In a rare turn of events after a week of negotiations, the main opposition parties within the Unitary Parliament have came to an agreement on a plan of action to replace the current Speaker of the Unitary Parliament, Alternate Liberal Andressa Lapiz, whom has held the post for just over a year - currently commands the speaker position within the parliament. The role entails monitoring proceedings of the parliament, putting forward dates for debates and votes on motions, as well as having a powerful say within the proceedings of many parliamentary committees. The officially independent position is often renewed with each new government, but it is not immune to the disapproval of parliament.
Currently, the four opposition parties that are in agreement command 317 parliamentary seats out of a total of 640. In order to unseat the speaker a motion of no confidence must be passed with 55% of the parliament in agreement. Currently, the minority government hold 301 seats and are virulently against the replacement of the speaker. Should the plan work, according to Jeuves de Hueves "All parties must be brought onboard, including the Alternate Liberals." The Communist Party leader had this to say "I am glad that after a week of discussions with fellow opposition parties, we have all agreed a plan to win back the independence of our parliamentary speaker. The current Speaker is everything but independent, and has frustrated the wishes of the parliament consistently over the tenure of this minority government. In a weeks time, we will officially table a motion of no confidence against Andressa Lapiz. With hope and determination, the speaker shall be unseated. From there on in we will work again with our fellow opposition parties in order to nominate a speaker whom wins the confidence of the majority of the house, a speaker whom is determined to be independent and is determined to respect the wishes of our central parliament. From there on in, we can work to better our nation and to end political stalemate."
The Alternate Liberals have condemned the move as a "shambolic attempt to force a Unitary election." Unitary Commissioner Christina Anderson rebuffed the claims made by Jeuves de Hueves today outside the Unitary Parliament, Aygon. "The speaker is an officially independent position. She has the confidence of me, our party, and many others within the parliament. Her work is priceless, the stability of the position of speaker is almost sacrosanct. Should the speaker be removed by the opposition, it will set a dangerous precedent for the future of our unitary parliamentary politics."
In other news, Commiss Army Chief of Staff Nicolas Fernandez has attended a press conference today regarding the security operation currently ongoing in the El Telayar region of north east Montedoran. Speaking in Podzia today, he revealed that the rifles seized by the army were in fact of Englean origin - destined to be used by Montedoran terrorists. "So far, army technical officers have deduced that these weapons, Sturmgewehr 74's, are of a well maintained and ready to use disposition. These are not old rifles being moved from dump to dump, instead we believe that the 241 rifles seized at El Telayar were in fact being shipped to Montedoran terrorists, and that preliminary investigations tell us the origin of these weapons is in fact the Englean Kaiserreich. It is of great fortune that the military have been able to stop this particular shipment in its tracks, however, it is probable that many other movements of weapons have remained under our radar. CERBER and the Unitary Commission have launched immediate investigations into the origins of these weapons, but it is too early to say whether these are being deliberately supplied by foreign actors."
The security operation is currently ongoing with tensions simmering as so far over 20 men and 7 women have been arrested on suspicion of membership of the proscribed MIS terrorist group. This morning, two soldiers were injured in Alambra as their army convoy was attacked by a crude mortar bomb, MPS Chief Alvaro Pavarotti called it an "inconsiderate and callous attack". Numerous disturbances have been recorded, including civil disobedience. Chief Alvaro Pavarotti has asked for locals to follow the guidance of security forces, stating that civil disobedience will give cover for paramilitaries to launch "further Insidious and vicious attacks."
