Fuck it. As someone who has no real shortage of "friends", dogs and cats make better companions by a loooooong shot. My kitten never broke off all contact with me over a pack of cigarettes and my Labrador never attempted to slander me over my sexual orientation after I told him to lay off yelling at his girlfriend at the time. Count yourself lucky to keep such quality company.

I am lucky. I just have convinced myself that I don't deserve it.

I am lazy and selfish and I allow myself to have fun and play all of the time at the expense of others who work hard to support my hedonistic lifestyle. Whenever I work hard, it makes me miserable. At least that is my usual justification. My parents tell me that it is not true and they laud me for getting good grades in college and joining honors societies, but I think they are just trying to make me feel better so I don't become even more of a pain to them. After all, I am in a two-year college.

You're young; embrace it. I know I have.
Whenever I work hard, it makes me miserable.

That's why you only work hard when necessary.

If they're fine with you, then you have no business being guilty or worrying about anyone else. I'm sure if you were that bad, they'd kick your ass to the curb. Give yourself a little credit, now...

I think I just have a tendency to be overly cynical about myself. I never seem to be satisfied with myself no matter what I do or don't do. Now I am worrying that I have been exaggerating my depression in order receive sympathy from others. See what I mean?

It does not even necessarily have to be a positive impact, as long as I have done the best I can do. If I cannot accomplish this in some way then my life will have been meaningless.

Unfortunately, I do not know of any ways I can gain influence that do not meet one or more of the following characteristics.

• Would require natural talents that I do not possess.
• Would require me to sacrifice some of my own convictions, thus defeating the purpose of self-actualization and achieving my fullest potential.
• Would require me to spend a large proportion of my life doing mind-numbing work guaranteed to make me miserable.

I think I am doomed to utter mediocrity at best. This is a very depressing thought. All I have left to make me happy is distractions and diversions that entertain me for the short time left I have on Earth (this forum perhaps among them).

To be perfectly blunt nothing useful in life comes without a little sacrifice. Let that fear of mediocrity be the thing that drives you to that influence. If your values (I am assuming they are largely reflected in your nation and coupled with your comment that supernatural creatures are talking to you in your dreams I assume you are at least partly religious) are holding you down maybe it is time to find new ones.

The High Tatras wrote:I wish I could have a girlfriend. That would make me so much happier and maybe it would also make me finally grow up instead of being locked in some awkward intermediate stage between adolescence and adulthood. I long to move out of my parent's house, but I do not think I could live by myself right now. I slack off too much on basic household work and chores and I have also never had a paying job in my life.

Really, I'm just depressed right now and I wish I had someone to hug me who isn't my mother or a dog, although I have been wanting to have a relationship for quite a while. I am just afraid to try. I don't know how to start one or go about it.

Solitude is no bad thing, in the words of the one of three Norwegians worth mentioning in history "the strongest man in the world is the one who stands most alone". Of course I suppose it is a matter of perspective, I may indeed be in the minority for outright preferring solitude to company. However I for one found my happiness to increase manifold when I stopped hungering after company and embraced isolation as my natural habitat.

The High Tatras wrote:I think I just have a tendency to be overly cynical about myself. I never seem to be satisfied with myself no matter what I do or don't do. Now I am worrying that I have been exaggerating my depression in order receive sympathy from others. See what I mean?

A healthy dose of Narcissism is the key to overcoming poor self-esteem. Look upon every vice you have as merely an unrecognised virtue.

Also Sprach Mackonia.

Regardless I think it is obvious that I am not the best one to give life lessons, but you seemed to want consolation and thus I gave consolation.

To be honest you don't need that much influence or talent to change the world for the worse- doing something like spilling oil down a busy staircase (This is an example, as I absolutely DO NOT recommend this) could easily send people to the hospital or kill people and thus influence the world in a negative way.

What I DO recommend, however, is trying your hand at different things. Find out how you learn best- by reading, by listening, watching or by doing it hands on. Then find out what sort of thing you're interested in. Learn about it. Learn about things related to it. Learn how to make katanas if that's your thing. Learn ancient languages and study them. Learn modern languages and study them or become a translator, whether by text or by speech. Learn how to work with space heaters and either repair them or design new ones. Learn about plant sex and become a plant pimp breeder. Just because you don't feel like you can make a mark on the world doesn't mean you won't, and even if you can't make a major mark on the world, you can live an interesting life doing what you like instead of sitting in a cubicle all day. Granted, money is a thing, so something that pays well is a huge bonus, but don't expect to live someplace with many bells and whistles otherwise.

I may not be terribly helpful, but I wrote this just after I got home from school and really have no clear idea what I want to do in the future. I too want to make a mark on the world, but I have decided it's best to do what I like best and take opportunities as they come along, maybe even chase one or two. Even if they all go to crap, I can still contribute to charity and make my mark on the world that way, even though I'd be probably nameless. You can probably save up a certain amount of money and donate to an arboretum or hospital or something like that so that you'd get your name on a paver or carved on a wall of donators if you want some sort of recognition. But like I said, I'm not going to claim I know for sure what you should do as I don't even know for sure what I'm going to do, though I hope I've helped in some way and haven't made you feel more confused or that you've wasted your time.

No matter what you do, eventually you will be forgotten and nothing of your history will remain of importance. It is best to come to terms with that at some point.

So why worry about engraving yourself in the stone of history? Just live your life, have fun doing it and relish in the knowledge that every last one of those attention-seeking drama queens will eventually be as insignificant, small and forgettable as everyone else is.

Just have fun and make sure to act in a way that allows everyone else who desires it to have fun as well. If the opportunity to do something extraordinary arises, I've found, it'll appear on its own eventually. No need to risk missing it because you've been too stressed out to notice it.

Granted, some little things will change the future far more than other things- breathing to the left instead of the right when in a room all alone will do very little, but sneezing to the left instead of the right in a crowded subway car will do more.

Well.. you don't look like you would be worried about being doomed to utter mediocrity. You look like you could be an athlete, or a kid on the robotics team, or someone in a business/entrepreneurial club.

And I don't think you should be worried about being doomed to utter mediocrity. In fact, for the majority of my time in SR, I thought you were an adult who was knowledgable in Slavic culture and interested in steampunk. You do have redeeming qualities besides your looks (you have good ones; any girl who doesn't like you for your looks is a bad choice anyway) and maturity is one of them. You come across as a likeable and relatable person through text at the least, and I think you are a valuable addition to Screw Realism, and I believe you will be a valuable addition to the RL adult world.

I think this may be the only way to save my beloved RP from a languishing demise, that is to say to advertise it in hope that it will elicit your attention. It has a good community behind it, with excellent, well-deserved credentials lent by many of the participants, but it suffers from a lack of activity at the moment. I'm sure it would a rewarding experience even for late entries, because the story is complex and multi-faceted, complete with political, military, and economic disputes amongst all parties.
