Almajoya Announces Carnival Parade Schedule, Elections

JADE, 11 A.M.- Empress Melisma Ramijozana of Almajoya held a press conference this morning to make two major announcements: one, that this year's Carnival, the first to which the international community will be welcome, is in the final stages of planning; and two, that Almajoya will be electing a new Prime Minister and several Senators and Representatives this spring or summer.

Carnival in Almajoya

This year's Carnival holds its share of surprises. The Empress' annual Twelfth Night Masquerade Ball on January 6th will kick off the season; this year, international visitors will be welcome to request attendance. The ball is free of charge, but it is RSVP only, and the applicants will be accepted solely at the Empress' discretion. Also, as in the past, masks and formal attire will be required.

Almajoya's second election

The upcoming election will be the second since the Reyolucion da Paj. So far, only current prime minister Paterre Mercer has announced that he will run to keep his position. Aralian senator Ciaran Rachmaninoff is expected to run unopposed, having obtained the seat after no one else wanted it in the wake of late senator Sullivan Yuki's murder.

Empress Ramijozana also stated that she will not publicly support any candidates for election this year.

The Chancellor of Allbeama had read the news brief on his desk with a slight grin.To him it seemed a light hearted way to extend the hand of international friendship he thought was needed here. He called in the Vice Chancellor and his various aides and secretaries to discuss the possibilities.

After deliberating they drew up the following PR announcement:

The Chancellor of the Republic, Trevor Von Siegfried Allbeam shall attend the Carnival festivities in Almajoya. During this Season, the Vice Chancellor Magnus Von Freudenscherr shall act as Chancellor pro tempore. Our esteemed Chancellor shall implore the Empress to discuss at her leisure with him the possibilities of forging diplomatic ties between our two nations.

For once, Stuart House sought out a newspaper. He read the story, the part about the upcoming election, five times. Finally, he made a decision. He picked up a phone and dialed an international number that led to a cell phone in Almajoya.

Maybelline Waikara reached into her handbag and flipped open her phone. "Moshi-moshi."

"Hello, Maybelline," Stuart said in that charming tone. "It's Stuart."

"Ah, Stuart. Long time no hear."

"Indeed. How's the husband?"

"He's well," Maybelline answered sarcastically. "I'll tell him you said hello. How are the hookers?"

"Plentiful," Stuart responded. "I have a proposition for you."

"Stuart, you know I'm married."

"Oh, your husband will be up for this."

Maybelline hissed her teeth. "What do you want?"

"I want you to run against Ciaran Rachmaninoff."

She paused. "Hmm... that's tempting."

"I'll support your campaign."

"Financially?"

"Financially. And in any way else you may need."

Maybelline rubbed her chin as she thought about it.

The next morning, Melisma rushed into her office with barely a nod to her aide. As the flash of brown and black brushed by, Sybil Watanabe called out, "My Lady-"

Melisma stopped abruptly. "Yes?"

"The Chancellor of Allbeama has announced his intention to spend Carnival in Almajoya."

"I will write him a letter of appreciation. Thank you." Melisma fiddled with the key in the lock.

Sybil frowned. This was very, very unlike the Empress. "Is something the matter, my Lady?"

"No, dear. Everything's fine. Thank you."

Quickly, Melisma entered the office and closed the door behind her. She threw herself behind the cherry wood desk, found the PR announcement, and started typing furiously.

I've tested positive for latent abilities.

Such news has slowly become less of a shock over time. What else is new? We know now that anyone who was within ten miles of the Audubon nuclear plant during or immediately after the explosion will eventually develop these abilities- abilities that will raise us above our fellow men, allowing us to achieve many of our wildest dreams, until they overpower our bodies and cause our slow and painful deaths.

I hate to say "I told you so." God, I hate to say it, but I must. I warned all of you that the groups behind the building and maintenance of the plant were unreliable and unsafe. I told you that, as they had elsewhere, they would dump their toxic waste into our land and rivers, and that they would mismanage the plant and eventually cause an accident. I convinced the Board of Health to vote against the idea and issue an official warning. But you, good, naive people, voted for cheap and easy power, and your leader allowed known buffoons to guide the process.

While we are on the topic, why hasn't your leader, Stuart Gregory House, also tested positive? The rest of us have by now, nearly three years later. Wasn't he touring a school in Audubon that day? Or was it a hospital he was touring? It depends on which account he gave that you choose to believe. As for myself, I choose "neither," "none of the above." I believe he was nowhere near Audubon. I believe he was off somewhere, wrapped up in one of his many scandals.

I have known Stuart for years. He's a brilliant man, and an outstanding orator. But he acts in his own interest, not in yours.

Will you heed the call for change? There are plenty of men and women who would be proud to lead our worthy homeland. Why not ask House to step down, or better yet, hold elections? Surely he knows within himself that he has become a liability rather than the solid foundation he should be.

It is time to end the charade. Let madmen be mad, but not in power. Snowy Egrets deserves someone who can handle the pressure of leading- someone who knows that his purpose is his people, not himself. Non sibi sed suis. House has it backwards.

Teach him that one's priorities must be "not for one's self, but for one's own." I guarantee that you will experience a sharp turnaround in your lives and the way in which they are fated to end.

It has been suggested that the massive dictatorship Snowy Egrets is backing Waikara's campaign.

Just a quick note to let you know, in somewhat more formal fashion - Pleased be advised that yes, my family and I will be attending Carnival. Don't worry about housing us, the twins are a real handful. We have quarters ready on the AoL and that makes secuity our headache not yours. We'll be attending everything we can schedule in. Aeris and I will come for your 12th night ball, then I have to return to my duties. The AOL will be Portaled in on the 9th of February and I & the famlily will arrive on the evening of the 11th. If you are not busy, maybe you can find time to have dinner with us that night. Also I hope that you will do us the honor of being the guest of honor at our own masked ball.

"Tell Allbeama their weapons are approved," Melisma said over the intercom to Sybil as the bearers of the second message entered.

She read the message twice, then gave the pair a weak smile and said "Thank you. Please tell Rob that I have received this memo, and that I would be honored to attend dinner with the family and the ball."

She glanced at the missive again. What did that last mini-paragraph mean? "I don't mean to be rude," Melisma said carefully, "and I am always glad to have guests from Tanaara, but did Rob send you here just to notify me of his plans?"

New Olwe's royal family intends to visit Almajoya during Carnival, and if at all possible participate in the festivities. Grand Duchess Lily Greenleaf and four of her sisters will attend. The royal bodyguard, Florica, will be accompanying them along with a small, 3-man security delegation. The guards request permission to carry and wear swords, in the Olwean tradition. We also request non-smoking rooms at whatever lodging we are set up with. The ladies of the royal family may be bringing dates, though this has not yet been set in stone.

Last, but definitely not least, we have learned of Senator Ciaran Rachmaninoff's condition and wish to bring along a Master Wizard who can help train him in the use of his new abilities and hopefully prevent the powers from killing him. Anyone else who has been affected by the accident can also seek training, either from the wizard we're bringing if he can take on multiple apprentices or at the New Olwe School of Magic, which accepts foreign students no matter what their special abilities may be.

The man gave her a ghost of a grin, and a minute nod to his partner. For a heartbeat there was a sensation of pressure against Melisma's inner ears. His partner had activated a highly sophisticated privacy shell. And it would take far more than Almajoyan technology to pierce that subtle, invisible barrier.

HIs voice was a pleasant, warm baritone, with just a hint of roughness the the Tanaaran accengt. It fit him, matching the hard lean muslces and a little more rugged than handsome features. If one looked close and knew the Archon well one might see some similarities in their features, but that might be just the firmness of their jaws and intense blue grey eyes.

"Your Majesty, Melisma Rob didn’t send us just to hand you a personal note. His gift is far more personal and far more involved. Few know we exist, know of the Archon's Hands" And the way he said that last made it a title, not merely the name of the appendages at the ends of ones arms..."And it is His pleasure that we be made available to you. We act in and speak in his name as if we were he. Rob understands that Snowy Egrets ruler, one Stuart House, is seeking to interfere in a Almajoyan internal matter, the upcoming elections. He sent us to ask if you – personally and privately – wish this ceased? Personally and permanantly"

Jesse’s tone was firm as he made the offer – one didn’t talk with a highly skilled and thoroughly lethal assassin about a contract just any old day of the week, and he well knew that the ramifications would give her pause, so he continued on to the more emotionally neutral second subject.

“Additionally we seek your agreement, your permission, to visit Senator Ciaran Rachmaninoff and offer him the aid of Tanaaran medical technology. We can not guarantee success. However we have many mutants among our populace - meta humans with active and latent X Factors and we are well advanced in not only our understanding of such genetics, but also of ‘created’ mutancies as well.”

Jesse and Jinx waited with serene expressions and eyes that gave away nothing.

More messages had arrived while the oddly silent visitors were in the Empress' office. Sybil knew better than to interrupt, although it sounded as if absolutely nothing were going on in her office. She added the messages to the Empress' inbox for her immediate attention. They would likely receive a reply as soon as the Empress had finished her conference of sorts.

In her office, Melisma frowned as she let everything sink in. In essence, Rob, through these aides, these Hands, was offering to both finish House and try to cure Ciaran. Wonders really never ceased. But the opportunity to take out House once and for all had no appeal to her. House was a friend of hers, and although he mismanaged his nation, he had the right to. Besides, even if he was involved in Maybelline's campaign the way Shawn Johessman suspected, more money did not guarantee that she would win Ciaran's seat. Ciaran had earned the trust and respect of the Almajoyese people, as evidenced by the massive response domestically and internationally to the news of his condition.

"I most gratefully and respectfully decline the first offer," Melisma finally answered. "I do not consider Dr. House enough of a threat to merit that much effort. But I do appreciate the thought."

A brief flash of emotion across Melisma's face hinted that the second offer was not as neutral as Jesse and Jinx may have thought.

"You may go and see Senator Rachmaninoff and make your offer, and tell him that the Empress has given you her complete trust. He can most likely be found in his office, Parliament Building room 207. My team can give you a ride there if you wish."

Jinx deactivated the privacy bubble and the pair hied themselves over to the Parliament Building, room 207, seeking one Senator Rachmaninoff.

He frowned, but answered, "Thank you; send them in, please."

Upon entering, Jesse and Jinx would find the lanky Snowy Egretian seated behind his desk in a dimly lit office, looking as drained as the Empress had. "Good afternoon," he said, rising and extending a hand. "I'm Senator Rachmaninoff. How may I help you?"

Jesse shook the proffered hand, his return grasp firm but not pressuring -while Jinx steepled her hands and bowed over them.

Jesse introduced himself and his Lady in his pleasant baritone "Jesse and Jinx, the Archon sent us. And actually sir, I bear an offer of help for you. Rob tasked me to let you know that, while we can not guarantee success, the whole of Domination medical technology is available to you. We have substantial numbers of Metahumans among our population both genetic and ‘created’. I’ve also been advised by our senior physicians that most of the tests they would wish to perform can be done in less than a day.”

“And in complete privacy” Jinx added in a warm contralto, Behind her facade of serenity her hands were restless for she, as had Jesse, had foregone her usual rig out. Almajoya wasn’t like Tanaara, where weapons were legal, and openly worn.

The offer of help was completely unexpected. Ciaran had never imagined the response he had gotten both from the Almajoyese people and abroad- he was just one fairly unknown senator, after all. And Mel had often mentioned the trust and respect she had for Tanaara and their Archon. He did note Jinx's fidgety hands.

"I humbly accept your offer," Ciaran answered. "Please pass my appreciation on to your Archon. I will be available for the tests at your physicians' convenience."

And suddenly the gates to the city burst open and a column of elephants come marching in flanked by bare chested male trumpeteers playing fanfares. The elephants marched in time to the loud music as jugglers came behind them.

The caravan stopped suddenly in the center of the city.

"The Duke of Sacrus is here, where is the welcoming party" The lead crier of the caravan shouted.

And with that, the elephant's parted and a little man, a midget by most standards with a height of only 4 feet jumped down and waddled forward and in a nasly voice he spoke.

"I am the Duke! I demand to meet whoever is in charge of this carnival. Where is my welcoming party? I will cry a river if I don't have a welcoming party. And you certainly don't want that, now do you?"
