IC thread

Background: Well, this will be the first Character RP I've hosted just about ever, so bear with me. Recently, I saw the movie 2012, and the previews you've all been through intrigued me. The one that stuck out the most to me and is the inspiration for this roleplay would have to be Shutter's Island.

Synopsis: Essentially the setting will be on an island offshore Kagetora, in the far north, with the nearest land 13 miles away in freezing cold water pretty much year round. Turbulent waters, high winds, and story weather are the norm on this island, and sun is a rare sight to behold from all the clouds.

On this island is a mental hospital for the criminally insane. Cannibals, mass murderers, creepy deranged people are the norm here. It is run by a slightly deranged man who lives there, who is an open supporter of Locke's idea of Tabula Rasa. He used to be a prominent member of the Kempeitai, Kagetora's national police force, and essentially brought the idea of rehabilitation to Kagetora. His name is Yasashii Tanaka.

Some background on the island and hospital prison:
Basically it's a small island. At the widest points, it barely exceeds one mile across. The mental hospital/prison covers up most of the area, with only a small forested area on the northeastern area that isn't enclosed by the walls of the compound. The staff of the compound is made up largely of nurses, orderlies, and most commonly, guards.

The compound has very few luxuries associated with the modern age. There is only one communications system that can contact outside the island, and that is Tanaka's private phone in his bedroom. No boats or planes are kept on the island. However, once a month, a helicopter arrives bringing medicinal and food supplies.

The day after the last helicopter left, a patient has gone missing. Kempeitai agents confirmed that no one left the supply helicopter upon its arrival in the mainland besides the pilot, and an active search both on the mainland and on the island has no turned up no results.

This is where your characters come in. The Kagetorian police are baffled as to where the patient has gone, and have called for international help. Inspectors, detectives, and members of police forces have been offered substantial reward for finding the patient and returning them to the compound.

Quick questions - as Shutter Island does look very interesting ...

What is the tech level of Kagetora - pure MT or slightly higher ?

Humans only? Non powered humans only?

What is the cultrual/ societal base - your's 'feels' japanese, but I don't want to assume.
The mathematical probability of a common cat doing exactly as it pleases is the one scientific absolute in the world. -Lynn M. Osband

Good questions.

The idea is supposed to be MT+5 years or so. I basically draw the line at any vast improvements of technology over modern tech in this specific RP.

Ah! Well I was somewhat considering that was the secret behind the compound, though not entirely decided on that yet. I'd prefer to have no special abilities in this one, though being exceptionally gifted at something I will easily overlook.

Culturally, Kagetora is a police state. Very authoritarian and militaristic. Most Kagetorians are very polite, and nationalistic. Kagetora is a country where complete devotion to the Shogun (Emperor essentially) is highly stressed. Architecturally and ethnically, yes Japanese basically.

Kage, I've been trying to figure out how to introduce a certain group of characters I've been writing about for years. This looks like the perfect opportunity for a couple of them, so I dug this out of The Box just for you.

Name: Marcus Rodgers
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Nationality: Acacian (Aamerikan)
Personality: Rodgers is introverted and very sarcastic. He always seems to be in a bad mood in public, especially when he is on a case, and especially when he is interrogating a suspect. However, he does have a more pleasant, gentler side, which is rarely seen by strangers.
Physical Description/Pic: Six feet tall, medium build. Tanned skin, dark brown hair. Wears sunglasses to hide his (green) eyes. Like this guy
Occupation: Private Investigator
Attire: Black suit. Always.
Brief Bio: I was born and raised in Aamerika, and moved to the city of Acacia fairly recently. That's where my headquarters are now. I used to work for the FBI until I got caught playing both sides of the proverbial fence. It's only my dubious connection to the Johessman family that keeps the FBI from arresting me. That, and the fact that they need me. I'm the best and most wanted hacker in Aamerika.

For now, I just do the odd investigative job to keep the rent paid. And to keep myself challenged. A wise woman once told me that "an idle mind is the devil's playground." And we wouldn't want the devil playing around in my mind, now, would we?

If we can have multiple characters, I'd like to use Rodgers' sidekick as well.
Name: Mira Maria Rodriguez Velasquez
Gender: Female
Age: 29
Nationality: Crescentian (The Ethereal Crescent)
Personality: Mira is far more patient and cooperative than Rodgers is outwardly. She smiles often, and is very optimistic.
Physical Description/Pic: 5'9, slender build, looks like a model. Long brown hair, brown eyes. Like this
Occupation:Private Investigator
Attire: A pastel-colored blouse and slacks
Brief Bio: I'm the "good cop" to Marcus' "bad cop." We've been together for so long, I don't really remember how we met. I know that he rescued me when my family was killed by a mass murderer. That, I remember. Who could forget such a thing?

I've stuck with Marcus ever since. I'm not particularly good with computers or weapons, but I'm very good at undercover work, and helping to balance Marcus' mean streak. I've learned quite a bit since being with him. And yes, I do mean "being" with him. Our relationship is complicated, something we've never tried to define. Not for lack of trying on my part.

OOC: Kage I'm playing her as having a nationality of TMZ, not Tanaara because of the Tech level differences- but as I always forget to switch over to that nation, you'll see me mostly posting as Tanaara

Name:Mahree Julianna Elizabeth Poppins

Gender:female

Age:38

Nationality: TMZian

Personality:reserved, observant, can be tart tongued, some what vain, independent and an introvert. Quietly competent she does not get rattled easily and has completed the requirements for TMZ citizenship.

Physical Description/Pic: Mahree is tall, almost six foot and slender. Her dark blonde hair falls rather straight to just below her shoulders and blue gray eyes hide behind severe but modern dark frames. She is slightly nearsighted, but has had lazer surgery to correct this - wears plain lensed glasses as they 'are useful'

Photo

Occupation:Medical Examiner ( see notes below )

Attire: Mahree generally wears conservative business attire - either nice pants or skirt suits - with a variety of comfortable but stylish athletic shoes – Sketchers being her favourite brand. One of her several Burberry double breasted trench coats – is always at hand, as is her ‘Go bag’- her M.E.’s forensic kit.

Brief Bio: Don’t ask me about my name. I hate my name. My mother had a sense of humour that I was never issued. She and my father were killed in an antomobile accident when I was fifteen. I ended up living with my fathers sister, but it wasn’t too bad, she and I got along well.. I graduated secondary school with a high enough GPA to earn a scholarship to Tanaara’s prestigious National University of Life Sciences. I had thought to be a physician like my father but once at the University I discovered the far more fascinating world of the Medical Examiner.

It’s taken sixteen years of advanced schooling, and then four years of working every case that came my way but I’ve earned an enviable reputation as a Medical Examiner. In TMZ and Tanaara that’s quite a bit different that else where, as I am well trained in criminology as well as being a Forensic Pathologist.

And now there is a variant on a ‘locked room’ mystery that the Kagetorans are looking for any help they can round up.

Notes:
In the Domination of Tanaara being a Medical Examiner is more than being just a Forensic Pathologist, for they also have extensive training in Criminology as well.

In the Domination, Forensic Pathologists first complete a 3 year undergraduate degree, then a three years Practical Medicine graduate degree, and then a three year combined residency in both anatomic and clinical pathology. Prospective FP’s then must pass the examination administered by The Tanaaran Board of Pathology and become "board-certified". They then complete a year in a forensic pathology fellowship.

The Tanaaran Institute for Forensic Science, Medicine and Criminal Justice sets the national standards and offers advanced training in forensic pathology and criminology to prospective medical examiners. Those looking to test for the final Medical Examiners license take three years of Criminology and complete a three year residence in that field, though both the academics and residency can be done while working as a journeyman to an accredited Medical Examiner.

And no, I do not sing, or dance, and I have never floated away on an umbrella.

Sounds interesting, and it's kind of similar to another RP I once joined. I'll write up the character when I get home later...

Name: Leegis del Tabulam
Gender: Male
Age: 37
Nationality: Hungarian
Personality: Withdrawn, likes to try to get others to do his work, he tends to be distant, but he will get involved if the going gets rough.
Physical Description/Pic: Tall, gaunt, and skinny, with a few muscles. He has a scraggely chinstrap beard, and a sunken face.
Occupation: Officially he is unemployed but the police force in Hungary has kept him on a hefty payroll to go out and solve any crimes that have gone cold for them and still give the force the credit.
Attire: A well worn trench coat with a black hat tipped over his eyes and a scarf around his mouth.
Brief Bio: Born in the middle of winter 37 years ago he was badly deformed in his face and was left to die outside, but was taken in as the maid's son, who left shortly after to protect him from the discovery of his cruel parents. She died shortly after and he grew up in an orphanage. Though he was reclusive he did well in school and was able to get a scholarship and went into buisness. However he did not far well due to him either startling people with his appearance or bundling up to the point of making his clients suspicious. He was soon broke, and lived on the streets untill he stumbled on the crime scene of a bloody murder. He quickly spotted several clues that the police had missed and that is how he came to be on their payroll. One of his crimes was the slaying of both of his parents by a local black market dealer, during which he discovered they were his real parents. He inherited their sizable estate, and has never been known to show emotion about the deaths, though he wasnot seen for weeks after the mystery was solved. He resides in their house when not solving crimes, and has not been seen without a scarf or other clothing over his face for years now. He was on the island to look for a prospective place to retire to without much outside disturbance.

Occupation: Halseyist Millitary Intellegence, ('Extra Political Affairs Branch') Cover Story - Private Investigator.
Attire: Rather plesent looking clothes, never anything slutty. In this case I think we'll go with a white blouse, a long black gypsy skirt, a black blazer, and a hairtie, with trainers.
Brief Bio: Alison is your traditional Halseyist seeded Millitary Intellegence operative. Buried in her cover story she is an industrious worker, with a quiet unspoken fantical loyalty to his Admiralship. Her Halseyist demenour tends to shine through every once in a while with her natural superior attitude, but this is balenced by her dedication to getting the job done. She might not be plesent company, but she's productive company. A skilled marksman, and a respectable duelist, her other talents include being multi lingual, shorthand, electronics experience, excellent swimming skills, and a moderate degree of millitary commando training.

Name: Joanne Pasenki
Gender: female
Age: 30
Nationality: Goian
Personality: Introverted, quiet, keeps to herself most of the time but approachable and friendly in social situations/if required, concentrates on the work at hand.
Physical Description/Pic: Moderate height, brown eyes, brown shoulder-length hair.

Photo:
Image

Occupation: Police officer
Attire: white shirt and black tie, black suit (double-breasted jacket), knee-length dress, white trench coat, boots, hat
Brief Bio: If one would ever meet Joanne Pasenki, the initial reaction is inevitably going to be lukewarm. Continued interaction would only solidify that impression in one's mind. Probably the best description belongs to her most cruel colleagues throughout her professional life: Joanne is the result of God attempting to create the blandest person to have ever walked the earth. Or, to be pithier, Joanne is the human equivalent of watching paint dry.

Nothing about Joanne counts as "interesting" or "different". Her looks are average. Her height is average. Personality-wise, she's soft-spoken and introverted most of the time. Sure, you can carry a conversation with her just fine, she's an intelligent woman and she has a pleasant demeanour, but you can't rely on her for anything more than killing time until something more interesting comes along. Her answers vary between monosyllabic and bland. She doesn't seem to have a sense of humour - Lord knows, "seeing Joanne laugh" is the equivalent of "hell freezing over" for co-workers. Smiling and laughing aren't the same thing - she can smile, but most of the time she kinda doesn't. You can't even faze her with teasing or insults, and if you did so everyone would think you're an asshole because, yes, she's as boring as Tales from Topographic Oceans but at the very end she's a nice, pleasant person.

Joanne's dedication to excellence in blandness begins with her history. Born in Arasar, her father was a computer programmer and her mother was a businesswoman. She grew up in a comfortable upper-middle-class existence, studying at the Sanyan High School and later Queen Rosana University. This we know as a result of yearbooks - actual interviews revealed that most of her classmates and teachers forgot about her the moment she left. Still, I suppose we should be grateful she didn't grow up into a pretentious, egotistical, narcissistic, vapid rich girl and exited university with modesty intact. I suppose it's better to be nicknamed "Mildchen" than "pretentious-narcissistic-dumb-rich-bitch". Actual interviews reveal she never actually planned for a career, but just decided to become an NP officer because of how many people did it. In an amazing display of individuality and ambition, she joined the Arasar Police Academy. Again, she worked and got very good grades, and then found herself a police officer.

The NP found itself at a bit of a loss what to do with Mildchen. She served for 6 months in the General Division, before being transferred to the Investigative Division and obtaining a comfy desk-job. It seemed she would stay in her comfortable job until retirement, marry somebody, have kids and die with no one even remembering who she was again.

Personally, when it was announced she would be assigned to this mission, the initial reaction among HQ was "who?", followed by "why her?". Probably because she is best suited to undercover missions and stands the least risk of pissing off the Kagetorans. I mean, do we really need to do that again?

But, before any thing in particular happend, King Gruffius II himself told him, "I have sent you to an mission" spoken the King. "What now sir? Enemy spies? The Blazed Imperials, I really know nothing about you, and I'm not terribly impressed. For now, you are denied until I see something that displays you can roleplay on the character level effectively.

After dinner, I'll work on a description of Tanaka and start writing up the IC. I'll leave this open to new applicants for a few posts after the IC goes live.

Ah screw it.

Name: Florian Fascienne
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Nationality: Currousian
Personality: Florain is rather quiet and is usually rather curt with others having a very distinct elitists attitude. Due to his sister's death during the Revolt in Currouse he's become bitter and has a developed a very guilty conscious knowing that he should have tried harder in saving her. His greatest weak spot is for his late sister and this guilt complex he's developed though he will never show this. Florian will sometimes be kind to a select few and cannot be rude to someone who is kind to him.
Physical Description/Pic:

Best I could think of (guy in the middle). ANYWAY!

His eyes are deep blue and his skin is very pale, a trait common in full-blood Currousians.

Occupation: Detective
Attire: Black jacket and a black sweater over an under shirt and a kevlar vest along with black jeans and combat boots.
Brief Bio: Being the younger brother of the late Faustine Fascienne, who was partly responsible for the Currousian Revolution, Florian was brought up in a very traditional and militant family. When he was four years old his parents were slaughtered by the Rhosian syndicate and he was taken from his sister who was then shipped off to military school and assumed him dead. He'd been taken in by one of the Rhosian scholars that had been partly responsible for his parents' murder and was educated very well though when he was of age Florian joined the Rhosian Guard, an elite group of soldiers formed by the leader of the Rhosians, Adriel Audraine himself. He spent about four to five years in the Rhosian Guard until the Revolution rolled around and he found his sister, which he then immediately went to support her and her efforts to right their once beloved homeland, who then most of the Rhosian Guard soon followed. In the final battle between the Non Verus and the Rhosians, his sister was killed by Audraine having been shot several times in the torso, Florian then grabbed his pistol and unloaded the clip into Audraine's face. She bled out in Florian's arms and Florain never forgave himself for letting her die. After the success of the Non Verus and their revolution along with his sister's death by the late Audraine he spent a year and a half as a general for the new government's military and served under Marius Haven whom of which helped his sister in the Revolt.Though he left after his depression had gotten the best of him and he decided to immigrate to neighboring Natatliea much to Marius's dismay and there became a detective.

Yay for character recycling!
