Hmm. I hope there's a method to the madness, other than getting all the exchange students picked off.

Huh. Think I know who I'm not voting for... xD jk

In all seriousness, I do believe that since the foreign exchange students are receiving the same protection as the host nation's citizens, it holds that they must abide by the host nation's rules as well.

I suggest that, prior to vote, each host nation give a quick rundown of what things are like in their nation, in the way of language and customs, basic laws, basic geography, manners and etiquette, and things the students should be aware of/warned about. A little bragging is okay, I guess (after all, this will give us an idea of where we'd like to go), but this should be informative, most of all.

Of course, guest students are free to follow the rules or not, but they must also deal with the consequences that may arise from their actions...

Just my two cents.

I definitely agree that this is what potential hosts should do. It will be very important to know this stuff before the actual RP, so the host nation doesn't spend the first little while explaining us all this stuff while the RP is happening.

I think the minimum should be 3 until we prove ourselves to be able to handle that many individual personalities. this way, the OP and Co-Ops can keep everything under control and benefit people that actually have the skill instead of people creating the maximum just so they have the biggest group.

Quick Rundown on Nuevo Meshiko

Postby Nuevo Meshiko » Mon Aug 18, 2014 8:01 pm

The Most Serene Sultanate of Nuevo Meshiko

Well, I did try to keep it short, but there is just so much to say... any questions, feel free to ask.

Image

Motto: Dar, y dar gracias... (Roughly meaning, "To give, and to thank...")
National capital: Meshik, Federal District
Currency: the Shūkur (MSK), with an unfixed exchange rate of 1.72 Universal Standard Dollars (USD) per Shūkur

Geography:

Nuevo Meshiko has two different maps; the map to be used for this RP, should Nuevo Meshiko be selected, can be seen here. Nuevo Meshiko is divided into seven federal entities, comprised of six walayat (provinces), and one federal district. The Federal District is the tropical Isle of Meshik, where the city of Meshik, national capital and cultural and economic center of the nation, is located.

Image
The Palacio de las Mil Noches, Nuevo Meshiko's most famous mosque
Meshik has often been described as a bustling, modern metropolis, busy by day and lively at night. At the heart of the city lies the famed Plaza Coránica, where citizens gather for anything from witnessing government speeches to music and dancing to simply taking a walk and picking fruit from its gardens. The old Plaza has been a witness to everything, from the dissolvement of the Meshikan Empire, to the arrival of important international figures and the presentation of the new Sultana.

The Plaza is flanked to the East by the grand Palace of One Thousand Nights, the nation's largest and most sacred mosque, and to the West by the Palace of the Government, where many public servants, including the President, live and work. The northern side of the plaza features a glistening lake, and to the south you will find Avenida Meshiko, the "main street," if you will, of the city. It is here where all foreign embassies are located.

The city is served by two airports, one which handles domestic flights, and the one to the north, Dagame International Airport (MDG), which handles international and interregional flights on a daily basis. This is where you will be arriving and leaving.

The city is well connected, with adequate transport infrastructure and public transport services. Transportation, like many other commodities, is free for all citizens, and foreigners must pay a small fee upon entrance to the nation to be able to use them (exceptions are made for international students). The city is connected to the mainland via ferries and through an undersea tunnel crossing the Bay of Meshik.

Surrounding the city, you can find tropical jungles, pristine beaches and everything from nice hotels to beachside cabins. The island is its own tropical paradise, but it's up to you to explore it.

Meshik is Nuevo Meshiko's host city candidate.

Politics:

Nuevo Meshiko is divided into six political units, called walayat, or provinces. Each walayah is free to govern itself according to its own laws, and each walayah has a constitution that cannot contradict the Federal Constitution. The Federal District is not a part of any walayah, as it is the seat of national power. The incumbent President is Roberto Andrews Izárraga, hero of the Meshikan Revolution and considered the founder of the new nation. Although called a Sultanate, the Sultan no longer holds any political power whatsoever, and is merely a ceremonial position. The provinces of Nuevo Meshiko are united in a federation whose government is representative, democratic and republican, based on a presidential system whose framework is laid out in the 2013 Federal Constitution (Constitución Federal). The Constitution holds the tenets of human rights and social and economic equality as fundamental principles, while establishing three levels of government: the federal (national), the provincial, and the municipal governments.

The bicameral Grand Congress of the Sultanate, composed of a Senate and a Chamber of Deputies, makes federal law, declares war, imposes taxes, approves the national budget and international treaties, and ratifies diplomatic appointments. Seats to federal and state legislatures are elected by a system of parallel voting that includes plurality and proportional representation. The Executive is the President of Nuevo Meshiko, who is the head of state and government, as well as Supreme Commander of the Nuevo Meshikan Armed Forces. The President also appoints the Cabinet and other officers, and he is responsible for executing and enforcing the law. He has the authority of vetoing bills. The Judiciary branch of government is the Supreme Court of Justice, comprising eleven judges appointed by the President with Senate approval, who interpret laws and judge cases of federal competency. Other institutions of the judiciary are the Electoral Tribunal, collegiate, unitary and district tribunals, and the Council of the Federal Judiciary.

Language and culture:

Throughout its rather complicated history, Nuevo Meshiko has been the point of convergence of many different cultures at different points throughout its history. Its modern culture is a reflection of its heritage.

Perhaps the most striking aspect, for foreigners, is the national language, in particular, reading it. Meshikan Spanish, while nearly identical to Standard Spanish in most ways, has the peculiarity that it is written almost exclusively in the Arabic script. So, while any Spanish-speaking foreigner will readily understand Meshikan conversations, they will most certainly have difficulty reading it if they are not familiar with the Arabic script. This method of writing Spanish is known as aljamiado, and evolved as Arabic became less and less common, but the script remained. Fortunately for non-speakers, you will be hard-pressed to find a Nuevo Meshikan who can't speak English, as the language is co-official with Spanish and is obligatory in all schools and at all grade levels.

Most of the nation's 113 million inhabitants are Muslims, of these, around 10 to 12 million reside in Meshik alone. The city is home to a fair number of Christians and Jews as well, and to adherents of other religions. Despite Islam being the national religion, freedom of religion is a fundamental right, and each citizen is free to practice his/her own beliefs openly, so long as they do not harm others.

The variety of Islam practiced in the country is often described as "Quranic," and "progressive," meaning Nuevo Meshikans place emphasis on the individual interpretation of the Qur'an, rather than on the following rulings or "fatwas," as is the case of other predominantly Muslim nations. Despite a great amount of devotion from the faithful, sharia law isn't a thing. It is expressly forbidden in the Constitution, which emphasizes the importance of the secular state.

The Sultan is seen as the "religious reminder," if you will, and is there, according to those who believe, "to remind the people of the existence of God and of the importance of tolerance, thankfulness and respect." The person in charge of that position is democratically elected, and is in no way seen as divine or infallible, but just as another human being. The present holder is Sultana Esperanza I, elected in November of 2013.

Religion forms a vital part of most Nuevo Meshikans' lives, but it is far from being the only thing they are devoted to. The arts are hightly appreciated, and painters, singers and sculptors will ofter present their latest works publicly in the Plaza, or in any of the museums, galleries and concert halls. Meshik is also home to several prestigious universities, including the University of Meshik, alma mater of the incumbent president and many other important national figures.

Neo-Meshikan cuisine has been highly influenced from all across the globe, and you can find anything from authentic Meshikan tacos and traditional sweet bread to fancy restaurants serving exquisite pastas to your liking. Popular sports include soccer, volleyball, tennis and basketball.

Things you should be aware of:

  • The nation is socialist. Therefore, yes, taxes are high, but most essentials, such as housing, electricity, water, education, healthcare and public transportation are completely free to all citizens. A well controlled but booming private sector exists, mostly in the tourism industry.
  • At least in Nuevo Meshiko, socialist does not mean poor. There are no long lines or shortage of food. Nuevo Meshiko is in fact, quite a developed nation, and is one of the richest in its current RP Region. It boasts an HDI of 93%.
  • Feel free to debate sociopolitical, intellectual and religious subjects with Nuevo Meshikans; they like to share and receive ideas. Most Nuevo Meshikans, however, hold tolerance in high regard, and will rarely put up with profanities, bullying or the insulting of other people's beliefs. So don't do it, unless you are looking for scorn from your peers.
  • While alcohol is legal for anyone over the age of 17, public drunkeness is not, and can result in your being taken away by the police.
  • Most other drugs are illegal. Marijuana is legal in the privacy of your own home. However, its purchase, sale, or possession in large quantities remain illegal, which is why those Nuevo Meshikans who wish to have it grow a pot or two in their garden, and keep it around for therapeutic or medical purposes.
  • Firearms and most weapons are illegal, unless you a special permit from the Government. This permit is only granted in very specific instances, and no, international students are not granted it. If you feel like shooting, you can target practice with a harmless air rifle at your local shooting gallery.
  • Security is high in all entrance points to the nation. Your luggage will be duly inspected to insure no illegal item makes it into the country. Passports must be valid for at least six months before the planned departure date, and are to be stamped upon entering and exiting the country.

That being said, I do hope our nation will be seriously considered as a host! We do love to have guests!

UNITED REGIONS OF VERONA
OVERVIEW

Image

Motto: Rise when everything falls.
Capital: Scresan
Currency: Vērcon (VER) with a current exchange rate of 2.34 Universal Standard Dollars (USD) per Vērcon
Population: 1.351 billion, due to its enormous size, and the huge immigration waves during the 1800's

GEOGRAPHY

The United Regions of Verona is one of a unique style, being one of the largest countries on the world. There are 23 federal divisions of the country, 23 regions. These regions are what other federations may call "states".
Some notice that the capital of the federation is not in a federal district, instead nestled in the capital region of Scresan, where the capital city of Scresan lays.

The capital of Scresan is indeed the countries largest city, housing one of the worlds largest skylines and also is one of the largest cities in the world. The city is then supported by one of the largest suburbs in the world, the
largest suburb of Unoki bigger then some cities in other countries.
Image
A view of the smallest district of the city, Goku

The city is served well by two airports, Scresan Airport, which barely handles any flights anymore, yet yields more international than domestic destinations. Only a handful of students are able to travel through
this rapidly-increasing private and government use airport. New Scresan International is where the rest of students will pass through this modern gateway to Verona, which holds an enormous amount of international destinations
and domestic, is a student ever runs away and gets a domestic flight in Verona. Critics are shocked how the old Scresan Airport even managed these.

When exploring the city, you can go to downtown city, with its booming metropolis and fabulous districts, or explore the suburban areas. You may even sneak out to the surrounding mountains and forests of the city and suburbs!
Or perhaps you will explore the ally ways and abandoned houses of the Negoa Suburb, where no one ever steps foot in anymore... Or, since it will be in summer, go to the fabulous beach, which is directly in front of the metropolis!

Transport for within the city is popular, with a humongous metro system, starting within the metropolis and spreading out within the suburbs, buses are also popular, however rarely serve the inner city and instead usually the suburbs,
whilst cabs are rarely used.

Scresan is a candidate for Verona, don't forget to vote!

POLITICS

The URV is split into 23 federal states, or as we call them "regions". Whilst the 23 Regions may govern themselves, they of course are superseded by the Hiroko Sako (Translates from Southern Veronan to English as "Ruling Body"),
which other nations also call Congress. Leader of the Hiroko Sako, is incumbent President Yara Gregovich, first female President of the URV and 3rd president since the nations re-founding in 1993. Her father served two terms in Presidency
until handing party leadership to his daughter at the end of his second term, and she won over the populous by winning the 4th Hiroko Sako Election, when her party won most seats. Social Democracy therefore is the most popular
political ideology of Verona.

CULTURE

Culture within Verona varies, however most of the population is adapted to Southern Veronan culture, and thus most of the population speaks Southern Veronan. Next widest spoken is Takiyami, which is often used to speak to a Northern or Southern
Veronan, depending on what you are, if the other does not know your type of Veronan. And next is English, for tourists, and last is Northern Veronan.

While there is no official religion due to secularism, Shinto is the largest religion within Verona, with atheism coming next, albeit its not a religion, just less than Shinto people are atheists. Religious vioolent discrimination is strictly prohibited for all religions, however
speaking out against any religion is allowed, as we keep free speech as one of our priorities.

A recent study gave the results of the religions in Verona, with Shinto at 76%, Atheism at 14%, Tokubushima at 6% and Other at 4%

Homosexuality and other LGBT within all regions are allowed, with violent hate crime against them prohibited, however just like every other thing, hate speech is somehow allowed due to free speech guaranteed. The President herself is bisexual!
LGBT pride is a major event within the year in the capital, where its ensured any anti-LGBT are steered far away from the streets, with military prowling the streets.

Food is based upon rice. Rice and red meat are the largest diets in the country, with after extensive polls, the nations favourite meal is rice and steak sandwich. However although you will see little pathway shops selling rice and meat, there are often
international cuisine restaurants dotted around cities and towns.

LAWS

Laws that exchange students should be aware of are,

  1. Murder is against the law with a minimum sentence of imprisonment until you die
  2. Manslaughter is against the law with a minimum sentence of 15 years of imprisonment
  3. Assault is against the law with a minimum sentence of 5 years of imprisonment
  4. Rape is against the law with a minimum sentence of 15 years of imprisonment
  5. The Age of Consent is 13.
  6. The legal age for drinking and smoking (cigarettes and cigars) is 18
  7. Drunk outside a bar during the day will leave you with a night in the police station
  8. Drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, crack, weed and other are strictly illegal, with imprisonment of 2 years
  9. Disobeying the police will leave you with a fine of V100 and a night in the cellars

AND LAST INFO

Please ensure when travelling to Verona that you do not forget your passport, and your documentation stating that you are a exchange student. Please ensure that you get your passport stamped, as on return you will be arrested on suspicion of sneaking in.
If your passport is forged you will be immediately arrested and deported. Failure to have a valid passport will mean deportation. Failure to have documentation will mean deportation. The finding of drugs will mean you will be arrested and deported.

Thank you for reading the bid for Verona, we do hope you vote for us!

Am I the only one who finds this a little unsettling...? :( The penalty for murder is more severe than that for manslaughter? :O
And, well I'm in no place to judge, but the age of consent is 13? :S

By Veronan definition, murder is intentional and manslaughter is not.

and it's a minimum of 15 years, if you have a fucking horrible jury and judge it could be the life

The age of consent is 13 due to that usually being the age of puberty. Of course, if they are at the age of cinsent but they didn't want to have the sex they got, that's rape
