Love is just another experiment (@ Soldati senza confini)

Postby The High Tatras » Mon Jun 09, 2014 8:22 pm

Somewhere high above a foreign land, a dirigible flew. The dirigible was lifted by hot air and was powered by a very primitive form of internal combustion engine, using gunpowder as its fuel. It had two helms, allowing it to change directions without turning around, and it was armed with 6 breechloading falconets. Its pilot, who had also designed the craft, was none other than Hetman Kazimierz Bogdan Gorski the Mechanist, the elected leader of The High Tatras circa the 17th century. Also aboard was a crew of about 60 and his best and sometimes only friend, an orange tabby cat named “Amber”.

“This is without a doubt the most frightening thing I have ever attempted” said Kazimierz. “Meow!” said Amber to Kazimierz.

“I assure you that experiment was perfectly safe, it was in a controlled laboratory environment. It is not my fault that there was a catastrophic explosion that may have sent a few people to the hospital. I suppose you believe that I shall someday die by becoming entangled in the cogwheels of one of my own inventions?” replied Kazimierz to Amber.

Amber rolled her eyes at Kazimierz. The “frightening thing” he intended to attempt was to meet the Princess Alcestis Atali de Angulo of Soldati senza confini, and hopefully to initiate a romantic relationship with her. This would be no easy task, as many men had already attempted to do so, but none seemed to be good enough for her. Nor were they good enough for her overbearing father, King Carolus, who was very enthused with his daughter and had very high expectations of any potential suitor. To make matters even more difficult, Kazimierz had never had any kind of romantic relationship before. Only quite recently had the possibility of such a thing even occurred to him.

Kazimierz meticulously studied the flowcharts he had created based on what he had learned from a dancing master back in his homeland.

“I promised my Babushka that I would dance with a lady at least once every year. I must memorize these convoluted steps, no matter how ridiculous they may feel. We can stop twirling now, Amber.”

A few moments later, Hetman Kazimierz Bogdan Gorski the Mechanist and Amber both boarded a Da Vinci-esque ornithopter from their dirigible and, after a short flight, violently crash-landed somewhere in the vicinity of the entrance to a palace.

“I think that landing was about as graceful as my dancing” said Kazimierz to Amber.

Alcestis Atali de Angulo, princess of the Confinian Kingdom, was having quite a day. Her father, Carolus, had sent a message to several other nations in search of suitors. She was already getting tired with the entire show simply because she was coming to age to marry.

She understood her father only wanted the best for her, but really, what can he expect? She is a highly educated young woman who doesn't have the time to pursue either party boys or serious intellectuals. She wanted someone more balanced, someone that could both party and talk about serious things. Her passion for art also demanded someone who appreciated art and could actually stimulate her.

The door suddenly knocked.

Matilda, her servant, came around with Alcestis' lunch. She had a knack to eat at this hour, but at the moment she was not hungry.

"Please, leave the dish there, I'll eat it when I'm hungry" was all that Alcestis said before dismissing her servant, who didn't want to meddle with her. She knew Alcestis' moods by now, being her servant for 10 years now. She left the tray and dish there and prepared to leave when she heard Alcestis say with a soft voice "do you think my father knows what he's doing to me?" she said softly.

"I'm sure that, whatever it happens with his plans of marrying you off, he's looking into your best interests" she said as she approached Alcestis more "besides, I know the king wouldn't marry you off to someone who hasn't had the chance to court you the way he courted his lady". Yea, right, was all that Alcestis could muster to think. Her father had bought off her mother from the court with a hefty dowry. Her mother was unhappy but she became more or less resigned to be a trophy wife. Alcestis didn't want that.

Alcestis dismissed Matilda to think about her future, with or without love from her suitor.

Meanwhile at the gates to the palace, Kazimierz was rambling to the uniformed guards, who did not seem to be very fond of this strange foreigner.

"You see, in my country there are no servants or masters, at least in theory. We are all free men and women with natural God-given rights, and we are all equal through the eyes of God. My duties are to preserve and protect those natural rights, and if I fail to do that I can be recalled through a referendum. Will you please let me into the palace? I swear I am a sovereign, of a sort. I am a Hetman. H-e-t-m-a-n. It comes from the German term "Hauptmann", and that means "chief" or "head man". What do you mean I am dressed strangely? Surely my crimson brocade zupan is formal enough for this occasion? I am sorry I had to arrive on foot, because I have crashed my ornithopter again. I hope that you do not mind cats."

"That.. is all fine and dandy I guess" began one of the soldiers.

"Sadly," kept the other soldier "we cannot let you pass through. I'm sorry, but we don't even know why you're here, much less where you come from" said the man in a raspy voice. "We don't even know whether you're here as a robber or as a royal to meet with the king or anything. We won't let you pass until you explain yourself" said the guard.

Never mind the loud noise it makes, that is all part of the process that makes it fly. I received this invitation from your King Carolus that says she wishes to marry. I do not know if that is the case or if your King simply wants to use her as a diplomatic bargaining chip, I have certainly seen that happen quite a lot. I suppose I shall find out the truth soon enough. Our national motto is "Pravda vítězí!", and that means "the truth is victorious". We learned that phrase from the Czech Hussites." said Kazimierz to the palace guards.

"By the way, I am wondering, was this gate made specifically for me?"

Archduke Leopold Maximilian was a young cousin of The Holy Roman Emperor. He travelled to find a princess he could love.
He arrived from a ship and his entourage followed. His caretaker was an old count from Bohemia, he was a trusted stallion to the young Archduke and the court of Vienna.
The Holy Roman Emperor heard about the Confinian Kingdom and Carolus. He knew his cousin wanted a princess. Leopold wore a wig but with holes for cat ears, he was a Katzemensch, or a cat-person. He could mate with a human female, as he is close enough to regular humans. His tail rested on the back of his elegant coat and his hat had to make sure his ears were not in any uncomfortable position.
The Count said "Highness, the King knows but not the princess, but you certainly will charm her, I know, she will be struck by Authentic's arrows and will take you.
"I hope so, I want my lady to love me." Leopold replied
The Auzkhian delegates have reached the gates of the palace and stood before the soldiers.
"Greetings fair sentries, this is His Imperial and Royal Highness, Archduke Leopold Maximillian of Auzkhia, and I am Count Johann, his humble companion." said the noblepony.

The guards, deciding he had no reason to lie, decided to let him pass "I'm sorry, but as you know, many men try to marry the princess. We just want to make sure we gather the people the king wants inside" they opened the doors "please, go along Sir Hetman, just follow the path, you will be there shortly" they said.

Alcestis managed to get a glimpse of the guests. A half-beast? she thought I haven't seen those in my life. Just what in the world is my father thinking?! she began to cringe at the thought of her children. She kept on going, making as if she didn't notice them, to her quarters.

King Carolus was there shortly for the Archduke and the Count. "Greetings, your highness" said the king "welcome, welcome, make yourselves at home. You're here because of my daughter?" he asked.

Kazimierz found his way to the room shortly after the Archduke. He quickly began shaking and stuttering as soon he caught a glimspe of the princess.

"Um... Um... Um... My name is Hetman Kazimierz Bogdan Gorski the Mechanist. Uh.. I am here for the same reason he just said. I brought her a bouquet of edelweiss."

Amber the orange tabby cat rolled her eyes again.

"Greetings to you." said Leopold.
He became suspicious and looked at him, he wanted to marry the princess to put an end to his quest for love. He began to view the Hetman as a rival, an opponent that had to be vanquished. He put his right on the hilt of his sabre. Johann was ready to disarm the Archduke in case of a duel. He knew how unstable Leopold could be.

Leopold nodded and then walked through a corridor and hoping he could speak to his potential wife.

Kazimierz and Amber decided to wander throughout the palace as well, stopping periodically to admire the elaborate mosaics and frescoes and the exquisite tapestries. He did not seem to be as impressed by the library, which was significantly smaller and less well-stocked than his own library that doubled as his throne room. Then again, there were probably very few private libraries in the world that could rival his own. He was also disappointed by the complete lack of an underground research laboratory, but these few complaints were the exception rather than the rule. For the most part, he was thoroughly impressed.

"I wonder how much the poor souls of the Confinian Kingdom had to pay to their King in taxes for such an extravagant residence." said Kazimierz to Amber.

He recalled that his own comparatively austere residence more resembled a cold and dark fortress than it did a palace, and it was gradually falling into a state of disrepair. This filled him with pride. He wondered if a princess like Alcestis would even be willing to live there.

Inevitably, Kazimierz and Amber soon became lost in the labyrinthine halls, corridors, and passageways that connected each room to all of the others.

"I presume that a compass and a set of maps are not going to help us much with this predicament." said Kazimierz to Amber.

The ship had finally disembarked. Wan couldn't have been more happier, he had never felt so helpless with his life in the hands of a sea captain and the tides of the ocean. He was an Imperial General, not an admiral. As he and his small entourage of Barons and Counts within his duchy found transportation by way of carriage, Wan could not help but notice how different this foreign land was from his own. As the carriage passed the port and continued on to the palace in the distance, the Consul observed the way the people acted and his surroundings. He definitely did not want to be the boring, stereotypical, and emotionally unaware suitor he frequently saw in plays hosted by the Avatar Imperial back in the Imperial Prefecture. As the small caravan of carriages approached the palace, a herald was dispatched from the main group to announce the arrival of the princess' new suitor.

As the carriage passed the port and continued on to the palace in the distance, the Consul observed the way the people acted and his surroundings. The guards saw the Imperial Consul's caravan and they let him pass. "This way sir, you will find the castle right ahead. Our king has been expecting you" they said as they let him pass past the gates.

"Oh really?" The Imperial Consul's mind began to wonder as the Caravan came to a stop in the courtyard. Before the Consul stepped out of the carriage, he turned towards his entourage that was seated along in the carriage with him," No bending. None what so ever, if you fail to heed this warning, your bending will be taken away from you." He stepped out of the carriage making a point to comment on how wonderful the palace was. He turned to see the King standing only yards away, Wan walked up to the monarch and bowed very low. "Your Majesty, I am Wan Liao, War Consul to His August Majesty Yangchen Beifong, and Duke of Nysrodu. I thank you for allowing to court your daughter your highness."
