It got me thinking the other day and I just wondered what people thought about it. The US government is never going to be oppressive to the American public, the UN wouldn't allow it so why do Americans really need it?

I believe you are looking for General. Either way, the 2nd ammendment is vital to our nation. The freedom to keep and bear arms is not defended by the UN, in fact, most members of the UN have banned or drastically curbed that freedom.

And as we have seen, even with the Ammendment, people will try to ban them.
