HALLOWELL CITY- Adding to the bubbling tensions in Atlas this and the past week, His Royal Majesty the Grand Duke was nearly assassinated today whilst giving a speech about the crisis over Skania-Arkland in the Media Centre of Crystal Palace. The would-be assassin produced a small pistol out of his jacket pocket, burst onto the stage, and aimed it at Orion II's left temple; the weapon, fortunately, jammed, and the man was tasered and tackled by members of the Royal Household Guard watching from the doorway.
The incident is suspected by the Government to be related to the ongoing crisis over the ownership of Skania-Arkland, where the Imperial State of Viridisolum would hand over the former colony to the Archontate of Bari. Despite this connection, the assassin was not carrying any cards or identification papers on him, and there are no ties to any of the countries involved; interrogation is ongoing. In a public statement, PM John Aberdeen stated that it would be "silly to shatter the peace over a single assassination attempt, especially with so little proof". Crystal Palace reiterated these sentiments in another press release and confirmed that the Grand Duke would indeed still be taking a tour of HMNB Hallowell City tomorrow.
In accordance to the allied Valaran Empire's and other nations' partial mobilisations, the 1st and 2nd (Grand Duke's and Grand Duchess's) Divisions of the Royal Hallowell Army have been placed on extended readiness, as has the 1st Armoured Infantry Division of the Reaction Force. RHS Richard IX, the flagship of the III Battlegroup, has also been placed on combat readiness in a display of firmness.
The Hallowell Parliament is expected by many media sources to hold a meeting within the week to discuss a proportionate Hallowell response to the crisis, coordinated with other diplomatic responses inside Atlas.
