and most weapons are illegal, unless you a special permit from the Government. This permit is only granted in very specific instances, and no, international students are not granted it. If you feel like shooting, you can target practice with a harmless air rifle at your local shooting gallery.
  • Security is high in all entrance points to the nation. Your luggage will be duly inspected to insure no illegal item makes it into the country. Passports must be valid for at least six months before the planned departure date, and are to be stamped upon entering and exiting the country.

That being said, we are greatful to have been chosen as your first host! We do love to have guests!

Key Places
Here I will provide links to descriptions of places in Meshik and elsewhere that you may or may not encounter during the roleplay. It is for informative purposes only; please note that these descriptions may come from other RPs. Use the context to get a feel of what the host nation is like, but feel free to get creative! Having fun is what roleplay is about...
I will be adding more places and descriptions as they become relevant and the roleplay develops.

Air Rhode, Flight 403 to Nuevo Meshiko
As the light turned off, signalling that passengers may remove their seat belts, Henry pulled out his laptop. He opened up the screen and turned it on, breathing out heavily and leaning his left arm onto his armrest, nearest to the window. It was dark outside, almost 4 o'clock in the morning. Clouds blocked the night sky, but it was not as if Henry particularly cared about seeing the night sky. The glare from the laptop screen caused a young couple trying to sleep behind him to grumble annoyedly. "Stupid kid, stupid laptop, 4 in the bloody morning..." The young man behind him mumbled. Henry just grinned to himself and continued what he was doing.

He was angry enough at his parents, forcing him to sit Economy Class. What is this. He thought to himself. I deserve to sit in 1st Class, not with these... lowlifes. He shrugged lower into his seat and put on a pair of headphones. He quickly opened up a small document. He looked around nonchalantly to check if anyone else was using a laptop. Bingo. A young teen girl, about his age, was watching a movie on her laptop a few rows in front of him. He began to type in the document, and within minutes, he had copied the movie off the girl's computer and onto his own. He sighed, pleased with his work and laid back to watch his movie...

Zoey was reading a book on Quantum theory. She did not find it very interesting, yet her mother had given it to her as a birthday present. Not a very nice birthday gift at that, since her mother was the author. Just another attempt to try and get Zoey to move ahead in a science career. But, what he mother did not know, and would most likely never know, since Zoey was too scared to tell her, was that she had exchanged the book for a different version in Spanish.

Zoey didn't care much for the content, but she was able to practice her understanding of Spanish. Languages fascinated her. She was trilingual, like most Rhodeve kids, knowing how to speak English, French and Rhodevan, yet she continued on to learn many more languages, yet not as well as she would have liked. Practice makes perfect She thought to herself.

Nuevo Meshiko International Airport

Henry left the plane and met up with Zoey, the other Foreign exchange student going to NM. He thought she was a complete nerd. But... she was kinda cute. Henry had his bag hanging off one shoulder, and a large suitcase at his side. It had all the necessities. Plus quite a bit of cash. Anything that would be needed to buy extra stuff in this place.
Zoey put her book in her bag and pulled up the handle on her suitcase. She looked around, admiring the foreign architecture. "Well, Zoey." henry said, while nudging her in the shoulder. "Look at those foreigners over there." He chuckled at the way they were dressed. Zoey slapped his arm. "Shh! That is just how people dress here. Remember what the minister told you. It is disrespectful to call people foreigners. Even if it is the norm in Rhodevus, it might not be here."
"Buzz off. Let me enjoy this place for a second before you start ruining it."
Zoey gasped in anger and turned to face the other way, not wanting to look at Henry. "A'atka Laman... Nureto..." (Rhodevan: What a pain... Ass)
Henry laughed. "Just because I am not as smart as you, doesn't mean that I can't understand Rhodevan."
"I meant for you to. Just... not everyone else." Zoey said angrily
Henry smiled. "The little was is feisty!" This provoked Zoey to slap Henry again.

Now, the two just waited until others began to show up.

Dagame International Airport

William Burke glanced down the line of Rhodeves disembarking from the passenger aircraft. He started forwards as he saw two high schoolers walk out of the jetway.

"Good evening. Zoey Clarke and Henry Burgeon?" When the two replied affirmatively, he smiled, and shook their hands. "I'm William Burke from the International Exchange Student Program. We are all meeting up in the lounge over at C4. Would you mind following me?" He began to walk down the concourse, the two students following. "You are the first to arrive. You will probably have to wait for about three hours before the last of this morning's students get here. I'm sorry about that, as three hours is a long time to wait in an airport."

Nuevo Meshinko International Airport

Nathan and Louis Vassilov awoke as their plane touched the tarmac and began to taxi into place. Nathan looked out the window right next to his seat and a sneer spread across his face. He turned to Louis "Why did Richard send us here again? These damned foreigners dont deserve royalty in their midst." he said motioning to the scene outside. Louis slugged him on the shoulder "Hush! We came here to learn, well I did, no school would take you so you didn't have a choice. And don't be xenophobic here, we are in their country and we need to respect that." Nathan slugged his brother back "I think it should be ours, but Richard is to much of a pus to do anything about it, we could easily erase this stain from the map." This comment was met with a icy stare from Louis.

As they walked out they saw Zoey standing around. Louis walked up to her and put out his hand "Hello. I am Louis Vassilov and this is my brother Nathan." he motioned behind him to Nathan who was starting to space out "Who are you I might ask. Sorry if I should know you name, I wasn't informed on the names of most of my classmates." Nathan scoffed and wandered off but it wasn't long before he was next to William Burke. He turned and gave him a judging glare "Who the hell are you?"

You will probably have to wait for about three hours before the last of this morning's students get here. I'm sorry about that, as three hours is a long time to wait in an airport."

Henry shrugged. "That's fine." He said, not caring much about what the man was saying.

Tripoli International Airport, Emirate of Tripoli, KwaDai:
Maxim Allard had just arrived into Tripoli International Airport to catch part two of his journey to Nuevo Meshiko. In the last fifteen hours he had finished packing, checked his passports and tickets, slept, woke up, said goodbyes to his friends and family at Yafran International Airport and took a short flight across KwaDai to the capital, Tripoli where the his flight to Nuevo Meshiko would take off. Here he was to meet the other KwaDaian student who was travelling as another exchange student with him. Her name was Rania al Sharif. "She was lucky", Maxim thought "She lives in Tripoli"
Maxim and Rania were part of an International Exchange student programme and would be joining up with other teenagers from around the world to experience life and school in Nuevo Meshiko.
Tripoli International Airport was a magnificent building built on the sea front in Tajoura a division of Tripoli. The airport was sleek and high-tec with three terminals, three being the one Maxim and Rania were to use today. It was hub for Imperial Arab Airways, KwaDai's luxury flag carrier.

Maxim waited on the other side of customs for Rania, she was a beautiful girl with tanned skin and dark brown hair. Her eyes were the same colour as Maxim's a light shade of brown. Maxim too was very handsome he had a lighter brown shade of hair with a more lightly tanned skin also. Like Rania his facial features were all perfect. KwaDaian people paid close attention to appearance and personal hygiene therefore they were always neat and particular about clothing and presenting themselves well. Rania wore the traditional Arabic abaya with a headscarf which did not cover her face. Maxim was wearing teal coloured chinos with a grey long sleeve polo shirt and a blue scarf, it certainly was not cold in KwaDai during the summer with temperatures averaging 34°c every day on the coast but on the evening the day before a rare summer thunderstorm and flash flood had caused a lot of cooling and reduced current temperatures down to about 28°c. It was raining whilst the two waited for their flight but not heavily.

After clearing final passport and ticket checks Rania and Maxim boarded Imperial Arab Airways Flight IA126 Maxim and Rania found their seats next to the window about halfway down Economy Class of the plane. Unlike other airlines Imperial Arab Airways Economy Class was better than most airlines business class with five star entertainment and food provided all seats were equipped with iPads and liberal amounts of legroom.

Once safety announcements and the plane took off Maxim turned to asking Rania some questions. "So Rania, we have a long flight so we may as well get to know each other better, care to share with me a little about yourself?"
"Of course, why not?, Well you know I live in Tripoli. I am 17, I like travelling, cats, meeting new people and learning new things. I have two younger brothers. Also I speak Arabic and Italian as well as English and I'm Muslim as you probably guessed. What about you?", Rania replies smiling revealing her perfect white teeth.
"Me, well I live in East Yafran with my parents, younger brother and older sister, I'm 17 and love learning languages, art and music. Previously I lived in Sabha.I am a speaker of Arabic and French as well as English but I'm learning German and hopefully Italian, oh and I'm gay but I have only come out to my friends and sister all of whom took it well and supported me and now I've just come out to you", Maxim explains waiting for Rania's reaction to it(or to one part in particular) "Awesome, I'm glad they supported you, now you have another supporter", Rania says nicely

After a few hours of talking and using iPads and watching a film the plane and Maxim and Rania began to near Nuevo Meshikan airspace and the announcements as made to remain seated and prepare for landing.

"Wow Rania, we're here, time to meet everyone else", Maxim said rather excitedly once they began to walk off the plane and into the terminal.

Burke walked to the gate as the plane from KwaDai landed. "Maxim Allard and Rania al Sharif?" He asked as two teenagers stepped off the aircraft. "I'm William Burke from the International Exchange Student Program. Would you mind following me to C4?"

"Nice to meet you, Mr.Burke", Rania said politely trying to get the pronunciation right, In KwaDai the letter r is rolled slightly and the letter k is a hard sound while waiting for Maxim to clear his passport. Maxim then walked over to Mr. Burke and Rania. "Hello, nice to meet you", Maxim said with the typical KwaDaian accent which was rather odd being a blend of soft French and soft Arabic.
"Of course", he said following Mr.Burke toward C4

Miles slinked off the plane in quiet amazement at the bustle of the airport, and looked lost as he wandered about, looking for someone to greet him. He adjusted his glasses as he stood in the swirl of people and retrieved his guidebook from his satchel and poured over it, trying to find where pick-up was. He hoped that he would be well received in this strange culture.

"Miles Steller?" Asked Burke as he approached the gate. "I am Williame Burke, from the International Exchange Student Program. We are all gathering at gate C4. Would you mind coming with me?" He led the way to C4, and introduced the Meinkraftian (OOC: Is this right?) to his fellow students.

On board Apollo Airways Flight 2290

Derrick looked up from his book to find there was only 20 minutes until landing. He sighed, quickly finished his soda and put away his tray, and tried to flatten his hair as the airplane approached the airport.

He was nervous, being the shy person he was. "If only someone else from Pey could come." He thought to himself. But he was the only one. The plane touched down on the runway, so he took time to organize his bag as the plane taxied.

Soon enough, he found himself in a foreign airport in a foreign land surrounded by foreign people. He knew he was supposed to meet someone here, but he had forgotten who it was. He sat down on a nearby bench, then printed his name on a sticky note on his shirt, before connecting to the airport wifi as he waited for someone to (hopefully) approach him.

OOC: Sorry for the short post. My posts will get longer once we actually arrive at the school.

"Derrick Lont?" Asked Burke as he approached. "I am Williame Burke, from the International Exchange Student Program. Welcome to Neuvo Meshiko! We are all gathering at gate C4. Would you come with me?"

When they arrived, Burke stood up on a chair and cleared his throat. "Students!" The lounge quieted. "We are now waiting on just one more plane. As soon as it lands, we will take a quick bus trip to the school. Thank you for your patience!" he stepped down, and the chatter of the newly acquainted students continued.

(OOC: Yes)

He jumped at the sound of his name, and spun around to meet Mr. Burke. "Uhm, hi...yeah, alright...." he stuttered, still a bit in shock, but with a smile on his face. He offered a curt wave to the other students as he blew his hair out of his face and fell in stride with them.

Edit:

Once they had arrived, he sat alone in a chair, and didn't really converse with anyone.

The People's Federation of Nerotysia

Anastasia Dvornikov was not very happy as she slouched in a woefully hard airport seat, just outside of the gate which hid the plane destined for Meshik.

For one thing, she had forgotten her laptop at her home in Okachenko, and now faced an extended period of time without any access to many of her favorite digital art programs.

It was as she was panicking about her laptop that she realized she had also forgotten her iPad, and so now she faced an extended period of time without any significant internet-connected machines except for her phone. She wondered how she forgot the two things that were perhaps most integral to her happiness.

So, when her companion on this program arrived, her face resembled a menacing batch of storm clouds and her carry-on luggage was strewn about the seats allocated for the IESP students. His face was quite neutral as he arrived, though his eyes were darting around like frogs. He greeted her as he cleared away enough of her things to take a seat.

"Pozdrav. Ste Anastasia Dvornikov?" (Greetings. Are you Anastasia Dvornikov?)

She reluctantly sat up a bit straighter and collected her things around her.

"Ja. Mislim, da ste Miroslav?" (Yeah. I guess you're Miroslav?)

"Ja." (Yeah.)

Silence ruled the space between them. Miroslav wasn't much of a talker, and Anastasia was not really in the mood to be her usual talkative self. However before they entered the plane and completely withdrew into their music players, she did start up some conversation.

"Torej ... ste navdušena, da greva na Meshiko?" (So...you excited to go to Meshiko?)

"Ja, vedno sem si nekako želel potovati. In vi?" (Yeah, I've always kinda wanted to travel. And you?)

"Ja, ton. To je bilo prekleto bitka prepričevanju moje starše, da me spusti." (Yeah, tons. It was a freaking battle convincing my parents to let me go.)

Miroslav made a noise of acknowledgement, and then the plane was ready and they were shot through the sky to Meshik.

The Most Serene Sultanate of Nuevo Meshiko

As the giant Air Nerotysia aircraft rumbled onto the runway of Dagame International Airport, Miroslav looked out in wonder at the strange new country. The gold lettering of the airport flashed as the plane passed it by. Anastasia crept to the empty seat behind him to get her own glimpse at the new land.

Their eyes remained glued to the glass until the aircraft stopped completely, when they hurriedly assembled their luggage and disembarked into the new world.

Almost immediately, they recoiled. The heat, though not too high due to the airport's air conditioning, was perhaps the most striking foreign element of this new place. Temperatures in even the warmest parts of Nerotysia rarely exceeded seventy degrees Fahrenheit, and where Miroslav and Anastasia were from, the highest temperature they'd ever seen was sixty Fahrenheit. This new tropical oven would take some getting used to for these students who had grown up in the wintry north.

They uncomfortably made their way into the terminal, for the first time feeling rather annoyed at the rather thick clothing they wore. As soon as they exited the tunnel, Anastasia stopped and ripped off her sweatshirt. Miroslav wished he had a sweatshirt to remove, wearing a longsleeves t-shirt.

Burke walked wearily to the last gate, having been informed that the plane had at last arrived. He straightened up and put a smile on his face as the passengers began to get off. Two teenagers detached themselves from the line, and Burke walked up to them. "Anastasia Dvornikov and Miroslav Danshov?" They nodded. "I am William Burke from the IESP. You are the last ones to arrive this morning. Welcome to Nuevo Meshiko!" He paused for a moment. "We are going to take a bus ride to the school, during which you can get acquainted with the other students. Could you follow me?"

Burke led the way to the lounge at C4, where he stood up in the chair once more. "Everyone!" He paused to let the chatter cease. "We are going to head out to the loading area now. Could you all follow me!" He began to walk towards the exit, followed by all the students. At the exit, a guard stopped Burke. They conversed in Meshikan Spanish for a moment, and then Burke faced the students. "Aparrently, you all have to fill out a quick form before we can leave the airport."

The guard passed out the form, which the students quickly completed. As soon as they were done, Burke led the way to the bus, where two other men from the IESP waited. They helped the student load their luggage into the bus, and then all the student got in. The bus finally pulled away from the curb, and the students were at last on their way to their new school.
