Five hundred years ago, the great pirate Nayhar was the scourge of the great sea. Before his death, he built up a fortune in gold, silver and jewels, none of which has ever been uncovered. Rumors state that there is a great curse upon the treasure, cast by the pirate as he was impaled by the Prince Lowei, who went on to become the Kiansei Emperor.
For five hundred years, fear of the curse has left the treasure alone. However, these are 'modern' times, and men have been born who don't fear the curse of the dead. One of these men is Kan NelRun, Marquis Che, the descendant of a house that has fallen on hard times. Rather than sully his hand with trade, he's decided to pursue the rumors of lost treasure -- after all, these are modern times, and who believes in curses anymore?
Quite a lot of people, it seems, actually. NelRun has been unable to find many backers for his expedition, and even fewer workers, even among the peasantry. In desperation, he has advertised for foreigners to join him.

The treasure, if rumor is to be believed, is so vast even a quarter share could set a man up for life. Perhaps fortunately, because the terms of the contract give 1/4 of the treasure to the Marquis, with the remaining 3/4 to be divided amongst the backers equally.
